Finally, after all these years I finally have an infected miru from the Mata Nui Online cut scene.
So I've been playing with my new printer over the last week and this is my first finished product from it. The post processing looks great, and you can only really tell it's made by an FDM print if you get up close to it. The paint is the exact colors Lego used for the infected hau a gunmetal base with dark orange randomly splotched in to give it a rusty look.
This part of a much larger project where I am making printable version of all the original 2001 masks. To do this I am taking the models from the up coming fan game BIONICLE: Masks of Power and modifying their shape, size, and details to be as accurate as possible. I'm onto the final step which is increasing the models poly count and smoothing them out so that they print with nice and round without any polygons. This Should get us the best models of the original masks for 3d printing.

Current 3D printing project: what I owe my friend from... getting drunk a year ago during a D&D session and promising her this tower.
Tumblr media
I love the Fate's End towers. They don't require any supports, and they're so detailed and beautiful!! I only own the first round. I gotta buy the second.
I remember when I first saw the towers, 3D printers had JUST come out mere months before this. The Wizard tower was offered for free. I knew I'd never be able to afford a 3D printer, let alone make that tower, but I still downloaded the file under the hopes that, someday, little me would get a job. And someday, little me would save the thousands needed to buy a printer, or find means to make the tower at the high school printer. It was a dim hope, but a hope nonetheless...
Well. Almost 10 or so years passed. And man, did I save my ass off for it. But I bought the Anycubic Chiron on sale for a 10th of what printers less than half its size would have been all those years ago. It's the best large printer imo on the market, and being the gay I am, I printed out the Wizard tower in rainbow.
And there, I knew, my dream had come true. My life was fulfilled. The tower itself has proved nothing but a curse, giving me low rolls all the time during session, but I'll as the dice gods to fix that for me someday soon! It looks gorgeous otherwise, and is one of my favorite towers nonetheless. It's printed in rainbow PLA on an FDM printer.
Long story short, never give up on your dreams. With time and patience, everything can become a reality.
Look at this dice tower, and know: everything is gonna be ok.

My workplace is holding out on me. They have a huve, dual extruder FDM 3D printer holed up somewhere. It's maybe not as cool as the photopolymer stratasys model in the lab, but it's the type I'm the best at.
Low key jealous of whoever gets to operate that beast.

Welcome to the world of 3D printing! This guide will walk you through the essentials, from how it all started to the latest trends and tips for beginners.
Let's start with the basics. 3D printing originated in the 1980s and has since become more accessible and affordable. It's an additive manufacturing process that creates objects layer by layer from digital designs. You can print with various materials like plastics, metals, ceramics, and even chocolate!
Now, let's talk benefits. 3D printing offers rapid prototyping, customization, cost-effectiveness, and the ability to create complex designs. It's perfect for hobbyists, small businesses, and professionals alike.
When it comes to printers, there are a few types to consider. FDM printers are beginner-friendly and affordable, while SLA printers offer higher resolution prints. SLS printers are great for printing metal parts but come with a higher price tag.
Choosing your first printer depends on factors like print volume, resolution, and budget. Consider what you'll be printing and how often.
Materials play a crucial role in 3D printing. PLA, ABS, and PETG are common choices for FDM printers, each with its unique properties. SLA and SLS printers use resin and powders, respectively, for more specialized applications.
Next up, software. Tinkercad and SketchUp are beginner-friendly options, while Blender and SOLIDWORKS offer more advanced features. Find what works best for your skill level and project needs.
Slicing software is essential for preparing your model for printing. Programs like Ultimaker Cura and PrusaSlicer translate your design into printable instructions, ensuring optimal print quality.
Maintenance is key to keeping your printer in top condition. Clean the build plate, nozzle, and moving parts regularly to prevent clogs and ensure smooth operation.
Post-processing techniques like support removal, sanding, and painting can enhance the appearance of your prints. Experiment to find what works best for you!
Lastly, join the 3D printing community for tips, tricks, and inspiration. Platforms like Reddit and Facebook Groups are great places to connect with fellow enthusiasts.

How Do 3D Printers Work?
3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, has revolutionized the way we create physical objects. It enables the transformation of digital designs into tangible items, layer by layer. But how exactly do 3D printers work? In this 500-word exploration, we'll dive into the fascinating world of 3D printing and uncover the principles behind this groundbreaking technology.
If you are interested in learning 3D animation, there are many great courses available in Pune. These courses will teach you the skills you need to create stunning 3D animations that can be used for a variety of purposes. Take the opportunity to learn from the best 3D animation courses in Pune and start creating amazing content today!
1. Digital Design:
The 3D printing process starts with a digital 3D model. This model is created using computer-aided design (CAD) software or acquired from existing 3D files. The digital design serves as the blueprint for the physical object to be printed.
2. Slicing:
Once the digital design is ready, it undergoes a process called slicing. Slicing software divides the 3D model into thousands (or even millions) of thin horizontal layers, creating a digital representation of each layer. These layers are essential for the printer to understand how to build the object layer by layer.
3. Printing Materials:
3D printers use a wide range of materials, including plastics (such as PLA and ABS), metals, ceramics, and even organic materials like food and tissue. The choice of material depends on the specific requirements of the printed object, including its strength, durability, and appearance.
4. Printing Process:
The heart of 3D printing lies in the printer itself. There are various types of 3D printers, but the most common one is the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) printer. In FDM printing:
   - A spool of filament (typically plastic) is fed into the printer.
   - The filament is heated until it becomes molten.
   - The printer's nozzle moves along the X, Y, and Z axes according to the sliced digital design.
   - Layer by layer, the hot nozzle deposits the melted material onto a build platform or previous layers.
   - The material quickly cools and solidifies, bonding with the previous layer.
   - This process is repeated until the entire object is complete.
5. Support Structures:
Some 3D prints require support structures to prevent overhangs or complex shapes from collapsing during printing. These supports are often made of the same material as the object itself and are removed after printing.
6. Cooling and Solidification:
Cooling plays a vital role in 3D printing. Rapid cooling ensures that each layer solidifies properly and adheres to the previous one. Some printers have dedicated cooling systems to enhance the quality of the prints.
7. Finishing Touches:
Once the 3D printing process is complete, the object may require post-processing. This can include removing support structures, sanding, painting, or assembly, depending on the desired finish.
8. Quality Control:
Quality control is crucial in 3D printing. Operators must check for defects, layer misalignment, or any issues that may have occurred during printing. Calibration and maintenance of the printer are also essential to ensure accuracy and consistency.
9. Versatility:
One of the key advantages of 3D printing is its versatility. It can produce complex geometric shapes, customized products, prototypes, replacement parts, and even intricate medical implants. This technology is used across various industries, including aerospace, healthcare, automotive, and fashion.
10. Limitations:
While 3D printing has opened up new possibilities, it also has limitations. Printers can be slow, especially for large objects, and the quality of the final product may not always match traditional manufacturing methods. Additionally, some materials can be expensive, and there may be constraints on the size of objects that can be printed.
In conclusion, 3D printing is a transformative technology that operates on the principles of layer-by-layer additive manufacturing. It begins with a digital design, which is sliced into layers and then printed using a variety of materials. The versatility and potential applications of 3D printing continue to expand, making it a vital tool in the modern world of manufacturing, design, and innovation. As the technology evolves, we can expect even more exciting developments in the field of 3D printing.
