MHA Chapter 407 spoilers translations

This week’s initial tentative super rough/literal translations under the cut.

1 その娼婦は一年程前から病に罹っていたそのしょうふはいちねんほどまえからやまいにかかっていた sono shoufu wa ichinen hodo mae kara yamai ni kakatte ita That prostitute had been ill since about a year prior.

2 硬質の疣贅が左腕に生えていたこうしつのいぼがひだりうでにはえていた koushitsu no ibo ga hidari ude ni haete ita A hard wart had been growing on her left arm.

4 コンビナート方面で"異能"の連中が結集し始めたそうだコンビナートほうめんで"いのう"のれんちゅうがけっしゅうしはじめたそうだ KONBINAATO houmen de "inou" no renchuu ga kesshuu shi hajimeta sou da "It seems that the meta abilities gangs have begun to gather around the industrial complex."

5 昨夜デモ隊が衝突した奴等だな…… さくやデモたいがしょうとつしたやつらだな…… sakuya DEMO tai ga shoutotsu shita yatsura da na...... "They're the ones the demonstrators clashed with last night......"

2 その赤児は生まれながらに不遜だったそのあかごはうまれながらにふそんだった sono akago wa umare nagara ni fuson datta That baby was born conceited.

3 身の回り全てが自身の所有物でありみのまわりすべてがじしんのしょゆうぶつであり mi no mawari subete ga jishin no shoyuubutsu de ari Everything around him was his own property.

I think the description is saying that the baby would look at others and see them as the same as everything else in the world: something that existed as his property. Therefore those that gave him nothing were confusing, were question marks, and he harbored doubts and suspicions about them as a result.)

出身地について2023年1月17日時点のウィキペディアでは「東京都」となっていたが、石川本人は「出身地は言っていないような気がする。明かしていないと思う。なぜか東京都になってます。」と述べている。また同時点でのウィキペディアで職業として「YouTuber」が挙げられていたが、この点について「イベントなどで、YouTubeから知りましたと人から言われ嬉しいけれど、断じてYouTuberではない。」と述べている。

高校時代の部活はチアダンス部。部長を務め週6あるいは週7練習していたが、決して強い部ではなく、卒業してから同部は全国大会出場したという。一方で運動はある程度できるが、インドア派であり、（幼少時は）『TOKYO MXとBS11で育った』と語るほど新旧問わずアニメ作品を好む。「私にとってアニメは、大げさでなく生きる意味。この世界からアニメがなくなったら、死んじゃいます」とも述べている。漫画に関してもアニメ原作を中心に2022年時点で自宅に1,000冊、電子書籍1,000冊を保持している。石川は「セクシー女優の趣味がオタクなんじゃなくて、私の場合はオタクがたまたまセクシー女優をやっているだけ」と、これらの趣味について言及している。

プライベートでは正常位、寝バック、たまに騎乗位程度だったため、AVでの体位の豊富さに驚いた。またプライベートではセックス中にしゃべらないため、行為中も会話をするというAV撮影がすごい不思議だったという。

目と髪の色は茶色で、色白の顔立ちが関係者やファンに「なんちゃら坂の誰々」と言われるが、国内の女性アイドル事情に疎く「私がぜんぜんわからないので、言われても覚えてられないんです」と述べている。

好きな配信者はもこう。（アニメ以外は）テレビは観ず、インターネット配信（主にニコニコ動画配信）を見て育った。自身では闇属性のオタクと表現している。

人見知りするタイプだが、オタク気質なので趣味のこととか、気持ちが盛り上がる話がはじまると早口でめちゃめちゃ話すという。

好きな食べ物はアイスクリーム、自宅の冷凍冷蔵庫には大量のアイスクリームが常時ストックされている。毒展を通じ、2023年時点では虫食と毒きのこ類にも関心を持つ。

デビュー作以降、いわゆるパイパンである。「髪の毛以外の体毛は不要」と考えており、高校時代に親の許可を得て脱毛を行ってパイパンにした。回りの友達がパイパンが多く、「楽だよ」と聞いて「じゃ私もやろっかな」と思ったという。また全身の脱毛をしている。下半身の脱毛は母に相談したうえで高校生で永久脱毛している。

