since i was a little girl, I believed everything happens for a reason.
no matter how hard i search, there was no reason for this.
i remember that day like no other. i sat in the living room of my hoboken apartment, which i shared with my older brother, of course.
today my anxiety had been like no other. with ryan at hockey practice, i feared something happened to him. i texted him an upwards of 30 times, to be graced with a response of “dw cupcake i’m doing fine :)”
however, that did not calm my rambunctious mind. so i turned to my music. i’ve been writing music since i was in high school, not for the people, just for me. music was my escape, an outlet for me to express my emotions.
i don’t remember much from those few hours, the only thing i remember was my raw and bleeding fingertips after playing for so long.
it was about 3 o’clock when the front door opened. “i’m home cupcake!” ryan called, though it wasn’t his usual tone. it seemed gloomy and sad.
my brother seemed to drag himself into our shared living room, shoulders hunched, a solemn look on his face.
“how was practice?” i ask cheerfully, trying to lighten his mood. “i’m so sorry darcie” ryan croaks out, tears pooling in his eyes.
“for what ry? what’s the matter?” i ask, cupping his face and wiping the few tears that had fallen.
“they’re trading me.”
his words cut me like a freshly sharpened knife. he opens his mouth to speak once again and i brace for the impact.
“to pittsburgh”
the knife was twisted. for the past two years, i was blessed to call the garden state my home, and blessed to call the devils my family.
i was struggling with my schooling a lot a few years ago, trying to cope with the loss of my brother at home. so my parents thought it would be a good idea to send me to live with him.
so to new jersey he went, with me in toe.
i’ve made great friends while being here, johnny, dawson, nico, jesper, timo, they were all such great company.
but no one’s company could compare to that of the devils prodigy, jack hughes.
being very close in age, we became best friends immediately. we spent almost every day together except when he had morning skate or roadies.
jack was my person. at first i thought it was just platonically, but after a few months of our friendship, i developed feelings.
and after a hard loss, denying them a spot in the 2022 stanley cup playoffs, i discovered he reciprocated those same feelings.
so we started dating in secret. it wasn’t easy, but we made it work. and about 6 months in, we told our siblings.
luke was accidentally first to know, after an awkward walk in that lacked clothes. quinn followed soon after, because jack felt guilty that the younger hughes knew but not the older hughes.
ryan was the last to know. it took a while for him to warm up to our relationship, but he eventually came around. plus, the boys became even closer than they already were. everything was perfect, until it wasn’t.
“so what does this mean” i ask, looking down at the dried blood on my fingers, my voice cracking as i try to conceal my true feelings.
“we have to leave jersey. and move to pittsburgh” he said, clearly just upset as i was. “trust me darcie i don’t want to leave” he sighs
“so don’t!” i exclaim jumping up from my place on the couch. ryan looks up at me with tears in his eyes. “darcie you know it’s not possible. if it was i wouldn’t be leaving”
“but ryan my whole life is here” i cry “my friends are here, my job is here, for fucks sake my boyfriend is here!” tears begin to stream down my face. “i cant just uproot my life because you got traded!”
“darcie lynn graves you know we have no choice.” he says sternly. brushing his long hair out of his eyes. “better get packing” he says, looking around at the decor. “our flight leaves tomorrow night.” and with that, he walked through the apartment to his bedroom.
just as i’m about to pick up the phone and call jack, there’s a knock on the door. i look out the peephole to see non other than my boyfriend, with tear stained cheeks on the other side.
i immediately open the door to see jack still in his practice clothes. “nico was the first player to know. he told the rest of us and i came as soon as i could” his voice cracks.
i wrap my arms around his shoulders while his encircle my waist. “i don’t want you to leave me” he mumbles, placing his head in the crook of my neck. “i have no choice baby” i sigh “this is the absolute last thing i want to do”
“how long do i have?” he asks me, tears falling down his cheeks. “what?” i ask, caught off guard by the question. “until you have to leave. how long”
“my flight leaves tomorrow night” i brush the strands of his messy hair out of his face.
it looked as though that statement broke his heart. it’s scary, being young and in love, not knowing if this could possibly be the last time they ever meet face to face.
“then let’s make these next 24 hours, the best we possibly can” he says feigning confidence.
we did everything together for the next 24 hours, just as he had promised. we had the time of our lives. we went skating together, a late night 7/11 run, movies, the whole nines.
all knowing it could possibly be the last time.
then came the part i dreaded the most, leaving. ryan insisted on taking my ginormous suitcase, as jack and i walked through the airport hand in hand.
we stopped before we got to tsa. i bit my bottom lip, knowing this is what had to happen. knowing that i was leaving and he wasn’t coming with me.
jack turns to me with a sad smile on his face. “i’m gonna miss you so much baby” he says, trying to hold back tears as well.
“i’m gonna miss you too jacky” i said, my tears finally falling. he wipes them away, the sad smile remaining on his face. “i love you to the moon and saturn” he says cupping my face in his hands.
“i love you forever and always” i smile “no matter how far away i am” jack dips his head down placing a passionate and loving kiss on my lips. “dars let’s go!” ryan calls out.
“promise me you’ll call me if you need anything ok?” a big goofy smile appears on the brunette boys face. “only if you promise me the same” we laugh and share our last goodbyes as ryan and i headed towards tsa.
present time
i left jersey almost seven months ago now, but i miss jack like crazy. being without him has been really tough for me, and everyone can tell. however, i was able to spend a few weeks with him over the summer at his lake house. i met trevor, alex, cole, and ellen and jim officially, and i loved every second of it
believe it or not i’ve made some great friends in pittsburgh. if you told twelve year old me that i was friends with sidney crosby she would laugh at you and tell you you’re crazy.
“whatcha doing kid?” sid asks as he sits next to me on the couch. ryan had invited the guys and their partners to our house for a team get together. he says it’s to “celebrate the start of the new season” but i think it’s to get on their good sides.
i point to the large flat screen tv currently playing the devils game against the st. louis blues. “ohh i see” sidney chuckles “ditching the boys to watch the boyfriend”
i laugh “don’t get too pissy sid” “no no i see where i lie on your rankings of favorites” he jokes, taking a sip of his beer.
“jack hughes goes down and he’s hurt!” the broadcaster says. sid and i freeze.
“no no no”
“cmon kid get up”
“god jack get up!”
“cmon kid cmon!”
we begin to panic, yelling everything we can at the tv, as though it could be heard all the way in st. louis.
i try to hold back my tears, as i pick up my phone. as my shaky hands attempted to open my phone, jacks contact photo appears.
i look to the tv to see he’s already in the locker room. “hello?” i ask, voice shaky and palms sweaty. “hello is this darcie graves?” the man asks, clearly not jack.
“yes how can i help you?” i ask “im michael coyne, the head physical therapist for the new jersey devils. now, i’m not sure if your aware but jack sustained a significant injury to his shoulder tonight, and he keeps asking for you. and if possible we would fly you into jersey and we can meet you there. now he has informed us of your current situation, we will cover all fees needed, we just want to make sure he is ok.”
“absolutely, um- i- yeah i’ll- i’ll go” i stutter. “perfect. the flight leaves in an hour, is that alright?” he asks. “yeah that’s perfect” i sadly smile.
“any questions?” he asks sincerely. “yes there is. can i talk to jack?” micheal almost cuts me off, “absolutely here he is now”
“hello?” i hear my boyfriend hiss in pain. “hi jacky. i’m coming ok? they’re flying you home and i’ll meet you there. it takes to hours to get there babe, but i’ll make it to the airport in about an hour or so” i ramble.
“ok.” he hisses again “i never expected you to come back” he says. i can tell he’s frustrated by the situation, he hates being away from hockey.
“i’ll come back if you just call” i say sweetly “now i have to get packing and head down to the airport. i’ll call you as soon as i can alright?” i begin to throw my clothes into my suitcase.
“ok i love you”
“i love you more jack, i’ll be there soon.”
3.5 hours later
i landed in newark just before jack and the trainers did. although it was around 10 pm the city was still alive. so to take my mind off of the stress, i walked to the prudential center. once i arrived the trainers were already there and assessing jack.
as soon as i walked through the doors i was met by devils personnel, who ushered me into the training room.
it was there that i saw jack sitting near a pt table with ice wrapped around his shoulder.
“you gave me the worst scare of my life” i said making my presence known to the older boy. “oh thank god your here” jack goes to get up “god fucking damn it” he hisses, sitting back in the chair.
i run to his side “can i get you anything? water, ice, a heating pad? i can order chipotle if you want? have you eaten? oh god your probably starving” i ramble.
“hey, i’m alright darcie. i’m not going anywhere” he says cupping my jaw with his healthy hand. “but what if you weren’t? something serious could have happened, you could’ve gotten a concussion, snapped your neck, jack rowden you could’ve died!”
he doesn’t respond, only chuckling under his breath at my rambling. “stop looking at me like that! it’s not funny! this is serious!” i giggle, trying my best to stay mad at him. i failed miserably.
“come sit” jack says, patting the seat next to him. as i sit down he places his good arm around my shoulders, carefully pulling me into his chest. “thank you for being here. it means a lot to me” jack says, placing a kiss on my temple.
“i’ll always be here for you baby” i smile up at him. he leans down and places a slow and sweet kiss on my lips.
i plan to stay in newark for the next few weeks, since luke and jack have an extra room in their house. “are you gonna play doctor?” jack asks as i help him into the car. “i guess so yeah” i giggle.
“can you wear one of those sexy nurse costumes?”
“jack rowden hughes!”

