I don’t talk about it much here, but my day job has been graphic design for the last 15 years. After George Floyd died and the BLM movement became more prominent, the firm I work for wanted to come up with a graphic to communicate our feelings. Back in December I shared a couple of progress images from our illustrated 2020 New Years card, but forgot to show the whole thing! What a dink. For this year's motif we went with Clue, one of our favorite movies. I really enjoyed working out the set background, playing with the shadows and little intricacies to make it look good. Katherine Johnson was an American mathematician who worked at NASA for 35 years, calculating orbital mechanics for human spaceflight. She was one of the first Black women to work as a NASA scientist, and in 1962 was specifically requested by astronaut John Glenn to verify the Friendship 7 flight calculations before he lifted off. You know me, I’m fascinated by shrunken heads. I started working on this little guy maaaany moons ago, sometime in late 2017. I’d do some sculpting, put it down, pick it up a few months later, repeat. I finally finished the sculpting in April 2019, then molded and cast him shorty after...then let that sit for a year too. So when the pandemic started, I said to myself, “I’m going to finish this thing come hell or high water.” Cut to some experiments in painting, hair gluing, and accessory making, and three weeks later he was done. I don’t usually look back on my own work with much affection, but I’m really proud of this little guy. My plan is to make some of these available to purchase if you’d like one of your own, I just have a couple of commitments to finish up first, hopefully in about another month or so. Orange County Regional History Center, 1927. The downtown Orlando building that houses @historycenterfl began its life in 1927 as the Orange County Courthouse, replacing the original courthouse from 1892. It was then replaced in turn by a new 23-story high-rise tower in 1995, and in 2000 the History Center moved in.