自室に陰毛およびすね毛を落とされて以来、歴代の交際相手にも脱毛を求めている他自分のベッドでセックスするのも嫌い。潔癖症である。友人にも自宅には足を洗ってから入ってもらっている他男性は自宅に入れないレベルの潔癖で、水回りは特に綺麗にしている。

舞台版月ともぐら胸キュングランプリの感想として「舞台で演技をしたことがないし、そもそもみんなでイベントをするような経験自体が初めてだったので、会場に着くまでずっと緊張してた」「私たちはそんなに順位にこだわってなかったからね」と答えている。

「民主党政権のどこがどう悪夢だったのかきちんとした説明を聞いたことがない」という主張は定期的に出現しますね。とはいえさすがに「聞いたことがない」なんてはずはないので、おそらく「自分の気に入る説明ではない」という意味か、「バカに分かるように説明したところで、そもそもバカは聞いてない」パターンのいずれかとは思いますが。悪夢のような時代を生き抜いてきた者として私が言えるのは、「とにかく、あのような惨劇は二度と繰り返してはならない」ということだけです。あの時代がいかに酷いものであったか、ご存知ない方もぜひこの機会に知って頂きたいので、支持者から叩かれること覚悟で全力で反論していきますね。個人的に、「悪夢の民主党政権」における大きな問題点は次の3点と考えています。 (1)国家運営能力の欠如により、内政上の失敗を数多く引き起こし、国益を損ない続けた。 (2)拙劣な外交を繰り返し、日米関係をはじめ、周辺諸国からの信頼を大きく毀損した。 (3)総理･閣僚をはじめとする所属議員の度重なる不祥事や、自分たちに都合が悪い情報を隠蔽する体質によって、国民の政治に対する信頼を失い続けた。では、それぞれどんなことがあったか振り返っていきましょう。はらわたが煮えくり返る覚悟で読み進めてください。 (1)国家運営能力の欠如・財源の見込みが甘く、政権交代の際に掲げたマニフェストはほぼ未達成。・官僚を敵視して排除し、国家業務の停滞と質低下を招いた。・金融政策と財政政策が食い違い、タイミングの悪い増税も重なり、景気や株価は低迷を続けた。・歴史的水準まで進んだ円高を放置し、デフレを加速させた。・法的根拠がないばかりでなく、仕分人の選定や対象事業選定にも透明性を欠いた「事業仕分け」をデフレ時におこない、必要な公共投資を削減。経済を悪化させたにも関わらず、結果に責任を負わなかった。・「コンクリートから人へ」という誤った政策により、災害対策を疎かにしたうえ、地域社会を破壊した。・「朝鮮王室儀軌引渡」「尖閣事件の船長釈放」「運用3号通知」「国家公務員採用大幅減」など、閣僚たちが思い付きレベルの意思決定を独断でおこない、結果的に我が国の将来に禍根を残した。・法的根拠のない組織を乱立させ、意思決定過程が曖昧になり、指揮命令系統も混乱。・法的根拠のない大臣や副大臣を任命したり、個人的な友人を参与に、党職員を内閣官房職員に任命するなど、ルールを無視、公私の別がつかない人事を実施。・原発停止、ダム建設中止など、法令根拠や事前協議が必要な決定を手続無視で断行。 (2)外交能力の欠如・普天間基地問題が迷走し、沖縄とアメリカの信頼を大きく損なった。・来日したオバマ大統領を日本に残したまま、鳩山総理がAPEC首脳会議に出席するためにシンガポールに向かうという非礼行為。・尖閣沖漁船衝突事件では、中国側の脅迫や報復に屈して船長を早々に釈放、不起訴に。その後の尖閣諸島国有化でも迷走。・領空侵犯が頻発するも、実効的な対策をとらず。・韓国に対しては、通貨スワップ協定締結、朝鮮王室儀軌引渡し、慰安婦問題での「知恵を絞っていきたい」発言など、不用意な譲歩を重ねた。・韓国の歴代大統領として初めて、竹島へ李明博大統領が上陸。・旧ソ連時代を含めて初めて、北方領土へロシア国家元首が上陸。