#I miss Anne Heche

Yesterday night, my personal theologian organized our last "virtual movie night" of 2023. We have had two different "cycles": one dedicated to Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart, and our most recent one, where we watched John Wayne movies. We do that over Streamyard, discuss the movie afterwards as if we were in the same room (instead of living in different cities) for about an hour or two, then we go to sleep.

Yesterday's movie wasn't part of any of the cycles, though. It was The Third Miracle, by Agnieszka Holland, with Ed Harris, Anne Heche (oh, my goddess, how beautiful and talented she was) and Armin Mueller-Stahl. It was (as one might expect with a theologian) a gripping religious drama, with great acting, a really interesting script, and questions around faith and morality... Fascinating, really, as a talking point between a very rational conservative Catholic theologian and his ex-Catholic, very smart, quirky fiend who specializes in social studies and media analysis. A delight, really.

The things that nagged me during the whole time and I couldn't bring out with him were these:

One of the main themes was the painful opposition between institutional Good (the Church) and everyday faith (people who live in a failed world, but who believe in everyday saints). We obviously discussed this, but I wanted so bad to say "yeah, this is one of the main themes that makes me very interested in Good Omens, really, the difference between institutional goodness and the love of life that arrives while living amongst everyday people".

I'll spoil one of the points in the movie for this. Ed Harris is a priest. Anne Heche is a non-religious person. They start getting closer, and at one point they kiss, desperately. And then Ed Harris (with his beautiful and expressive blue eyes) leaves a very redheaded Anne Heche, parting with a kiss, because he has to go and fulfill his duty to the Church and to his faith. I should have cried. I might have screamed a little (we usually have our microphones off). Everything is Ineffable Partners coded in my head.

I have to mention again the opposition between "institutional Good" and "real Good". It is a central theme... and the character played by Armin Mueller-Stahl is awful in that sense (most of the archbishops in the movie are, really, but he is THE WORST). The feeling of "arch-authorities supposedly in charge of goodness being jerks" was other of those things where I urgently needed my theologian to have ANY SORT OF GOOD OMENS LITERACY, for someone's sake.

As that's not going to happen anytime soon, I brought this to you all, because I guess you will be interested in this sort of brainrot even when I'm talking about a 23 year old movie that no one has watched in years (but it's gooooooood! Painful, gritty, interesting....) because I can cross reference Good Omens with oh, so many things!

RIP Olivia Newton John, John Eastman, Anne Heche, Robin Griggs, and Denise Dowse

I was out sick last week and missed a bunch of celebrity deaths. Here is my combined remembrance:

Remembering Olivia Newton-John 1948-2022

Newton-John in Grease

Singer/actress Olivia Newton-John has died at 73. She was already established as a pop singer in the 70s when she was cast as Sandy in the 1978 film adaptation of Grease. It is one of the great nostalgic musicals of all time and Newton-John and co-star John Travolta made this timeless. She and Travolta reunited a few more times. It needs to be added that her version of “Over the Rainbow” appeared in John Woo’s Face/Off, one of Travolta’s best performances. But I digress. They teamed up for a Christmas album in 2012 as well.

The soundtrack to Grease was a massive hit. I got the vinyl in my collection. There are some pop standards on this and her songs are among the highlights. Her 1981 song “Physical” was one of the biggest hit songs of the 80s, spending 10 weeks at #1 and Billboard named it #1 of the 1980s. I remember her video for “Soul Kiss” in 1985 too.

Remembering John Eastman 1939-2022

Eastman and McCartney

Entertainment lawyer John Eastman has died at 83. He was the older brother of Linda McCartney. When Paul McCartney married Linda in 1969, John and his father Lee began representing Paul after The Beatles break-up. Paul recently paid tribute to his brother-in-law online.

Remembering Anne Heche 1969-2022

Sad news that about a week after a terrible car accident, actress Anne Heche has died at 53. She got a lot of attention in the 90s for being Ellen DeGeneres’s girlfriend during the time that she came out. But Heche was actually a good supporting actress. Notable performances include Walking and Talking,  Donnie Brasco, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Wag the Dog, Gus Van Sant’s remake of Psycho, the criminally underrated comedy Cedar Rapids, and Rampart. 

