Franco Scaglione, Alfa Romeo (B.A.T.) 5, 7 & 9 concept cars, 1953–1955. Via Sotheby’s
Ahead of their time on the aerodynamic front, the outrageous styling also made a splash on the auto show circuit. But underneath the skin, all were relatively traditional Alfa Romeos. Bertone used the platform of the 1900 small sport sedan, putting the emphasis on the sheetmetal—not the performance. Even so, the 5 and 7 were both capable of speeds well over 100 mph.

Legendary triptych: Alfa Romeo B.A.T. 5, 7, 9d to auction
It is almost paradoxical that, in the year in which bats are at the lowest of their popularity, a lot of noise is generated by the sale of three very famous Alfa Romeos (but not as famous as you might imagine) called BAT, an acronym in Italian for “Berlina Aerodinamica Tecnica” (Technical Aerodynamic Sedan).
Long story short: these three cars, built in different years, constitute a study by…

1954 Alfa Romeo Bertone B.A.T. 7 by David G. Schultz
Via Flickr:
The Alfa Romeo BAT "Berlinetta Aerodinamica Tecnica" is an Italian concept car. The car originated in a joint collaboration project between Alfa Romeo and the Italian design house Bertone that began in 1953. The design that Bertone came up with was for an extremely light car (1,100 kg (2,400 lb)), the ultimate in streamlining, with side windows at a 45 degree angle with respect to the body of the car and a large windscreen which blends in perfectly with the almost flat roof.

Monterey, CA - the #giulia #sprintspeciale from #alfaromeo . Made from 1959 to 1966, it was designed by the mercurial Franco Scaglione for coachbuilder Bertone, and offers eccentric flair. If the #SS bears more than a slight resemblance to the outrageous #Alfa Romeo B.A.T 5, 7 and 9 concept cars, it’s because their #designer was also #Scaglione, who was employed by #Bertone at the time. By 1963, he’d created designs like the Lamborghini 350 GTV, the first car (a unique prototype) to wear the badge of the bull. Its design—like the designer—was too radical for the client, and the subsequent production Lamborghini 350 GT wore a body by #CarrozzeriaTouring. #bnw #classiccarsdaily #getoutanddrive #classiccarspotting #retrocar #schudecar #vintagemotors #instacar #asundaycarpic #automugshots #carspotter #drivetastefully #SaveTheManuals #wickedwheels #carporn #auto #automotive #cargram #carstagram #carspotting #carsofinstagram (at Monterey, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CS8a_viPodt/?utm_medium=tumblr