・実現に向けた方策が何ら決まっていない状態で、国連気候変動サミットにおいて「CO2の25%削減」を突如国際公約化。・実現の見込みも全くないまま、G8の場で、「太陽光パネルを1000万戸に設置する」と突如国際公約をおこなった。 (3)閣僚･所属議員の度重なる不祥事と情報隠蔽体質・鳩山総理⇒偽装献金問題、脱税問題、引退撤回、「最低でも県外」「Trust me」「国民の皆様が聞く耳を持たなくなった」・菅(直人)総理⇒外国人献金問題、北朝鮮関係団体献金問題、「顔が見たくなければ法案を通せ」・野田総理⇒在日韓国人献金問題、脱税企業献金問題、民団選挙協力お礼発言、「大きな音だね」・小沢元代表⇒政治資金規正法違反容疑で強制起訴(無罪判決)、献金虚偽記載で公設秘書が逮捕(有罪判決) ・仙谷官房長官⇒尖閣漁船衝突事件、「自衛隊は暴力装置」・赤松農水大臣⇒口蹄疫問題、「だから早く殺せって言ってるのに」・松本復興担当大臣⇒「知恵を出さないやつは助けない」「書いたらその社は終わりだから」・長妻厚労大臣⇒運用3号独断決定、職務停滞・蓮舫行政刷新担当大臣⇒事務所費架空計上問題、国会内ファッション雑誌撮影、「2位じゃダメなんでしょうか?」・前原外務大臣⇒外国人から政治献金受領・川端文科大臣⇒事務所費架空計上問題、キャバクラ費用を政治資金で計上・鹿野農水大臣⇒対中不正輸出疑惑、機密漏洩疑惑・鉢呂経産大臣⇒「死の街」「放射能をうつす」・一川防衛大臣⇒「安全保障に関しては素人」・柳田法務大臣⇒「答弁は二つだけ覚えておけばいい」・山岡消費者担当大臣⇒マルチ商法業者からの献金問題・中井国家公安委員長⇒議員宿舎にホステス連れ込み&カードキー貸与、式典で秋篠宮ご夫妻に「早く座れよ」とヤジ・小林議員⇒違法献金問題で選対委員長が逮捕、選対幹部が公職選挙法違反で有罪・土肥議員⇒竹島領有権放棄を日本側に求める「日韓共同宣言」に署名・横峯議員⇒賭けゴルフ、女性暴行、恐喝事件への関与・緒方議員⇒「スーパー堤防はスーパー無駄遣い」・原発事故対応（SPEEDI、米実測値の非公表、議事録不作成など）、尖閣ビデオ、北朝鮮ミサイル発射への対応、温暖化対策の家計負担、年金改革の財政試算など、自分たちに都合が悪い情報は隠蔽し、政府への深刻な不信感を招いた。・総理-閣僚間で見解の方向性や意見の不一致が常態化。それらも含め、自民党で同様の事態があれば野党のみならずマスコミも総出で吊し上げられる事態となるが、マスコミも概ね民主党に好意的な報道姿勢。そんなに民主党時代が良かったなら、下野以降何度でも政権を取り戻すチャンスはあったはず。なのにただ一度もそうなっていないということは、それが民意ということです。私もあんな地獄のような時代は二度と御免です。

Wuxing – the connections between the Five Dragon Kings (Ref) and the Five Elements philosophy

To better understand the origins of the Five Dragon Kings and the ancient Chinese legend, it is worth mentioning the wuxing of natural philosophy, which states that all things are composed of five elements: fire, water, wood, metal and earth.

The underlying idea is that the five elements 'influence each other, and that through their birth and death, heaven and earth change and circulate'.

