Coronavirus in UK: NINE Britons now inflicted with killer virus | UK | News
Tumblr media
As medical centres across the country put measures in place for a pandemic, the latest patient was revealed to have contracted the virus after contact with another Briton already infected in France. They were flown back to the UK yesterday and transferred to the Royal Free Hospital in London for quarantine and treatment. Professor Chris Whitty, chief medical officer for England, said: “We are using robust infection control measures to prevent further spread of the virus. The NHS is extremely well prepared to treat these cases and we are working quickly to identify any further contacts the patient has had.” He added: “This patient followed NHS advice by self-isolating rather than going to A&E.” Meanwhile, a British father-of-two tested positive for the virus in Majorca on Saturday. Tests on the man’s wife and two daughters, aged seven and 10, were negative. Health officials on the Spanish island confirmed the 46-year-old had contracted coronavirus, which has now killed more than 800 people worldwide. The expat, who lives in Marratxi, near Palma, flew back to Majorca after his January trip to France. It is understood he may have been staying with the other British party infected in the French Alps. Those confirmed with the virus abroad are: the father in Majorca, five Britons who caught the bug at a ski chalet in the French Alps, a man who contracted it in Singapore before returning to the UK and a lorry driver diagnosed on a quarantined cruise ship in Japan. British honeymooner Alan Steele, who was transferred from the cruise liner Diamond Princess to hospital in Japan, was yesterday said to be in good spirits. Mr Steele, from Wolverhampton, was moved to hospital on Friday while his wife Wendy remained on board. The liner had been isolated in the port of Yokohama, with 61 people hospitalised after testing positive. One of the five infected in the French Alps was yesterday named as British environmental consultant Bob Saynor, 48, whose nine-year-old son was also infected. The pair were last night being treated in hospital in France, along with three other Britons from another family who were staying in the Saynors’ ski chalet. Mr Saynor’s two other children and four Britons from the other family were being kept in isolation in French hospitals as a precaution. A friend of the family, Louise Gasparelli, said Mr Saynor and his wife Catriona, a doctor, had moved from Brighton to live permanently in the chalet three years ago. Chris Hopkinson, who lives in Les Contamines-Montjoie, said a helicopter and several ambulances had descended on the village to take the affected Britons away. Hundreds of people who came into contact with the group in the resort were yesterday being tested for the deadly virus. And the 95-pupil primary school in the ski resort, an hour from Geneva, has been closed this week. The Briton who caught the virus in Singapore is understood to have been the source who infected the other five Britons in the Alps, before travelling back to Britain. He was then diagnosed in Brighton and transferred to St Thomas’ Hospital in London. And two Chinese nationals who had recently travelled from China to Yorkshire are being treated at the Royal Victoria Infirmary infectious diseases centre in Newcastle. The Department of Health and Social Care said 686 people had been tested in the UK for coronavirus as of Saturday afternoon. In a separate development, a plane carrying 105 British citizens evacuated from the virus-hit city  of Wuhan in China landed in Oxfordshire yesterday. The flight, with more than 200 people on board including some foreign nationals, arrived at RAF Brize Norton at 7.30am. The government said it was the second and final flight to be chartered. It had government staff and military medics on board. They were taken to the Kents Hill Park hotel and conference centre in Milton Keynes where they will be quarantined for 14 days. We should not be seeing them on our coastline and when we do it normally means they are unwell or not eaten which means it could be malnourished.“There are lots of mudflats on The Swale. The tide is high at the moment but when the tide goes out we are concerned it could get trapped.“We have people looking out for it.” It comes as Benny the Beluga made headlines in 2018 after finding himself in the Thames after getting lost. The whale is believed to have left the Thames in early 2019. ONLY CURLS: Hair care brand success helps women rule the waves | City & Business | Finance
Tumblr media
Hair care specialist Only Curls, founded by Carter and her partner Hugo Lewis in 2016, forecasts sales of £1 million this year for its beauty products. The suite of treatments, designed specifically to enhance all types of curly locks, are British-made and come in a cruelty-free, vegan range that uses bio-plastic, recyclable packaging. The brand now includes accessories such as silk pillowcases (their smoothness a little-known tonic for curls) and devotees have formed a wide-reaching community that stretches from teens to the 90-years-young, all drawn to the light touch formulations that are sulphate and silicone-free.While direct internet sales backed by a prominent social media presence are the primary source of revenues, Only Curls does its bit for the high street selling through independently owned salons.