Royal Blood Interview For The Rock & Folk French Music Magazine (Fan Translation) :

ROYAL BLOOD

A storm crashed on Brighton's duo, taking away the Led Zeppelin influenced heavy riffs and replacing them with a brand new sound. The heavy turned to groove.

All of our predictions were wrong. We never thought we would one day ask ourselves about the possibility to buy green beans at 18h55. However, in the music industry, it's the same thing, minus the green beans. Nowadays, bands try to do what they like, not keep their "signature" sound, which after a few years, can scare the fans away, and, even the band members themselves. That's Royal Blood's case, who comes back with "Typhoons", an album French Touch, made for the dancefloors, which, right now are our living rooms. There, the drinks are cheaper, but we loose the atmosphere... From Royal Blood to Daft Punk, it's something only the British can do.

Daft Piano

Rock & Folk : Isn't it a bit frustrating to release an album made for partying at a time where we can't party ?

Mike Kerr : Not really, I think you can pretty much party anywhere, anytime. You just need a strobe, and you're good to go !

Rock & Folk : This new album is clearly influenced by the french scene. No offense to John Lennon, but is France finally musically inspiring England ?

Mike Kerr : French music has always been part of our DNA. I have listened to a lot of that while growing up. The first instrument I picked up was the piano, and I learned how to play it by playing Daft Punk's songs. I couldn't stop playing them. Once, I even thought about starting a Daft Punk cover band ; "Daft Piano". Their music taught me so much as a musician. On this album, we thought it was time to "realease" these influences, to avoid censoring ourselves.

Rock & Folk : It might also be the wish to make something new, something different ?

Mike Kerr : Absolutely, we wanted to "renew" ourselves, we didn't want to make something that sounded like the first album. It would've been so boring. For us, and for the fans. This is how we came to make "Typhoons". When we started writing the first songs, we understood that we found something interesting. A true sound. I hate bands who make albums with one single that sounds different, and where all the other songs sound the same as what they usually do. Cowards !

Rock & Folk : Was it hard to mix the heavy sound from the old Royal Blood with the new sound, the "dance-ish" one ?

Mike Kerr : It wasn't easy. We had to find some kind of balance between making a "dance-ish" album, without falling into the funky trap. So we decided to keep the heavy riffs. They are just more "polished", and that's why you can dance while listening to it.

DAFT PUNK

Rock & Folk : Change your sound is something pretty risky. Were you anxious when the singles came out ?

Mike Kerr : Not a all. I kind of live with these songs. I listen to them everyday and I am still not tired of them. If someone doesn't like them, well, I'm okay with that. I didn't write these songs for them. You can't please everyone every time. Some will prefer the first album, some the second. I think there are people who will find out about us with "Typhoons", and will like it. Then, they will listen to "Out Of The Black", and they might hate it. That's why you should write songs for yourself, and not the public. You cannot live if your fans control you.

Rock & Folk : Releasing a Daft Punk influenced album right when they break up is kind of a smart move !

Mike Kerr : Yes.... Even though it wasn't only influenced by Daft Punk. It's not a Daft Punk album, no one can copy their genius. They're kind of "untouchable". Their break up made me sad, but at the same time, I respect them so much for making this decision when their career was at its peak. It gives it more impact. END