Tumblr media
The sun was shining down on you as you were planting some things in the backyard house in Laurel Canyon, the garden was almost perfect, you wanted to make the house cozy for all of you so you took your free time to organize things around.
You had moved along with your group of best friends to pursue a design career in LA, Camila encouraged you a lot in making this decision and now that you were finally there you wanted to make it better for everyone. The boys weren't the most organized people in the world, and when you heard that they had asked Karen to join the band and that she was going to move there, you decided to make the house as pleasant as possible.
After planting and organizing what you had planned, you shake your hands to clean up the mess.Taking a step back to see how it all turned out, however as you walked backwards you didn't notice what was behind you stumbling badly to the ground. As you fall, you bump into one of the gardening tools that cut your thigh deeply.
You moan in pain, bringing your hands to the bloodied wound. The pain was intense; you've never felt anything like it. After a few minutes of staying with your hand on the wound, you take your gaze to the tool that had cut you, it looked old and rusty, worried you try to get up and even in pain you go towards the hose to wash the wound.
After washing you noticed that it was really deep, and it didn't seem to stop the bleeding. You look for a first-aid kit and after some effort you find it, taking the plasters to make a kind of amateur bandage, there was no one at home to help you and you soon thought it best not to worry your friends, much less Eddie after all he was going to despair and you didn't want to see him more worried.
You did your best to finish what you wanted to do with the house, at the end of the day when it was time for the band to come back you sat on the couch waiting for them, ignoring the pain you felt.
"Hello there Y/N" Graham says entering the house, behind him a blonde woman you hadn't met before. "This is Karen, Karen this is Y/N our friend from Pittsburgh and Eddie's girlfriend."
The blonde smiles at you, as a way of greeting, you smile back at her moving a little on the sofa trying to contain your pained grimace.
"How was your day Y/N?" Warren asks, sitting down next to you.
"Calm I'd say, nothing much happened." You answer, smiling at the drummer.
"I missed you so much my love." Eddie walks over to you, kissing you.
He stops for a few seconds, watching your face carefully.
"Are you okay?" he asks worriedly, bringing his hand up to your thigh. You bite your lip, suppressing the groan of pain at the contact. "Baby, are you alright?"
"I'm totally fine, don't worry." You smile, getting up. "But now that you say it, I really feel tired... I think I'll lie down for a while."
"Okay, I'll be right there with you." He says smiling, not noticing that you could barely stand up because of the pain, and when you walked you limped.
"Actually I'd like to be alone, if you don't mind." You say quickly, turning to head towards your room. Making your boyfriend confused, thinking maybe he did something to make you look so weird with him.
"Ouch, hermano What did you do?" Warren says, nudging the bassist teasing him.
Eddie rolls his eyes heading towards the kitchen for something to eat, his thoughts still on you. Already in the room you were looking desperately for some painkillers, you couldn't take the pain anymore and when you took off your pants to look at the wound you got scared. Your thigh was completely bruised, everything around the cut was purple and just touching it a huge pain invaded your body.
You get in the shower washing the wound as much as you can but touching it was torture.
As you hadn't found the medicine, the pain was still there, and it prevented you from getting to sleep. You thought of some solution, one you could do on your own without worrying Eddie or anyone else.
"Y/N I came to give you back that shirt you lent me that day." Camila says, opening the door to your room, looking at you with the shirt in her hands. "Oh my goodness, what happened?"
"Nothing!" You say pulling the cover up over your thighs. "Why didn't you knock on the door before entering? I could be naked here!"
"I don't care, let me see what happened!" The brunette says approaching you, you gave up hiding anything and let her see what happened to you. "Y/N this looks really bad, how did you do this?"
"I fell, that's all!" You say. "I'm already better, you'll see."
"I don't believe in you, it's bleeding!" She exclaims, heading towards the bathroom in search of something to help you.
"Don't even try, I've already used everything I had there." Frustrated you say.
"Can you hold a little? I'll go after something in my room and Billy's." She says heading towards the door.
"Cami!" You get her attention. "Please don't tell Eddie, I don't want to make him worried."
"I don't think hiding it from him is a good idea." she says, looking worried. "He cares about you"
"I know, which is why I don't want him to know." You whisper, so no one but her hears it. "He's already so busy with band stuff, I don't want him to fill his head on me. Promise me you won't tell him."
"Okay, I promise... But I think you should tell him." She smiles, Cami had a gift for calming anyone down. "I'll be right back with medicine and some things to clean it up."
Cami came back with things that helped you a lot to get through the night. The next morning the pain was still there but it wasn't as intense, but you felt a fever, your body was clearly indicating that something was not right.
You had woken up earlier, and now you were in the kitchen making something for everyone to eat. Eddie walks over to you, wrapping his arms around your waist before planting a kiss on your cheek.
"Good morning sunshine." He says next to your ear, smiling to have you around. "Fuck baby, you're hot!"
"In front of everyone Eddie?" Warren says biting into a piece of bread he was eating. "Get a room!"
"I don't mean it like that, idiot!" He says, resting the palm of his hand on your forehead. "She has a fever, are you okay princess?"
"I'm fine, it must be your impression…your hands must be cold, that's all" you say, kissing the blonde with the intention of calming him down.
You can see Camila sitting next to Warren, giving you a negative look. Eddie hugs you, then sits at the table where he could eat and still keep his eyes on you. He looks you up and down, his eyes widening when he notices your bloodstained pants.
"Baby, you're bleeding!" He jumps to his feet, approaching you as quickly as possible.
"Don't be indelicate Eddie, she must be in those days." Warren says, like it was obvious.
"In the thigh?" Graham speaks into the room next to Karen.
Warren Rojas: Yeah... Smoking first thing in the morning wasn't one of my best choices.
"Take off your pants." Eddie says, nearly bursting with worry. Warren starts laughing at the situation when he sees you with a shocked expression on your face.
Eddie turns to the drummer with blood in his eyes, asking him to stop for a few seconds at least.
"Don't give me that look" Rojas says, shrugging. "You're the one who had a bad choice of words."
"Let's leave the two alone" Camila says, almost like an order to the chaotic group.
They all get up, moving to the TV room talking about the last song they had recorded.
"Are you going to tell me the truth or not?" Eddie says, crossing his arms looking at you.
You pull your boyfriend to a more private place where you show him your bruise.
"Fucking hell Y/N!" He was very worried before, and seeing your injury made him even more so. "Y/N, what is this?" He kneels down in front of you for a better look.
"It's nothing, I'm getting better…" You say trying to calm him down.
“Baby, this is infected,” he said, “We need to get you to a hospital.”
"No Eddie, I'm alright!" You say and he gets up looking very pissed.
"Walk then! Come on, walk towards me. I bet you can't even take a step" He says, you're embarrassed because you knew the pain would be intense if you did.
"Don't be like that" You say, feeling your cheeks heat up.
"I wouldn't be like that if you didn't fucking lie to me!" He looked more frustrated than angry, you didn't know what to say. "How could you let it get this bad?"
"I thought it would heal easily... And Cami helped me with a bandage last night." You start to say and he interrupts you.
"Cami knew about this?" Eddie takes his hands to his hair, trying to calm down. "This is infected, we need to get you to a hospital.”
"Baby, you have rehearsal today..." You start to say but he doesn't let you finish.
“I don’t wanna hear it,” He said, “We’re taking you to the hospital and that’s that. Stay here.”
He leaves you there, going to the living room after Warren.
"Give me the van's key!" He asks, extending his hand to the drummer, Rojas doesn't question as it was clear that his friend wasn't in the mood to talk.
Warren hands Eddie the keys, and he carries you to the back of the van where you could lie down. The pain in your leg was lighter due to the medicine you had taken but you knew that any rough movement after the medicine wore off would cause more pain.
The doctor warns you that you should have gone as soon as you got hurt, he said you needed some stitches to heal completely and that you're lucky you didn't get infected completely. He washes your wound the right way and after performing the stitches, you were at home, lying on Eddie's bed while he was stroking your hair.
"Are you still mad at me?" You whisper, keeping your eyes closed in fear of the answer.
Eddie settles down on the bed, cupping your face in his hands and then kissing you tenderly.
"I got so worried you can't do this to me ever again." Eddie says after the kiss "And besides, I can’t stay mad at you. I was just scared, that’s all."
"I just didn't want to worry you." You say, making him arch his eyebrows in disbelief. "I know I know, sounds stupid but you seemed so worried about band stuff that I didn't want to disturb your peace when you came home to rest."
"Baby can't you understand?" He says, stroking your cheeks. "You are my peace, and if you're not fine I can't be either!"
"I hate to bother you, you know that!" You say, still stirred by his words. "And I swear, I thought I would be fine."
“Sweets,” He scoffed, “I’m your partner! You’re supposed to bother me with this kind of stuff!”
You were indeed sorry, after having gone through all this you knew that it would for sure be much simpler if you had asked for his help from the beginning.
"Forgive me?" You say, kissing the blonde's neck. "What can I do for you to forgive me?" You whisper in the bassist's ear.
"Fuck, you'll be the death of me!"
....
Hi, I hope you enjoyed it... If you wanted to ask for something my requests are open, and if you want to ask and don't have any ideas check out my prompt list :) xoxo

