I saw your post about how Nessian —‘don’t talk about the incredibly fatal chance of pregnancy’ is a great topic and I’m still in the dark about the whole thing. In particular the scene where Azriel asks Cassian if he wants babies and Cassian immediately starts replaying his and Nesta’s hallway make out. Is this implying he is thinking about getting physical with Nesta right after being asked about having babies? never understood that part.
Then Cassian answers with yes of course I want kids and ponders about waiting for matehood…. At this point in the story he either knows or suspects Nesta is his mate so..? I guess what I do grasp is that SJM possibly was just trying to keep the reader in the dark about wether Nessian are mates with all that but still in the grand scheme of things the scene doesn’t make sense because if Cassian already knew she was his mate (as he mentioned in his awful mate declaration that he guessed the moment they first met) wouldn’t he have shut down the thought immediately considering Nesta would die 😪 I’m just glad someone else touched on that strange set up
Woof. I've largely stopped bitching about acosf because I've blocked it out of my brain. But! Cassian in acosf makes no sense! Not even a little.
Unfortunately with acosf!cassian I have to acknowledge something. Sjm was building to the bridge argument the whole book and was willing to sacrifice any characterization she might have had to do it. It's not just the argument, it's the surprise. And to keep it a surprise she plays this unreliable narrator game where cassian isn't allowed to think of nesta as his mate.
Which is unfortunate because it's his main conflict.
But also leads to really weird passages where cassian thinks longingly of having a mate and emotional intimacy and then sexualizes Nesta instead of connecting the dots (hes not allowed to think of nesta as his mate). Or says he wants kids when any rational person would be resigning themselves to a childless future (hes not allowed to let the reader know nesta is his mate). So I have to take 90% of his internal thoughts with a grain of salt. Because no, it doesn't make sense.
If the worldbuilding established in acosf were true and cassian were a person, he would have resigned himself to not having biological kids mid acowar. And he would also feel doubly inadequate because the bastard thing doesn't hold a candle to knowing that Nesta can safely have children with someone who's not him. There is so much angst there. If I didn't hate the whole illyrian baby thing so much on principle I'd eat that up. Nesta thinks she doesn't deserve him, cassian thinks Nesta wants kids eventually, it all could serve a lot of delicious angst for their romance plot but it doesn't because it's only there to have Nesta save feyre.
It's just all on how sjm writes, but it means that most of cassians passages don't make sense at all. Still, I do prefer couples to talk about birth control prior to fucking, especially when murder babies are on the line

by the end of s5, what do you think separates claudia and callum (if anything) from being a villain vs a hero?
Oh, there's plenty that differentiates them! This may not be as articulate as I want it to be as I've spent most of the past 3+ years pointing out / trying to convince people of Callum's similarities to Claudia and Viren (which S5 finally cinched for me, beautifully) than having to describe their differences, but I'll do my best!
Callum very much has both the best and worst of Viren and Claudia when it comes to dark magic, where he kind of borrows from each of them in distinct ways to be the most.... reasonable 'dark mage' in a lot of ways, due to 1) his views on dark magic and 2) his motivations for using it. So let's dig into it.
1) Views on dark magic
Unlike Claudia, to Callum dark magic isn't something frivolous (hi dark magic pancakes) or something to aspire after. He's far more like Viren (and even then I don't think Callum would ever consider dark magic "brilliant and clever" even if it is very much practical) in terms of seeing dark magic solely as a last resort since, as I've laid out before, Callum knows it's wrong. That it's a dangerous, slippery slope, for him in particular. Callum is also just willing to do something he Knows is wrong and see it to fruition anyway.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Now, this also plays into the series' theme of how it's always Easier to play into / perpetuate the Cycle than it is to take the harder path of breaking it, but post for another day.)
Claudia has come closer to this viewpoint in some ways in S4 (crying as she explains what she had to do to bring Viren back) but ultimately, she doesn't think/see/know Aaravos is 'evil'. She doesn't think she's doing anything Wrong But Justified because she doesn't see anything wrong with what she's doing in the first place ("Humans were born with nothing, but we still found a way to do amazing things. That's what dark magic is really all about" / "The elves and the dragons did nothing. They judged us. They pitied us" / "All through history dragons have had the power while humans lived in fear. Well times are changing"). Callum is not that, at all, hence the guilt (even if I think more of it stems now in S4/S5 from what he knows dark magic allows - Aaravos' possession that then in turn also puts his immediate loved ones in danger).
Therefore, Callum's views on dark magic are far more akin to Viren's - powerful, dangerous, a necessity that chips away at you and you alone if you do it right, if you can successfully spare other people. Viren's comfort with dark magic goes further than that, and Callum's comfort with it is lesser than that, but they are more similar I think in their views of dark magic than either of their views are to Claudia's.
Like, regardless, Callum fundamentally disagrees with dark magic - he doesn't like or want to hurt innocent people/creatures if he can help it (again, big difference between him and other two mages, even if there are definitely areas where who Callum views as 'innocent' could be improved). It's a Last Resort, but it's a Resort. His aversion, those reservations, those lines, those morals? They exist (which is a distinction) but ultimately do not matter when Ezran or Rayla are threatened.
