Día 29: Archangel

Para este dibujo quise darles unos diseños a los tres arcángeles más conocidos. Está San Miguel, San Gabriel y San Rafael; la idea principal fue ¿Cómo podría representarlos de forma sencilla? Y pensado un par de ideas surgió el dibujo final.

Hay algunos detalles que me gustan mucho, como que de los tres, Gabriel es el único con un rostro identificable o también el equilibro de las zonas más oscuras. Puede que no sean interpretaciones tan "épicas" o impresionantes, pero yo digo que son bastante adecuadas

Currently been reading Angels Before Man by Rafael Nicolás @nicosraf

What I find to be perhaps the most breathtaking aspect of the novel, thus far, is the tension imbued in the audience whenever God is present within a scene.

My fascination with Christianity began as a result of my Catholic education, in my critical consideration of the teachings presented to us students. A concept I find most interesting is the duality in God as a figure, being both benevolent and kind, yet being a jealous God. The idea that Christian's should 'fear God', yet revere Him for His omnibenevolence and power over creation, establishes a very intricate perception of God.

The juxtaposition of God's character is so well executed in Angels Before Man that it leaves me utterly breathless. As a reader I find myself struggling with my thoughts towards this God; despite being a witness to His manipulation, I find myself distracted by His 'love and care for His angels' and endeared by His 'Fatherly bond' with Lucifer. The overwhelming sense of reverence within Lucifer seems to overcome me the same way, as I wish dearly that he receives God's validation and praise. Yet, simultaneously, as someone aware of Lucifer's story I feel a sense of helplessness and despair at the unfolding tragedy - in which God is cruel and merciless.

In the case of this God love and fear are not mutually exclusive, appearing complementary to one another. In loving God the angels fear Him, and through fear of God they experience love.

"You have my mercy." But the Father didn't tell him to stand. "And you have my love, Lucifer."

...

"All that I say comes from a place of love." 'Is love meant to pierce?" (Pg. 126)

Perhaps my favourite quote to represent this dual nature of God can be found in Proverbs:

Proverbs 28:14

Blessed is the one who fears the Lord always, but whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity.

It suggests that in fearing God mankind will receive His blessings, and thus show their adoration and love for Him; warning, however, that a lack of fear will lead to destruction. A quote wonderfully reflective of the development of Lucifer's character, which makes God all the more powerful of a presence in the story. To see that Lucifer's change of focus to Michael as opposed to His previous worship of God is progressing into his downfall cements this fear, the omnipotence God possesses.

As I am still not finished and continuing through the second part I'm going to refrain from discussing more until I finish - which is very hard when Christian mythology and Biblical lore is my special interest *sobs*.

Alec was on his feet now. His seraph blade was in his hand. He shot a look of contempt at Sammael. “Michael,” he said, and as the sword blazed up with holy name, Sammael visibly inched at the sound of the archangel’s name. Magnus felt a wave of pride. Not everyone could diss a Prince of Hell so artfully.

Michael is the name of the Archangel who defeated Sammael and it is also the middle name of Alec's son. Maxwell Michael Lightwood-Bane.

I just think how Alec when in battle can use both his son's names and lit up the seraph blade. Rafael. Michael. Alec loves both his children to infinity and I am so sure of that.

It's so beautiful to know the fact that Alec thinks of his family and heads into a battle.

And, the way Magnus is proud of Alec makes this moment even better. Also, props to Alec's sassiness.

now, in our version of them, ''archangel'' is merely a title given to them as something to refer them in full title along with their name, kind of like the knighting thing or royalty,

[although, archangel species do still exist]

which fits, because, here they are, being born directly from gods blood, in that way, they basically are his actual kids and not just his creations, so that's what kind of separate them from other angels.

SO- they're kind of a BIG DEAL-

However, they also sort of parallel the overlords/ and the 7 sins, ruling over heaven but in more in the lines of they maintain heaven while they still have responsibilities relating to earth.

they also, sort of stand is as the faces of heaven, aside from royalty they're also kind of celebraties too.

an example being; Uriel, Gabriel, Jophiel parelling the Vs, but instead of leaching off of others, they make sure to keep heaven happy and entertained. individually though like gabe he still does have responsibilites over earth like i mentioned before.

when they were younger they used to live in one big mansion, but after everything and well couple of millennia, they now live separately, occasionally visiting their old home for meetings and that said old home is used as a museum/tourist attraction of sorts.

Let's talk about him.

I am downright CONFIDENT that Crowley was the angel Ariel. Here's the similarities.

-Redhead

-Loves plants and animals

-Various gender presentations

-Ariel is a Virtue. Crowley had access to the Gabe Files meaning that he could not have been at the level of archangel. Rafael/Raphael, as who many people theorized Crowley to be, would not have been able to access the Gabe files. However a Virtue would have. Often times Ariel is called an archangel because they are a representation of the Virtue choir. If Crowley is Ariel it would make sense for him to be familiar with the ins and outs of the other archangels.

-Crowley must have been a virtue by definition. He did the whole galaxy thing.

-Crowley could have certainly known about the garden from his time as Ariel. After all Ariel is the angel of nature.

