Octavian headcanons :3

Another round of general Octavian headcanons, family edition! Would first like to state I’m not touching the legacy strands currently because stuff like Augustus Caesar and his demigod status in Pjo and all of that messes stuff up and I need more time to think about that and actually reading ToA and stuff.

Anyways, motivation for the Octavian post is to settle pre-audition jitters. Drama club beauty and the beast production, and auditions are tomorrow :,] gonna have to weasel my way through the singing part and hope my acting carries me the rest of the way through (in the words of Perseus Jackson; if I tried to sing I’m pretty sure it’d cause an avalanche.)

*Update because I’ve been writing this post for a day; we had dance auditions first! Pretty much just seeing where we are in dancing skills for this, it was really chill and fun and vibes were immaculate! Sorry this post is kind of ajifnsdb and I couldn’t get names down for these people, but I’d want to do that after figuring out.. naming work?

Big family, BIIIG family. In my head he has 8 other siblings (he is indeed the eighth child just for my amusement and it works for the little time before I work on how I think New Rome does naming, and I’m not touching that with a 39 and a half foot pole)

Old money family too. They’re descended from Emperors and they’ve managed to continue that legacy and have a family business, aware of Triumvirate holdings, may even have positive work relations.

Octavian is the 2nd youngest, in order his siblings go; 1st eldest, 2 kid, 3 child, 4&5 were twins, then 6,7,8,9. His poor mom has so many kids- but got solid breaks between them, though I don’t want to calculate ages at the moment.

Staring with his youngest sister. It’s Julia, that Julia. The one that’s Terminus’s little ‘assistant’. Octavian likes getting the opportunity to see her more often than most of his other siblings. She’s a little menace but gets away with it, nothing bad though, just mischievous.

Skipping Octavian we go to child 7. Who doesn’t have a name but just got out of the legion a few years ago, and moved out of the legion/New Rome. Bit of a rebel, but just wants to settle down with a family of their own and distance themselves from the family. They had a neutral-to negative relationship with Octavian. Octavian doesn’t like his siblings distance from Rome, and sibling likes Octavian but can’t help worry over him.

Kid 6 would be probably Gaius or something (again. Not about to go think too hard about what is gonna end up being Octavian’s Oc siblings. I can think about them later) he got out honorably after Mt.Tam, I like to think he’s still looking for a job and drifting in that University stage.

Kids 5&4 are twins, fraternal (maybe identical but I want more fraternal twins) and absolutely wild?? Jobs set up probably as something like loan sharks, they help upkeep the family fortune. Think like Ebenezer Scrooge or how Bob Marley are described in Christmas Carol. Taught Octavian everything they knew about blackmail, manipulation, etc. but they’re generally silly. Both usually try to charge people for various scams, think of the cartoonish dealer with the giant trench coat.

Child 3 has their own family and works for Bombillio’s (?) pretty comfortable with life. Fascinated with the mortal realm, slips on trips their parents take for business.

Child 2 and 1 have significantly branched off and live sort of anywhere, I feel like 1 is supervising that outpost in Canada (that’s another Hc I have that I talked about a LOOONG time ago) and then 2 probably lives out with their partner in San Fran and cats.

Okay a sorry I’m a little jittery because it is SNOWING!!!!! Where I am at least but still, SNOWING!! Sorry I couldn’t name anyone but still, wanted to get general family stuff down and writing posts like these calm me down when I’m feeling a bit aaaaaurgh.

Octavian has mostly good relationships with his siblings. Though he feels like he’s the only one really invested in being a citizen of New Rome and upholding the family name.

I’ll probably change around the siblings and their order whenever I decide how their ages work. But I feel they’re all relatively close in age and then Julia is just the odd one out.

His mother is a legacy from a newer family in New Rome, she’s pretty silly and generally just wants the best for her family.

His dad inherited the unnamed, unspecified family business/company and currently runs it, preserved his old crown awards and has them framed in his office, takes his family very seriously.

Okay, I’m working on the rankings research. It’s… a thing, but for now I might just make more of these random little hc posts, in between larger posts and passion stuff y’know?

Also maybe other fandoms? I’m still very much a Pjo person but I still wanna talk about other stuff lol,

Anyway here’s a quick Octavian thing I did, I’m still messing with his design, I feel like this might stick but I’ll still mess around with his hair, but I just wanted to add a little more to this post because it felt… pretty empty lol.

Also possible post on how some of the weapons characters have look? Would love to draw actual referenced things like IVILIS(? Don’t wanna go check but the Juno sword I think- Jason’s sword-) Reyna’s spear sword & dagger. Never doubt my ability to recommend this show. One of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). The leads have excellent chemistry although it’s low heat there’s still some really cute mutual kisses.