Isabel Fattal: In your newsletter post, you wrote that anti-Semitism is not just a personal prejudice—it’s a conspiracy theory. Can you explain this concept?
Yair Rosenberg: When people think about anti-Semitism, they often think about it through the prism of other prejudices they encounter, which typically take the form of people saying, “I don’t like people like that.” “Like that” could be Jewish, Black, Muslim. And that is certainly a component of anti-Semitism, but it's not the only component. Anti-Semitism shares things with other prejudices, but it also has things that distinguish it from other prejudices. One of these distinctions is that anti-Semitism can take the form of a conspiracy theory about how the world works. It blames society’s problems on some sinister, string-pulling Jewish cabal behind the scenes.
This conspiracy theory is infinitely malleable. Whatever the problems you perceive in the world, you can blame them on the same invisible culprit. So you end up with people who have entirely opposite worldviews who somehow land on the Jews as their enemies. You can have an Islamic extremist who takes a synagogue hostage in Texas, and you can have a white supremacist who [allegedly] shoots up a synagogue in Pittsburgh because he sees the synagogue as facilitating the entry of Muslims into the United States as refugees. [Robert Bowers pleaded not guilty; his trial is set for April 2023.] These are people who have completely disparate ways of seeing the world, but somehow, they’ve ended up in the same place, because they’re both conspiracy theorists.
Isabel: You write that because anti-Jewish bigotry is a conspiracy, it becomes a “self-sustaining cycle.” How does that cycle work?
Yair: In Kanye West’s anti-Semitic tweets, he [implies] that he’s going to attack Jewish people, and his rationale is that they blackball and silence those who act against them. This is a very clever little paradox, because if you, as a Jewish person, then say, “I think this is anti-Semitic,” and as a result of that, Kanye or anyone else who voices anti-Semitic sentiments suffers any consequences at all, then the anti-Semite can turn around and say, “Ha, you see? That proves that the Jews do control the things I said they control. Because when I tried to say anything about it, people tried to shut me up.” It’s a self-fulfilling conspiracy theory that provides its own evidence and can never be falsified in the mind of the anti-Semite.
Isabel: Those are some of the strongest conspiracy theories in general, right? The ones that feed into their own evidence in that way.
Yair: Exactly. A big question about anti-Semitism has always been how it has managed to persist for so long. You would think that at a certain point, a lot of these crazy ideas about Jewish people would be exposed as untrue, and that would lead people to reject them. And of course, many people do. But when you have a conspiracy theory that feeds on itself, it’s a perpetual-motion machine that will continue to sustain itself for quite some time.
[...]
Isabel: We’re living in a moment where conspiracy theories abound on the American right. How does the conspiracy of anti-Semitism fit in with other conspiracies, such as QAnon?
Yair: The more conspiratorial discourse your society has, the more likely people will become anti-Semites. You might start out as a freelance, equal-opportunity conspiracy theorist, but you’re just one Google search away from somebody telling you that the people behind the problems that you perceive are Jewish people. And that’s why you see a phenomenon where QAnon becomes Jew-Anon. It’s how you see someone like Marjorie Taylor Greene, who is just your garden-variety conspiracy theorist, suddenly liking a tweet about how the Mossad, Israel’s security service, was behind the assassination of JFK.
And that’s why I think combatting conspiracy theories is a key component to combatting anti-Semitism. A lot of times, people parse anti-Semitism in political terms—left wing, right wing. But those are just ways people express their anti-Semitism. Fundamentally, anti-Semitism predates the Republican Party, the Democratic Party, communism, capitalism—all these categories that we use now. But the human propensity for conspiracy theories, for attributing simple, single explanations to complex phenomena, is old. And we’re all susceptible to it.