The five elements are described as followed:

Wood/Spring: a period of growth, which generates abundant vitality, movement and wind.

Fire/Summer: a period of swelling, flowering, expanding with heat.

Earth is associated with ripening of grains in the yellow fields of late summer.

Metal/Autumn: a period of harvesting, collecting and dryness.

Water/Winter: a period of retreat, stillness, contracting and coolness.

The wuxing system, in use since the Han dynasty (2nd century BCE), appears in many seemingly disparate fields of early Chinese thought, including music, feng shui, alchemy, astrology, martial arts, military strategy, I Ching divination, and traditional medicine, serving as a metaphysics based on cosmic analogy.

The wuxing originally referred to the five major planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Mars and Venus), which were thought of as the five forces that create life on earth. Wu Xing litterally means moving star and describes the five types of Qi (all the vital substances) cycles through various stages of transformation. As yin and yang continuously adjust to one another and transform into one another in a never-ending dance of harmony, they tend to do so in a predictable pattern.

The lists of correlations for the five elements are diverse, but there are two cycles explaining the major interaction. The yin-yang interaction, which by increasing or decreasing the qualities and functions associated with a particular phase, it may either nourish a phase that is in deficiency or drain a phase that is in excess or restrain a phase that is exerting too much influence (see below):

The Huainanzi (2nd BCE) describes the five colored dragons (azure/green, red, white, black, yellow) and their associations (Chapter 4: Terrestrial Forms), as well as the placement of sacred beasts in the five directions (the Four Symbols beasts, dragon, tiger, bird, tortoise in the four cardinal directions and the yellow dragon.

五方龍王（参照）と五行思想の関連性

ここで、五方龍王の起源、そして古代中国の伝説をよく理解するために、万物は火・水・木・金・土の5種類の元素からなる、という自然哲学の五行思想について触れておきましょう。 5種類の元素は「互いに影響を与え合い、その生滅盛衰によって天地万物が変化し、循環する」という考えが根底に存在する。

五行は次のように説明されている：

木は、春の豊かな生命力、動き、風を生み出す成長期。

火は、夏の太陽の暖かさの下で行われる成熟の過程、熱で膨張する時期。

土は、晩夏の黄色い野原での穀物の成熟に関連している。

金は、秋の収穫、収集、乾燥の時期。

水は、冬の雪に覆われた暗い大地の中に潜む新しい生命の可能性と静寂の時期。漢の時代 (紀元前2世紀頃) から使用されてきた五行説は、音楽、風水、錬金術、占星術、武術、軍事戦略、易経、伝統医学など、中国初期の思想の一見バラバラに見える多くの分野に登場し、宇宙の類推に基づく形而上学として機能している。

五行とは文字通り「動く星」を意味し、五種類の気（生命維持に必要なすべての物質）が様々な変容の段階を経て循環することを表している。陰と陽は絶え間なく互いに調整し合い、調和の終わりのないダンスで互いに変化していくため、予測可能なパターンで変化する傾向がある。

五行の相関関係は多様だが、主要な相互作用を説明する2つのサイクルがある。陰陽の相互作用は、特定の相に関連する資質や機能を増減させることで、不足している相に栄養を与えたり、過剰な相を排出したり、影響力を及ぼしすぎている相を抑制したりする (以下参照):

相生（陽）のサイクル

木は燃えて火を生む

火が土 (灰) をつくる

土は金属を産出する

金属は表面に水を集める

水は木を育てる

相克（陰）のサイクル

木は大地を構成する

土は水を堰き止める

水は火を消す

火は金属を溶かす

金属が木を切る

『淮南子』（紀元前2世紀）には、五色の龍（紺碧・緑、赤、白、黒、黄）とその関連性 (第4章: 地の形)、五方位への聖獣の配置（四枢の四象徴獣、龍、虎、鳥、亀、黄龍）が記述されている。