2 To My Star

Korea 2021 (Viki)

In the mood for something more grown up? TMS is a touch quirky to get into, but utterly charming once it hits its stride. This is the ultimate grumpy/sunshine pairing plus the most appealing light-filled kitchen of our dreams.

I don't like season 2 but others do. It is very clever.

3 We Best Love: No. 1 For You & Fighting Mr. 2nd

Taiwan 2021 (WeTV)

How about a uni + office BL? Brilliant acting saved this show from a messy (pretty classically manga) narrative with a lot of angst. You have to buy in to a yaoi aesthetic with this one, accept that things move fast and occasionally confuse, but that everything will be okay. It’s the ultimate pining seme meets the ultimate tsundere uke. WBL successfully manages to combine the best elements of Korean, Thai, and Japanese BL as it exists right now. Couple that to the insane chemistry from the leads, and we have one of the greatest BLs of all time, cooking higher heat to a recipe I doubt anyone else will ever be able to replicate since only Taiwan is this flexible.

4 He's Coming to Me

With only 8 8 eps and from GMMTV this is short, high quality and bingable for Thailand. Boy and ghost boy fall in love, must solve ghost’s murder. Peak pining but also pretty tame, features my favorite sweet but important coming out sequence in all BL. The third in my precious triumvirate of unbeatable Thai BLs, that are only nominally BL because the story, acting, and production values are so good.

(Together with Until We Meet Again & A Tale of Thousand Stars - those 2 are longer so I don't consider them as bingable, but if you want something to get really stuck into? Go to town.).

5 Color Rush

Korea 2021 (Viki)

A unique paranormal twist elevates this classic high school drama into a pitch-perfect allegory for the queer coming out experience and one of the best BLs of all time (I will fight you on this). Here's my battle essay.

6 HIStory 2: Crossing the Line

Taiwan 2018 (Viki)

Lin Pei Yu directs this sports romance (volleyball) with a good boy/bad boy pairing, and my hands-down favorite of the HIStory franchise. There is no clear seme/uke. Ostensibly it's high school set but Taiwan doesn't care about age appropriate actors. It's a very soft sweet romance with some ridiculously easily overcome conflict. There's great kisses but it's medium heat. The side dishes are the stepbrother trope but they’re very tame, and there’s no other triggers. It's not just my favorite of the franchise, it’s one of my favorite BLs with a perfect happy ending.

(The second H2 is also pretty good.)

7 Cherry Magic

The sweetest fluffiest magical realism BL, packaged as a pinning office romance, very low heat (practically chaste) but the cutest. It’s truly great.

8 Light On Me

Korea 2021 (Viki)

Korea does an elegant pastiche of traditional live action yaoi but all tropes are cleverly deployed to bolster one of the most riveting love triangles ever put on screen… and I don’t like love triangles. LoM strategically tailors classic BL tropes to 2 different semes resulting in pristine pacing, plot, and character development, explicitly serving narrative (not just to tick boxes). LoM is a master class in trope drops. (If you write fanfic or romance you should study this show.) Full review.

9 Be Loved In House: I Do

Taiwan 2021 Viki

A cute classy office set BL with a few plot raised eyebrows, but no other concerns. ALL THE TROPES plus a general sweet softness that’s pretty rare from Taiwan, who usually prefer to go hard, but all their signature domesticity.

10 Lovely Writer

Thailand 2021 (YouTube)

Thailand criticizes itself and the BL industry while simultaneously giving us classic seme/uke with great chemistry in a one-two punch of “we love it, but are we supposed to? and must we think this hard, yet enjoy it SO MUCH?” This show won’t appeal or make sense to those who don’t already have at least some Thai BL watching experience. What Lovely Writer does, at heart, is reexamine Thai BL has done to queerness, but in a very gentle way that has more to do with Thai BL growing up than any actual queer authenticity. It’s not parody or pastiche, but it is self reflective and trying to correct for some chronic mistakes. Whether it is ultimately successful in this matter is going to depend on the watcher’s relationship to BL and queer identity. But that’s what makes this show beautiful, interesting, and thought provoking. And I, for one, applaud the effort even if I didn’t personally connect to the characters.

Star Trek Beyond is easily the best of the three movies. I mean they're all really good but the third one is the culmination of all the character work and building the movies have done. It really shows how much Kirk, Spock and McCoy love and care for one another!