hi! puppy punk here, and i have some questions specifically about getting more into my local scene.
Im from NYC, and i have pretty limited social media (my main ones being instagram and tumblr), most of the punk shows in my area tend to be 21+ and i am but a wee minor. Any advice on how to get more into my local scene safely? i would rather avoid the shows (until im of legal age) instead of ending up in an unsafe situation
thank youu! :D
1. I recommend hopping on facebook to find places in your local scene! (I havnt but ive been told this is the way to go)
2. Some places have minor friendly venues if you can find them! (Ive been to one in Pittsburgh, no alcohol or anything like that allowed, but it was still loads of fun.) And then theres less risk of getting into a bad situation at a show. Check out flyers at local music shops
3. Check out libraries, gardening groups, and DIY groups. Chances are, you’ll find some hints of a punk scene at places like that. Make friends and ask around, learn some new skills while youre at it too!
Also also!! Anyone else from NYC, feel free to give anon some advice on where to start looking!

Bob Heis (1942-2012) was a military veteran, Elvis fan club administrator and part-time professional photographer who captured many great closeups of Elvis on stage in the 1970s, from around 40 concerts, including Madison Square Garden (above), Pittsburgh PA (New Year 76-77), and Elvis' final show in Indianapolis.

Bob Heis and Charlie Hodge (Credited to the Heis family at dignitymemorial.com)
He is immortalised on the 1972 As Recorded at Madison Square Garden album. Having sent a note backstage requesting Polk Salad Annie (which was probably on the setlist anyway), Elvis acknowledges him, "Okay, Bob!" at the beginning of the song.

For the ‘don’t’ prompt thing:
Doggett/Reyes and “You don’t care what they think.”
In my head, John is the one saying it to Monica, but I’m not married to that idea.
Thank you for the prompt!!
--
One of the things Monica has always appreciated about John Doggett is that she never has to guess his mood.
The emotional weather patterns of her family of origin can be generously described as tempestuous—ultimately loving, usually kind, but varied, rapidly shifting, and loud. Monica herself was always the even-keeled one, happily going about her life amid the rising and falling dramas of the people around her (and las telenovelas on TV), but growing up in a house without a single emotional filter means that she is most comfortable when the people around her say what they mean.
She makes exceptions for friends she cares about, of course, but it’s always like reading a foreign language. Nine times out of ten she gets it right when she guesses if Dana is actually fine or if she’s hanging on by the very last thread of her rope, but John’s complete inability to disguise his feelings is always a relief.
She’s also usually good at guessing why he’s in a mood, but as he tears down US 70 like the devil himself is chasing them across Pennsylvania, she’s coming up empty. It’s a nice spring day, there’s next to no traffic, and the coffee-and-muffin situation at the Pittsburgh field office was surprisingly good. The case they’re on is pretty grisly, as they often are when the X-Files office and violent crimes get summoned at the same time, but John has seen far worse.
And while he never likes her more metaphysical theories, it’s rare that one of them will set him off like this unless the case itself is somehow personal.
“We should stop by the game lands again,” she says, continuing the essentially one-way conversation she has been holding for the past half-hour. “I want to take a wider perimeter around the second crime scene to see if there are more burned-out trees with those markings.”
John grunts something that sounds affirmative.
“I know it’s not your first instinct to believe in forces like this, but you have to admit it’s an unusual pattern of—”
“It’s fine. I said we’re stopping.”
Well, given that those are the first six words he has strung together since leaving the city limits: “Not out loud, you didn’t.”
She says it teasingly, but she gets no reaction, positive or otherwise.
After another minute of watching him silently glare down the asphalt ahead of them, Monica goes for the direct route, “Well if it’s not about fire spirits, will you tell me why you’re so angry all of a sudden?”
“I’m not—” He cuts himself off, then looks at her like she’s being irrational.
She’s pretty immune to that look, so she just stares back, eyebrows up, waiting.
He says, “I don’t get that about you. Why aren’t you angry?”
The question seems to come out of the blue. It’s only ten-thirty a.m. and they spent the morning in the same task force stand-up, with no disturbing developments in the case—beyond the ones that were already there. She can’t think of what information he could have that she doesn’t. “Should I be?”
He shakes his head. He eases up on the gas, letting their rented Camry slow from reckless to just garden-variety illegal. “You really don’t care what anyone thinks of you, do you?”
Ohhhh. That.
It’s kind of sweet to learn that he was bothered by the collective snickering of the violent crimes agents when she laid out the reasoning for her elemental-spirit theory—and no, she doesn’t care what they think, because at the end of the day she will be right or she will be wrong, and only one agent in that room is coming home with her.
So to speak.
She offers, “I care what you think.”
For some reason that makes John’s frown deepen as he turns on the blinker and exits the interstate. She pulls out the map in case he asks for copilot guidance to the hunting reserve, but he seems to remember where he’s going without her directions.
A mile down the road, he says, “You know… I mean, you do know that when I tell you one of your theories is…” He trails off.
“… nuts?” she supplies the word the ASAC used this morning.
He grumbles in response, then says, “I don’t ever think you’re nuts.”
Oh, John. “Yes, you do.”
He glares at her, but most of his anger has burned off. “I’m trying to make a point here, okay?”
“Sorry.” She politely folds her hands on top of the map, and can’t help but grin. “Make your point.”
“I don’t always understand how you get from point A to point B, but you get there. The whole… fire spirits, and whatever, it’s a lot to take in, but I don’t like when they brush you off.”
It is sweet, and her heart squeezes a little in her chest, accompanied by that familiar feeling of gratitude that she not only gets to go on such an exciting journey with this X-Files assignment, but that she gets to do it with him.
Monica really doesn’t care what a random Pittsburgh ASAC thinks about her, as long as he lets her do her job, but still, “It’s good to know you’re on my side.”
“Always.” This time when John looks over at the passenger seat, his frown has been replaced with a warm little smile, the one that he has been giving her a lot more lately, the one that makes her feel like they’re heading toward something important. “We’re partners, right?”
They have been for almost a year. At a certain point, her heart should probably stop skipping when he says it out loud. “Even when you think I’m nuts?”
He rolls his eyes and turns back to the road, but he’s still smiling, and she’s willing to take that as his final answer.