“I have curly hair and spent too long battling to straighten it,” says Carter. “Once I understood how to manage it, I wanted share that with others. Customers know I understand them.”An expert in branding and lingerie design, it was working in the US for luxury store chain Nordstrom that opened her commercial eyes, she explains.“I had always wanted to have my own business, but Nordstrom taught me to be always alert to opportunities. “Where’s the market gap?” was ingrained in us.”For curly hair it was the limited choice available, consisting of treatments with heavy ingredients that weighed down styles. It struck Carter, 31, that the “straighteners boom had killed off innovation and presentation was very dated”.But the natural hair trend that came in more recently, plus digital advances, made disruption of the established, big brand order feasible for the first time for the ambitious start-up.Beginning with just £500 of personal savings in a trial run of microfibre towels, which reduce frizz and speed up drying time, profits from those sales were reinvested in expanding the range.“We ran the business alongside full-time jobs, packing in evening and dispatching from the local post office before our commute,” recalls Carter whose daughter Ettie was also born during this time.Working with a cosmetics manufacturer it was after Only Curls launched its Hydrating Curl Crème and Enhancing Curl Gel “that the business really took off”, says Carter.“Our four-step routine is unique. Making that uncomplicated but a combination that is effective and works well together was the biggest challenge on the product development side. The customer response has been enormous. From us they get unlimited curl advice and tips.”Among the most popular products, which retail at £16 each, is the £30 gift pack which gives customers an affordable way to try out the routine. Both Carter and Lewis are the only full-time staff based in south-west London, but “our success has created work for dozens more from our warehouse in the Midlands, to packaging designers and shipping thousands of orders each month via Royal Mail,” adds Carter.Without any outside investment to cushion their working capital flows, the couple were instinctively wary about ordering too much stock. The size of the demand frankly surprised them at first. “We sold out several times and that was a challenge too,” says Carter, “but success means now we can take bigger risks with the amounts.”Lewis handles the technology side and the couple were keen to “own the UK first”. Having done that this year they are looking to the US and expanding the product range.“Our goal has always been to make people feel good about their curls and we are achieving this,” they say. “Even little girl knows it is important. ’Only Curls’ have been two of her first words.”Onlycurls.com Source link Read the full article

EU News: PM tells Brussels sovereignty is paramount and UK will NEVER be a rule-taker | UK | News
Tumblr media
The European Union has said that the UK must conform to EU regulations to ensure a level playing field, if it wants the best possible post-Brexit trade deal. However, Mr Johnson is adamant that he will not cross his own “red lines”, which include the right to diverge on standards and regulations, taking full control of Britain’s fishing waters and freeing the UK from the jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice. Although this is likely to lead to more checks and controls on goods crossing the border, as well as more bureaucracy and costs for businesses, the Prime Minister believes that this is a price well worth paying. A Whitehall source told the Daily Telegraph: “We have said there will be no alignment with the EU and we are fully aware that there are consequences that flow from that. “We do not want tariffs or quotas, but the EU have already offered us that because Theresa May was offered a Canada-style deal which would have guaranteed that.” The Prime Minister will also reiterate his position that there will be no extension to the transition period and that a trade deal with the EU must be concluded by the end of the year. If no agreement is reached, then the UK will trade with Europe based on World Trade Organisation rules. Boris Johnson and Ursula von der Leyen (Image: GETTY)

EU News: Ursula von der Leyen and Michel Barnier (Image: GETTY) Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Sir Robbie Gibb claims that Brussels has still not come to terms with the fact that Mr Johnson’s 80-seat parliamentary majority has profoundly changed the political landscape regarding Brexit. Theresa May’s former chief of staff said: “The political landscape has utterly changed and with it many obstacles that limited the Government’s room for manoeuvre. “It is now crystal clear to everyone that what the Government agrees to can be delivered.” He added: “This Government wants a good trading agreement with the EU but not at the expense of UK sovereignty. EU News: Nigel Farage (Image: GETTY) “The EU can also choose to keep friction to a minimum for the benefit of its business as well as ours. “They can stop playing hardball and accept mutual recognition of our standards as they do for many other countries in certain sectors, such as Canada, Japan and the US.” Sir Robbie predicted that the EU will blink first by agreeing to a “basic free trade agreement” within Mr Johnson’s timeframe. He is confident that Brussels make special provisions for mutual recognition of aviation safety standards, with further sector by sector agreements to be added on after the December 31 deadline. She said: "And just to be very clear, I want the European Union and the United Kingdom to stay good friends and good partners. Archaeology news: Scientists unravel mysterious death of 2,600-year-old Belfast mummy | UK | News