Which is, I suppose, as good a time as any to talk about
2) Motivations
Viren's hierarchy is the 1) the world (which his family is a part of), 2) himself, usually (because he believes he is uniquely positioned to be able to help the world & make the right choices) and 3) his family. We see this hierarchy play out pretty succinctly in 1x02-1x03 with Harrow, almost beat for beat. As Viren says there (and in S5) Harrow is his family and means everything to him... but Viren is not willing to reveal or relinquish the dragon egg in hopes of stopping the assassination, because he would rather have himself or Harrow die rather than put a weapon into Xadia's hands. This is also why he's willing to warp Soren into a cinder beast in 3x07. Not only is he personally pretty far gone at that point, but he is willing to sacrifice his family (gaslighting Soren to keep Claudia tethered in 3x03, for example + "I would've asked you to choose the egg over my own life, if it came to it"). In some ways, S5 is showing that he lost that part of himself and is now reclaiming it, making it true in ways it hasn't always been. Love is what made him Lose Himself but also how he ultimately Found Himself again (which bodes very well for Callum's S6 arc, but anyway...)
Alternatively... Callum says "I value those close to me more than Anyone or Anything" (Tales of Xadia bio) and he unequivocally means it.
Callum loves Harrow dearly, but he still knows the safest place for Ezran in 1x03 is to get the fuck away from the castle, so he goes. He breaks the primal stone after watching Rayla and Ezran mutually cry and console each other as Rayla blames herself for Zym's imminent death. As discussed, he'll do dark magic in 2x07 even though he knows it's wrong because it's Rayla's life on the line. He'll jump off the mountain for her. He'll threaten and demand answers from Soren before and after learning that Ez could be in danger, and run right into a trap. He'll do literally everything he did in 5x08 for Rayla, as we know.
Tumblr media
In this way, he is very similar to Claudia, who would likewise Do Anything for her family and always mean it, particularly her father (after all, Soren 'walked out' on her, not the other way around; she was still trying to keep them all together). It is worth noting now, though, that Viren has now circled back, so arguably all three of them are sharing in this Motivation, and prime for Aaravos' manipulation if Viren still has a further role to play (although his curtain may have closed lmao). After all:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But yeah, Callum and Claudia are two characters who have always had a steady flow of parallels and a particularly brutal slant toward each other (because their selective loyalty is not and never has been to each other) and the easiest way to have an audience still remain sympathetic to an antagonist is to draw parallels between them and a protagonist, so...
Obviously in TDP there are 'good' guys and 'bad' guys but I don't think the series is that interested in a pure black-white good vs evil dichotomy. Almost every antagonist character is still sympathetic, developed, interesting, and we can understand where they're coming from. The protagonists make plenty of mistakes and have plenty of their own biases and contradictions; it's what makes them interesting too! People aren't necessarily Villains or Heroes so much as they are people stuck in cycles of grief and violence, and the series being an exploration of how and where and why they do or don't (or can't) break those cycles. At least, that's what I find is most useful from a meta perspective.
I think ultimately what differentiates Callum and Claudia in my head is, as mentioned, the different ways they view dark magic even if they have exceedingly similar motivations for using it, as well as Callum striking me more as the type to fight so hard to save his loved ones while they're still alive, but not quite as inclined to go as far as Claudia did and follow through on a resurrection spell the way she did. He's better at emotionally processing (although it's a low bar to clear for her) and better at letting things go, and more respectful of his loved ones' wants (most of the time). If Ez and Rayla both died in tragic/traumatic ways, I think that could (understandably) really warp him to something close to Claudia, but so long as one lived, I think they could keep him from going off the rails.
Claudia left the train station a Long time ago.
More metas that may be of interest (written before S4 and S5):
How Viren and Callum stack up flaws wise (S1-S4, screencap S5 update)
How Callum's initial view of Zym differs from Ez and Rayla (S1-S3)
Callum's morality (S1-S4)
TDP's Perpetual Trolley Problem, or How the Show Frames / Deals with Sacrifice and Exchange (S1-S4)
The Interlocking of the Cycle's Wheel with Viren, Claudia, Callum, and Rayla (S1-S4)

what can i say about mogami keiji that has not already been said !!!!!!!!!!!! he serves as a really well written foil to mob and introduces concepts and ideas that- while he does execute to the extreme due to his inability to accept change or offer chances of redemption instead of teaching permanent lessons- do hold some valid points muddled within his whole nihilism deal that resonate within mob and are important to the story actually.
Tumblr media
like this is really interesting!!!! granted mogami keiji is hyperblasting projections onto mob due to the way he lived in life as a victim of circumstance compared to mob who had people who loved him to fall back onto struggling with slightly similar gripes surrounding his psychic powers that mogami is insane about but he does sort of make a point here.
whether mob really realizes it or not despite his attempts to live as psychic power free as possible when it comes to his interpersonal relationships they DO have an effect on his life and mentality. subconsciously he does have a last resort when it comes to solving his problems and the mogami arc really focuses in on mob learning to embrace this part of him that others have chosen to show kindness to. while having psychic powers doesn't make you more or less special and doesn't determine your worth circumstances can change how prominent or significant it is in your life. leading back to the message about how others who love you unconditionally will love every part of you and embrace them as a core part of you rather than see them as obstacles or things to be wary of.
