Ten EcoLit Titles from Around the World

Fiction with a mind on ecology and environmental themes are one of my favourites. Further topics from animal rights, energy sources, to disasters and dystopian society have only become more and more relevant. So, from across the six continents here are 10 EcoLit titles. (FYI, I try to provide content notes for all titles I review in the links.)

Children of the Sea by Igarashi Daisuke, translated by JN Productions, lettering Jose Macasocol

Adapted to an animated film in 2019, the award-winning five-volume-comic by Japanese artist Igarashi Daisuke, Children of the Sea is a bit of a mystery, with a somewhat nonlinear timeline. Further a gorgeous and mesmerizing tribute to the ocean and aquatic life as the ocean’s fish begin disappearing worldwide.

The Disaster Tourist by Yun Ko-eun, translated by Lizzie Buehler

This the first translated book by Korean author Yun Ko-eun is the sort of trim ecolit novel that begs the question of just how dark, dark tourism can get. Yona Ko works for Jungle which specializes in travel packages to disaster areas. If that sounds rather problematic it also has a corporate culture that’s unsurprisingly very much the kind with a missing stair. So, the ten-year company veteran ends up on a review trip to one of the least lucrative destinations in Southeast Asia. A tropical island that decades ago was the site of a genocide and giant sink hole, now a lake. Initially coming off more as a paradise, the island however is hiding an all too deadly side.

Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk, translated by Antonia Lloyd-Jones

From the Noble winning Polish author Olga Tokarczuk, this novel is ostensibly a murder mystery. However, page by page Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead examines climate change, predation, exploitation, diet, and belief. The reality that man is an animal whose attempts to forget or detach one’s relationship and own position in nature is lethal.

Eclipse Our Sins by Tlotlo Tsamaase

From Motswana author Tlotlo Tsamaase Eclipse Our Sins is an achingly lyrical novelette that appeared in SFF Clarkeswold Magazine, Issue 159 December 2019 (+ audio version). It presents an apocalyptic earth ravaged by climate change with a largely immoral mankind split in increasing class disparity. And abused Mama Earth is angry…

Fauna by Christiane Vadnais, translated by translated by Pablo Strauss

Speculative fiction holds real life hallmarks of dystopia and apocalypse in this debut work of fiction by Quebecois author Christiane Vadnais. Delivering thought-provoking expressions of 10 interconnected cli-fi vignettes with a real strain of horror, it sometimes comes off as more for shock value. Yet, Fauna is nevertheless a title which can stay with the reader.

Gwen in Green by Hugh Zachary

Gwen in Green is a story beget from the brutal transformation of 1,200 acres due to construction of the Brunswick Nuclear Plant in North Carolina during the early 1970s. This sexy eco-horror pulp by Hugh Zachary, revived in Paperbacks from Hell, personifies not just nature but a decade.

The Seeds written by Ann Nocenti and art by David Aja

Years in the making, this speculative eco-tech thriller comic by US journalist and writer Ann Nocenti with artist David Aja is an uncanny dystopian and, in many ways, strangely prescient book. There are aliens, misinformation, conspiracy theories and a toxic environment… Words don’t really do credit to the absolute eerie monochromatic colour scheme art either. One comic best to just dive into yourself. (BONUS: Ann Nocenti is also responsible for one of my favourite DC Comics illustrated by John Van Fleet, Poison Ivy: Cast Shadows.)

Solarpunk: Ecological and Fantastical Stories in a Sustainable World edited by Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro, translated by Fábio Fernandes

Solarpunk is a genre that has grown, especially over the last decade. From a country that does in the real world have a high majority percentage of its energy from renewable sources, it is valuable that this 2012 Brazilian anthology is available in translation to not be forgotten in the canon.