Wightman Park
I live near Pittsburgh, but it's been a long time since I actually lived in the city or spent much time there. On Friday I arranged to meet a friend at a place but he ended up going to another place. It took a while for us to catch up with one another, and meet up at a place between our two locations.
Anyhow in the proces of waiting around in a city neighborhood I walked around the block. There was a park, that I didn't know existed that was bustling with activity..
Wightman Park was fairly recetly rennovated. Here's a good press story about that. It was mid-afternoon so kids were out of school. I was so impressedhow the park allowed kids freedom, but also seemed so safe with a mix of ages of children playing within eye-shot of adults.
The park in in a bowl, so where I was walking was along the sidewalk above it. I noticed how along the streets the stormwater was collected and in the center of the park ares was a rain garden.
Pittsburgh is a hilly place so rainwater run off is a big issue. Most urban streams were long ago covered in culverts. But in the same neighborhood as Wightman Park during the mid-2000s a truly remarkable stream restoration project was done . This short article in Atlas Obscura provides a short version, Nine Mile Run: This picturesque stream was up until recently the site of a ten story mountain of slag and sewage..  The organization that coordinated the project is UpstreamPGH which is involed in other progets in the city.
I was delighted to see how kids who go to their playground can see how their place is connected to water. Good things are possible.

considering eddie’s band is as big as it is and the fact he wrote a song abt chrissy and is dating steve so you think anyone from hawkins has put together that ed levy is eddie munson?
so in “all the missing girls”, i posited that they solve the vecna murders + hopper returning from the dead with a serial killer storyline, with eddie having been a witness/kidnap victim of the killer. in “remarkable”, i think a similar thing happens.
there are some changes for remarkable tho: eddie is very badly injured when he gets whisked away and is in a hospital for something like a month before he gets released, which is when he gets moved to the ‘burgh with wayne. the shady government folks covering up the lab bullshit put out a statement to the effect of the above (serial killer, eddie got kidnapped, hopper’s a hero who killed the serial killer, etc etc) — and the people in hawkins, used to a bunch of bullroar by now, grumble but accept it.
the shady government folks give eddie a new last name when they relocate, just because there are some people who still don’t quite believe it but also because it helps the cover story — he was a victim, there may have been a partner, all that crap. (jason def gets implicated as an accomplice but it’s one of those never proven things since he’s missing but presumed dead after ye old hawkins earthquake.)
when eddie starts getting truly famous (first grammy nom with METALHEAD), he usually implies that he’s from pittsburgh (though he never outright says it) and it’s genuinely several years into his career that anyone actually puts the dots together. also his government handlers (who naturally despair of him) are like okay let’s make sure we have a perfect cover story for when this ultimately blows up in our faces down the line. and by this time lucas has already told his parents eddie went into witsec so they just roll with that — they say he’s no longer in danger, he’s free to do whatever, go forth and make music. but like don’t totally out us on the news about the alternate dimension stuff, they say; eddie’s like “imma make a weird album about it and people will think i’m an artistic genius, don’t worry, no one thinks it’s real.”
meanwhile, “chrissy’s song” has the inadvertent consequence of buying him a ton of goodwill from chrissy’s high school best friends; he quietly reaches out to them in the early 90s and starts a scholarship in her name that helps lgbtqia identifying kids get out of bad situations. he prefers to be a silent partner in this, and, again, it’s not until later (i’m thinking around the “when suffering grows a garden” article — so fully 2001) that people actually realize that ed levy is eddie munson, the escaped last victim of the indiana reaper.
also while he does discuss steve in interviews, he typically doesn’t mention his last name; some people back in hawkins think it’s the harrington kid but steve’s private and so is eddie in a lot of respects — by the time they’re together they both don’t go out a lot and prefer to be homebodies. also steve changes his last name after he and eddie have officially been dating for two years, which throws people too.
(there’s a buzz feed unsolved about hawkins in the mid 10s; eddie gets interviewed and gives the performance of his LIFE convincing the world nothing weird at all was going on, it was just a serial killer. dustin has a fake emmy made for him; eddie keeps it above the toilet in the en suite bathroom of his and steve’s seattle summer house.)

