Problems (objective and personal) I'm not seeing discussed a lot w this new WatcherTV thing, in no particular order:

-Alienates people internationally who literally CANNOT GET the streaming service!

-Alienates casual fans who don't watch or want to watch all of their shows. Putting down 60 bucks a year to watch just one or two shows is kind of insane, at least for me.

-The volume of content Watcher has produced historically hasn't been enough to justify a separate streamer. I understand there's no way a small team could compete with something like Netflix, obviously, but that's what you're trying to do by putting yourself in the streamer market.

-Will this streamer be secure? What steps are in place to protect your viewers info? ESPECIALLY payment info.

-Will it be easily watchable on multiple devices? I watch YouTube videos on my phone at work 90% of the time, or at home on my TV thru my switch. Is this a browser only deal?

-What are the internet requirements for this? Believe it or not most streaming services won't run on my internet personally. I don't have any for that reason. I can watch YouTube on 360p, or on my 2-bar-reception phone data. Not everywhere has stable reliable internet.

-The suddenness and totality of the move was going to be jarring no matter what, if the idea had been introduced gradually or started as a hybrid model to test audience interest there wouldn't be nearly this amount of pushback.

-I understand the people saying "pay artists!!" Bc I am one, and I get that their quality is expensive and they have a whole company's worth of people to support. I do actually think their work is worth paying for! Everyone's is! But convincing anyone to pay for something they previously got for free is going to be a hard sell. They were still getting paid before, they're now just asking us to pay instead of the advertisers. Idk about you, but that's a way bigger hit to my pocketbook than a multimillion dollar company's bank account.

-I get that YouTube can be a really shitty place to be a creator sometimes, and that being beholden to advertisers is something they don't want to be. It's why they left Buzzfeed! They already have a patreon and merch and it's clearly not been enough for their ambitions. But shooting yourself in the foot because your running shoes are wearing out isn't going to make you a better marathon runner. They had to know that there was going to be a not small portion of their audience unwilling to make this move with them (and again, lots literally aren't able to!)

-If they had a free w/ ads option, or even did a hybrid model with whole shows behind the pay wall, or even just ran a fucking crowd funding campaign to help cover costs of new seasons of shows, any of those things could have worked. They don't even have YouTube memberships turned on, which I've personally seen many many channels do even when they already have a patreon. It really doesn't seem like they've exhausted other options, at least from an outside perspective, which is all we have as viewers!

-I get that this has been in the works for a long time, and that there probably isn't a way for them to back out now. But I hope they can find a way to make this more accessible if they want it to work at all. I truly am not wishing for their downfall, but the whole situation is an awful mess.

Idk, rant over. As a lot of you are I'm feeling very disappointed and upset with this one, and I'm not paying for it either. Hope the boys can salvage this one for their and their crew's sake. Would really hate for this to be the end.

Fuck Netflix and fuck everyone who fought against this show.

Which is exactly what makes Netflix so fucking stupid for trying to cite numbers as the reason for the abrupt cancellation. Especially when the numbers are public, have been public since the series' debut, and have been praised the entire time.

And it's scary that they're getting so comfortable with lying when the actual numbers are right in front of our faces. They're not announcing these cancellations with "heavy hearts" anymore. They've dropped the act of caring, and it's become more obvious than ever that it's because they don't think they even have to pretend to care about diversity anymore.

And they're right. The film industry has once again become a climate where they feeling comfortable exposing their bigotry to everyone, knowing there's nothing anyone can do and that they can just keep doing it.

We've seen the pattern. Batwoman, Legends, Legacies, Motherland: Fort Salem, The Wilds, now First Kill. I know there's many I've missed in that list. That's the worst part. Networks are not even disguising their intentions anymore.

First Kill's not the first and it won't be the last, but I really fucking hope it can be the loudest.

I'm really trying to not be a shithead about Dead Boy Detectives. I really am. I hope their show goes well for them. I hope the fans enjoy it. I hope they get as many seasons as the story needs. I won't be watching it; but that's a personal choice and not a call for a boycott or whatever. What I am having a problem with is the amount of advertising Netflix is doing to promote the show. Ads keep popping up. There's an "Ask the Cast Questions!" banner at the top of my Tumblr. How difficult would it have been to do even an eighth of that level of promotion for Lockwood and Co? There was some in the UK but I didn't see a damn thing in the US. Longtime fans of the book series didn't even know about the show until long after it was canceled.