So, my Japanese isn't great, but I wanted to try to clarify something on here that Google Translate isn't capturing, namely from this part: Saying that there are two types of gates and then defining them both as "Power to bring" doesn't make sense in English. Why make a distinction between the two if you're gonna define them the same way? But in the Japanese, it's not quite the same words used for both: "持ってくる力" (motte kuru chikara) vs. "持っていく力" (motte iku chikara. 力 (chikara) just means "power," so we'll set that aside for now since that part is actually consistent across both items. 持って (motte) is also consistent across both items. This means "carrying" or "holding," like you'd hold a bag or a purse or a backpack or something that you're taking around with you. The big difference is between くる (kuru) and いく (iku). These are actually the kana (phonetic) versions of two kanji characters: 来る (kuru) - to come 行く (iku) - to go That provides us with a nice little pair of opposites, and changes our literal definitions as follows: 持ってくる力 (motte kuru chikara) - Power to come carrying 持っていく力 (motte iku chikara) - Power to go carrying So... they're both kinda "power to bring" but it would be more accurate to say one brings and one removes. Or, if you're feeling dramatic, one giveth and one taketh away.

石森プロ時代のお話を。 https://x.com/takigawa_w/status/1789176940924223586?s=46&t=8Vf8aUwk_B-ZbQ5UAGv05w 2011年3月11日東日本大震災石ノ森萬画館のある石巻市、石ノ森章太郎ふるさと記念館のある登米市も被災しました。特に北上川の中州にある石ノ森萬画館は津波に往復で襲われました。津波が押し寄せた時、一階の玄関エントランスなどはビルっぽい四角い形で瓦礫が突っ込みダメージを受けました。が、それより上は丸い形状が幸いして津波が逃げて建物全体の破壊は免れました。なんと、石ノ森萬画館は石ノ森章太郎先生が生前に「中州に降り立った宇宙船のイメージで」との設計コンセプトで丸みを帯びた楕円形のフォルムだったのです。石ノ森章太郎先生が起こした奇跡と感じました。震災の当日、地震と津波に建物は耐えたものの、中州の橋の欄干に津波で流されかけた方々、約20名が命からがら、掴まっていました。石ノ森萬画館のOさんがこれを見つけて「萬画館の中に入ってください！」と招き入れました。しかし北上川を上った津波が戻って来たのです。そこで再び欄干に摑まる別の約20名の方々。またOさんが、萬画館に招き入れ、約40名の方々とOさんは、余震の中、萬画館で過ごします。幸い、萬画館には非常用電源もあり、レストラン用の食材もあったので、石ノ森萬画館を避難所がわりに5日間過ごしたそうです。石ノ森萬画館の職員家族の方も奇跡的に皆さんご無事でした。以上は全て後から聞いた話ですが石巻市では有名な話となりニュースやマンガにもなりました。東京に居た我々は心配しながら石ノ森萬画館のK役員に連絡を取り「必要なものは何ですか？」とお聞きしました。きっと食糧、医療、衣料など不足しているものが沢山あると思ったからです。3月19日の事です。するとKさんは「石ノ森章太郎先生の生原稿が10万枚、石ノ森萬画館に保存されています。幸い棚から一つも崩れずに浸水もせずに無事です。ただ玄関ドアが壊れてしまい、防犯的に危ないので生原稿を引き取ってくれませんか」と仰るのです。あんなに大変な時に心配しているのは石ノ森章太郎先生の生原稿なのです。僕は「取りに行きます。取りに行きますからその際に必要な物資を持って行きます。」とお伝えして、その日からAmazon、楽天などで簡単に食べられる各種食品、オムツ、生理用品、などなどを会社で買い込みました。震災直後はそれらの品々こそ、なかなか物不足だったのですが、何とか集め集めて、Kさんと相談して、ようやく東北自動車道も復旧していた3月30日早朝5時にレンタルした（ガソリン不足だったので）プリウスに社員2人と僕、2トントラック🚚とその運転手さんとで、石巻に向かいました。途中、渋滞があったり、被害のあった道を通りながら、石巻インターに着いたのは午後1時頃だったと思います。石巻インターに付くと高速道路の係員のオッチャンが「どこから来たの？あ、東京。何か運んでるの？」と聞かれたので「救援用の物資、食べ物を後ろのトラックに積んで来ました。」と答えると「許可証もらって来たの？」と言うので「分かりません。」と答えると「許可証あれば只になるんだけど、無いかぁ。東京からかぁ、高いなぁ、もう高いからタダでいいよ！行きな！」と無料で通してくれたのです。ちょっとビックリしましたが、有り難く受け入れ、石巻インターを通過しました。そこから石巻市に向かうと最初は道もさほど荒れていなかったのですが、石巻市に近づくにつれて、瓦礫は増え道は荒れ、市内に入れば電信柱の上の方に何かが突き刺さり、船は乗り上げ、震災がいかに激烈なものであったかは、否が応でも心に刻み込まれました。石森プロの社員二人とは「どんな事があっても俺たちは冷静でいような！」と誓い合っていたのですが、あの光景は心にズシリ、ズシリとダメージを与えます。ようやくの思いで、石ノ森萬画館に着きましたが、中州にあった他の建物は見当たらず瓦礫の中に石ノ森萬画館はありました。そこでKさん達にお会いできて最初にKさんが仰ったのは「遠い所、来ていただき本当に申し訳ありません。先生の生原稿は全部、無事ですから。」でした。その言葉を聞いて、ご本人達がどんなにか辛い状況だったろうに、この言葉をかけられて、魂が震えるほど感動、感激しました。危うく泣きかけました。これが日本人これが東北人これが石ノ森萬画館これがKさん。日本全体に「日本はどうなるのか」という気分が満ちていた2011年3月。僕はその時に「大丈夫だ」と確信したのです。その後、石巻市内に設置されたサイボーグ009や仮面ライダーの立像を見たのですが、なぜか全て無事で更に仮面ライダーの立像などはピカピカに綺麗なのです。聞けば「石巻市民の方が埃がついて可哀想だからと磨いてくれているようです」とのこと。これも涙腺に来ました。 #東日本大震災 #石ノ森萬画館 #石巻市 #石森プロ #サイボーグ009 #仮面ライダー

