The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes reviews I've seen fixate on the story's discussion of whether humans are inherently good or inherently evil as if one side or the other is the correct answer. Meanwhile the story itself is showing that individual choice in every action--choosing to act out of either love or self-interest--is what truly matters in shaping society. A free and stable society requires that people be taught to make selfless choices rather than act out of fear. Instead of oppressing people into fearful order, citizens need to have the freedom to choose the good, and be educated with the values that teach them what good is.

my "hot" take on the show is that while it tried to dehumanize hannibal and make him seem like a god/devil, with no feelings, and apparently most of you do see him like that, I'm over here like "my bbg he has biiiig big feelings leave him alone" and "I trust no words that come out of Will Graham's mouth". i learned about Bill Haaste:

He injected the venom of several types of snake to acquire immunity. 20 of those occasions were near fatal and many of them left assorted scars on his hands.

More than 3 million snakes have passed through his hand since 1917, when he was 7 years old and picked up his first garden snake. His desire to explore species made him drop out of school and join an entertainment company that put on snake shows.

In 1947, Haast opened the serpentarium in Miami, where he performed with snakes, in which he drained their venom, and carried out various researches.

From these researches, Haast helped more than 6,000 people to heal from snakebites with his extracts from the venom to manufacture the antidote. Even without formal education, the North American had an excellent command over the science of snakes and the extraction of venoms.

The self-proclaimed Snake Man thus possessed antibodies to several different species of vipers, and on 21 different occasions, was able to save the lives of people bitten by the reptiles by giving them a blood transfusion.

With that, he realized that certain poisons could even prevent diseases like multiple sclerosis and arthritis. He believed that these poisons, which he injected himself daily, would be responsible for his reaching the age of 100 in golden health.

Ch 205: That Butler, Panic

The chapter is short (only 13 pages plus the cover, with a two page spread toward the end), but full of drama. The shit finally hits the fan and Snake learns what really happened to the circus troupe and what Doll really is.

My summary translation follows. Please be respectful of the work and money I put into these by not reposting without credit.

The chapter begins where the last left off, with the orphans, Finny, and Snake finding Doll being given a transfusion of Canopus blood by two of the human workers.

Snake asks why Doll looks in this condition, and the workers try to explain it away by saying Doll is getting a medical procedure for an illness.

But Theo calls them on their bullshit, saying they’re lying, recognizing the label that says Canopus on the blood Doll was getting.

He accuses Doll of being a star lord.

One of the workers basically challenges Theo back, asking what their intentions are and that they’d better think carefully before responding, while pulling a gun on them.

She fires, and Finny springs into action, protecting the orphan clones and getting hit in the shoulder in the process.

He yells at them to run, and they do, but Doll picks up a shard of glass and does a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon leap and springs over them, cutting off their escape.

Doll says now that they know everything, they won’t let them pass.

Snake is so shocked he speaks as himself, asking, begging for Doll to tell him that it isn’t true, that they aren’t a star lord.

Doll apologizes to him for lying, and says of all people, they didn’t want Snake to know the truth about them.

“I’m a monster,” Doll explains. “That night at father’s, I died. No… I was murdered. By Ciel Phantomhive.”

Doll explains how father (Baron Kelvin), Joker, and their entire family were killed like insects, and then recounts in graphic, sardonic detail how everyone died:

Wendy and Peter were hunted down and shot like prey by the maid;

Beast (and Dagger) were dredged in flour and deep fried alive;

And Jumbo was even worse— his guts and head were pulverized by the gardener.

On the final page, Doll tells Snake he’s been tricked into working for their enemy, and urges him, as family, to join them in getting revenge against the Phantomhives.

The chapter ends there, so we’ll need to wait for next month to see how Snake responds…! This also means that Undertaker must have seen what happened that night, and either told Doll or inserted it into their records….

i learned of Kevin Budden, who caught a deadly taipan by hand and hitchhiked to town still holding the snake. He lost his grip and was bitten, but bagged the snake and made the driver promise to get it to researchers. Kevin died the next day, but the snake was used to create the first taipan antivenom (x)