It's just very frustrating that such an incredible show was cut short for no apparent reason. It had an amazing foundation with the phenomenal book series, a production company that clearly cared about the story, and an exceptionally talented cast. There was a clear ending to the story so no worries about series that go on too long. Mostly, though, (selfishly) I desperately want to see The Hollow Boy adapted. It would have been utterly fantastic.

Netflix could have had both shows. Fans of one show could have been easily tempted to watch the other and both their audiences would have grown. Unfortunately, Netflix continues to choose to cut short excellent series and leave their customers bitter and pessimistic. People stop giving new shows a chance because there's too much risk caring about a story if it's going to be abandoned. The focus on immediate gratification and social media numbers will be the downfall of good storytelling and it is depressing to watch- especially when I'm paying more each month to see it happen.

as a person on the inside of the animation industry, are there signs that we might be heading to another dark age of animation like the 1980s (e.g. animation is regulated to just glorified toy commercials or dark fantasy movies)?

As far as I can glean, there are going to be precious few animated shows coming out over the next couple of years because not much was picked up during the pandemic. There are only a few things being developed here and there, and I'd wager that those properties "win" simply by existing in a competition-free environment. It takes a long time to produce animation, so almost anything greenlit right now is looking at a full year for turnaround. If you talk to people in the industry right now about jobs, they use words like "wastelend" and "ramen noodles".

Then you've got A.I., of course. The other night I was having dinner with a friend and I found myself in the A.I. conversation I always imagined myself having one day-- the one where we're talking with some immediacy about what the rest of our futures look like as artists, because we know they're not going to look the same ever again. It was pretty cool in a William Gibson sort of way, but I honestly didn't expect to be having that conversation for another decade. Turns out A.I. is becoming a problem right now.

I've already talked about the "art theft" angle, and that's not the problem I'm speaking about here. The problem I'm talking about is the "what do I do when what I do becomes trivial?" problem. If anyone can make a TV show or movie in a week or a day using AI assistance, who determines what gets seen? Networks, I'd imagine, would become redundant. You don't need to fork over $15 a month for Netflix if you can make Netflix-quality content yourself. And if you can't make anything decent even with A.I. assistance, surely someone on the internet can. There would be an incredible glut of content to choose from, so again... who decides what gets seen? An algorithm, probably. Who owns the algorithm?

Peak Dark Age will be the time period when the networks realize that they're going to die, and sink all of their resources into forcing their own survival on the rest of us. I imagine massive layoffs (you don't need multiple writers or artists or support staff when you've got the right tools.) Studios will want to own the tools (of course) and/or suppress the use of those tools by anyone who might want to cut into their profits. Expect to see "A.I. is just too dangerous for the public to utilize, so it needs to be left in the capable hands of corporations". Expect to see customizable Batmans, the ability to put your mom in any Star Wars, and the serialized fever-dreams of billionaires.

I think that's the next 5-10 years. And while that's happening, the tools will keep getting better and better until literally anyone can sit down, ask for an Oscar-worthy part-rom-com/part action movie starring a twenty-five year old Steve McQueen and and eighty year old Daniel Radcliffe rescuing Air Bud from the Death Star, and then watch the resulting film with some degree of satisfaction. There'll come a point when content of any visual, auditory, and written complexity can be generated on-the-fly, and the traditional limits of budgets and schedules will just be gone.

It's easy to spin off into fantasy and try to guess exactly what's coming. I could probably spin on that all day. But what I know is that the future of the animation industry won't look anything like what I've become accustomed to. And maybe that's okay because what I've become accustomed to looks nothing like the industry I started in. Things change, and you roll with the punches. Thanks to the self-fulfilling dystopian prophecy we find ourselves in, just about everyone on the planet is finding themselves rolling with the punches coming from the Powerful Greedy. That's less a "me problem" and more a planet-wide problem we should probably all sit down and hash out, like, yesterday.

My immediate problem as an artist (and yours if you're an artist too) is figuring out how to get your ideas seen in a world where the amount of entertainment content is exploding exponentially. Especially if you're the sort of artist who needs to eat and live somewhere.

So yeah, I think there's going to be just a little peppering of Dark Age coming up. But in every time of change, there are opportunities. Hey, I'm down for an animated Dark Fantasy movie. Let's do this!

I don't think I'll ever be over how much they sidelined Alina in her own show. Like, I get it. The Crows, especially Kaz/Kanej, are more marketable and clickable for Netflix. And looking at the fandom, most people seem to like the choice of giving the Crows way more screen time and relevance.