Tumblr media
also really interesting is how. genuinely sad mogami's worldview is. for all we know this might not even be the case and spirit powerscaling could rely on something completely different emotional response or not but the way mogami turns completely towards stress and negative emotions being the cause for immense spiritual power using himself as an analogy has a lot to say about how miserable he is.
a big chunk of mogami arc is focusing on how stewing in all the negative aspects of the world and refusing to embrace change makes you. a sad person. life is about living girlies and making attempts to heal and be vulnerable and honest to others to form emotional connection is something difficult but brave. and to value the connections already established in our lives is something to be grateful about and cherish
Tumblr media
lot to say about mogami keiji being a victim of circumstance and his unbridled pessimism taking over both his life and afterlife until he starts to pursue settling grudges as a way of self validation and gratification under the guise of vengeance but what i will say is that though bad people exist in this world good people do too and to cherish those who treat you kindly will do you many favors
Tumblr media
love you mob psycho forever and always. anyways uhh uhhhh your qualities don't make you special or determine your worth but they do impact how you live your life and the connections you make with other people both positively and negatively. and it's important to cherish people who accept these qualities as parts of you and embrace you as a whole because i don't know go live laugh love

I very much know this is because Jessica Cruz's origin story was written by Geoff Johns in a shitty comic, but by God is there so much going on there. Like damn.
Like there's the really, genuinely compelling stuff, for example the presence of ring horror and loss of control w Jess and Power Ring/Volthoom + the implications of that (character wise, both before and after JL 50) which is just SO interesting (and angsty!) to me personally
But then there's also more plot holes than you can shake a stick at as well (where did Jess get her ring. Guys it just showed up who died where did she get it from GUYS-)
All interspersed between some of the worst character writing for other Justice League members in existence (Wondy fans you know what I mean) and crazy ass plots out there

amity with alador's nose means So Much to me
a bit because representation of girls with big/hooked/bumpy noses is important to me
but also a lot from a writing and character design perspective with Metaphors
like, her canon design is the spitting image of odalia, aside from hair and eye colour, and being a bit slimmer than young odalia
and that does have its interesting symbolism. something about sharing traits with her but becoming a good person anyway. and the angsty but relatable feeling of looking in the mirror and seeing your abuser's physical features and having to live with that.
and of course the hair symbolism. she has alador's natural hair colour. but odalia tries to cover that up, replace it with her own hair colour. tries to make amity more like herself and less like alador, both physically and personality-wise. but no matter how hard she tries, amity's natural self pushes through, even in early s1 when she's most under odalia's influence.
and then amity, when she sheds her mother's influence, gets rid of the green. and she replaces it with purple. it's neither of her parents' hair colour. it's her own. it's the colour of her magic (sidenote: how tf is a witch's magic colour determined? it usually matches with their track/coven but there are plenty of exceptions, like how raine's is yellow rather than red). it's also a colour we associate with luz, the character who helped her be her real self. and, of course, it's abomination coloured. it's her power and interest and her hard work.
abominations are also something she shares with alador. but the way she uses abomination magic is often different than how alador uses it. first off, she doesn't incorporate any of the mechanical elements that he does (elements that are connected to the specific way odalia abuses him that he tried to protect the kids from, but also the way he neglected his children). but also, iirc, he almost always uses abomination matter in its normal sludge form or as standard abomination constructs/creatures. but amity, as the series goes on, starts showing her own style of abomination magic, where she forms abomination matter into different objects. we see alador do this once, and it's to give *amity* a pair of mittens.
she keeps a tiny bit of brown, though. it's her natural hair, and it's something she gets from alador.
OKAY NOW IMAGINE if amity had alador's nose instead of odalia's
we keep all of the above hair symbolism, of course. that doesn't change at all.
and we keep a lot of the ways that she looks like odalia. we keep the reminder that she chooses to be a good person despite having similarities to her mother.
but we get a reminder of her connection to her dad right smack-dab in the middle of her face. it's something odalia couldn't get rid of, no matter how hard she tries. it's a reminder to her that she can't force amity to be a copy of herself, something odalia probably resents. sure, we get that a bit with the kids' golden eyes, and it ties in with amity's brown hair. but having more features from her father would further drive the point home
not to mention, it ties in with the reason i want more representation of big/hooked noses in the first place. in real life they're often considered flaws. i should hope this idea does not exist in the boiling isles, especially with its roots in eurocentrism. but us, as viewers, know about that prejudice. and it would feel important to me, to have a character, who represents everything wrong with wealth and privilege, be implied to dislike that feature AND THEN have every part of her mindset be repeatedly shown as wrong and harmful and evil
