What is it?

Violate Consensus Reality, second full album from Belgian prog-metal outfit Psychonaut (no relation to the Double Fine video game).

Psychonaut is;

Thomas Michiels - Bass, Vocals

Stefan de Graef - Guitars, Vocals

Harm Peters - Drums

(also features Colin H Van Eeckhout from AMENRA and Stefanie Mannaerts from BRUTUS on the title track).

What is it like?

A 'psychonaut' is someone who uses altered states of consciousness to explore the human condition. Of course, historically, music is one of those things that has been used to elicit said altered states of consciousness... does that mean, if you listen to this album, you are a 'psychonaut' listening to 'Psychonaut'?

I can't say that this album answers deep questions like this, but it does cover philosophical and existential themes. I fell in love with Stefan de Graef's vocals after hearing him on Hippotraktor's first full album, Meridian, and he's a great contrast to the cleaner vocals of Thomas Michiels.

I feel there's a really deep thematic connection to stoner rock; some of the song structures seem similar, even if they are interpreted via post-metal sensibilities.

A lot of the lyrics focus on self realisation and self actualisation, the music is moody and swirling, with a lot of tone and shade; similar to bands like The Ocean, both in terms of the album as a whole and within the individual songs, as exemplified by the title track, Violate Consensus Reality.

LLUMEN - Force of Nurture

Polygon Heart from LLUMEN was quite the surprise for me. Been listening it quite a lot. So I decided LLUMEN's debut, The Memory Institute.

Quite the contract. The Memory Institute it harder and harsher sounding, with more typical lyrical content you would expect from a industrial act, like society is shit, fantasy. Polygon Heart is quite pleasant and softer, with lyrics about personal struggles on love and health. In a way typical lyrical content, but not really? Struggles with health is quite rare to hear.

The Memory Institute is more dance floor ready album, like this song Force of Nurture, which is the highlight for me. Overall I would say The Memory Institute is quite good album. You can sure hear the influences LLUMEN is inspired by and mixing the elements.

I wonder what direction LLUMEN's next album will take?

Wednesday, February 21: Thee Plague of Gentlemen, "Motown Misfortune"

One would be hard pressed to come up with a song title that sounded less doom than “Motown Misfortune”, but that is exactly what Belgium’s Thee Plague of Gentlemen their debut EP and opening track.  And to be sure, nothing about either the Celtic Frost-esque “oofh” that opened the track or the trudging that followed bore any relation or resemblance to Detroit’s finest: this was primordial ooze that, until the jarring tempo change around the 5:30 mark, lurched, growled and slobbered like some kind of drunken sloth.  One would imagine that was basically the entire point, and there was certainly something to be said for a slow and steady pounding into submission.  Whether this sound could be described as coming from a plague of gentlemen was another matter, but either way they captured the essence of sludge metal well.

These are my very first serious charcoal drawings as all of my other ones have been croquis. These two are of none other than my personal jesus- Jacques Brel. Most photos of him are in black and white so I adopted him as my muse.

I think the thing I messed up the most with the first one is that I didn't try the different intensities of my charcoal out before, so random places are way too dark and some are too light. I also fucked up the proportions because it didn't occur to me to change the aspect ratio. Definitely gonna redraw that one once I'm better because atm it looks unfinished, but in my mind it's already finished so i can't continue it.

For the 2nd one I wish I would've made the eyes darker, but it's not as bad as the first one I think. That one is also better because the reference image is simpler. I definitely forgot that I am not magically good at everything I do, so at first and bit of more than I could chew.

Holy shit do I love rambling.