Given what we know from people who watched the early screening of the season, that exploration of Alina's Shu roots was probably racist as hell. But that doesn't change the fact that they advertised it and completely cut it out, instead of, you know, making an effort (like making it not racist in the first place...).

I'm just so angry at how season two frames Kaz' revenge on Pekka as more meaningful and important than Alina's effort to destroy the fold and unite a country. Like, sorry, but given the stakes, I couldn't care less about some teenage boy who wants to get back at a guy who duped him and his brother. Meanwhile, there's a girl with sun powers who fights a virtually immortal extremist and teams up with the privateer Prince in order to unite a fucking country and destroy a symbol of division. How is that not the focus of the show?!

At points, I forgot Alina and Co were even in that show because the emphasis was so heavily laid on the Crows. And it makes me so sad how often I see posts like "skipping over all the TGT scenes so I get back to the Crows". Like, obviously, no shaming, you do you. It's just sad how often I've seen people say that now. And that is not against the fans, but against the showrunners, cause they could have set the emphasis differently. But again, the Crows are more marketable.

So now we're gonna get a Six of Crows Spin-Off at some point probably and they can finally just ignore Alina altogether, like they always wanted. I just wonder why they didn't make a Six of Crows show to begin with instead of starting with the original trilogy. At least then, they could have also done the Crows justice instead of craming important scenes into it with too little building and context.

Disclaimer; these are just my opinions. I'm not looking to start a fight.

I'm getting concerned about Katara's character in Netflix's show.

In almost every trailer, advertisement, interview-at least the ones I've seen-they've been really trying to drive home the point that she's a warrior. Which she is; there's no disputing that. By the second half of the first season she's a force to be reckoned with.

But that's not what I think of when I think about her.

It's not her defining character trait. Her main goal isn't to become a warrior; at least, she doesn't want to be a warrior just because. It happens out of necessity, because she has talents and abilities that are huge assets when fighting.

But at her core, she's a caretaker. She's a girl who sacrificed her dreams and own desires for people who needed her at the age of eleven.

Having her openly pursue and argue with Sokka over the whole 'warrior' business almost seems to discount that. It adds a touch of immaturity and naivety to her character that just feels shallow. Katara has always understood sacrifice; what it means to give up your own wants for another's-she does this all the time.

It's one of the things I find most admirable about her character.

From episode one it's established that she's the person that makes sure everyone has everything together; she's not, primarily, a fighter. She can fight-and she does-but she's more than that. Katara holds the gaang together, both physically-cooking, repairing clothes, making sure everyone's healthy-and emotionally-calming Aang out of the Avatar State, encouraging Sokka, attempting, albeit unsuccessfully and overbearingly, to curb Toph's reckless antics. Even in season 3, when Zuko shows up, her mistrust and dislike of him is because she's trying to protect everyone else.

When I think of Katara, the first word I think of is 'motherly'. I don't want Netflix to box her into the Marvel-girlboss-power stereotype, scrubbing her of any depth and femininity in the name of making her a warrior. Being motherly doesn't make her weak; being the one who cooks, cleans, and makes sure people are, i don't know, sleeping, doesn't make her weak.

It makes her incredibly strong.

She's a warrior, but that's not her first characteristic. She's one of the few people in the series who truly understands how consequential their actions are. She understands that sacrifices need to be made; she's seen them made first hand. Katara's motherliness is an outward sign of the way that she sacrifices for others; she gives them her time, her energy, and her love. That's different than how her brother sacrifices, how Aang sacrifices, how everyone else in the series sacrifices; but that's okay.

I don't want Katara to be just a warrior. I don't want her arc to be purely about 'fighting sexism' or whatever. She's deeper than that. I'm sick of these copy-and-past boss girls hollywood keeps churning out. A;tla is full of so many complex female characters, they don't need to be changed to be 'strong' or something along those lines.

The greatest thing about Katara is that she was a strong female character before she had the ability to throw grown men across the battlefield; and her arc in the first season was so much more about her growing into her abilities than all oh 'woe is me, a female in a patriarchal society!' and I love that. She didn't just complain; she changed the status quo and proved that the Northerners were just plain wrong.

Her magic abilities aren't what make her strong; her ability to fight isn't what makes her strong; her proving that women can and will fight if necessary isn't what makes her strong;

Her passion, hope, love, motherliness, compassion, desire to impact the world in a positive way, and arc about learning to let go and forgive are the things that make her strong.

