BEHIND THE WEB: “Me And My” Sampled Track

The original Group crashed their car into the bridge, but the musical mobile that is Icona Pop continues to roll along after their international smash, “I Love It”. It has thus far peaked at #7 on the Hot 100. It could be that we’re looking at a future one-hit wonder for the books because it’ll likely be impossible to top this summery sound, but the duo is trying once again with a new single entitled “Girlfriend”. It started to spread a few days ago when a rip made its way across the blogosphere and message boards, though most of those links and videos have been taken down. An official audio clip on the group’s YouTube account just went up several hours ago. It’s another catchy number that bounces to the beat of a 90’s rap sample that also seemed to jive for one of today’s top power couples in music. Time to put it in drive and go behind the groove:

“’03 Bonnie & Clyde”, Jay-Z featuring Beyoncé (#4, 2003) In terms of the charts, this is the biggest single that incorporated “Girlfriend”, released in the fall of 2002. The future Mr. and Mrs. Carter created the song on the whim of the rapper’s then-producer Kanye West and appeared on Jay-Z‘s album The Blueprint 2: The Gift & the Curse. Several parts of the 2Pac composition are sampled within this song. Musically, both the bass and guitar lines are lifted from it. Like the new Icona Pop song, the lyrical sample from “Girlfriend” comes from the chorus: “All I need in this life of sin is me and my girlfriend (me and my girlfriend)/Down right to the very end, just me and my boyfriend (me and my boyfriend)”, although “Bonnie” interpolates a few other lines, such as “Look for me, lost in the whirlwind, ’96 Bonnie and Clyde” into “Look for me, Young B, cruisin’ down the westside highway.” That tail-end of the lyric also inspired the name of the song, as well as the bank-robbing couple themselves (Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow), who are portrayed in the music video by our rapping and singing couple. It was ultimately a success in terms of sales and their budding relationship. Awww!

Around the same time that “Bonnie” was released as a single, a Toni Braxton track entitled “Me And My Boyfriend” (utilizing the same sample) was scheduled to be released from her album More Than A Woman. Braxton took the press, stating that Jay-Z and his then-producer Kanye West had stolen her concept, but ultimately backed down as the era dissolved mostly in part to Braxton’s impending pregnancy in March 2003. Jay-Z also fired back stating that he didn’t intentionally use the song out of revenge or spite, claiming that he would have collaborated with Braxton had he known about the issue.

"Are you going to allow me to treat you like a princess tonight?" You had to stop yourself from grabbing him by the collar and letting your neediness out in front of everyone as his words were barely audible and ghosted the shell of your ear.

However, you realized it merited the pause, the gleam in Ronald's eyes offering everything as he said thanks to his partners and directed you out of the arena, his hand squeezed immovably to the little of your back.

Your face was burning as you let him slide behind the wheel, the seat promptly pushed back as he held his arm out wide as he unlocked the car and grabbed your wrist as he pulled you back from clambering into the passenger seat. His hand dropped lower as he unlocked the vehicle.

You finally gave in and let the door close behind you with your thighs thrown in front of his legs, a cocky, shit-eating grin plastered on his face. And you wouldn't be lying if you said you didn't like how close you were, with your chests pressed against one another and your breath fluttering across his face as you said, "you did really well today, you know that right?."

As he hummed against you, his mouth pecked at the skin on your neck, teeth grazing your sweet spot. He didn't have to answer. Ronald's hands were already roaming your thighs as he harshly pulled at the material of your shorts, so there was no way you'd get home without at least a touch whenever he was in such a mood. it was a quiet request for you to lift up, fingers snaring around the belt as he pooled them at your knees, "show me how much you want me."

You didn't require telling two times as a hand went between your bodies and circled your clothing aside, scarcely getting an opportunity to move a greater amount of the slight cotton as his hand measured your midriff and directed you back to his thigh. As you rocked nervously against him a few times, spreading your excitement across his tense muscle and letting out a small whine of appreciation for your actions, his eyes darkened.

It was filthy and daring, and the parking lot was still partially full of cars belonging to teammates and staff members; But you didn't care because you pulled at the tiny curls with such force that your fingers reached the nape of his neck. "Look at you, so frantic for me. Is that how I treat you bebé?, is that right?"

Your eyes fluttering at his tone of voice and the pressure building in the pit of your stomach added to his words' ricochet to your clit as you felt your actions sped up slightly. As you listened to his heart thud in his chest, his skin was damp from the slickness you were leaving, and the friction sent your mind into a frenzy. He dipped his head, his mouth gliding over your nipples as your shirt was poked. "Come on bebé I know you want to cum for me," he cooed, his tongue flickering over the buds as he hummed at the way your back arched into him despite the laver of material between you two.

Gerard: Yeah, originally, the song-- um “Demolition Lovers” was supposed to be called “I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love,” but I just hate it when, like bands name-- Interviewer: (Dramatically) The title track of-- Gerard: The title track! Yeah, I just don’t like title tracks.

Ray: (After being asked his favorite songs) And the last song “Demolition Lovers” because that song took us just about 6 months to write. We had that song very ear-- like, parts of the song very early when we first started the band, and it just took 6 months to finally get it right, and to hear it...like how it sounds on the CD, was just-- is just incredible. It’s really moving, for me, and I think for all of us because it-- it took so long to get right.

Gerard: This song is called “Demolition Lovers,” and…there you go. (Laughs) It’s about uh-- you wanna know what it’s about? Interviewer: Yes Gerard: It’s about uh…a willing to dish out and receive bullets for somebody… (laughs) because you love them that much.