Legacy (what is a legacy?) Part 4
It’s planting seeds in a garden you never get to see I wrote some notes at the beginning of a song someone will sing for me
Hamilton, the world was wide enough. LMM.
one, two, three
Summary: Mike is 13. Born May 2009. Sid didn’t know he had a son. All Mike had was hope and a prayer for his and his half-sister’s safety.
(Sid is a dad of a teen he didn’t know about AU) Sidgeno.
Warnings: (for the total story) post-child abuse (all off-screen but it affects things and is spoken about often), learning how to parent, panic attacks, anxiety, based on last season, OCs?, realization about sexuality. Post breakups. Desperate lack of in-depth research for CPS in both PA/CA, melodrama?, kidfic, angst, slowburn, playing fast and loose with the law for drama/storytelling purposes.
-
Taking the ice for practice the day after talking to Geno over lunch, Sid felt much more centered than he had the day before. He was ready for this season. He could face the public, his team, his enemies, other teams, the media, kids being adorable with the Little Penguins. No matter what happens, he was prepared for this season.
Talking with Geno always helped get him in the right mindset for a season. That had been true since the moment they met in Mario's home.
Geno was already in the locker room when sid got there, which would have been a surprise, but some fans had cornered Sid on the way in. While Sid had been stuck signing various hats, cards, and jerseys, Geno had blown past him in one of his super small, fast cars.
Geno shot him a confident smile when they stepped onto the ice, immediately grabbing the puck sid was going for and starting to play keep-away. Sid felt that grin to the bottom of his toes. They could do this. They could take on anything.
The practice is still open to the public. The Return-to-Normal season operations was a relief. It was weird during the pandemic not tohave fans in the stands for most of training camp. Sid had long learned to ignore the people in the stands, which made their absence even more glaring. As the team warmed up and got ready for whatever Sully would throw at them that day, Sid looked around the stands.
Having games and practices in arenas with no one to watch in person was even more bizarre than just practice rinks. It seemed like a punishment rather than protection. He understood, mostly - some of the Covid rules were just stupid, but Sid followed them as a good leader should.
He was glad that the pandemic was past the first few years. Sid kind of missed going out with the masks, though. It had been a long time (if ever) since he had been that incognito in Pittsburgh.
Sid pushed past the returned novelty of fans in the stands for training camp and focused on what Sully was saying. He could both be happy the fans were back and still frustrated that all he saw was families. Today was a good day to remind himself why he loved to play for people, even if they included people who got to live parts of life he never would.
The next time he looked up and focused on the people surrounding the ice, the practice was half over. He paused to lean on the boards near the benches and get water from a waiting Bio Steel bottle. Sid frowned at it for a second before he took a swig. He hated change, and this was a big one. Sid couldn't help his mental expression at the new branding could be summed up as ">:("
As Sid gazed out at the stands, he took note of the people who had come. Many reporters, obviously, a few families were watching the practice, and a few WAG hopefuls all styled up and attempting to catch the attention of the rookies without looking too desperate. Some of the rookies had parents in the stands. Sid nodded at the group.
It was a school day, so as Sid expected, there were fewer kids than yesterday. Sid put his water bottle down and reminded himself that he should give some of the younger ones a puck or two before he got off the ice at some point. He might be dying for kids now, and interacting with them hurt on some level, but he wouldn't ignore some hopeful young hockey fans. He took one long look around to take stock of the age group – that would determine if it was a puck or a stick he gave away – but Sid's eyes locked on the kid directly opposite the bench in the stands.
It was the same kid as yesterday, looking even more exhausted and rumpled and staring at him with familiar eyes framed with bruises. The kid was wearing the same clothing as the day before, and now that Sid was looking at him closely, there was a faded black eye and a cut on his face. The kid's wary expression let Sid doubt that the enforcer look was only because of hockey. At least not the U16 he was thinking about yesterday.
The boy looked even more tired than the day before, and the girl was running around playing with a worn stuffed unicorn, and Sid saw a small, purple child's size luggage sitting next to the overstuffed hockey bag. The boy wasn't wearing a jacket; his - or at least Sid assumed it was his – was wrapped around the girl as she moved along the benches of the stands, making her seem smaller than she probably was.
Something about them set off every bell in Sid's head. The teen tempted the girl into eating a pretzel from the snack counter and drinking from a blue shaker bottle with a Superman emblem and about a dozen stickers.
Sid kept an eye on them for the rest of the practice. It was the last rep he finally got close enough to take in all the details about the kids. What he saw nearly made Sid trip over his skates.
Littering the skin up and down the teen's uncovered arms were bruises in various stages of healing. Sid had spent too long in the hockey world not to know the timeline of most bruising like the back of his hand. Most of the bruises that decorated the kid's face looked at least a week to two weeks old but were deep.
There was bruising on the boy's face, and, when the oversized jacket sleeve slipped down, there was bruising along the girl's arms, and fading black eyes on both. Sid felt his stomach drop; The girl couldn't be over four years old. The teen was young too. Hell, Sid might be optimistic about calling the kid a teen. He didn't know.
One of the WBS defensemen stole the puck from him, and Sid jerked his attention back to the drill. He won the puck back and nearly scored. Jarry's creative swearing let Sid know the goalie was ready for the season.
The moment he could, Sid broke off and caught the attention of one of Tag's practice assistants and a trainer. The assistant is in school to be a counselor – a sports counselor but a counselor, nonetheless. The trainer was back up. Anthony and Charlie. At the moment, Sid did not remember which was which. All he could hear was the blood rushing in his ears as he realized what might be going on.
Sid had to do something. And this was the best idea he had on short notice.
The two walked away; Sid attempted to force his attention back to the practice entirely. He kneeled with the other guys at center ice and listened carefully to Sully's instructions. He did his best at the 'actual last, I promise; I'm planning on working you hard for the game tomorrow' drill.
Sid did his best not to look back at the bench where Anthony and Charlie were still talking to the kid and his sister during the rest of practice.
He wasn't successful by the side eyes most of the team gave him. They shuffled him along as they returned to the center ice to stretch and cool down. When the team let him settle down, Sid had a clear view of the conversation happening in the stands, even if he couldn't hear it. Rinks never had good acoustics for conversation - just the sound of pucks hitting boards and blades scraping on ice.
Sid looked around at his team, annoyed to be so blatantly caught. Geno smirked at him, delighting in his pout. "Why the ring around the Rosie?" Sid bit out, trying to keep his eyes away from the small group off the ice. He failed with a quick glance at the stands.
Rusty laughed a little under his breath. "Sid. You kept getting distracted." That got a lot of mummers of agreement from the guys.
"Yeah," Carts said from across the circle, "Dude, whatever you're planning on doing, I'm sure it will be accepted. You are Sidney Crosby." That got a roll of laughter from the team.
Sid didn't want to explain, at least not on the ice. "Fine, if that's what you think, Cartsy, you can lead the team in stretches." Sid put his captain's voice on to ensure the conversation ended.
Jeff grumbled jokingly but did as he was told, taking the cue from Sid to drop the topic.
For now.
Sid knew his team and was unsurprised when he was inundated with questions when they were off the ice and back in the practice rink's locker room. Their voices were a loud happy cacophony that Sid could bearly make out individual questions from.
"Sid, what's up?"
"Who's the kid, Sid?"
"Whatcha planning?"
"Ooo, are you going to steal some kids, cap?"
"Nah, he's going to make a kid's day, rookie!"
Sid watched his team gently chip him over his actions as he always did. Sid let the group go on for a while they all got changed and ready for the showers. The team video review wasn't until after lunch, and that wasn't for an hour.
Sully seemed pleased at how the team skated during practice, so he hadn't followed them into the locker room to finish getting his points across.
The team was feeling it, and Sid was happy just to let the atmosphere of the room wash over him. Geno draped himself over his shoulder despite his locker being across the room. He was mostly undressed from his kit and had a towel wrapped around his broad shoulders. Sid wanted to bite them like always, but the feeling wasn't new or uncommon around the rink, so Sid didn't think of it too much. He always felt like that around a good set of shoulders - jealously or envy, he had long attributed it to. "Now, Sidney Crosby, help all the kids. He does not just steal one." Geno crooned.
Tanger snorted disbelievingly as he passed toward the showers, and Dumo and Rusty gaffed as they trailed behind him.
"G." Jake said as he pulled off the last of his gear and walked away from his stall, "You know the WAGs have a standing suggestion to new parents to the team that if their kid goes missing, just call Sid first? That they are most likely with him?"
Sid shook Geno off in protest and glared at the room. He pulled off his jersey and gear, saying, "That was once! With Duper's kids! Twelve years ago!" Sid had a distinct impression that he squawked, but he refused to admit that in the room. To do so was to admit weakness and allow the sharks (Geno, Tanger, Rusty, Dumo, Jeff, Petey…. well, his whole damn team, now that Sid thought about it) to take advantage. While he was just one of the boys, the key was not to be too obvious.
Geno laughed as he walked away from Sid's stall and toward the showers. "Anna has that too!" he said, completely selling out Sid's occasional 'Can I borrow your son?' outings with Nikita. "He always brings back."
So sue Sid, they didn't happen often but often enough that Anna has called Sid before. Rarely…. But it has happened. Nikita was a delight.
The team laughed and didn't stop the chirping until most of them were well into the post-practice showers.
Sid glared at Geno, mostly jokingly, in a good mood after the worry Sid had carried all practice. But making Sid happy was Geno's goal as he grinned at Sid as they washed off. So, Sid did his best to plot instead of admitting how happy Geno's attention made him.
While Sid couldn't believe Geno would sell him out like that, he knew it was meant in a good place. So, Sid would have to do something to get Geno back appropriately. Nothing too bad, but something that let Geno know that it was not ok just to sell him out to the team like that.
From Geno's smirk in the showers, Geno could feel Sid's thought process. Which now made it a challenge for Sid to prank Geno. This was the game they had been playing for years, and Sid was looking forward to it.
Sid was grateful that the reporters wouldn't be allowed into the room post-practice for another week. That meant he could be there with the boys and their post-practice chirping.
When Sid finally got washed off and returned to his stall, the trainer's assistant and Jen entered the room.
Immediately the loud, boisterous chatter of the boys' post-practice died off as attention turned to the pair. When Jen came into the locker room - one of them had media, and they wouldn't be able to fight it. Her people only called her in when they needed the big guns.
"Sid," the trainer said in an odd tone; Anthony, Sid remembered, Tag's assistant was Charlie. That's right. "Can you come with us?"
Sid didn't even wait, "Is it about the kids?"
Anthony hesitated a weird expression on his face.
However, Jen didn't pause. "Yes. Can you come?" she said firmly. Her ability to hold an even expression is one of the reasons she was so damn good at her job, but around her eyes, there was a hint of disbelief and shock.
Sid didn't think most of the team could see that except him, Tanger, and Geno. The ones who had been with her the longest.
The sudden pit in his stomach was growing with each passing word. Something was up.
God, he hoped he wasn't right,
"Just let me get dressed," Sid said, rapidly reaching for his street clothes.
"Come on, G, you know you want to make a kid's day," Tanger called from across the room, sounding unaffected in a way that belied how his eyes were worried. He was mostly dressed and fixing his hair.
Geno laughed, nearly genuine – if someone hadn't been with the man damn near daily since they had been teenagers, like Sid, Tanger, or even Jen had been, "Yes. Make day; see me!"
That broke the team's silence. The rest of the team fell back into the regular routine of getting ready for lunch and video review; Sid sped through getting dressed. There was an odd atmosphere to the chirping and yelling. Everyone on the team saw something was up and followed Sid's leadership in acting normally.
Jen didn't protest, but Anthony looked like he might. Most of the team missed Jen's slight nod but not the core.
Sid was officially weirded out by this and had to know what was happening.
Tanger and Geno flanked him as they followed Jen and Anthony into a trainer's room just off the practice ice. Sid had been in the room several times; it wasn't the principal trainer's room in the practice rink – closer to the locker room – but it was smaller but fully stocked.
It usually wasn't occupied by two kids, and a woman Sid had never seen before but had a badge around her neck with Child Welfare Services written on it and her name directly underneath, Helena.
Sid opened his mouth to greet the kids in a standard meet and greet, but something stopped him. Maybe it was the boy's baby fat or the way he stood as he met Sid's gaze and steeled himself, but the kid looked just like Sid did in the photos and videos of interviews from when he was young.
Tanger and Geno filtered into the room as Sid stepped through. It was crowded in the small office now, but by the stern look the CWS rep gave him, something more important than fire codes or sitting places was up.
"Sid," Jen said, then paused, seemingly unable to find the words.
Charlie took over. "Sid, this is Michael Hernandez and his sister Marisol Hernandez-Diaz." He gestured to the boy and the little girl.
"Hello, Michael. Hi, Marisol." Sid said, finally putting on his 'meet and greet with kids' face. He likes kids, and it was close to the genuine smile any of his media smiles got.
Michael didn't respond beyond just staring at Sid, but that sometimes happens, so Sid chose not to worry too much.
His sister waved a hand excitedly in the air. "Hola!" she sang out, taking her attention away from her brother for a moment. There was a Spanish accent to her words. Whomever her parents were, they were teaching her to be bilingual.
Sid offered her a hand to shake. And she took with delight, her smile bright and wide.
"Mike! Water p'r favor." she asked when she looked away from Sid.
Her question shook Michael from his staring, “Claro, Mari, aquí está tu taza,” he said in Spanish. He held out the blue shaker bottle. Marisol took it carefully and didn't spill anything as she drank.
Sid didn't understand the words, but he did understand the motions. He watched them interact with a deep longing that he didn't expect. Sid pushed the smile on his face a little harder. He would not mess this up for the kids just because he wanted to be a father.
"Sid," Jen said again.
Sid turned, and Jen gestured to the chair next to her. "You might want to sit down for this."
Sid raised an eyebrow but made no move to the chair, choosing to remain standing. "What's up?" he wasn't injured. So why had she asked?
"Michael here," Jen said bluntly, "He thinks you are his biological father."
Sid hadn't fainted in years, not since the worst of the concussion, but he came damn close.
He stumbled and nearly collapsed into the chair that Jen pointed out.
Behind him, Tanger and Geno hurried forward to flank him in the chair. Geno put a hand on his solder to keep Sid from leaning too far forward.
Michael was watching him react. He was staring at Sid with an expression that Sid could read, mainly because it was a Forbes expression from the bones. Literally. He had Sid's cheek and pre-surgery jaw. Hope and fear. Like he didn't know how he would survive if he got what he wanted, good and bad.
The last time he had seen that expression, his sister had told him of the college she was going to for hockey. It came from his mother's side of the family.
And Michael looked just like him.
But also, Sid's eyes were staring back at him with that expression.
Oh.
Oh shit.