C'mon Netflix, don't scrub that for some Marvel copy-and-past.

Some thoughts when you're new in a fandom

For the third time today I've seen posts from various people ranting about Prime Video Good Omens and the latest promo video which shows some of the easter eggs from the first season.

The word were more or less, "Why are they releasing this, we've known for like 4 years."

Well, you know what? I don't. I didn’t know that. Because I've only known about Good Omens for a few months. I'm 46 and up until a year ago, I'd never heard of Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett or their works (yes, it's possible) because in France we don't advertise foreign literature and even less in the school curriculum (I speak from my own experience).

As proof, here's how articles start in France when you do a search on Neil Gaiman or Terry Pratchett

How did I come to watch Good Omens? First an online friend, who was posting on twitter about the show, gave me the first spark of interest. Then came The Sandman on Netflix. Which I watched because of a series of gifs about Hob and Dream (Not because I heard from the comics before). After watching this show, of course I was interested in the author of the original work and… the name Good Omens came back before my eyes. And there it is.

So, if you're a fan of the first hour, accept that baby fans like me don't yet know all the richness you've been living in for four or more years. Because I'm ready to accept all the knowledge you want to give me. And I'm infinitely grateful for it.

I was thinking about your glorious Save Rise efforts the other day, and how despite reguarly seeing Nick in 2018-2020 I NEVER heard of them, and I realized... Rise aired on Nicktoons, right? My TV service was popular, and expensive, yet a subscription plan that includes the basic Nick channel still did NOT have nicktoons. A kid could consistently watch Nick, but if they don't have some 200+ dollars to shill out every month, they may end up never even knowing about it, not even in promos.

So…Rise did not reach the people it should have…and A LOT Of it was because of Nickelodeon making it harder and harder to watch the show, by not putting it on air enough, moving it to a channel that not a lot of people have, and by NOT releasing it on streaming platforms where people can watch it. The reason it’s more popular now, is because more people are aware of it. It’s up to us to get the word out and make sure it reaches the people it needs to. I also have THIS video, which summarizes all the things that was against it from the start.

Nick pretty much pulled the plug on advertising, and they didn’t even bother to promote the movie, and it still garnered a much bigger fan base then before. I got into Rise because it came on Netflix.

And…heh…”glorious efforts.” Thanks. Sometimes, I feel like I’m alone in this and how much I want the show to come back, with original cast and crew, with Andy Suriano and Ant Ward at the helm. I honestly don’t know if my efforts will make a difference. Hey, I've worked a bit in animation and just wanted to point out that shows very often get pitched and bought out, and can sit in the back burner for a really long time depending on the market! Seems like with all the strikes and post covid lag, and a market thats already saturated with greek mythology atm (think percy jackson live action coming soon, youtube series, other webcomics, etc.), lore olympus is probably floating in the air atm until the time is right. These kinds of things can take years to happen, even 10+ years! Some of the most popular animated shows were pitched years before they were picked up and sent into production. Hoping in the time its on hold, they get some really good writers to clean up the story. I don't mean to disregard your post, but just a lil bit of info on how that nature works in animation. I love lore rekindled too, keep it up!

Oh hey thanks for your input! So I do actually have a diploma in animation (though I never ended up working in the larger industry) so I know a bit about how things like that can happen. Nimona's a great recent example, it was bought in 2015 by 20th Century Fox but never made it through development because of Disney purchasing them and bringing the project to a crawl due to it being LGBTQ+, then they shut down Blue Sky and that kept the project in limbo until it got picked up by a new studio and brought to Netflix. So it took well over 10 years for that one to finally hit the screen.

That said, most of that post is addressing the fact that if LO is going to get a TV show (I'm really strongly believing it isn't at this point, esp not with JHC but that's me) then stalling it out for 10 years or however long probably won't be the best move. Especially not with how things are going with animation at large.

While LO is the biggest on the WT platform, the platform itself still isn't as prestigious here in the west as say, DC or Marvel. Its platform and its comics just don't have that sort of longevity out here. LO is also undoubtedly nearing the end of its run and it's struggling to stay relevant as it is - so to make a show years down the road when it's long gone out of everyone's minds (which it will be as soon as it ends and WT starts shilling the next big thing) just sounds like a missed opportunity. It could rejuvenate interest, sure, but it could just as easily flop due to its fanbase having moved on/lost interest/etc. LO is pretty much reliant on WT's advertising at this point, it's not a good sign that WT has to keep putting notifications to read LO everywhere on the app. WT loooves the "strike while the iron is hot" methodology and now with the show they just drag it out? It feels less like striking the iron while it's hot and more like trying to get a fire going, period.