(BONUS: Looking for something more hopeful and soothing? I highly recommend the Hugo award winning, philosophical, solarpunk Monk & Robot novella duology by US author Becky Chambers)

The Story Collector by Evie Gaughan

A historical romance from an Irish author weaving local folklore, additionally this is a novel importantly about the human link to nature. How it helps people in some of the darkest times.The verdant wintry setting and time, as the light of the sun starts increasing, acts almost as a living character influencing its characters separated by 100 years, along with the consequences of man’s hubris and disrespect.

The Swan Book by Alexis Wright

Published almost ten years ago this post-apocalyptic novel from a notable Australian Indigenous author remains a vivid and powerful literary saga today. In a world devastated by climate change and subsequent governmental collapse, its Aboriginal main character Oblivia undergoing much suffering tries to achieve self-determination. Heavy, with an eye on history, full of dense metaphors, symbols including swans, and links with folklore, the text is well worth the effort and praise.

First thoughts

So, if I believe that manifesto Solarpunk may be seen as an other way for our future ; i.e an alternative to cyberpunk as it has already been said on this post. Of course I still need some documentation and of course to read the already existing short-stories such as Glass and Gardens : Solarpunk Summers from Sarena Ulibarri, Solarpunk, Ecological and Fantasticals stories in a Sustainable World from several brazilian authors such as Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro and Roberta SPindler or Hieroglyph from Ed Fynn and Kathryn Cramer.

ANYWAY I will try to write out some stuff. May it be relevant.

On storytelling

I still want to explore some ideas. I often read one thing that could be opposed to Solarpunk and this thing was a potential lack of conflict and therefore a difficulty to reach such thing as a climax.

On anticipation

Some talk about long-term forecasts. A world that would have had the time to build itself. I speak about centuries. Time spent to build big cathedrals. Now picture a sustainable cathedral - like an art nouveau stylised castle with vegetation, sustainable energy supply facilities...

And right now appears the probable necessity to gather proper documentation on energy. I also think about low-tech stuff. Have to keep that in mind. Where was I ? Ah, yes: anticipation.

A story that would take place in a far future would not be as striking as would be a near-future scenario. Something close to what we are now may be a good starting point.

On technology

I am still trying to find out a way to solve this problem : how could I talk about a made-up technology if research has not been there yet ? The first solution that comes to my mind would be to pick up the different obstacles to one given technology and then imagine a way to fix them, that way being necessarily NOT scientificly provable. My mind hates it. There is still the possibility to say something like "scientists overcame this issue and succeeded to create the [name]-thing". Turns out this post is a total mess. I should write one article / subject. [to be continued]

Nine sci-fi subgenres to help you understand the future

#5: Solarpunk

“What does ‘the good life’ look like in a steady-state, no-growth, totally sustainable society?”

According to “On The Need for New Futures,” a 2012 article on Solarpunk.net, that’s the question this movement—which melds speculative fiction, art, fashion and eco-activism—seeks to answer. In the same post, Solarpunk’s anonymous founders warn, “We are starved for visions of the future that will sustain us, and give us something to hope for.” Yet what if we dreamed differently? What if we tried to answer a separate question: What does a sustainable civilization look like, and how can we get there?

As Olivia Rosane puts it, what if we tried to “cancel the apocalypse?”

Solarpunk is the opposite of cyberpunk’s nihilism, offering stories, the founders say, about “ingenuity, positive creation, independence, and community.” These narratives are often framed around infrastructure as both a form of resistance and as the foundations for a new way of life—the eponymous solar panels feature heavily.

What to read

Kim Stanley Robinson, Mars trilogy (beginning with Red Mars,1992)

“I’ve always written utopian science fiction,” says Robinson. He’s one of the best world-builders in contemporary sci-fi, and these stories of terraforming Mars are super worked-through, both technically and sociopolitically. They describe a future in which humans just might be able to achieve ecosystem balance.

Cory Doctorow, Walkaway (2018)

This is far less utopian than Robinson’s work, but perhaps, quietly, just as hopeful. In a world wracked by climate change and fully captured by corporate power, most people live grinding lives of toil in “Default” cities. Yet 3-D printing has created post-scarcity, and so Doctorow’s trio of characters simply secede and walk away into the lands in between, and start to rebuild the world. “The point of Walkaway is the first days of a better nation,” one says.

