What I guess I am "in over my head" about with regards to getting a half-working breed is the difficulty she has settling. And I don't mean the standard puppy difficulty settling, it's definitely more than that. All of our problems are related to Topaz being a stress up/busy bee/can't settle/can't sleep type of dog. I guess I knew about this in abstract, but it's another thing when you live it.

I adore how playful, motivated and smart Topaz is. She catches on to skills quickly, she can switch between food and toys no problem, and she doesn't have a problem with engagement (so far). But she struggles with settling when I am around. When I'm not around, she is fine, but I think because I'm attached conceptually to activity, she expects things to always be happening and if they aren't that's when she turns to destructive and overaroused behaviours.

I will say, this is a relatively recent thing. For the first few months she settled in an expected puppy way, with moderate levels of fussy-ness. It's only been the last few weeks that these problems have been completely magnified for some reason. I'm not sure if it's her moving into adolescence, or if there was some instigating thing, or if there's been a slow build up of stress.

With the very kind and compassionate help from @herdybunch I've got a plan in place to see if we can bring her back to a baseline. I've stopped taking her out for walks because they only seemed to add to her stress. I'm focusing on training, enrichment and play plus a couple other adjustments.

I have intense shame and anxiety about all of this right now, but I figure if anyone else is struggling in this way then at least you'll know you are not alone. I don't intend to give up, but I especially struggle in the middle of the night when Topaz is screaming and the anxiety is physically and emotionally crippling as I worry about noise complaints, neighbour relations, stress on all the dogs, my own interrupted sleep, and the terrifying idea that I am not the right person for this dog and this is not the right home for her. I am just trying to focus on the times that I've not just been woken up in the middle of a stress response (because I don't think that's a good indicator of what is real) and instead remember how good it feels when I am training and playing with Topaz, or how when she finally does settle she is a little cuddle bug.

This difficult time we are in right now does not have to be how it is forever.