Like, when Nimona got its movie, it was like "omg Nimona's finally getting a movie!!!" but I can't help get the sense that if LO goes through that same treatment, the response is gonna be, "that gross comic with the underage girl and old man billionaire is still getting a TV show??" Maybe that's a mean assumption to make but if LO is struggling to stay relevant and in a positive light now, god knows what that's going to be like years from now if and when they do release a show.

Especially when it comes to comics like LO which generate so much criticism, I feel like it's going to go through the same thing Twilight did, where people adored it during the peak of its run but as soon as the series was over and the hype left everyone's brains it gave people room to actually reflect on it and realize how icky it was LOL (and if it goes the full way of Twilight, people will read it as a joke over how bad it is).

There are also theories in the community that a lot of what WT is doing with LO rn (paying for Rachel to be in the top billing spot at NYCC, getting her a second Eisner, etc.) could very well be them trying to "shop it around" for investors or a new network, by putting Rachel in the spotlight and going "see! look at how successful this comic is! buy it!" That's just a theory of course, but it really isn't a good look when LO wins awards and people ask why. It feels like WT's is trying to throw money at a problem without realizing what's causing the problem in the first place. It winning an Eisner or being hinted at a TV show or getting a top billing spot at NYCC won't give it legitimacy because the comic they're advertising is still garbage, they're trying to convince people it has merit when it doesn't. If anything, it'll make LO and WT lose even more credibility because it makes people wonder why the fuck a comic like LO is winning those awards and why it's being given more attention and opportunities over other comics on the platform that are far more deserving.

Anyways, this post is kinda all over the place, but that's my two cents, my point really is that if there is a show happening, it's definitely not happening soon (in spite of Rachel saying "yeah it's happening!") because there's no clear timeline or progress that's been made or even team in charge of it at this point - and if it happens down the road, its only chance of doing well will be if it gets a major overhaul in its writing IMO because the comic is way too much of a mess rn for television LOL

That said, I'd love to genuinely believe that the show will happen someday, but I feel like the best time for it to happen has passed, especially with the comic losing the quality and prestige it was sold to JHC for since then. That's just me though.

For example I have friends that are girls but know that really details of dates are off limits in conversations between us. And in reverse I wouldn't really give them details of my own dates. That is more guy talk for me and girl talk for them. So is this sort of 'friend-zone' being seen more as being allowed into some girl talk? Or something else entirely?

To me, there's a difference from a guy being in the friend-zone and being friends with someone who happens to be a girl. As you also indictate, being in the friend-zone means that the guy wants the relationship to change into a romantic or sexual relatationship, while the girl isn't interested in that.

The way I picture it, the relationship started out with the guy befriending the girl, hoping his winning personality and all-around quality of being a "nice guy" will make her fall in love with him. But if you advertise yourself as a friend, don't be surprised if that's how people see you.

Unfortunately for the guy, his qualities aren't the ones the girl is looking for in a lover. So she will make no attempts to move the relationship in that direction. And more often than not, the guy won't attempt so either, fearing her rejection. So the relationship will continue as a friendship.

But it won't be a balanced friendship. Whether he wants to or not, the guy will be sending off signals that he wants more out of the relationship. Which is just something that will make him even less appealing as a romantic partner: Why does he continue being in an unfulfilling relationship?

This kind of friendship is different from the friendship a girl can have with a "guy friend" and even with female friends. Because of the power imbalane, the girl can get more out of the relationship than she puts into it. And it's hard not to take advantage of that dynamic.

So the guy in the friend-zone may be summoned at short notice; "I don't care if you're watching a game, this is an emergency." Panting, he will arrive at her apartment, only to discover that the "emergency" consists in her no longer having access to her ex's Netflix account. And since her new lover is coming by for "Netflix and chill", she absolutely needs her friend-zone friend to borrow her the login details of his Netflix account.

In "return", he may become privy to details about her love life that she wouldn't be sharing with her guy friends or even her female friends. With girlfriends you're always careful about your image, not wanting to give off the impression of being a slut. But with your friend-zone friend you can let your guard down, knowing your secrets are safe with him.