Shortly before I was an intern for Ted Demme (I was a location intern on Monument Ave and at his production company Spanky Pictures), Ted directed Anne in the “Manhattan Miracle” segment of the HBO anthology film SUBWAYStories: Tales from the Underground. It was almost a silent film, when Gregory Hines sees Anne on the opposite subway platform. Great segment of an underrated film!

Remembering Robin Griggs 1973-2022

Soap opera actress Robin Griggs has died at 49. I was not too familiar with her films, TV shows or soaps, but what got my attention about her is that she got her start as a teen on the Nickelodeon movie review show Rated K: For Kids by Kids.  I was into it at the very moment I was getting into movies and watching Siskel & Ebert, it was tweens and teens talking about movies in a way you could relate. I sent in fan letters and even hoped to get on the show as a critic one day. Once in a while I got a postcard back thanking me and one time I even was told my fan letter was selected in a contest and I won sneakers! I don’t really remember Robin on the show, so I think she was on the show in the very beginning.

Remembering Denise Dowse 1958-2022

Dowse as Tyrone’s Mother in Requiem for a Dream

Actress Denise Dowse has died at 64. She actually got her start as an FBI agent in a 1989 episode of ALF. Also worth noting that she appeared in two separate episode of in Seinfeld 1992 and 1994. Her biggest role was as Ms. Teasley  Beverly Hills, 90210 on from 1990 to 2000. Other notable roles include Requiem for a Dream and Ray.

Did you hear that Anne Heche died? She played Kate Brennan in Season 6 and the premiere of Season 7 of Chicago P.D. She was involved in two car accidents and became brain dead a few days after the accident with significant burns all over her body. I'm sorry to hear that she's gone. She'll be missed and I hope she rests in peace.

I did see this. I was definitely shocked and saddened by the news. For those who have not seen yet, you can read the TVLine Article. Actress Anne Heche who played Kate Brennan passed away this morning after a car accident. She was a wonderful actress and will surely be missed by family, friends, and those who enjoyed her on the screen. May she Rest In Peace.

Robyn Griggs, Famous Actress of ‘Another World,’ ‘One Life to Live,’ Passed away at 49

The actress Robyn Griggs Wiley, best known for appearing in soap operas including Another World and One Life to Live, has passed away. She was 49.

On Saturday, news of her passing appeared on her official Facebook page. "With a heavy heart, I am devastated to report Robyn's passing," the post said. She would, however, like us to keep in mind that she is no longer in pain as well as the pleasant recollections. In 2020, Robyn received a cancer diagnosis. In One Life to Live, which made its April 1991 debut and ran for six episodes, Robyn Griggs Wiley played Stephanie Hobart. After that, she appeared in Another World for two years as Maggie Cory. Her birthday is April 30, 1973. On Saturday, August 13, the actress' Facebook page posted the news, writing, "With a heavy heart, I am devastated to announce Robyn's loss. She would, however, like us to keep in mind that she is no longer in pain and the pleasant recollections." "I'll never forget how accepting she was of me helping her share her tale and how open she was to telling it," they continued. In order to accomplish so, she wished to share her tale and aid others. I felt privileged to do so. My friend, you will be missed and will always make me smile.

Griggs, who received her stage four diagnosis in 2020, was transparent about it. She informed her fans of the news in a Facebook post from last month, saying she had four new tumours. "Sadly, I have discovered 4 new tumours. Two new tumours on my liver, a huge tumour on my right side lymph node, and one on my abdominal muscle. I'm in pain, and I have chemo on Monday morning. I advised them to do whatever it takes. I'm ready for battle. I'll feel awful—very uncomfortable, queasy, etc.—but who knows? Maybe it may help with the discomfort. You can't be sure. Please continue to offer up prayers. Hugs to everyone!", she said.