Check out Sunvault: Stories of Solarpunk and Eco-Speculation (2017, eds. Phoebe Wagner and Brontë Christopher Wieland), the first English-language collection of solarpunk fiction . For stories from Brazil and Portugal, there’s Solarpunk: Ecological and Fantastical Stories in a Sustainable World (2014 / English 2018, ed. Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro).

11bet news: Tuyển Brazil loại ngôi sao không tiêm vaccine Covid-19

"Lodi mất cơ hội lên tuyển vì không tiêm vaccine", Marca dẫn lời HLV Tite. Thuyền trưởng Brazil nhận định việc triệu tập Lodi lên tuyển lúc này như "quả bom" cho công tác phòng chống dịch Covid-19 của Brazil.

Lodi là ngôi sao của Atletico Madrid. Gần đây, phong độ của Lodi không quá ấn tượng, do đó HLV Tite có thêm lý do để mạnh tay loại hậu vệ này. Ông triệu tập Alex Telles, hậu vệ của MU, lên trám chỗ Lodi ở tuyển Brazil.

Telles từng mất hút ở Selecao trong thời gian dài vì không ra sân thường xuyên ở MU. Dưới thời HLV Ralf Rangnick, Telles được trao cơ hội trở lại và thể hiện khá tốt, do đó nhận phần thưởng từ HLV Tite.

Đội hình tuyển Brazil vắng Roberto Firmino, cầu thủ không có phong độ cao ở Liverpool. Neymar cũng chưa hồi phục chấn thương, do đó vắng mặt.

"Lão tướng" Dani Alves được triệu tập trở lại sau khi tái xuất trong màu áo Barca và thể hiện phong độ khá tốt. Philippe Coutinho tiếp tục góp mặt cùng Selecao sau khi rời Barca để chuyển tới Aston Villa.

HLV Tite triệu tập những cái tên thường xuyên lên tuyển một năm qua. Palmeiras, Everton Ribeiro, Gabriel Barbosa là những tuyển thủ Brazil đang thi đấu ở giải vô địch quốc gia của nước này.

Brazil sẽ đụng độ Ecuador (ngày 28/1) và Paraguay (2/2) ở vòng loại World Cup 2022 khu vực Nam Mỹ. Lúc này, thầy trò HLV Tite dẫn đầu bảng với 35 điểm, nhiều hơn Argentina 6 điểm, do đó rộng cửa vượt qua vòng loại.

World Weaver Press has acquired the rights to publish an English translation of the science fiction anthology Solarpunk – Histórias Ecológicas e Fantásticas em um Mundo Sustentável, originally published in 2012 by Editora Draco in São Paulo, Brazil. Solarpunk is an anthology of optimistic science fiction stories compiled by Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro, which envision a world run on renewable energies, featuring nine authors from Brazil and Portugal including Carlos Orsi, Telmo Marçal, Romeu Martins, Antonio Luiz M. Costa, Gabriel Cantareira, Daniel I. Dutra, André S. Silva, Roberta Spindler, and Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro. The anthology will be translated from Portuguese to English by Fábio Fernandes, and publication is expected in the first half of 2018. Portuguese artist José Baetas will create interior illustrations for the anthology.

A Kickstarter campaign will run during the summer of 2017 to assist with translation costs!