So she can freely tell him all about how little of the Netflix show she and her lover actually got to see before they were making out on the couch, their hands all over each other. And how the evening progressed from there...

It may be a mixed pleasure for the friend-zone friend to discover that he's sitting on the very spot on the couch where another man rested his sweaty balls as the girl of the friend-zone-friend's dreams was bouncing up and down on his manhood. But you take what you get and you turn it into honesty, as the poet once said.

so the first thing is, we saw in these videos that the stranger things account, and we've seen this in previous posts too, they're not afraid to post about ships; especially fan ships. because we got in an elmax specific reference. there was a lot of jopper there was even jancy, lumax, elmax, but notice how there was never any mileven or byler.

you might be like "oh well if there was no byler mentioned and there was no mileven mentioned, then maybe they're just trying to be normal about it." no. no. let me explain let me fucking explain right now.

there's a theory that mileven is already broken up in case you didn't already know. the scene of them in California ("from Mike from Mike"), that [that scene] was technically their breakup, or that they're not really sure if they are still in a relationship. like it's kind of rocky. especially since Mike said this was the "first real fight that they've ever had". definitely some questions on whether or not they're still together, that kind of stuff, since they don't seem to be too close when they get back to Hawkins.

people theorize that they are broken up, or they've already broke up, that they broke up off screen, on the car ride to Hawkins. there's a bunch of stuff about that.

I think byler not being mentioned and mileven not being mentioned works more in byler's favor than it does for mileven.

byler is obviously something that The Duffer Brothers have tried to subtly build up over time. this is quite literally Four Seasons in the making, or if you don't want to count season 1 this is three seasons in the making. hours and hours worth of runtime for this subtle little buildup. and we know that the duffers don't feel the need, or the writers don't feel the need, to come outright and say whatever they're trying to convey. Will came out to Jonathan but he never went, "I'm gay." we, as the viewer, are supposed to take these little pieces and piece it together in our minds. we're supposed to realize through all these little hints, "oh will is definitely gay and he has a crush on Mike."

now even outside of the show, in media campaigns, in advertisements, in marketing--the show is slowly trying to shift you away from paying attention to mileven and closer to paying attention to byler. there were more byler moments in these videos than there were mileven. they never said it outright but the facts are there.

I don't know if it was always their intention for Mike to end up with Will, but there is evidence in The Stranger Things Bible that from day one they wanted will to have sexual identity issues. if they're trying to subtly build up at something like byler I don't think that they would ever really try to bring [it] light to people who haven't already heard [of] it. the vast majority of stranger things fans, like casual stranger things fans that just watch the show when it comes out, they have they have no fucking clue what byler is, or they might know that will is gay but they're not sure about Mike.

and so I don't think Netflix, or stranger things writers, or marketing teamm would go out of their way to make [sure] that more casual audience try and pay attention more to byler than they do mileven. and then, on the flip side, they're trying to not feature mileven as much, so when they do build up to byler they're like, "look at these subtle hints that we were giving you the whole time."

there was foreshadowing from episode fucking one. they built up will to be gay and people were oblivious (but the real ones knew). and then when it came out everybody was like, "oh I see what they mean now. in the first episode and in the first season and how this was a gradual buildup to will coming out."

now what I'm trying to say is I think that they're trying to do that with byler, even if it's just through media campaigns.

they are trying to get you subtly to try to take your mind off of Mike and eleven, off of their relationship--and I'm not trying to say they're pointing you in the direction to look at byler, but the fact that they're trying to take the spotlight off of what most fans consider to be the "main relationship" of the show should definitely be something worth acknowledging.

I'm not going to sit here and be like, "if you still ship mileven you're delusional," or like "fuck you, I hate mileven," that kind of shit, because if you do like mileven, that's fine. I personally disagree with you. but don't come out here and say--oh my God I literally saw somebody in the Instagram comments being like, "fuck you for not putting in mileven." girl. these are the creators of the show. how. how are you going to be like "fuck you" to the creators of the show for purposefully not including parts of the show that they don't want you to pay attention to??

If I had a nickel for every time my dad unintentionally got me invested in an established, wildly popular IP through its new live-action show that was released on a streaming service, I'd have two nickels, etc., etc.

Actually, scratch that, I'd have at least three!

But seriously, my dad is one of those people that streaming services probably kill for: a guy who, even though he has no idea what the IP is, will get interested enough in a show's advertising (or, better yet, just interested in the vibes of it when he stumbles across it on the service's main menu) that he'll want to watch it out of pure interest.