The actress and her fellow Another World actor Anne Heche, who unfortunately passed away last week, have been in the hearts of their soap show coworkers. Both women were recalled by Alla Korot, who played Jenna in Another World from 1991 to 1992. "Robyn was always cheerful and kind. She described a wonderful actress who was also modest and grounded", according to Digital Journal. She left early for paradise because she was exceptionally special. Robyn and Anne Heche both away so young was a terrible week. Career Griggs, who was born in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, started her acting career as a young child when she portrayed Molly in the film Annie and served as the host of the Nickelodeon children's programme Rated K. She rose to prominence for her portrayals of young adults in the daytime soap operas One Life to Live (1991–1992) as Stephanie Hobart—for which she was nominated for Best Young Actress in a Daytime Series at the 14th Youth in Film Awards—and Another World (1993–1955) as Maggie Cory. American actress Anne Heche Dies At 53 

Actor Anne Heche died on Friday, after succumbing to injuries from a car crash days earlier, according to friends. Her friend, Nancy Davis, revealed the news in a memorial post on Instagram, writing: “Heaven has a new Angel. My loving, kind, fun, endearing and beautiful friend Anne Heche went to heaven. I will miss her terribly and cherish all the beautiful memories we have shared.”

Six Days Seven Nights

Feeling pretty rough after getting my 2nd vax shot so I decided to treat myself to a terrible movie just because it has Harrison Ford and Temuera Morrison and I like a good shipwreck story. So how it was it, you ask?

What is it with 90s movies where smart girls all have small breasts (and are insecure about it) and full figured women are bimbos.

Other notable 90s references: Kmart, doctors handing out Xanax like candy, flip phones with antennas.

Harrison Ford acts drunk they way I played a drunk college student in a campus police skit without ever having been drunk.

Please David Schwimmer, do not say "cream me up" in reference to sunscreen. PLEASE.

My first purse was one of those nylon macrame things Anne Heche carries.

Temuera Morrison plays a pirate. His pirate crew includes former and future co-stars Cliff Curtis and Danny Trejo. The pirates seem like they're having more fun than anyone else in this movie.

At once point the pirates are conversing in another language and according to the IMDB trivia page TM and CC were discussing what to make for dinner in Maori :D

The pirates are seen taking over a yacht and before he murders the owner TM takes a swig of champagne and then pours some of it over his head. There's no reason for it but it's important to me that you know this.

Seriously I think Harrison Ford heard "Hawaii" and "You can fly a plane" and was like "yeah I can sleepwalk through that."

Guilty kissing in the surf. So many flavors. Salt. Sand. Guilt.

Okay, the "I wanna kiss you" moment was pretty hot. HF can get it, as per usual.

HF's character admits to being over 50 but whispers his real age to Anne Heche even though there's no one else around. 50 is the max age for male romantic leads, apparently.

The scene where they fix the plane is actually pretty cool? Someone had fun figuring out how they could rig up pulleys and dig out trenches to make a lift.

Predictable ending. HF runs to the airport, thinks he's missed her. His entire wardrobe for this movie cost about $8.

DWTS Season 29 Week 1

OK so despite everything that happened with the show’s production, I’m watching this show, because dance still takes my mind off the various stresses in life. Obviously I hate how Tom and Erin were forced off the show, but I won’t begrudge Tyra of that. I think she’s a decent host. Next, I was pleasantly surprised to see Derek Hough back as a judge. I knew Len was stuck in England and couldn’t return to do the show, and there were rumours Derek would replace him but I didn’t think they were true. Scores are CAI-Derek-Bruno.

I honestly wasn’t expecting there to even be a DWTS season given the pandemic. I’m not entirely convinced it’s a good idea to have one. They have social distancing measures in place but ehhhhh idk. But again I’m glad to have something to distract me from other shit.

Opening was decent enough considering they were clearly avoiding group rehearsals and filming. Interesting that apparently Ray Leeper choreographed it because I only know him as a jazz choreographer.

