Is Rey a Skywalker?

This is one of the most divisive and controversial topics in Star Wars. Is Rey a Skywalker?

The simple answer: yes, she is a Skywalker.

In this post, I’ll debunk some common arguments against Rey Skywalker, and make any points that haven’t been addressed in my counter-arguments.

She isn’t biologically a Skywalker

No, she isn’t a biological Skywalker and nobody is saying otherwise. However, if this logic were applied to other characters, it would be dumb.

Using this logic, Leia isn’t an Organa, Han isn’t a Solo, and Padmè isn’t an Amidala. Basically every character in Star Wars has a made-up name.

She wasn’t even close to Luke Skywalker

No, she wasn’t, but using this argument shows that you don’t understand the true meaning of the name Skywalker: hope. It’s evident that the name Skywalker brings hope to everyone. We see this when Rey finds out he’s real, or those nameless children playing with hand-crafted figurines. Or the Resistance seeing Luke Skywalker as their only hope.

By defeating Palpatine, Rey helped to restore hope to the galaxy. And with the death of all biological Skywalkers, it was up to Rey to carry on their legacy. So no, she did not take on the name because she got like two lessons from Luke. It’s deeper than that.

“Rey Palpatine”

Probably the dumbest argument ever made against Rey Skywalker.

Are you forgetting that Sheev Palpatine is one of the most terrible and hated people in the Star Wars universe? Why would Rey want to take on that name? Not to mention, she found no family with Palpatine. He only wanted Rey to revive the Sith. He never cared for her. Like what is the logic behind taking on that name?

She just stole the name

No, she didn’t. In the movie The Rise of Skywalker, the ghosts of Leia and Luke give her a look of approval before Rey declares her name as Skywalker. Also in the novelisation, I’m pretty sure Luke says to Rey “take it [the name], it’s yours”.

So, Rey did not steal a name that was given to her.

So, one last point I would like to make: it is canon that Rey is a Skywalker.

So, you don’t have to like Rey taking on the Skywalker name, but you have to accept it because it’s canon and it always will be.