This happened with One Piece, when I was uninterested in watching the new Netflix adaptation because of how little I knew about the franchise (and now my dad and I are 200+ episodes into the anime).

This happened with The Last of Us, which I was uninterested in watching because I didn't know anything about the original games (I'm especially glad I watched the show because afterwards, I could thoroughly appreciate the Last of Us cocktails that I got at an Edinburgh popup bar).

And now it's happened with Fallout, which I was uninterested in because, while I knew a teeny bit about the games, I thought I wouldn't enjoy because I didn't play/watch any of those games, and I'm not really a post-apocalypse kinda person (and yet, when I watched the show with my dad, I surprised myself with just how many references I got and how much I cared about its faithfulness to details from the games).

And EVERY TIME this happened, with my dad either begging me to watch this show he viewed while I was away from home (Last of Us), begging me to watch a new show with him because he likes watching TV with other people (Fallout), or just putting it on one evening out of interest while I was in the room (One Piece), he had no idea what its origins were, at least when he first started watching.

For example, with the Netflix One Piece show, after watching a few scenes with him, I remember remarking, "Huh, I didn't think you'd be interested in a live action anime adaptation."

He immediately replied, "Wait, this was an anime?"

Same thing happened with Fallout when I mentioned that I didn't know too much about the video games.

I don't really have a good conclusion to this post. I just thought it was a fascinating thing to have happened more than once. Good on you, dad, for proving that people can get into live-action adaptations for more than familiarity/nostalgia.

Nimona

fucking hate to make free advertisment for a Netflix show (especially now that they've blocked password sharing) but here are my thoughts on Nimona. Better late than never, I haven't checked the tag yet, but I doubt my observations are anything original. Have them anyway.

Nimona is an apt allegory on how oppression isn't abolished by expanding the circle of oppressors, but rather by overthrowing the system. Ballister set out to be the first knight not born from a royal bloodline, but he wasn't accepted and his ambitions to rise in rank were squashed by a political plot against him. During the course of the story he learns that washing clean his name doesn't fix the problem of systemic oppression. Ballister might've been lucky enough to rise into the ranks of the oppressors and thus stop his own oppression, but the system drawing a sharp line through society and dividing it would still persist. In the final battle, that line gets eradicated by Nimona smashing the literal wall around the city.

Also it is of course about queerness, and which tightly defined 'ways of queerness' have become socially acceptable and which haven't. Ballister and Ambrosius are both gay, but due to Bal's social background he is not accepted. It's the same with rich, cultivated gay couples becoming somewhat of fashion icons in the public eye to the degree that it's a stereotype that gay men know their way around fashion. This disregards the many other facets of queer identity, to which Nimona herself alludes to with her shapeshifting, saying about it that she only feels good if she keeps shifting. The same is true for the queer community: we are only truly respected if all of us are, not just those clean-washed and bleached versions of us that mainstream deems acceptable for their own consumption.

On another note, do Bal and Ambrosius also get back together in the comic? Or is it at least treated with a little more complexity? I remember back then seeing so many posts swooning about those two, but the lack of narrative reflection on the fundamental distrust of Ambrosius towards Bal is just unsettling for them to just get back to the status quo. Ambro, my boy, at least do some proper groveling. Yer man Bal got dragged into this against his will and then helped reform society. tbh Bal deserves better and Ambrosius is such a boring character, I don't even want to see him in a toxic relationship, let alone one that poses as 'healthy'. Get yourself a better man, Bal.

hey, i know that you said that charles would always want to talk about his dom on dts. but i was thinking about if netflix tried to hide the fact the drivers had doms without actually telling the drivers. because i know for a fact that they would get no footage of charles because every other sentence is about his dom.

I really thought I had answered this ask, but then I realised that I actually had just been thinking about this ask constantly for a few days but didnt actually answer it. Anyway, lets answer this now finally cause I love it so much :))

Maybe Netflix specifically try to hide the fact that some drivers have dominants? They don't necessarily care about showing dominant drivers that have submissives, because that's considered 'normal'. A driver is expected to be dominant, that's what people think of when they think of F1 drivers and Netflix wants to keep that image for DTS.

Which has never really been an issue before. Most submissive drivers try their best to act as dominant as possible, and certainly don't advertise having a dominant. Charles never tried to keep being submissive a secret, but his old dominant was terrible to him and so of course he never spoke about them.