AJ McLean and Cheryl Burke - Jive I didn’t recognise bald AJ at first. I thought he was a soccer player. Based on this one dance, he has a lot to work on technique-wise. But with Cheryl as a partner he could be a dark horse. Song was not good for jive though. 6-6-6 T18

Chrishell Stause and Gleb Shevchenko - Tango I find Selling Sunset cringe as a show but have nothing personal against Chrishell. She looked very wobbly on her feet. Like a baby deer taking its first steps. I think she has potential, but don’t know if Gleb is the pro do help her reach that. Height and looks wise I see why they were put together. I just don’t trust Gleb as a pro. Wow those scores were harsh. I wasn’t expecting that. 4-5-4 T13

Vernon Davis and Peta Murgatroyd - Foxtrot Man has footwork, I’ll give him that. I’m talking about his touchdown dance, that is. But his foxtrot was nothing to sniff at either. A lot of the issues I saw were pretty commonplace for athletic men getting foxtrot early on, like smoothing out his extensions and getting more glidey steps. Thought he deserved maybe 1 more point. 5-6-6 T17

Anne Heche and Keo Motsepe - Cha cha cha OMG I love her sass. Similar problem to Chrishell in that her steps didn’t always look secure, though cha cha is more forgiving a dance than tango. 6-6-6 T18

Jeannie Mai and Brandon Armstrong - Salsa She has potential if she can control her energy. I hope Brandon gets a good run with her because I think they could be another potent pair. 6-6-6 T18

Jesse Metcalfe and Sharna Burgess - Quickstep Props to him for tackling the quickstep right out the gate. If you wanna be sexy, that is not the pattern to wear. Also, quickstep isn’t a dance you smoulder in. He looked kinda intense and maybe not enjoying himself as much as he could have. He could be decent, though. And welcome back Sharna! 6-6-6 T18

Skai Jackson and Alan Bersten - Tango I’ve never seen any of her shows but she seems like such a nice girl. Carries herself really well. Looks like she and Alan get along well too. Tango could have used more travelling and she looked a bit tense at times. But she can become good. Weird music for the dance style. 7-7-7 T21

Kaitlyn Bristowe and Artem Chigvintsev - Cha cha cha One of the strongest dances at this point of the night. She looked the least Bambi-like and had good turn out but it was not consistent. Like Derek said, she felt a bit “safe”. Welcome back, Artem! 6-7-7 T20

Nev Schulman and Jenna Johnson - Foxtrot Haha he’s so adorkable. Also random, but I know Catfish as ‘the show that was on before Teen Wolf’. He has lots of potential and could also become a fan favourite with his affable personality. His dance felt oddly short compared to the others though? Oh and I dunno if it’s Jenna’s hair or how she did her makeup this week but she looks so pretty like this. 7-7-6 T20

Johnny Weir and Britt Stewart - Cha cha cha Bit like Skai, felt a bit tense at times in the dance. Some actions were a bit hard-hitting. Those eyes are crying out for some matching purple eyeshadow. Nice to see Britt being a pro. 6-6-6 T18

Justina Machado and Sasha Farber - Cha cha cha Best cha cha yet. She was nicely grounded but still energetic. Hit some good lines too. I can picture her being good at ballroom styles as well so she’s one to watch. 7-7-7 T21

Charles Oakley and Emma Slater - Salsa Emma said he has a natural rhythm in training so I wonder if he got into his head in the performance because I wasn’t seeing that. Other problems - flat footedness and lack of hip action we’ve seen before in tall athletes. 4-4-4 T12

Monica Aldama and Val Chmerkovskiy - Foxtrot She has a natural grace. I think she didn’t get into hold quite right initially so they looked a bit awkward for a while. Also I wonder when CAI will realise that no one cares about her lifting rules anymore. They all stopped caring over ten seasons ago. Thought her score would be a little higher. 6-7-6 T19

Nelly and Daniella Karagach - Salsa Nelly seems like such a fun, chill guy to hang out with. I feel like he was thinking quite hard about the dance and not fully immersing himself in it. He looked kinda reserved and trepid. He got all the steps though. Bruno was a little generous there though. Congrats to Daniella for her first dance as a pro partner! 5-5-6 T16

Carole Baskin and Pasha Pashkov - Paso Doble Throwing someone a paso on week 1? But the song works I guess. I feel like we’ve seen that cage like 5 times. Clearly this dance was just playing up to the whole tiger thing rather than actually trying to be a paso. 4-4-3 T11

Ok well. This show wasn’t bad. I miss Tom and Erin but I can get on board with Tyra. There aren’t any standout frontrunners yet, but a few low-hanging fruit. I think we’ll have a better picture once everyone has done one ballroom and one latin style.

