~ Parchment leaf from a Koran written in Hijazi.
Place of origin: Hijaz Province, the Arabian Peninsula or Syria
Date: 2nd half of 7th century
▪︎From the source: This leaf is a fragment from one of the oldest extant copies of the Koran. It is a palimpsest: the original text was scraped off and a new one was written on the parchment. In time, the original text reemerged and now can be read as a shadow under the later one. Both are transcripts of the Koran’s sura 2, “The Cow.” Both texts were written in Hijazi, the earliest Arabic script used for Korans and the one that was used in Mecca when the Islamic expansion got under way in earnest.

The Birmingham Quran Manuscript is currently believed to be the oldest Quran in the world. This manuscript consists of two leaves of parchment that are a fragment of an early Quranic manuscript dated between 568 AD – 645 AD. Researchers at the University of Birmingham in England dated the parchment to within a 95.4% accuracy.⠀ ⠀ This means that the manuscript may have been written shortly after the Prophet Muhammad died as he is thought to have lived between 570 AD – 632 AD. The manuscript contains text from suras (chapters) 18 – 20 and is written in Arabic Hijazi script. David Dobrik
I started to watch Jennxpenn after my Dad passed and then that went on until the end of January, then that's when I stumbled across the one and only David Dobrik.
Basically, youtubers use this thing called "click bait" which is basically a taunting title or picture on the youtubers' video that makes people want to click on it to watch, since more views on their video means more money. That's what happened to me. So I already knew of a youtuber called "The Gabbie Show" and in David Dobrik's thumbnail(picture) for his video, she was in it and it was titled "WHATS HER DEAL!!?" and the picture was her strangling him against a wall. I clicked on it to see, well, what her deal was, and the video was so hilarious and funny so I basically binged watched David Dobrik's videos the rest of that day.
David Dobrik mainly has all his friends star in his "vlogs", which is basically recording yourself for the day then uploading it, an inside on your everyday life. They all have such a hilarious and enjoyable sense of humor that kind of "hooks you in". His videos are mainly scripted, which I know is disappointing, but not all of it is. Even so, the skits are hilarious and make you laugh louder than the noise of the video.. In his videos, there is definitely cussing, so it's recommended that only teenagers and up watch, or else some parents will get mad.
Youtubers make merchandise, meaning if they have an inside joke or a funny video that they like, they will print that idea on shirts, hoodies, blankets, and more, and sell it for a lot of money. It's a great way for them to make money and for their fans to feel like a true fan. Of course, I caved into that too, and that resulted in two shirts and one hoodie, and the total cost being about $100. And of course it was irresponsible, but on my behalf, I'd like to support the guy who got me through a very tough time.
From February to late April, my daily routine was to go to school as a freshman, come home and watch David Dobrik for about two to three hours, finish homework, eat dinner, shower, then watch David Dobrik again. This was a really unhealthy schedule for me since before tragedy hit, I wouldn't spend hours on my phone and I would run for seven to ten miles everyday after school.
By the end of April, I had watched all of David's videos on both of his accounts and I even watched his interviews and podcasts, basically what obsession turns into. When I finished all of his videos, I didn't know what to do then, so I began rewatching them all over again, as a normal person would. All day at school, I would only look forward to going home to watch his videos so I would scramble to finish my homework in my last class so I wouldn't have it be a distraction. I think anyone would be amazed that I finished all of his videos again in about a little over one week.
It's safe to say that he was my favorite youtuber. I think that anyone, if old enough to, would enjoy any of his videos because it will honestly just brighten their day. I wasn't totally isolated from my family either, since I would sit downstairs with them and causally talk to them as I stare at the screen of my phone. Now if you are totally busy, I do not recommend binge watching like I did. But yet again, his videos are each four minutes and twenty-one seconds each so I think it's safe to squeeze one into your day.
Some of David's friends are Zane Hijazi, Heath Hussar, Liza Koshy, Scotty Sire, Todd Smith, Jason Nash, Alex Ernst, Gabbie Hanna, and literally so many more. David's vlogs wouldn't be what they are without all his friends. They just bring such humor and enlightenment to the videos.
So how did David Dobrik impact me? At the time, I just naturally was in a more negative mood ever since the death, so I wouldn't say that YouTube made me like that. However, I did get mad when I had to stop watching videos to go do chores or help make dinner. But I think inside, I gained a little bit of light that helped me to be a little brighter. Since I was always smiling and laughing when I watched his videos, I think my family started to see a little light breaking through the dark.
Youtube in general was a very powerful form of help to me. And as said on my last blog post, it just helped me smile again when I did not want to be around other people. I know it definitely does not seem like it, but I would always spend time with my family. Since I never wanted to leave home during that time, I would always be around them and they would always be supportive and cheerful to help make that time a lot easier. Of course, youtube will not help everyone, obviously. Some will find the comfort in hanging out with friends or maybe just taking time to think everyday. Since I avoided hanging out with my friends to be alone, youtubers were almost like “replacment friends” since they would talk and I would not have to do any of the talking. It sounds pretty lame honestly, but when basically everyone is irrelevant, except family, you still need a bit of “socializing”, in a strange way.
Death in a family or even of a friend is one of the most painful things to go through. It's like no one understands the pain of it except you and those who were also affected by it. There is obviously so many different ways how people cope, but YouTube was one of the things that helped me. Being a "phone person", it was such an easy resort to go to and I think it would be for lots of other kids, now that almost every kid has one. Of course family needs to stick together through a time like that but sometimes, you just need other things to help you.

Crafting the Koran
By Robert F. Worth Early manuscripts of the Koran are now on display, under glass, at the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery in Washington, D.C., together forming an ur-text in fragments. They are yellowed pages, splotchy at the edges, with lines of brown Arabic text in the stark, vertical script known as Hijazi. One of the striking features of the show is the visual progression of the Koran from the…