Tumblr media
The case had dumbfounded acamdenics for decades, that the mummy of Takabuti could look so peaceful yet so damaged was a mystery. Now, following a recent state-of-the-art testing process, it appears that Takabuti was brutally killed by being stabbed in the back. Scans and forensic testing has provided an abundance of new information about the mummy, which was brought to Belfast in 1835. Of this, the revelation that she is more genetically similar to a European than a modern Egyptian. The findings were announced and made public on the 185th anniversary of her unwrapping. The study is hugely significant, Professor Rosalie David, an Egyptologist from the University of Manchester said, as it adds to existing understanding of Takabuti and the time in which she lived. She said: “The surprising and important discovery of her European heritage throws some fascinating light on a significant turning-point in Egypt's history. "This study, which used cutting-edge scientific analysis of an ancient Egyptian mummy, demonstrates how new information can be revealed thousands of years after death. "Our team - drawn from institutions and specialisms - was in a unique position to provide the necessary expertise and technology for such a wide-ranging study." Relatively little is known about Takabuti, her being brought to Belfast by Thomas Greg of Ballymenoch House, who bought her mummified remains after the Napoleonic wars. JUST IN: Archaeology news: Witch’s bottle found in US Civil War fort She was a married woman who, on her death, was somewhere between twenty and thirty-years-old, and lived city of Thebes at the end of the twenty-fifth dynasty of Egypt. Her father was a priest in the Temple of Amun, Karnak, and her mother, Tasenirit, a house mistress - her mother thought to be of European or Caucasian descent. This detail is yet to be cleared, however, with it impossible to say whether Takabuti was a foreigner in Egypt and had come from another region. Professor Eileen Murphy, a bioarchaeologist from Queen's University in Belfast, described the results as "astounding". DON'T MISS Scientists blown away by ancient volcanic eruption discovery  How ‘most important find of century’ exposed Bronze Age space advance Stonehenge: Why bizarre find is key to 'unlocking enigma'   She said: "It is frequently commented that she looks very peaceful lying within her coffin but now we know that her final moments were anything but and that she died at the hand of another." In 2009, a BBC documentary followed scientists attempts to digitally recreate what Takabuti may have looked like. In the process, they picked up on an unknown object inside of her body that was thought to be her heart. But, with the recent round of analyses, it has been discovered that it was in fact material used to plug the wound in which the knife plunged through. Her heart was eventually found, in tact and perfectly preserved as a result of the mummification process. Takabuti also had certain quirks about her: she had an extra tooth - 33 instead of 32 - happening only in 0.02 per cent of the population, also having an extra vertebra, which occurs in just 2 per cent of the population. Dr Greer Ramsey, curator of archaeology at National Museums NI, said advances in scientific techniques made the new findings possible. He explained: "In recent years she has undergone x-rays, CT scans, hair analysis and radio carbon dating. "The latest tests include DNA analysis and further interpretations of CT scans which provides us with new and much more detailed information." He added: "The significance of confirming Takabuti's heart is present cannot be underestimated as in ancient Egypt this organ was removed in the afterlife and weighed to decide whether or not the person had led a good life. "If it was too heavy it was eaten by the demon Ammit and your journey to the afterlife would fail." Since being unravelled under the supervision of the leading Egyptologist of the time, Edward Hincks, Takabuti has been the star attraction for visitors at Ulster Museum for nearly 200 years. Coronavirus: Britons quarantined as travellers from China ordered to 'self-isolate' | UK | News

Ukraine missile tragedy newly weds switched flight to get wedding photos | UK | News
Tumblr media
Niloufar Ebrahim, 34, and her groom Saeed Tahmasebi Khademasadi, 35, held a traditional wedding in Lahijan, Iran – where he was born – after a civil ceremony in the UK. The bride’s sister Navaz said they caught Flight PS752 on January 8 after postponing their return to London for the pictures. The Ukrainian Inter-national Airline flight to Kiev was accidentally shot down over Tehran by two Iranian military missiles, killing all 176 passengers and crew. Last night a tearful Navaz said: “Niloufar was the sweetest heart, sister and friend I could ever ask for. Everyone loved her. “She always cared for others more than caring for herself. She had a beautiful personality.” Navaz, who lives in Dallas, spoke to her sister by phone just minutes before the Boeing 737 took off. She said: “We had a normal conversation. ‘Love you, we’re about to depart. We’ll let you know when we get there.’ We said bye. “Later I was checking my Facebook and I saw news that a Ukrainian airplane had crashed. I didn’t want to believe it was her flight. “I asked my mum to read the flight number and she said ‘752’ and we were all screaming.” Her sister, who lived in Chiswick, west London, with her husband, had recently completed an MSc in occupational and business psychology. Her cousin went to her graduation ceremony on January 17 at Kingston University London. Saeed, an engineer for Laing O’Rourk, had been studying part-time for a PhD at Imperial College London. Colleagues paid tribute to his “warm and humble nature”. The couple were introduced by a mutual friend two years ago and tied the knot in London last May.  Source link Read the full article

