Clyde Donovan!
Now that I have your attention, Clyde Donovan. Let’s talk about him for a minute. I am a little bit afraid for the future of his character, mostly because of what happened to him in season 26.
But first: Clyde’s evolution
He started as, to put it lightly, just a fucking idiot. He continues to be really dumb, but he was so dumb back then. He has like one line in the movie, and it’s only one word, and it’s the infamous “5 times 2” line. “Twelve?” Fucking moron. I love him.
He sort of became a crybaby after that, which might have been annoying, except I think he pulls it off. Around the same time, he started to have (pardon my language) unexplainable rizz.
Anyway, he sort of sat in that silly, crybaby, idiot, ladies man, spot for a long time. His mom died, but that episode didn’t do anything for his development at all, so he was sort of just done developing. That’s fine, I think the spot they had him in was fine, he’s a great character and still has potential the way he is.
Enter: Season 26
It’s almost like the people behind South Park were unsatisfied with the characters whose names had been dragged through the mud before. They couldn’t live with just the blood of Stan, Kyle, Cartman, Jimmy, To(l)k(i)en, Randy, Gerald and Garrison. They needed more, so they looked to Clyde.
His first appearance was okay, because he was just a moron again. Cupid Ye (S26 E1), where he was one of the first people to ask Kyle if he ran Hollywood.
In Deep Learning (S26 E4), he was the one who introduced Stan to ChatGPT. He dislikes Bebe, or at least how much she texts him. He’s a little bit bitter and old, because of how he resents his girlfriend. This is bad, but he still has some of the elements of Clyde that I love love love. I like how he’s still afraid of Bebe finding out, almost like he’s scared if her. Him trying to be smooth is also very funny. Still though, there’s elements of him that aren’t as awesome in that episode.
Then comes DikinBaus Hotdogs (S26 E5). He’s sort of an annoying, unambitious, Gen-Z stereotype. He only has a couple lines, but in the scene he’s in he’s just sitting on his phone, talking about how he doesn’t want to work and stuff. This is bad, because it marks a weird shift in Clyde that only took a couple episodes to happen. This also sort of marks another weird shift in the attitude of the show where they hate Gen-Z. I’m worried Clyde might sort of become a talking point for that, which sucks because he’s such a silly little guy.
Also he’s not a member of Gen-Z. He was either 8 in 1997, which would make him a Millennial, or he’s 10 in 2023, which would make him Gen Alpha. That honestly just makes the whole thing even stupider.
Final thoughts:
I’m nervous about him, and if they will turn him in to a main character for the show, sidelining one (or more) of the main four in the process, just to suck. It’s happened before, and it would really tarnish his “legacy”.
Anyway, Happy Mother’s Day!

CONSIDER they totally got wine drunk one night and spent like 6 hours talking about how they would each pull off the coolest prison break known to man. Shawn somehow got the layout of the local prison then Juliet called him a coward and pulled up a map of the state penitentiary. There were several whiteboards and rudimentary sketches. They still have the binder they made. It’s on their fucking mantle. Juliet scrapbooked the shit out of it.

Thinking about that bit from Mother 3 where Kumatora defends Duster from his asshole dad and everything that led up to it:
"You know, you shouldn't keep calling your own kid a moron. Because if he really is a moron, he wouldn't understand anyway."
That line hit me hard when I first played through that scene. Rarely do I get genuinely angry at characters in video games, but Wess absolutely infuriated me throughout the chapter. He sets Duster up for failure by telling him "you'll know it when you see it" in regards to the item he's been sent to retrieve, then gets angry when Duster inevitably brings back the wrong thing (to the point of physically breaking said item, which visibly stresses out Duster).
He continually berates Duster the rest of the journey through the castle, calling him a moron and even a failure. When Kumatora steps in to defend Duster, Wess has no response. It's not until Duster does something right in Wess's eyes that he "takes it all back". Even though Duster's more than proved himself by that point, Wess stays hung up on one mistake and will not let Duster forget it.
Duster is not a moron. He's extremely aware of everything his dad says, and understands what he means by it.
And despite supposedly taking it all back, and after his son being missing for three years, he calls him a moron one last time.
It's quite a light insult for a game with so many dark themes, but it's a frighteningly realistic depiction of what some parents are like. Slowly wearing you down with petty insults and mockery until you don't have the confidence to defend yourself. Then give you the barest of compliments when you do something "right".