Bruins lose offensive arms race 6-5 against the Penguins
On Thursday night, the Bruins returned to the Garden for a two-game break between road trips, matching up first against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Their offense, led by Sidney Crosby, outmatched the Bruins in a high-scoring, high-energy game showcasing the importance of puck possession and face-off wins.
The first period opened with a goal from Brad Marchand only forty-two seconds into the game, sinking the puck off a rebound from Matt Grzelcyk’s shot attempt. Penguins winger O’Connor would score less than five minutes later with a second attempt shot of his own after getting on the inside of the Bruins defense, tying the game 1-1. Defenseman Graves would take the lead just 73 seconds later after his shot would plinko-bounce off both Coyle and Shattenkirk before it crossed the goal line. The Bruins would answer after a mere 22 seconds, as Pastrnak dangled and wrong-footed goalie Nedeljkovic, leaving the net open for an easy goal to tie the game at 2-2. It is here that the broadcast took its first commercial break. It’s not often you see four commercials before a commercial! When play returned, the Penguins didn’t hesitate to continue putting goals up with a set-play that spanned all 200 feet of ice. Letang sent a long pass from the Penguins defensive zone off their offensive boards, which Crosby recovered and passed to Guentzel for the third Pittsburgh goal in as many minutes. Shortly after, the Bruins would get a power play opportunity after Joseph’s stick found Geekie’s face, though the Bruins failed to capitalize. The power play looked sloppy and gave the Pens two separate rush attempts (one being a 2-on-0 rush), but neither rush resulted in a score either, and the penalty expired with an unchanged score. As the end of the first period approached, the Penguins managed one more goal for good measure, with Eller’s slapshot beating Swayman to the glove-side after a quick, cross-ice pass from O’Connor. At the end of the 1st, the score was 4-2 in favor of the Pens.
The second period started much less intensely as the first, with nearly five minutes of unremarkable play favoring Pittsburgh before Carlo was sent to the Bruins penalty box for cross checking. Just as the Bruins penalty expired, centerman Carter uses his positioning in front of the goalie to score a garbage-man cleanup goal off a loose puck off a rebound from Letang. While technically a full-strength goal, Carlo had not yet returned to play. It is nearly halfway through the period before the Bruins manage enough sustained offensive possession to even attempt a shot on Nedeljkovic, though the first attempt of the period finds the back of the net, courtesy of a top-shelf snipe from Geekie. This reduced the Penguins’ lead from three to two, and set the score at 5-3 in favor of Pittsburgh. The Bruins had an opportunity to close the lead again with another power play opportunity after Letang hooked Coyle on a scoring opportunity, though their power play unit continued to struggle with sustained offensive pressure, but they did manage a few (unsuccessful) attempts. The Bruins instead managed to find another goal in the final minute of the period as Letang screened his own goalie from seeing Carlo’s blue-line shot, which found the back of the net. After 2 periods, the score was 5-4, Bruins still trailing.
In the early minutes of the third period, McAvoy was sent to the box for a delay of game penalty for throwing the puck over the glass in a clearing attempt. To the luck (and hustle) of the Bruins, the only goal during McAvoy’s penalty was a short-handed goal from Marchand, who skated strongly around Letang’s defensive efforts before he found a gap in the goaltender on the top shelf, tying the game 5-5. Both teams' defenses manage to hold the other team from scoring until McAvoy gets sent to the box AGAIN for hooking with just under nine minutes left to play. It takes the Penguins’ power play unit less than ten seconds to score, regaining the lead with a score of 6-5. Despite some good attempts from the Bruins to score at full-strength, they pulled their goalie for the last two-and-a-half minutes of regulation. In this sequence, the Bruins win nearly a quarter of the faceoffs they won during the entire game, but fail to capitalize on their possession of the puck. The Penguins give them two final chances in the last eleven seconds, icing the puck twice and giving the Bruins two final faceoffs, neither of which can be turned into a goal, and the game ends with the Penguins ahead 6-5.
This game reflects the offensive strength of both teams, as a collective eleven goals is a lot to see in a game of hockey. Despite the low (and nearly identical at 0.828/0.829) save percentages from the two goalies, neither looked bad. Both teams created quality scoring opportunities that exploited their opponent’s defensive weaknesses. One major factor, as mentioned earlier, was faceoff wins. The Penguins are the top team in the NHL for faceoffs, winning 65% against the Bruins. Since the retirement of Bergeron and Krejci, the Bruins have dropped significantly in faceoff prowess, which has been impacting their late-game strategy, as goalie pulls in the final minutes are difficult to handle when there is no way to ensure possession in these high-stakes minutes. While it affects these moments the most, it impacts the Bruins at every level of their game, and will be an ongoing problem until the Boston centermen can correct this issue in practice. Until then, the Bruins will continue to struggle at the end of the game in 6-on-5 situations, regardless of which side they are on.
The Bruins play next on Saturday, January 6th at 7PM against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
BRUINS LINES (1/4/23)
Marchand - Coyle - DeBrusk Zacha - Geekie - Pastrnak van Riemsdyk - Frederic - Heinen Beecher - Merkulov - Steen

