The fact that a company [Verizon] that has actively attempted to suppress conversations about net neutrality and government spying in the past [through its defunct Sugarstring tech blog] now owns many powerful media properties [HuffPost, TechCrunch, etc acquired by AOL], is worrying.

You can buy attention (advertising). You can beg for attention from the media (PR). You can bug people one at a time to get attention (sales). Or you can earn attention by creating something interesting and valuable and then publishing it online for free.

From Blogger to Vlogger
Tumblr media
Since 2008, I've been a tech blogger covering the African tech space and major mobile technology events around the world, including the Mobile World Congress.
I recently created my very own YouTube channel where I'll be sharing my thoughts on technology products, especially those available in African markets -- whether it be simply just telling you how a piece of device feels, works, is designed, whether it’s worth your money, or even how it changes the industry, changes the society and changes us.
While I've produced several YouTube videos in the past on the TechLoy channel, the new channel will be my very first attempt as a 'vlogger' on technology products, people and places that matter.
I'm hoping that you will subscribe to my channel.
See you soon!

On becoming an A-List Blogger
Tumblr media
Never mind that people don’t usually celebrate bloggers yet in Nigeria, just like the entertainment industry and fans do for their most talented and favourite celebs.
That will soon start to happen. Oh, it has already started to happen.
While I and a few bloggers have been listed or mentioned around the web as the most popular and influential bloggers in Nigeria based on our blog’s ranking, influence and branding, I believe that’s not enough to say we’re there yet or we should be celebrated.
Rather, we’re still scratching the surface.
But beyond lists, there are quite a good number of lessons that bloggers can learn from the entertainment industry — specifically — the Nollywood, Music and Comedy Industry.
Here are 4 ways that bloggers can become celebrities (or A-List Bloggers) in their own right:
Bloggers will have to make their appearances felt beyond just their blogs – On Twitter. On Radio. On TV. On Billboards. At Events. Everywhere — if they’re to become the D’banj’s and Mercy Johnson’s of Nigeria’s emerging Blogging Industry.
Bloggers will have to attract a huge following or fan base (literally) as well as build a unique voice and style to become the Basket Mouth’s and the Princess’s of the emerging Blogging Industry.
Bloggers will have to figure out a method or a combination of methods to make serious money (with revenues in the excess of $10,000 monthly) from their content, brand and influence, not just relying on paltry sums from Google Adsense and other ad networks. (Note: Big brands with deep pockets are watching the blog space!)
Bloggers will have to live in the world of make believe. Start riding posh cars and living in mansions in your imagination. Start giving away Blackberry phones to your fans and followers in your dreams. Soon, you’ll start living those dreams and imaginations. Soon, you’ll be living the Dot Com lifestyle, driving fancy cars, going toexotic vacations, wining, dining and partying.
If you’re to contribute to building a viable blogging industry, you must step up your game and move onto the next level of blogging: becoming a blog celebrity!
It’s time to raise the bar, bloggers! Here's a quick to-do list:
Forget blogspot sub-domains!
Hire a very good WordPress designer to create a unique blogging brand!
Adopt a unique style of writing and/or hire talented writers on your team!
Join forces with other bloggers around your niche and attract new fans!
Build a network of blogs around your blogging brand!
Be prolific! Be passionate! Be professional!
Heck yeah, don’t take my words because I’m not a blog celeb yet — I haven’t made a dime! Instead, learn from those who actually make $40,000 per month blogging!
Whether you’re blogging for fame or fortune (or both), remember that it would take a long time to build your blogging brand. If you’re into blogging for quick money or attention, then it’s not for you!
Let’s compete, collaborate and network together! That’s how the Nigerian entertainment industry became a multi-million dollar industry!
It’s showtime, baby!

Vox Media is about to acquire Curbed Network for about $25 million, and almost overnight it will go from owning three media properties to owning six. However, while appearances suggest Vox is using...
My thoughts: I think this is the way to go for online media properties of the future. This is exactly what @loymedia is trying to achieve and has already started with three media properties.

5 Signs You're Unemployable
When Yahoo! acquired micro blogging software Tumblr for $1.1 billion last month and asked founder David Karp to stay on as an employee, he walked away from the Yahoo! deal with roughly $200 million, so he doesn’t need the job, right? Here are 5 reasons why Karp probably didn't keep the job and why he might be 'unemployable'.

Vox Media’s The Verge Launches Science Section, Announces Katie Drummond as Editor
New York, New York — April 17, 2013 — Technology and culture publication The Verge launched a new section today called “Verge Science,” focused on exploring the biggest ideas, the boldest research, and the most astonishing discoveries in all of science, from medicine and space exploration to physics and the environment.

Katie Drummond will be joining The Verge as the editor of Verge Science. Drummond previously worked as a reporter for Danger Room at Wired covering military research, and also as a reporter for The Daily and AOL News, where she covered breaking science and health news and contributed regular features and investigative stories. She has also written for The New Republic, New York Magazine, Popular Science, The Fix and other publications. Drummond will coordinate science coverage from The Verge’s own staff of reporters, as well as contributions from veteran science writers including Carl Zimmer, Brandon Keim, Ed Yong, and Victoria Schlesinger.
“Since our launch, we’ve been constantly developing and expanding the voice of The Verge, and it’s always been clear that a focus on science would be a big part of what we do,” Verge Editor-in-Chief Joshua Topolsky said. “Katie is the perfect person to shine a light on this topic because she’s brilliant at distilling big, complex ideas into deeply satisfying stories.”
Nilay Patel, The Verge’s managing editor, said, “The Verge is all about finding sharp new angles into important stories, and our science coverage will be no different — a mix of passionate critical thinking, enthusiasm, and fun that connects with a growing audience.”
The hiring of Drummond and the launch of the section also coincides with the introduction of a new Science forum, offering The Verge’s growing community a place to discuss the biggest stories of the day with Verge writers and each other. Readers can also follow Verge Science’s coverage at the dedicated Twitter handle @vergescience or on Flipboard, where The Verge is launching a new magazine dedicated to the most important science news, reports, and features.
“We’ll deliver rigorous, thoughtful, authoritative reporting on what’s new, what’s coming next, and why it actually matters — and we’ll make room for both certifiable science geeks and casual readers to find out what inspires them,” Drummond said.
The section debuts today with an investigation into the potential risks of federal research designed to prevent a pandemic, and a Q&A with best-selling science journalist Mary Roach. Drummond introduces readers to the section in a welcome post and an original video.
