Campbell's background as a skills coach means she can work with players to improve various aspects of their game, such as skating. Bodie said Campbell took "a lot of pride" in spending significant time with players before and after practices on different areas they wanted to develop.
Bodie estimated that the demand for Campbell by the players was so great that she was likely overworked because she excelled at creating such a high level of respect and trust in just one season.
"Before practices, she'd have half-hour skill sessions that would have 90 percent participation," said Bodie, who played in more than 500 games between the AHL and NHL. "I was shocked because there's usually never that much participation for an optional skills practice."
[...]
Campbell said her ultimate hope is that while her being on the bench is different, there will come a time when seeing a woman on the bench of a men's hockey team becomes normalized. She said as the season went on, she didn't focus on being the only woman on an AHL bench but saw it more as the Firebirds having an assistant coach who happened to be a woman.
She also acknowledged how being in her position comes with pressure to perform because she knows there are other women with the same goals and aspirations as her.
"There are other people that perhaps from the outside are looking at it differently," Campbell said. "I feel and I take pride in knowing that if our team succeeds, if I can succeed, then others are going to have the doors held open for them and that's where we want the game to go."

A tentative deal has been reached between transit workers in the Comox Valley and Campbell River and their employer, potentially bringing an end to a month-long strike. Just over 70 workers employed by Pacific Western (PW) Transit on central Vancouver Island walked off the job on Dec. 15, calling for wage parity with transit workers in other parts of the province. PW Transit operates bus services in the region and is contracted by B.C. Transit, the provincial agency responsible for local transportation outside Metro Vancouver. In a short statement on Thursday, the employer said it had reached an agreement with Unifor Local 114's bargaining committee. "The date for ratification is still to be determined," the statement read. "If all goes well, details on when the public can expect transit services to resume will be announced next week."

I feel like we tend to focus on the negative side of hockey a lot (rightly so). But some good stuff has happened today:
Jessica Campbell named AC of Coachella Valley Firebirds. She is the first female to coach behind a bench in the AHL
Dr. Hayley Wickenheiser named AGM of the Toronto Maple Leafs. She is currently the 4th female AGM in the NHL (Émilie Castonguay, Cammi Granato and Meghan Hunter being the others)
Mike Grier named GM of the San Jose Sharks. He is the first Black GM in NHL history

But like any coach new to a team, Campbell also had to step in front of those players for the first time and sell her message. She saw it, Bylsma saw it, and so did the Coachella Valley dressing room. That confidence even extended to training camp last fall with Seattle.
“I got the sense of the respect that she had from the players she’d worked with in the past,” Bylsma said. “Their indication to me was the respect they had for her as a coach and what she’s trying to do, the message she’s trying to give them, and that was immediate from day one — even in training camp with the NHL team.
“She has the respect from the players because she has knowledge and ability to offer them. And that was evident really before she opened her mouth.”
[...]
Campbell has worked to let her knowledge and skill speak for her. By the time she was 30, after all, she had started her own business and been hired by an NHL organization, among many other accomplishments.
“I think with any team, with any new job, respect is always earned,” Campbell stressed. “It’s never given — at least that’s what I’ve always felt and expected of myself. But for me, my confidence in my ability as a coach came from setting off on my own to start my own business and working with pros on my own. I had to figure that out, what separated me. And my passion comes through, and my speaking, my presenting for the game, for the guys and their development.
“Passion usually speaks loudest, and I love what I do.”