As soon as Kirk comes back on board, there Spock and Bones are flanking him on either side and nagging 😅

Kirk and Bones have a quiet moment together in the beginning because Kirk is feeling emotional and knows Bones will understand and allow him to be sappy. He can't let Spock see him like that.

Spock and Bones immediately head off together when red alert is announced. Being that they are 2nd and 3rd in command, they know the levity of the situation and are well aware of their responsibilities and the fact that they must get far away from the captain in case of a worst case scenario going down. The way Spock protects Bones as they wander the halls... the way Bones feels safe with Spock, safe enough to not even arm himself with a weapon!

It's a hell of a movie and I think they did a great job splitting all the bridge crew up to show they all love each other very much. But that being said, the triumvirate is very strong with this movie!! 🥰😁

If I am truly honest (and I don't know if I should be) the crows' plot at season 2 was the one that least left me pissed off, even with all the problems I think it was the one that (mostly) remained closer to the characters essence and development, and I still think it can be fixed and the books plot can work with all that

The Ravka plot and Alina's ending on the other hand and how it affects Zoya and the King of Scars plot is what made me truly mad. They adapted two books and turns out everything got rushed and the struggles Alina was supposed to have seemed shallow to me, they didn't deepened on some problems because they wanted to run it and put more than two books in a single season. And if they had the intention to adapt King of Scars duology (I mean we had the Demon King and the bee landing on Zoya as a tip) then why they chose to ignore important parts of the plot that would resonate in the next season, like the Apparat (he appeared once at the end without explanation), the soldat sol, the cult of the Sun Summoner (that leads to the cult of the Starless One), why putting Alina as the future queen of Ravka, why ignore the Triumvirate as the commanders of the Second Army (why ignore the Second Army cause I don't think Genya making the palace a safe place for grisha and otkazat'sya and Zoya training the grishas is really the 2nd army recognition). I feel like they wanted to rush things and important things was lost because of it and I don't know if it can be fixed

Piggybacking off of Greenteaandtattoos ask about interesting history facts (and the fact that you've become a conduit for random history tidbits now):

On the night before his assassination, Julius Caesar had dinner with one of his would-be assassins (Decimus) at a mutual friends house (Lepidus, of the 2nd triumvirate). Decimus was one of the three original conspirators, but also a Caesarian loyalist who had been spurned one too many times. He thought he had been found out at such a late hour, but attended anyway, as not going would be too suspicious.

They ate and drank and chatted late into the night. Most of the conversation was about the upcoming campaign that Caesar was planning. But as the drinking took its toll and the night wore on, the conversation turned philosophical.

Somehow, somebody brought up this question: "What's the best way to die?"

Lepidus and Decimus went back and forth arguing, while Caesar was uncharacteristically quiet. After a bit he told them that the best way to die would be "suddenly" and "unexpectedly."

I have to believe that Decimus, half-drunk, was dying inside.

The alpha series is genuinely mind-blowing, I've read both parts like 10 times already. Something about Mencken worrying a bit about his cardiovascular health got me soo!!!! Just something about him being so vulnerable with his obsession/love/lust for Roman and thus allowing us to see him vulnerable everywhere else. He's an old man! He thinks Roman is obviously beautiful! He buys Roman clothes! He has regular health check ups and regular health concerns for a man his age! It's all so argsgsgdhhdh idek where I'm going with this, but something about him being human, with the small glimpses of shame he can utilise, but still feels relative to his position, his base and his affair with Roman, when we usually only see him from Roman's view as an all-seeing, perfectly cool Patriarch-God is so tasty.

Also, I think Roman mentions in the first part that he's Menckens 2nd favourite thing (when he's trying to get his attention to tell him he's preggers) relative to the history docu, but in the second part, Mencken says that kissing Roman is his favourite act and I just think that sums it all up! Roman is fine with being number two, but obviously wants to be more. Mencken can admit to himself that Roman is his number one, but not actually say it to Roman, so they're constantly in an unbalanced system. Mencken knows what he is to Roman, what Roman is to him, but Roman only knows what Mencken is to him, not what he is to Mencken.

I need more mencken pov, you've given me a taste for it along with Canines and Of Hunger Deprived. Holy triumvirate of fics that allow us to see Jeryd as more than an object for Roman to project his desires and his idiosyncrasies onto (which I am completely cool with btw. I am always team objectify old men). He's a twisted man, but still a man with layers and I wanna bury myself in between them. Thank you so so so so soooooo much for your work. hey!!!!! i'm sorry this took like a week to answer. i'm not being hyperbolic when i say this is my favorite ask i've ever recieved and i've read it like. probably 20+ times

so. fanfiction - especially horny fanfic - is just fanfiction, and i get that. but writing is something that is a huge part of my life + deeply rewarding hobby that i haven't been able to meaningfully participate in since this year, for a multitude of reasons.