Boston cutting the legs out from under Sand and Ray might actually be what ends up giving them a fighting chance to develop something real in the future (which is a little funny cause it 100% wasn't his intent, his feelings were just hurt and he wanted to make everyone else hurt too). His little temper tantrum, and Ray's response to damn near start chugging from the bottle, may have finally opened Sand's eyes to the fact that Ray isn't in a good place and it actually does have nothing to do with him. Ray just isn't currently capable of giving Sand what he wants. I think he can be, I think he'll even want to be at some point, but right now he isn't and doesn't even want to be.
Ray has to realize it's not about choosing Mew or Sand or anyone else. He has to choose himself. It'll probably take awhile for him to understand that because of his addictions and mental issues, but if he does, and if he puts in real work to better himself for him, that's when Sand and Ray can come together and start to form something real. Because anything they tried to form now, whether Boston acts an ass or not, was never going to last.

To be honest, stardew valley has me in such a chokehold. It always has, even before the 1.6.
In such a way that my brain wants to smash my hyperfixation into it. So late at night I'll be awake thinking of this stardew/south park mashup.
Call that bad boy Star Park AU.
But no brain! Bad! We already have too much going on! You have a Secret Soulmate AU. Fantasy AU, A Cowboy AU story staring Kenny that's still in the outline phase, and these one shots!
(Look at the tags to watch me descent into madness)
#like C'mon#it would be so cute and wholesome#ya know#everything south park isn't#its not my fault I think about me and my friends ocs starting a little farm together#i got one friend I rp with#we smash everything into our stardew rp#it ain't even really stardew besides like the layout of the town#I could write something like that up#like Stan and his family are already “farmers”#the heart event where he tells you he fucking hates it#but next heart event he confesses he's starting to associate farming with you#and now...maybe its not so bad?#COME ON#Kenny taking Karen to see your animals and falling in love with the way you're so gentle with her#Kyle finding you passed out in the mines and scolding you for being careless#but he's patching you up while he does it!!!?#Cartman demanding you bring him crops from your farm because#“everyone elses crops taste like dirt and ball sweat! at least I can stomach yours.”#(its the sweetest thing hes ever said tbh)#tweek having his little coffee shop set up there#he gets away from his parents and moves out to the valley because its quiet!#Craig moves out there to study the stars because they're so clear he can almost see all of them without a telescope#Clyde is JUST Alex and you cant change my mind#after the death of his mother he goes to live with his grandparents#Bebe is like a mix of Haley and Emily!#her events would be you helping her get her outfit designs off the ground and using her photography skills to have you model them#Wendy's whole thing would her being the mayors assistant but over heart events you make her believe in herself#and she becomes mayor; fuck you lewis you old fuck#shhh its a secret

A lot of Mother 1's themes would come across a lot stronger if it got the remake it absolutely deserves, but even with the dogwater NES graphics and simplistic dialogue, meeting Lloyd for the first time is so bittersweet to me.
You go through the school hearing about this kid Lloyd that everyone seems to hate for no good reason, and when you finally meet him on the roof he's in a garbage can. Of his own volition. The fact that spending all his free time at school in a bin is preferable to dealing with his classmates is just... you don't ever see the full extent of the bullying, but the implications are pretty freaking sad.
And the fact he just doesn't trust anyone his age anymore. He's got no reason to believe Ninten wants to hurt him, but he's only convinced once Ninten brings him a bottle rocket to show interest in being friends (thankfully Lloyd's bullies never learned the art of manipulative bullying it seems).
Ninten and Lloyd's friendship is predominantly shown through implication on account of Ninten not really having dialogue, but you can tell how much that one gesture of kindness meant to Lloyd, as he is without question his most loyal friend throughout the journey (a journey Lloyd had no obligation to come on, I hasten to add. And even when he's no longer part of the group that doesn't stop him coming to rescue them).
I know it's just a video game, but like I said in the tags of my post about Duster and Wess, there are people like this out in the world. Both people like Lloyd and the bullies he has to deal with. And people like Ninten, willing to offer even the smallest kindness because they believe people deserve it. Earthbound is full of weird and eccentric characters, but it can be incredibly grounded and realistic when it wants to be.