ヒロオガワの秋の新譜「叙情 - Lyric Suite」ですが、ジャケットの原案が上がってきました。これは、名古屋、鶴舞公園の噴水で、それを加工してジャケ写にしました。まだ仮の状態なので、デザイナーさんが、どこまで仕上げてくれるのかが、楽しみです。新譜の進捗状況は、初回マスタリングプルーフの検聴を終え、現在、エンジニアの手により、手直しの最中らしいです。修正版を待機中。

The jacket design for Hiro Ogawa's new autumn album ``Lyric Suite'' has been submitted. This is a fountain at Tsurumai Park in Nagoya, and I edited it into the jacket photo. It's still in its preliminary state, so I'm looking forward to seeing how far the designer will go with it. As for the progress of the new album, it seems that the first mastering proof has been listened to and is currently being revised by engineers. Waiting for revised version.

Aspen trees are all native to cold regions with cool summers, in the north of the northern hemisphere, extending south at high-altitude areas such as mountains or high plains.

The aspen is referred to as quaking aspen or trembling aspen because the leaves "quake" or tremble in the wind. This is due to their flattened petioles which reduce aerodynamic drag on the trunk and branches, so that they catch any slight breeze, making the leaves tremble, flutter and make a soft, rustling sound each time they do so. In autumn, the leaves turn bright yellow and sometimes red, and when they fade further and turn black, they fall off.

The ancient Celts believed that the wind was a messenger of the word of the gods and therefore considered anything that was in tune with the wind sacred. The same is true of the aspen tree. The aspen, which has the best ears of all trees, always rustled its leaves in response to the voice of the gods.