(if you look at my a03 account - i published 3 fics in 2014/2015 and then nothing again until 2023. i wasn't writing under a different pseud or working on original stuff. aside from university assignments, i did not write for 9 years.)

so when i write my silly little stories, in which i choose my words/pacing/details very deliberately, and then people send me messages like this that show not only enjoyment but also active engagement and that they paid attention to my details and liked them - well.

I like this idea, because I still daydream about a Golden Route. Specifically an anime adaptation written by Yasuyuki Mutō, the writer for the Sengoku Basara 2009 anime. (It's my daydream, I'll go as indulgent as I want!) And this idea helps solve some problems.

The big problem with a Golden Route, is that the story of FE3H begins its 2nd half by pretty much stating "this is the history of the unification of Fodlan". The story has to end with Fodlan uniting into one country. But in a Golden Route, where all 3 house leaders don't die, it's unlikely that Fodlan would unify, given their personalities and goals. Dimitri is very duty bound, and as his fans have pointed out, he would not abandon his throne again (…I mean, unless that one rare ending where he instituted a democratic monarchy, eventually progresses into a pure democracy. Maybe then, he'd leave the throne. But knowing Dimitri, he might even retain his royal figurehead status, just to fulfill more ceremonial duties for the government.) And then there's Edelgard, who is so resolved on her ideas for how governance should be done, that she doesn't veer to adapt external criticisms, nor accept that any other forms of government are unflawed enough to be allowed in Fodlan. Hence, the conquering. Claude is flexible though. He can and does, canonically, both stay to restructure the government, religion, and covered-up histories, and he also leaves to rule Almyra, or even ditch to pursue several romantic pairings. As someone once pointed out, the only reason Fodlan unified, was pure luck. The other 2 countries on the continent happened to collapse or lose their leaders, so whoever was left, kind of became the new dominating force in Fodlan by default. In Azure Moon, Edelgard is killed and Claude leaves Fodlan. In Crimson Flower, Dimitri is killed and Claude can either leave Fodlan or be murdered. In Verdant Wind, both Edelgard and Dimitri die, so Claude kind of gets Fodlan by default. Except that he gives it all to Byleth, so he can leave to become king of Almyra. If a Golden Route still has to end with the unification of Fodlan, then there has to be some other excuse why 2 of the 3 leaders cannot lead their countries. Which may be tricky, when only death will keep 2 of those 3 leaders away from taking on ruling responsibilities, and a Golden Route should be a story of them not dying in the war, resolving their issues, working together, and reaffirming that Friendship theme that Claude gave a speech about at the end of his Verdant Wind route.

But if Edelgard is going to die soon from her 2 Crests…That's helps solve the problem. Claude is always able to leave. Dimitri is not going to turn away from his responsibilities again. So if Edelgard dies prematurely, but just not from being killed as an enemy in war, then we can still get the Friendship and cooperation theme in a Golden Route, while retaining the "unified Fodlan" outcome.

This really makes a Golden Route easier to imagine in my head. Before, I was trying to think up excuses for why Adrestia would have to become assimilated into the new unified Fodlan, and I kept circling back to "Edelgard can't rule for some reason", but I just couldn't see her relinquishing rule. Also, I think that if all 3 House leaders worked together to win the war, then they would all be necessary and useful to ruling the new unified Fodlan, especially to continue the theme of cooperation/Friendship. But if they acted as some kind of triumvirate, how is that different from having 3 separate countries? I guess, 3 different systems of government would explain the separation into 3 countries. But if a Golden Route has them work together to defeat the Agarthans/Nemesis and see how well they work together, then I guess a triumvirate would work on a unified Fodlan, if they could all collaborate and agree to one new form of government for all of Fodlan. But my headcanons were getting so complicated, with Edelgard as this masked Prime Minister, hiding her identity so that the other former enemies of Adrestia wouldn't dismiss her contributions to the new system… Dimitri would rule Fodlan as king and Byleth would be Archbishop, just like Azure Moon. But Claude would stick around like Verdant Wind, just until he had helped reform the government and helped negotiate between the different factions. Then he'd leave Fodlan to become king of Almyra, like always. But my headcanons just didn't seem to fit Edelgard. If she just dies early, then that'll take a lot off my mind. (And then during peace negotiations between Fodlan and Almyra, King Dimitri and King Claude fall in love, then they have a "political" marriage, and Archbishop Byleth officiates the wedding,…)
