Theres a million things I wanna analyze and discuss from a media and writing pov but i also have finals to finish so I’ll just say this one thing that’s different about season 3 that I really love rn.
We always have an idea of who the love interest will be early on in the season/book and then wait to see them figure it out for themselves in the final moments. We’re seeing that format a bit with Francesca right now as they start to build her story of course, but with Penelope and Colin we’ve been watching them build up for 2 seasons already. This in and of itself is expected as it captures the spirit of their book as well, which for those of us who read it know that their love story is only half of the book’s plot.
However, because they strayed from the book with the whistledown/pen/eloise plot, this season is special. The book gave more room for plot outside of the love story than previous books did, and the show took that space and used it to lean into pen and Eloise’s relationship. Even doing so in subtle ways: in one episode Penelope receives two callers, the first time we are hoping it’s Eloise and feel her disappointment when instead she finds Colin. The man she’s been watching out her window for years is calling on her, but still she yearns for someone else, her best friend.
Even without reading the books, we already knew before the season aired that it would be about Penelope and Colin (finally), so it’s not the primary relationship that we (or perhaps even Penelope) are yearning most for.
Normally, we’re waiting for a thick headed bridgerton to figure out their own feelings. Colin is no exception but he’s been figuring it out for years and he’s not who we’re waiting for this season, Eloise is. This season isn’t just about Colin and Penelope’s love story it’s about Penelope and Eloise’s love story too, perhaps even moreso.
This is really hitting for me personally as a woman in my early thirties who’s experienced friend break ups and the normal decrease in friendships that just happens as you get older (or in my case move cross country). If your twenties is about finding your self, your thirties are about finding your place. When you reach the “spinster” age range of society you begin to slow down, you begin trying to find where you fit into the world as an adult, you begin to value the deep relationships that have survived the test of time.
Losing a friend at this stage can honestly feel like losing a family member or a romantic partner in some ways because you’ve grown to lean on them so much, and I’m just so glad to see that part of girl and womanhood highlighted this season.
Ty for coming to my Ted talk

Did we literally break Netflix?
Pulled up bridgerton as exactly the top of the hour, Metflix immediately slowed extra (it’s been awful all night) and crashed, lol

Some first TTPD thoughts now that I’ve listened a few times and processed a bit:
- My fears of an album made mid tour coming off as rushed have been somewhat confirmed, there is a reason most artists don’t produce albums during an active tour. Taylor’s best written songs were made during the pandemic when she had to slow down, and it benefitted from a ton of collabs. That level of quality simply can’t be reached during a huge tour like this with her insane schedule.
-Lyrically, so much of this hits close to home as a woman around her age. As a 92 millennial, her albums are often released in perfect timing with a relevant chapter of my own life because she is about 2 years older than me, so when she releases an album expressing her feelings from 2 years prior it ends up being just in time for me, this album is no exception. Sentiments of being in a relationship with men who refuse therapy, trying to appease them, waiting for marriage or babies, that intuitive feeling of time running out: this was written for millennial women.
-That being said a poem is not a song, converting poetry to music that translates the original meaning isn’t easy, and it feels like she handed a book of completed poems and random verses to jack and asked him to produce music for it quickly. In songs where the lyrics are really strong it’s often overshadowed by repetitive music that doesn’t match the personality or the intricacy of the writing style. Some of the songs are actually more enjoyable to read as poetry which is what we’re all doing with lyrics we’re sharing and analyzing.
-Some of the lyrics feel rushed too, you can hear in songs like down bad that she meant what she said and it was raw and real and fully expressed from her insides, but then songs like alchemy are reciting a cringey conversation and it’s not even poetic, it just feels like filler in some spots
-the vibe is telling me she rushed this on purpose because she needs public closure of this chapter to start something new sooner than later, whether that’s career wise, family wise, or both
I’m not saying I don’t like it because I very much do, but I’m enjoying this album moreso as poetry with a little bit of background music, whereas albums like folklore felt whole with lyrics and music that complimented one another and translated the message more clearly. Overall though, I actually just wish she waited another year to release this so it could have been reworked one more time through and come out fully cooked. Folklore and evermore is some of her best work because of the world making us all pause and slow down, she was able to put her soul into the details, which is just impossible to do while also performing a massive production tour. It’s not a bad album but it could have been better and feels like a draft at times for me. That being said, the underlying tone of a chapter ending is not only emotional for me as a fan, but as a 32 year old woman who relates to this vague theme of transition wholeheartedly.