-Ariel is associated with the symbol of a globe. Crowley only kept things of importance to him in his flat. He had his books on astronomy and this globe. Both of those things point to him being Ariel.

-Crowley's chair has lion armrests.

Ariel is the "the lioness of God". Little things like that have meaning, as hinted by the gold snake tempting Eve in the bottom right corner.

So I am pretty sure at this point that Crowley is Ariel. I've believed it since season one and I still believe it now.

NO BUT BECAUSE

Yes, Aziraphale is in love with Crowley; has been for a while, even if he only noticed it in 1941

"Little demonic miracle of my own. Lift home?"

But the POINT IS: even though Azi loves Crowley for who he is; the angel has always had, since the very beginning, an ideal. Of everything!

(I'm using the book as my main reference; and also to illustrate my point, as we know it is much clearer to see how much of an old married couple they are in the book than the show.)

Azi has been conditioned since the very beginning (THANKS RELIGIOUS TRAUMA) about the blasted ineffable plan. You can see it ever since the Wall of Eden. He has this perfect idea in his head of how everything is supposed to go/end up. Yes, he learns slightly over time to just roll with some things. You can't hang around Crowley that long without doing so.

But this all rolls around to Aziraphale's offer.

He has finally found a way to get everything he wants. A perfect heaven and a perfect Crowley.

He thinks having Rafael back will solve everything, because you can't be head archangel and commit the sin of loving a demon, right? So making Crowley an angel seems his wonderful solution. But he doesn't realize how screwed over everything really is. He doesn't realize that at this point it's impossible to get the perfect, functioning heaven he wants. Crowley knows this all already. He realizes how unrecoverable it all is, and he just wants to get away. He doesn't care about being an angel or a demon, he justs want to be the purest him he can, the him he thought Azi loved unconditionally.

But apparently not unconditionally enough.

Further AngelCrowley speculation from ep 1 & 2:

I was reading through the fabulous @azirafuck spoilers master post, and in the pretty descriptive write up for episode one I noted something no one else seems to have pointed out:

When the archangels come to the book shop to see what was up with the miracle that Crowley and Aziraphale performed together to hide Gabriel, Uriel clearly states that the miracle was extremely powerful (they even throw around some meaningless unit of measure like 25 GIGGAWATTS) and to my memory, which is not perfect... Uriel states only an archangel could perform it, and that Aziraphale is not powerful enough.

Aziraphale then makes the lie about making Nina and Maggie fall in love which from previous dialogue in the episode, it sounded like that’s a very difficult miracle to perform. EDIT: why this convinces the angels....i dont know.

So this leaves in my mind three possibilities

1. The miracle was so powerful because an angel and a demon were performing it together, which creates a power like that of an archangel that could be important for the plot moving forward

2. Gabriel unwittingly was assisting in the power of the miracle being performed on him.

3. Or heavily implying, Crowley was an archangel, and still has that kind of level of power when performing the miracle… pair this with the fact he doesn’t give his name in scene one as I’ve said in my previous post and it’s very suspicious

We all know that Neil is well aware of the Rafael theory. This could be him playing with us or he could be a master tease and was lying about it, not being true

I myself, never believed Crowley was a special Angel, an archangel Raphael, and even I in episode 1 was feeling the script was heavily pointing towards it

I don't care abt Crowley's angel name and I don't think it's particularly relevant to anything I want out of s3 story-wise OR thematically BUT I have noticed the absence of the Archangel Rafael, who at least when I was growing up was a pretty big deal. But I don't know enough abt Christianity to know if this is an intentional part of the show or if Protestants just don't do Rafael

Raphael reminds me of that one picture where a person was in a crouching position with sharp teeth, getting bared. It's like a feral meme or something.

But yeah! Raphael is very restless and takes any chances to mess/execute serenity if they just let their guard down even for a brief moment, Whether they work together or not. Serenity would already get used to it before or while the current event is happening. Having their 'life' getting threatened on a daily basis, Serenity would treat their interaction with Raphael as a routine.

As for the Serenity, gaining an army of angels, that's probably not the case. While that, yes, serenity has a fair share of subordinates. They wouldn't be a female in here, at least not at all. Serenity's underlings include long-distance rangers and/or magic casters. angels under serenity's guidance were always reserved, serious and collective. Serenity always taught and reminded them that in the battle, they should know how to wield the swords properly and never act on their desire or be a reckless. Serenity's subordinates are one of the few angels that are well-trained and have a control on their self. They might be as fanatic as the rest, but they can cover it easily. Devils who encounter Serenity's underlings, occasionally wonder if the angels are once a devil that subjected to angelfication or they just blunt traitor.

Back to the female subordinates, gonna base this on old traditions; most female angels, if heavens ever had one, would be healer or a support. Heavens's principality deems and shows that female angels are far too weak or/and doesn't suit being in a battle with a bunch of males. If one does really persistent however, the best heavens could give them/her os being a healer or worse, a sacrifice if the celestial forces grows less.

But yeah. There's no feminism. No gender equality. No whatever the fuck we currently have in earth. I'm trying to fit in the canon concept of WHB Version of heaven. Which is; dark and fucked up.