Convicted rapist who conned £2.5m from lottery cheat's £53k in legal aid | UK | News
Tumblr media
But the Sunday Express can reveal that at the time of the trial he did not have to pay a penny of his five-figure legal costs. The payout sparked outrage by victims’ groups. David Hines started the National Victims’ Association after daughter Marie was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in 1992. He said: “I was refused legal aid as the victim of a murderer and here you get a rapist and a fraudster granted it. “I don’t want to hear any rhetoric suggesting the victim is at the heart of the system – it’s a lie.” Putman’s trial heard he conspired with Camelot worker Giles Knibbs, 38, to claim the jackpot with a fake ticket the week before the 180-day deadline in 2009. The fraud went undetected for six years until Mr Knibbs, an IT expert at the lottery firm’s headquarters, killed himself after Putman went back on a deal to give him £1million. At the time, the payout was controversial as builder Putman, from Kings Langley, Herefordshire, was jailed in 1992 for seven years for the rape of a pregnant 17-year-old. And his lottery win did not stop him wanting yet more money. In 2012 – three years after he became a millionaire – he was jailed for nine months for cheating the benefits system out of £13,000 in a housing and income fraud. The legal aid payments for his Lotto scam trial included £37,000 for barristers and £16,000 for solicitors. It was paid despite Ministry of Justice officials claiming that legal aid payments for crown court trials are “subject to a strict means test”. They also insist applicants can be made to pay “contributions up to the entire cost of their defence” – depending on their means. Authorities have vowed to seize Putman’s assets and recover as much of his fraudulently acquired winnings as they can but campaigner Mr Hines remains unconvinced. He added: “You can tell the Government – Priti Patel, Boris Johnson, Tony Blair, I have met all of them – all they do is talk rubbish.”  Source link Read the full article

The Health Secretary announced NHS Lanarkshire chief executive Calum Campbell had been made “turnaround director” for Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC).Mias Freeman also stepped up “special measures” at the board following the infection scandal that has engulfed Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH).She insisted the latest steps would improve “scrutiny and intervention” while unveiling a shake up of health bosses across the country. But Scottish Tory health spokesman Miles Briggs called the move “desperate” and accused Miss Freeman of trying “to reshuffle her way out of a crisis”.Pointing out that half of the country’s health boards are now in special measures, Mr Briggs said the Health Secretary was “out of ideas”.He said: “She should now resign and let someone else try to improve our NHS for the benefit of patients and the extremely hard-working  staff doing their best in this broken system.”Scottish Labour’s Monica Lennon said Miss Freeman had been “too slow” in taking “decisive action” and her “game of musical chairs” did not go far enough. The £100million QEUH has faced a number of scandals since opening in 2015.In 2017, 10-year-old Milly Main died after an infection thought to be from the hospital’s water supply. Her mother has accused health chiefs of lying about the case and demanded a fatal accident inquiry.Weeks before Milly’s death, three-year-old Mason Djemat died at the same hospital.Another two patients, including a 10-year-old boy, died at the QEUH after contracting a rare fungal infection linked to pigeon droppings. In November, NHSGGC was escalated to stage four of the NHS Board Performance Framework – the second highest level of intervention. An oversight board was sent in due to “ongoing issues relating to infection prevention, management and control”. In a written parliamentary answer published yesterday, Miss Freeman said ministers had since discovered “further issues” over performance including handling of care and GP out-of-hours services. The entire board has now been put at stage four with Mr Campbell drafted in to take direct responsibly for “operational delivery”.Labour MSP Anas Sarwar, who has been supporting the Main family, said NHSGGC was “in denial of its catastrophic failings”.He added: “It simply isn’t tenable for those in charge to remain in post. They have lost the trust of patients, families and the public.”Meanwhile, NHS Highland, at the centre of a bullying scandal, will get its third chief executive in just over a year.Elaine Meade left in December 2018 and Iain Stewart was appointed weeks later. He will now take over NHS Orkney while NHS Fife chief Paul Hawkins is seconded to Highland.