This movie is a 10/10 banger.

It occurred to me while I was watching this movie that I have seen it so many times in my life that I knew exactly what was coming next in almost every scene, and honestly, I haven't watched it in full in easily a decade. But my brain still remembered the DETAILS.

I like disaster movies, okay, and for some reason I like this one a lot.

Plot:

Here we are in beautiful 90s Los Angeles, where everyone is awakened by an earthquake, but nobody really cares because earthquakes are pretty par for the course in LA.

Tommy Lee Jones works for… the disaster department?  I can't remember.  Don Cheadle is his right-hand man, and Gaby Hoffmann is his daughter and she's a bit of a pill.  Teenagers, right?

Nobody takes much notice of the earthquake at first until a bunch of city workers burn to death in a drain under the city, and TLJ rolls up on the scene all boss-like, but then a bunch of other old white dudes turn up thinking THEY'RE the boss – and then in rolls seismologist Anne Heche to tell them that something serious is going on.

But she's a woman so wtf does she know, right?

Anyway, TLJ is an optimist in this movie, and while he acknowledges that the city workers burned to death in a horrible, gruesome way, he wants to go down there to ensure that nothing is going on.  So he and another dude climb down in the drain and of course it's super hot down there (gee, I wonder what's super hot and comes out of the centre of the earth?), and they almost die, and he's like, "Maybe there is something going on," and she's like, "Yeah, I'm telling you there is," and he's like, "Well, best not to alarm the city."

So because everyone DICKS AROUND, Anne Heche is like, "I need to get me into that sewer," and her friend is like, "We'll just sneak in, fuck the man, girl power, etc etc." So they hatch a scheme to sneak into the sewer early in the morning to take samples.

Well.  That goes awry, doesn't it?  Of course while they're in there they find a big crack in the tunnel, and the friend is squatting over the giant crack in the tunnel to "take samples" when a massive earthquake strikes – timing is EVERYTHING, and if there's one thing I know about volcanoes from movies, it's that they have impeccable timing –and she promptly falls to her death into a gaping chasm below the city of Los Angeles.

Anyway, this earthquake is MASSIVE, and TLJ grabs Gaby Hoffmann and is like, "I have to get to work," so he's driving down Wilshire Boulevard (fuck, do I know LA or what?) when all of a sudden FIREBALLS START SHOOTING FROM THE LA BREA TAR PITS.

You know it's a bad morning commute when fireballs start shooting out of tar pits.

So TLJ has no idea wtf is going on; he's on the phone to Don Cheadle freaking out; people are getting blasted with fireballs in their cars, everything is catching on fire, yada yada yada.  And I mean, despite the fact that it is literally raining fire, and that lava is exploding from the tar pits, everyone is still completely bewildered as to what this glowing red stuff is.

This sequence is intense because two firefighters get melted the fuck to death in a fire truck (you see, in this movie, the lava actually makes the cars MELT), and there's lava bombs, and then TLJ and Anne Heche get cornered by the lava whilst saving a homeless dude and have to be lifted out by the ladder on a fire truck, and when they escape that TLJ is still calling the lava "whatever this stuff is" and he finally gets it when Anne Heche practically screams at him, "IT'S LAVA!"

Like I mean you don't know what it is

How can you not know what it is

Even the newscasters are like, "It's LAVA?!" like they've never heard of it before.

So this leads me to wonder – is this movie set in an alternate universe where only people with specialised degrees have ever heard of lava and the rest of the world is clueless?  It is the only explanation.

MEANWHILE, under the city, the nice man who runs the subway system melts to death in a lava flow in possibly the most horrifying part of this movie.  It haunts my nightmares.

Anyway, back above ground, they eventually build this barricade to stop the flow of lava, and then Anne Heche is all, "You know there's still more lava right?" And TLJ is like, "We stopped it." And she's like, "YOU'RE AN IDIOT," but in a nice, non-confrontational seismologist kind of way.