ABOUT THE ANTHOLOGIST

Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro had two novelettes published in Brazilian Asimov’s: hard SF “Mythic Aliens” and “The Ethics of Treason”; the latter was the first alternative history story in Brazilian and Portuguese science fiction. His alternative history novelette “The Vampire of New Holland” won the Nova Award in 1996, while his SF novelette “The Daughter of the Predator” won the Nautilus in 1999. His main short fiction collections are: Other Histories…, The Vampire of New Holland, Other Brazils, Taikodom: Chronicles and The Best of Carla Cristina Pereira. Gerson has published four novels so far: Xochiquetzal: An Aztec Princess Among the Incas, The Guardian of Memory, The Adventures of the Vampire of Palmares and Strsangers in Paradise. He has edited eight short fiction anthologies so far: Phantastica Brasiliana, How Lustful my Alien Girl Was!, Vaporpunk, Dieselpunk, Solarpunk, Fantastic Erotica 1, Super-Heroes, and Dinosaurs. Beyond the science fiction borders, he published Vita Vinum Est!: History of Wine in the Roman World.

ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR

Fábio Fernandes lives in São Paulo, Brazil. He has published two books so far, an essay on William Gibson’s fiction, A Construção do Imaginário Cyber, and a cyberpunk novel, Os Dias da Peste (both in Portuguese). Also a translator, he is responsible for the translation to Brazilian Portuguese of several SF novels, including Neuromancer, Snow Crash, and A Clockwork Orange. His short stories have been published online in Brazil, Portugal, Romania, the UK, New Zealand, and the USA, and also in Ann and Jeff VanderMeer’s Steampunk II: Steampunk Reloaded and Southern Fried Weirdness: Reconstruction (2011), The Apex Book of World SF, Vol 2, Stories for Chip. He co-edited (with Djibril al-Ayad) the postcolonial anthology We See a Different Frontier. He is a graduate of Clarion West (class of 2013), and a slush reader for Clarkesworld Magazine.

WHAT IS SOLARPUNK?

Solarpunk is an emerging subgenre of optimistic science fiction that imagines the radical possibility that we might not destroy ourselves and our planet (or that if we nearly do, we'll get it together after that). Like Cli-Fi, eco-speculation, and eco-weird, solarpunk engages with issues of climate change, renewable energies, and the politics of sustainability, and explores the implications of those changes through a human lens. While other types of climate fiction usually present a bleak, dystopian, or apocalyptic vision of the future, solarpunk is hopeful, often portraying unique adaptations to ecological challenges.

While there has been much discussion about solarpunk as an aesthetic, there are few defining texts that put these ideas into practice—which is one reason we felt it was so important to bring this Brazilian anthology to an English-speaking readership. Many of the works of Kim Stanley Robinson fit the description, especially Pacific Edge (1990) and New York 2140 (2017). Other anthologies of solarpunk short fiction include Wings of Renewal, edited by Claudie Arseneault and Brenda Pierson (2015), and Sunvault: Stories of Solarpunk and Eco-Speculation, edited by Phoebe Wagner and Brontë Christopher Wieland (forthcoming 2017).

E mais uma Bienal chegou e passou. Só agora, depois de dois dias em casa, consegui sentar e começar a falar sobre como foi esta edição. Dormi quase 12 horas seguidas quando cheguei a Santos – só para vocês terem uma noção! Foi cansativo? Demais. Foi maravilhoso? Com toda a certeza.

Foi a quarta Bienal que compareci como autora e a terceira que estive presente em um estande próprio, o da Editora Draco. É uma sensação muito boa estar em mais uma Bienal com esta experiência, como um autora com cinco romances publicados e tantos contos em coletâneas, revistas, publicações independentes etc. De certa maneira, o medo e a timidez são menores, a carga de responsabilidade é maior, mas a felicidade de estar junto aos leitores não muda: é sempre mágico apresentar meus livros a eles, sentir seu carinho, compartilhar histórias. E ainda há a experiência maravilhosa de que, agora, alguns leitores conhecem você e retornam de outras Bienais, procurando seus novos livros, desejando aquela continuação, contando como foi a leitura desta ou daquela obra. Tem coisa mais amor, gente?

Desde o início da Bienal, eu só pensava nela. Sonhava todos os dias com o evento. Foi uma pena não ter conseguido um voo para o feriado de 7 de setembro, queria muito já estar lá, mas os preços e os horários para o Rio estavam impraticáveis. Mas passei o dia todo preparando brindes e mimos para os leitores, fazendo as malas e, claro, pensando na Bienal!

