the reason so many modern ‘feminist’/’gay’ retellings of classic stories or mythology are shit is because no-one wants to actually engage with a work on its own terms anymore. nobody wants to actually analyse and dig into the themes of a work they just want to plaster over it with what they consider self serving and ‘trendy.’ so instead of actually ANALYSING what a myth could say about women, or gay people, or society at the time in general, it just gets rewritten again and again to say what the author wants it to say. braindead fucking culture

i’m happy with crumbs if it’s a good ship. give me a good foundation, a meaningful dynamic, using literary devices and i’m satisfied. even better if they get together and i can further explore them/continue their story in my head. much better than ending up with a badly written relationship that started out as a good premise.

Okay but the way Selina is positioned both on the cover & the first page in the first issue of Catwoman (vol 1) is brilliant.
The fact that the position of her body itself is sexualized- presenting her as the type of victim that was so often featured in comics merely to elicit shock, with no compassion for what they would have gone through, their pain and bodies eroticized- works so so well on a thematic level. It’s genius and it’s genius because, by being the protagonist, Selina’s existence becomes a trope subversion.
And like. this is part I’ve why I’ve come to believe that Selina’s status as a former sex worker is crucial to who she is as a character on both a textual & meta-textual level. She’s a bisexual* woman, a sex worker, and often times visibly presented as lower-class, like, on a design level. She is the exact type of one & done victim that society teaches us to view as disposable, as someone who had it coming. Someone who was bound for it because she was poor and queer and came from a shit home life. All of which is made more evident by the fact that she is in a dingy alleyway, quite literally surrounded by trash. The way she’s coloured grey in the comic itself despite the audience’s knowledge of how bright her clothes actually are, almost as though she’s meant to fade into the background. She is the least lively thing on the first page. Like, idk, the choice to remove colour feels very pointed. Sort of like due to the nature of comics the victimized woman is only going to draw your attention if you think she’s dead, so that is when the light is shone on Selina.
But, anyway, the thing that makes this subversive & the thing that makes this so great is that Selina isn’t disposable. This isn’t the story of her death, or of her reporting a crime only to never be seen on page again post-brutalization, this is the story of her rebirth. And not only does she get to live, she gets to do so on her terms.
Additionally, her status as a bisexual woman becomes all the more relevant when considering just how much IPV, along with hints of trauma-related mental health issues, play into her story. If you were unaware, bisexual people have the highest rate of being victimized by IPV, along with the highest rates of mental illness out of any sexuality. Moreover, we later learn that the violence she faces is largely at the hands of her partner & pimp, who views Selina as a sex object in spite of her genuine desire to be loved by him. This specifically hits on the bimisogynistc stereotypes of the idea of love being nothing but sex to bi women, or the idea that loving a bi woman is soley a sexual act due to her bisexuality.
And yet when you open the issue she’s just a girl, quite probably dead, lying with torn clothes in an alley. Like I’m
*I’m aware that her bisexuality was not textually canon until much later, however if you look into Selina’s history- particularly as it pertains to the CCoA- it becomes clear that it’s still relevant due to her status as a historically queer character. Also if you want to ignore it you probably have a shitty reason anyway.
Images under the cut.

thinking about future batman/bruce portrayals genuinely frightens me. like there’s no way dc won’t utilize their success and shit out tons of content depicting him as a brutal brawler accompanied by the "i’m vengeance" line.

this is how i want bruce to interact with sex workers. not shame them and imply violence is just a natural consequence of their line of work.