Then it turns out, lo and behold, that just barricading lava is not enough, because it has a subway to travel through, and it's heading right for the hospital where they've been sending allthe injured people.  Like I mean great idea to completely back up one hospital when I'm sure there's more than just one hospital in the greater Los Angeles area (there is more than one hospital, right?).

So they now have half an hour to come up with a plan to stop the lava from starting to flow again in another part of town, and TLJ is like, "We'll knock down this nice new building to funnel it into the storm drains," and everyone is like, "half an hour is really not enough time to do that, dude," and he's just like, "GET IT DONE AND STOP QUESTIONING ME."

And then, I guess because Anne Heche has exceeded her usefulness at this point, he gives her the practically impossible task of locating Gaby Hoffmann in amongst the literally hundreds of people in triage in the hospital car park.  You know, because she's a woman.

ALSO – I'm not sure if this movie was hinting at a romantic connection between Anne Heche and TLJ, or… I don't know.  I'm still confused.  When I was a kid, I thought it was a romantic connection, but now I'm watching it and thinking that he is way too old for her.  Anne Heche was 28 when this came out and TLJ was FIFTY-ONE, so I'm revising my previously held belief that it was a romantic connection.  It is simply a friendship with a bit of banter and flirtation.

So the lava erupts out of the ground and everyone is getting fucked up, and then they knock the building down, dam the lava so it flows into the storm drain, and everybody cheers.

I do not know how scientifically accurate ANY of this – I'm guessing not much – but I do find this movie way more entertaining than Dante's Peak.  I mean, it's just an hour and a half of TLJ yelling at people and being the only one to come up with any solutions to the problems.

I miss these big 90s disaster movies, like, where are the fucking disaster movies in 2019?  Or is the world so fucked up already that we don't need them?

Plot:  A team of highly trained operatives find themselves trapped inside an isolated military compound after its AI is suddenly shut down. The crew begins to experience strange and horrific phenomena as they attempt to uncover what killed the previous team.

Why I Watched It: The trailer and John Stockwell directs really good B-Movies, solid workman like director and of course Wesley Snipes.

How I Watched It: Amazon Prime Canada

Random Thoughts: I’m shocked at the IMDB score, I always think the score is higher on IMDB cause it’s easier to stuff the ballot box if you will and I’ve seen so many bad to really bad movies get in the 5′s so to see this film get a 3.8 is silly I can only think the people who rated got something they weren’t excepting.

Colby Lopez is the real name of WWE wrestler(Superstar) Seth Rollins.

What I Liked: Right off the bat this movie surprised me for a couple of reasons, it’s not a brainless action movie, and it’s not as type cast as you would think, both Heche and Snipes play different than we’re use to.

The set up is good, a team is missing in this new state of the art kind of prison but not it’s for interrogation, there’s places like this all over the world but this was the first one and something has gone wrong so a team lead by Snipes gets the creator, who of course has a tragic backstory, and they go try to figure out what’s happened.  It’s set up like a horror film and I guess it is, at times it’s spooky and i’ll give the film credit has it took me off guard cause the story wasn’t what I thought it would be and it goes in different places.

The cast is a mixed bag, Snipes is good but like I said different, no real fighting to speak of and he’s the leader but he doesn’t say a whole lot surprisingly Dave Annable is the lead, he’s the guy trying to figure what the why and how.  Heche is solid and I give her credit this was casting against type cause I think this is her first role as a solider and kind of bad ass. 

Director John Stockwell does a nice job of tone and also keeping the pace and atmosphere up, the film keeps going forward and keeps the mystery getting weirder and weirder. The film as a couple of twists and turns and a couple to be honest I didn’t see coming and the film kinds of changes around the two thirds mark and then everything kind of falls into place and we see who’s good and who’s not.

What I Didn’t Like: The plot is fine but the answers we get are goofy as hell, they keep the tension up as best they can and there’s a couple of nice intense scenes but the why and how is pure cheese, I kind of liked it but they could have done better.

Once we get half way through the cliches begin to pop up, the side characters are all stock military types, mostly boring and of course a lot of bickering goes on, and there’s a couple of plot holes that are fairly big.  The ending was a little anti-climatic.

Final Thoughts: Wasn’t amazing but I liked it, it was different and well made so I think it’s worth a look.