Geologists mapped how metal pollutants have traveled across the city
Pittsburgh’s steel industry may be largely in the past, but its legacy lives on in city soils. New research led by Pitt geologists shows how historical coking and smelting dropped toxic metals in Pittsburgh’s soil, particularly in the eastern half of the city.
“I don’t think people need to be scared, but I think they need to be aware,” said Alexandra Maxim (A&S ’19G), now a PhD student at Georgia Tech, who led the research as a Pitt master’s student. “Make sure you test your soil and be thoughtful about your gardening and your children playing in certain areas.”
While the most severe levels of soil lead come from concentrated sources, those aren’t the only factors that can make dirt harmful to garden or play in, especially in a city with industrial history like Pittsburgh.
“The gut reaction when you’re thinking about urban metals is to think it’s all gasoline lead or paint lead, and as long as you take care of those, you’re in good shape,” said coauthor Daniel Bain, an associate professor in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences. “But we don’t really have a good idea of other less common or more diffuse sources of lead.”
Understanding those other sources requires looking beyond houses and roads to areas with relatively undisturbed soil — and only recently have the tools for testing soil samples become common enough for researchers to branch out from the most concentrated and worrisome sources of pollution, Bain added.
With samples from 56 parks, cemeteries and other sites around the city collected by Carnegie Mellon University students and Jonathan Burgess from the Allegheny County Conservation District, the team was able to pinpoint some of those polluting factors. They recently published their results in the journal Environmental Research Communications.

Concentrations of soil metals were generally higher in the east end of the city, likely a result of wind patterns, and the city’s geography also plays a role, the team found. Levels were higher in the two large, flat valleys that crisscross Pittsburgh: the historical paths of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers.
These valleys still influence local weather patterns, serving as the site of temperature inversions that trap pollution close to the ground. Along with worsening air pollution, the team theorizes, inversions may have given heavy metals from historical industrial sites a chance to settle from the air into the soil.
“All the industrial activity was along the rivers, and if you think about the smoke and wind patterns, it makes sense that they would settle in these valleys,” said Maxim.
To pin the pollution to likely sources, the team measured the ratios of different pollutants, comparing them to the outputs of different industrial processes. For Maxim, that meant not just learning statistics and mapping techniques but sorting and cross-referencing historical sources to locate past coking plants and smelters. She also had to determine what metals they released into the air.
Even with that painstaking work, there was a limit to what the team could piece together. “We really had to dig, and I feel like I just scratched the surface of these records,” Maxim said. “It was a really fascinating experience — I felt like I knew Pittsburgh in a very intimate way as a result of this study.”
The team searched for several pollutants, including arsenic, cadmium, zinc and copper. While lead tends to dominate conversations about soil metals, others often fly under the radar — like cadmium, which can replace the calcium in bones and increase the chances of a fracture.
advertisement
“Cadmium is in coal, and it boils at about the same temperature that we would coke coal, something we have a long history of in Pittsburgh,” Bain explained. “So this is probably something we should probably be more concerned about.”
The concentrations the team discovered aren’t immediately alarming, Bain said — most fall well below the action levels that regulatory agencies use to determine whether a problem needs to be addressed. But those who garden or have young children may still want to get their soil checked. He pointed to resources offered by the Allegheny County Conservation District for those interested in learning about their soil.
Maxim offered another suggestion. She now lives in Atlanta and found her own backyard had high lead levels, a concern for her due to her 13-month-old child. She pointed to the hope offered by the burgeoning field of “phytoremediation”: using plants to lock up harmful pollutants.
“If you have high vegetation that kind of keeps the soil in place without letting it move, that helps,” she said. “Other vegetation like sunflowers can uptake metals. There are things we can do with our environment other than just lawns. We have avenues for keeping ourselves safe.”
And the team is doing further testing on the precise forms the pollutants in Pittsburgh take — whether they’re harmful to humans as is or locked in chemical compounds that keep them from making their way into the bodies of living creatures. While there’s more to learn, Bain said, it still doesn’t hurt to be safe.
“I don’t think we need to dig up the entire city and replace it with fresh soil,” said Bain. “But this sort of drives home the point that people should take advantage of the public health measures that are available.”

Ex Pilots are a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania band that's been around since 2015. "S/T" is their 2nd full LP and also their 2nd release on Oakland, California based label Smoking Room. This was mastered by Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden (Oakland, California). I mention this because I'm seeing Shirley's name pop up on more and more releases.
Ex Pilots have a sound reminiscent of Guided By Voices, My Bloody Valentine, and Lilys.

okay! good (late) morning! i got called in for emergency backup babysitting for some family friends this morning, but then they texted as i was leaving the house to say it’s definitely the flu and not food poisoning, so the whole family is quarantining. still, it got me up, showered, and ready for the day! i spent all of christmas day lounging around, first at my house and then at my sister’s place, so today i am feeling recharged and ready to power through a bunch of stuff on my december to-do list.
at-home tasks round 1 (COMPLETED):
pay tolls
buy pittsburgh flights!!! :)))
purchase SD info
submit online passport application
email DR about rec letter
email gym to set up first training class
out-and-about tasks:
i thought i had to drive 30 min away to gap to return a ton of items but then i realized that if i decided not to exchange one of them i could return all of them by mail... after spending like 48 hours trying to amp myself up for this annoying trip i am now experiencing the unbelievable euphoric rush of realizing i can just drive to the UPS store five min away instead. wow i feel like i’m HIGH. high on not having to do an annoying ERRAND
target returns (mirror, shams) and buy packing tape, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide
do home depot return (mirror) + buy seeds
pick up trial contacts at the mall
pack UPS returns (gap, nhl shop, haley’s return) (sadly they were closed and I was not able to drop them off)
at-home tasks round 2:
sweep off deck and measure for garden beds
begin working on garden plan & planting timeline
end-of-year journaling & goal-setting
do laundry if i feel so moved
comment on a fic (i’m trying to do one per day until new year’s)
walk the dogs for an hour
jes if you are feeling unbelievably powerful after completing all your annoying errands you could also complete the most annoying errand of all: calling the leasing company for the millionth time and actually waiting out the 25+ min hold time to get a copy of your title. this is no task for mere mortals to complete on their day off but if you have ascended to godhood you could give it a shot

Grave Creek Archaeological Complex, near Wheeling, centers on the largest known burial mounds of the Adena people, built about 250-150 BC. These mounds, as high as 62 feet and nearly 250 feet at the base, required moving more than 60,000 tons of earth, creating the largest conical type structure of any of the mound-building cultures. The Delf Norona Museum on the site displays some of the nearly 450,000 artifacts found in the multi-level burial site and elsewhere in the area.