Na sexta-feira eu e o marido Felipe Alvares partimos daqui de Santos ainda de madrugada em direção a Congonhas, em São Paulo, e dali para o Rio, onde encontramos o amigo de todas as horas e eventos, Eduardo Kasse, autor da Série Tempos de Sangue. E esse é parceiro mesmo, amigo de verdade! Nem existem palavras para descrever o coração enorme desse cara e o quanto eu o admiro. Obrigada por tudo! Bem, nós seguimos os três juntos de Uber até o Rio Centro e aí a batalha começou.

Lá encontramos a amiga-irmã Melissa de Sá, autora e amiga de quem falo sempre por aqui: amiga há mais de 15 anos, parceira de escrita, eventos e loucuras, uma mulher maravilhosa que admiro demais e que sempre quero abraçar por horas ao reencontrar. Ela já chegou vendendo de montão seu sucesso, Metrópole: Despertar, encantando os leitores em plena manhã de sexta-feira na Bienal.

Também reencontramos a Mãe dos Dragões, Dona Isilda, fofíssima, batalhadora e super carinhosa, que abraço gostoso! Mãe do editor Erick Sama, outro amigo de verdade, um cara que respeito e admiro demais, é sempre bom demais revê-lo.

Às 11 horas estava marcado o Encontro de Autores e Leitores no estande da Amazon KDP, então eu e o marido corremos para lá. Foi uma oportunidade maravilhosa! O bate-papo foi incrível, falamos muito sobre literatura nacional, nossas carreiras e obras, auto-publicação no KDP, teve sorteio de brindes e, claro, muitos leitores, o que foi o máximo! Conheci vários escritores incríveis como: Cinthia Freire, Diogo Andrade, Lucy Dib, Larissa Maps, Letícia Black, Mirela Paes, Paula Toyneti Benalia, Naty Rangel e S. Miller. Obrigada demais à Amazon KDP e à querida Karen Sanches que proporcionaram o encontro e me convidaram.

Depois do encontro na Amazon, rapidinho corri para o estande da Editora Draco mais uma vez. A fofa e incansável Vivianne Fair, autora de A Rainha Sombria e a Série A Caçadora, já estava lá, de cosplay, acompanhada do seu príncipe, os dois estavam lindos demais! Atraíram vários leitores que se encantavam com eles e com as obras. Casal que aquece nossos corações!

Adorei encontrar meus novos bebês literários: Boy’s Love – Meia-noite sem estrelas e Magos, com o conto “Coração de Ouro” – que, aliás, é um prólogo para meu light novel BL. Os livros estão lindos! Fiquei completamente apaixonada pela edição; as ilustrações de Dandansama para meu BL estão de arrasar, lindas demais! É tão emocionante ver algo que você imaginou e escreveu desenhado… Sensação maravilhosa!

O dia ainda contou com a presença da fofa da Aya Imaeda, autora de O Segredo do Kelpie, que eu já conhecia de seu conto fantástico “Canção do Corvo” na coletânea Samurais x Ninjas. Que pessoa querida! Primeira Bienal, primeiro romance, e já estava arrasando, encantando todo mundo, vendendo de montão e ajudando demais a equipe. Total #DracoSpirit! ❤

Ainda na sexta-feira, Jornada para Far Lands – uma aventura não oficial de Minecraft ESGOTOU! Foi uma loucura imensa, vários leitores pequenininhos fascinados com a história, que amavam levar o livro, tirar uma foto com a autora e com a espada de diamante do jogo. Fofos demais! Energia muito boa, adoro receber esse carinho das crianças!

E no final do dia chegou também Ana Lúcia Merege, autora da Série Athelgard, e também organizadora do mais novo lançamento da editora, Magos.

Apesar de ser apenas uma sexta-feira comum, pós-feriado, o dia foi incrível e de muitos encontros com leitores e, claro, vendas! Foi maravilhoso ver o time unido, se ajudando e compartilhando, juntos, histórias, risadas e literatura.