But then he meets you! And now suddenly he has the best dominant imaginable and he loves you so so much and of course he's always going to talk about you! And he's a high needs submissive, so of course he's going to always want you near him.

It's damn near impossible for the film crew to get any footage of Charles without you being there. They set up two separate days for filming Charles outside of the race track and both times you're there, and both times Charles nearly cries when they try to get him away from you.

So yeah, it's VERY difficult to get Charles alone.

And to get Charles to not talk about you? Yeah that's a losing battle before it's even began.

They ask Charles his hopes for the season, and he talks about how much more hopeful he is now that he has a new dominant. They ask him how his race was, and at first it seems okay but then he goes on to talk about how his dominant helped him prep for the race.

The biggest issue though, is once you've collared him.

Because Charles REFUSES to take his collar off before being interviewed. The filming team ask him like it's nothing, like he isn't being asked to do something that would break him.

At first he just laughs and shakes his head, thinking that will be it. But then they keep on pressuring him, so he's more firm. You taught him to speak up for himself, and so he is. That's what makes him stay firm, thinking about being your good boy.

He ends up walking out of that interview, refusing to even entertain the idea of taking his collar off. The ONLY person who can take his collar off is you and then only for short periods before you put it right back on.

He goes to you, actually feeling proud of himself cause he stood up for himself! He told the filming crew no and he didnt allow them to push him into something he wasn't comfortable with!

Of course you give him so much praise for it, so much. He gets kisses and cuddles and praise and SO many forehead kisses.

You go with to every interview from then on, making sure the crew doesn't suggest anything like that again.

If they don't want to include Charles talking about you in DTS, then they'll just have to pay the editors overtime and make it work.

It's not a good discussion to break S7 into 2 parts but they did the same thing with S1, also 16 episodes of 8/8. What I don't get is the point some make that they lost interest due to long droughts. At this point there are countless shows to choose from and watch while OL is filming. Just watch those and when OL comes back watch it. They make it sound like OL is the only one they watch.

There's a lot of cons and pros to say about it. And then there's people that have different opinions, or interests.

S1 being split in 2 parts, well the show was new, people were more excited and if you look at it, releasing it 9 months apart was more like 2 seasons and the wait for the second half was not felt as the way people feel now about S7 being split in 2 parts.

Also take into account that the hiatus between S5 and S6 had been 2 years and only had 8 episodes - all for a good reason which every one could understand. Then they advertised that the 'good news' was that S7 will be extra long. The 4 episodes that would have been on S6 will come with S7, and the promise was 16 episodes. Splitting it now in 2 parts of 8 episodes, people feel duped and disappointed. Saying why promise it when it is actually aired as if there are 2 seasons! And you can't argue much with that imo.

It's also the time in between the 2 parts. If you compare it f.i with the Netflix series YOU S4, which also was released in 2 parts. The time in between was only one month! Plus the episodes can be binged after each other, people don't have to wait a week in between. Of course where one doesn't mind or even likes to have an episode dropped every week, the other prefers to binge them.

Thing is, people subscribe to Starz just for OL. And they feel duped twice, first because a long season was promised and second because the time in between. Which will cost them another time to subscribe. Yes, I read a lot of them saying, well I just subscribe for one month and watch them all together. Others even saying they'll wait till all episodes are there and will watch them all together. And a third group saying they'll wait for the DVD or for Netflix (which in most countries will be like a year later on). And finally a group that says, the already lost interest for different reasons and most likely wont watch anymore.

People already get tired of all the streaming services there are. Subscribing to yet another one for a particular show, it's not what the majority of people like to spend their money on, or even are able to spend it that way. Of course you can switch, you can plan it out if you want to. A number probably will do so, but a huge number of people will just say, oh well, plenty of shows on the streaming service I have a subscription to, I wont miss out much. People will move on more easily.

Ergo, it is splitting the fandom into parts and not really helping the popularity of the show. As we all know it will all come to an end with S8 (which you can probably see in 2025, and for Netflix viewers in 2026) and perhaps Starz or the show itself isn't that much interested to keep the popularity of the show. But Starz will be interested in keeping their subscribers! Most likely why they changed the day to Friday on which episodes will air, and air another show on the more popular slot on Sunday, hoping it will be a show that keeps their subscribers hanging on.

At the end of the day it's all depending on each individual's choices and preferences. But seeing so many unhappy comments and criticisms, well everyone can draw their conclusions from it.