“do you just do as everyone tells you to, “lights, camera, bitch, smile” to save the public persona?”
This, but also I can’t stop thinking about how as a performer I’d be thinking about how I established these tour dates and I made a commitment that people made huge sacrifices to make, how could I possibly cancel for a broken heart? I respect that level of professionalism from her so much bc at the end of the day she could just cancel and call it a day tbh.
“Some sort of live stream, public autopsy”
so much of the overall narrative of this album seems to be the personal vs public persona; how do you separate your love life when it’s also been a huge part of your marketing for so long, to the point where people now expect to know every little detail and be given an explanation for every move, decision, risk, action even when it’s something that they have no right to. how do you reconcile that with yourself? do you just do as everyone tells you to, “lights, camera, bitch, smile” to save the public persona? Or do you dig your feet in even when you know it’s wrong to?
the whole concept of a “tortured poets department” is said so sardonically; there is no tortured poets department - it’s a self aggrandising label for all those ‘misunderstood souls’ to use to explain away their wrong doings, a pedestal to be put on and a stick to be beaten with simultaneously. Shes almost clinically self aware of the way she appears in the public eye and how every choice (be it good or bad) will be examined in excruciating detail and still she wants to make the bad choices to the point of self sabotage. It’s very ballsy to be so open about such a messy, vulnerable and desperate time in your like (such as after a break up).
so really everyone can stop now with the “this is supposed to be the songwriter of our generation” comments can stop now
because it’s not even a title she believes in herself

My rapidly changing thoughts on Ttpd clues (and on some of y’all’s behavior)
The twos, the black and white contrasts, and the nods to past albums feel like a symbol for duality, life and death, dying and rebirth
If that’s the theme of just one album, the up and down books could be the ups and downs of grief, titles of songs that represent moments of despair vs hope
If there is a dual album release, I wonder if it’s an evermore folklore sisterhood album situation where after grief comes hope etc, a quill fountain pen album before a glitter pen album release
Maybe she’s releasing the albums 2 weeks apart, a fortnight, and maybe that’s got other symbolism behind it
I think 2 more albums would bring her to 13, yes? Maybe a new release + reptv on dec 13?
Her bday also makes sense with death and birth themes
2 more albums and then she moves on to whatever her rebirth is? New stage in her career? Marriage? (Though tbh I don’t see Travis as her endgame sorry)
Everything about my knowledge of literature and art history screams that the fertility goddess crumbling is about more than a passing witty lyric, it feels like a symbol for miscarriage or abortion
While I doubt she’d write about abortion due to the safety risk of insane half literate forced birthers while she’s on tour, it would be so so so incredibly powerful to hear a song about complex abortion or miscarriage grief with how republicans are harming women/afab folx in the US right now
Realistically the symbol of crumbling fertility could more likely represent how she can’t wait to move on to the next phase of her life or career without crumbling / she started to crumble when she put her own goals off, it’s giving “my biological clock is ticking” which as a woman about her age I can say is a VERY real feeling even outside of fertility topics (it’s a mid life check in point) , but she probably doesn’t mean it quite so literally as being related to fertility.
She’s not coming out. As a bisexual I’d love her on our team, but y’all are unhinged if you think this is a “surprise I’m queer/trans” album. Even if she was queer I highly doubt she’d make that announcement during an international tour for safety alone. It’s also incredibly offensive as a bi woman to hear people say she’s staying neutral to queer bait or appease people when all she’s done is date who she is (at least publicly) comfortable dating. That is her prerogative, even if she’s attracted to more than one gender. This kind of rhetoric is not only biphobic but disregards the very real safety risks involved with coming out, especially as a celebrity with as many eyes on her as Taylor. Do all allies have to become queer to be safe from queer bait accusations? Come on. Stop putting her in a box where the only way she can please you is by being queer.
The leaks? Yes she’s a billionaire, yes physical record purchases help, but you’re taking away from her numbers and therefore the immense social and economic power she currently holds. Streams = numbers = power in a corporation run society. Every leak you play or promote is one less stream. It’s not that hard to understand, if you want her to keep making waves ya gotta wait like a grown up my darlings