O sábado prometia e cumpriu! Dia cheio, com muitos e muitos leitores visitando o estande. Quem chegou nesse dia foi a Dana Guedes – desabrigada, tadinha, nós a recebemos em nosso quarto no hotel e foi só alegria! Essa pessoa querida e super divertida, autora de três light novels, especialmente o lançamento Boy’s Love – A Ilha dos Perdidos (que também ESGOTOU!) foi uma das responsáveis pela animação total do estande no sábado. Teve dancinha sim! Teve funk da Draco sim! E teve #DracoSexy! UHUUUUULLL!!!

O Gerson Lodi-Ribeiro, autor veterano de ficção científica e do lançamento Octopusgarden também estava por lá, super gentil e amável como sempre.

Sábado foi o dia de mais leitores encontrarem seu Inverso e Reverso e tive o prazer de encontrar alguns deles da Bienal do Rio de 2015 que, já tendo adquirido Inverso daquela vez, agora estavam voltando pela continuação, Reverso. Delícia demais! E foi impressionante também quantas pessoas passaram pelo estande alucinadas pela nossa coleção Boy’s Love e levaram todos juntos, incluindo meu Boy’s Love – Meia-noite sem estrelas. Amorzinho demais! ❤

Vários blogueiros também nos visitaram no estande, todos eles maravilhosos, cheio de energia, carinho e amor! (Se eu esquecer alguém, me perdoem!) Teve o Paulo Vinícius, do Ficções Humanas, a Kira, do Dicas da Kira, a Pimenta, do Odin com Pimenta, a Thainá, do Colhendo Sonhos, a Nikkie, do Sou Aficcionado… E no domingo teve a Vanessa Assis (acompanhada da mãe Vanda, olha que amor!), do Dica do Leitor. Ah, e como não poderia faltar, fui visitar os queridos Ara e Érico Robert do Sou Aficcionado, que estavam ocupadíssimos nesta Bienal, trabalhando, mas que são sempre amigos maravilhosos de rever, abraçar e apertar.

Encontrei também o querido Eric Novello, autor de vários livros incríveis e do lançamento Ninguém Nasce Herói, sempre um amor, e o fofo do Sandro Quintana, de Verdûncio e Azulino – Uma amizade além das diferenças, querido demais! Uma das melhores coisas da Bienal é encontrar essas pessoas tão queridas, que a gente vê uma vez por ano – ou a cada dois anos!

No domingo estávamos só o pó, mas fomos para a batalha final cheios de vontade e animação. Novamente tivemos um dia cheio, com muitas visitas de leitores incríveis e cheios de carinho. Foram muitas pessoas maravilhosas, com histórias de vida para dividir com a gente (e quem disse que autor também não se emociona com as histórias dos outros?).

Teve também a presença de Priscilla Matsumoto no domingo, com seu lançamento O Infinito no Meio, sempre elegante e gentil.

Foi lindo ver todo o time #DracoSpirit empenhado em encantar os leitores e apresentar nossas obras, todos se ajudando e curtindo a companhia uns dos outros. Deu um calorzinho no coração ao ver a Vivi esgotando A Caçadora – Sorriso de Vampiro, a Dana sempre feliz – mesmo com um baita machucado bizarro no pé – mostrando os BLs para leitores apaixonados por yaoi (que levavam toda a coleção!), a Melissa batendo suas metas distópicas de Metrópole, a Aya arrasando com o Kelpie na primeira Bienal, leitores do Edu Kasse rapando toda a série das prateleiras e esgotando Guerras Eternas.

É isso que é o #DracoSpirit. É isso que é a Bienal. Um time de amigos, uma família.

Bienal do Rio 2017 – Foi maravilhosa! E mais uma Bienal chegou e passou. Só agora, depois de dois dias em casa, consegui sentar e começar a falar sobre como foi esta edição.