However, the aspen, with its close connection to death and the underworld, came to be regarded as a tree of misfortune. In earlier times, corpses and graves were counted with a cane made of aspen named fé, and people were terribly afraid of the calamities that would befall them if they were struck with this cane. The connection with the seasons, rest and rebirth was often overlooked, and many people, cowering in fear, heard only the abominable sound of aspen leaves rustling in the wind. However, the teachings of the aspen are about overcoming the fear of death, the fear of the unknown and fear itself. The aspen was called the 'shield tree' by the Irish Celts, and is said to have been their favourite tree for making shields. This was not only because aspens provided a reassuring shield, but also because they protected us from flinching in the face of the unknown, once we had taken their teachings to heart.

Incense made from aspens is burned continuously during Halloween (Celtic festival of Samhain). Halloween is the time of year when the distance between this world and the underworld is at its closest, and the period that ushers in the new year. Samhain is also the festival of the New Year, which takes place on November the 1st, the beginning of the year, but it is also the festival of the dead. It is believed that during nights between the end of the year and the beginning of the new year, the border with the other world disappears, the souls of the dead visit their relatives, and demons and evil spirits cause damage to crops and livestock.

Ancient Celtic cultures were known to carve turnips or potatoes and place embers inside to ward off evil spirits. That's because Ireland didn't have pumpkins. In England, large beets were used. When immigrants brought over their carving tradition, Americans began carving jack-o'-lanterns from pumpkins.

ポプラ (ｾｲﾖｳﾔﾏﾅﾗｼ‘山鳴らし’) の木はすべて、北半球の北部で夏が涼しく寒い地域に自生し、南は山や高原などの標高の高い地域に広がっている。

ポプラは、葉が風で「震える」ことから、山鳴らしと呼ばれている。これは、幹や枝の空気抵抗を減らすために葉柄が平らになっているためで、どんな微風もとらえ、その度に葉は震え、はためき、さらさらと柔らかな音を立てる。秋になると、葉は鮮やかな黄色に色づき、時には赤くなり、さらに色あせて黒くなると落葉する。

古代ケルト人は、風は神の言葉を伝える使者と信じていたため、風と同調するものは何でも神聖視していた。ポプラの木も同様だ。すべての木の中で最も優れた耳を持つポプラは、いつも神の声に応じて葉をそよがせていたのだ。

ところが、死や地下の国とつながりの深いポプラは、不幸を招く木とみなされるようになった。その昔、死体や墓はフェという名前の、ポプラでできた杖で数えられていたし、この杖で打たれると災難がふりかかると人々はひどく恐れていた。四季、安息、再生との関わりはしばしば見過ごしにされ、恐怖に身をすくませた多くの人たちは、風にそよぐポプラの葉音に忌まわしい声だけを聞き取った。しかし、ポプラの教えは、死の恐怖、未知なるものへの恐れ、そして恐怖心そのものを克服することにあるのだ。ポプラは、アイルランドのケルト人に「楯の木」と呼ばれ、彼らが楯をつくるのに最も好んだ木と言われている。それは、ポプラが単に心強い防具になっただけに留まらず、ひとたびポプラの教えを我がものとしたなら、未知なるものを前にしてもたじろがないように守ってくれたからに他ならない。

ハロウィン (ケルトのサウィン祭)の期間中、ポプラから作られたお香が焚かれ続ける。ハロウィンは、現世と冥界の距離が最も近くなる時期であり、新年を迎える期間でもある。サウィンは、1年の始まりである11月1日に行われる新年の祭りでもあるが、同時に死者の祭りでもある。年末から新年が始まるまでの夜は、あの世との境界がなくなり、死者の魂が親族を訪ね、悪魔や悪霊が農作物や家畜に被害を与えると信じられている。

古代ケルト文化圏では、悪霊を追い払うためにカブやジャガイモを刻んで中に燠火を入れていたことが知られている。アイルランドにはカボチャがなかったからだ。イギリスでは大きなビーツが使われた。移民がカボチャを彫る習慣を持ち込むと、アメリカ人はカボチャからジャック・オー・ランタンを彫るようになった。
