Worst Trade Ever
We are a sports dominated culture like no culture before us. I include myself. A day isn’t complete for me in the Spring, Summer or Fall without an update on how the Phillies did. Ditto for the Fall and Winter in relation to the Philadelphia Eagles. Both those major sports sometime have so-called “Blockbuster Trades.” So maybe this metaphor makes sense to many. Here’s my version of the worst…

Suffering Servant: The Man Who was Nailed Down to be Lifted Up
Suffering Servant: The Man Who was Nailed Down to be Lifted Up
In 7 BC, Jerusalem had been living under the oppression of an occupying army for many years. Most folks probably hoped for a glorious Messiah rather than a suffering servant. From today’s vantage point it may not be that obvious, but it stands to reason when first Century Hebrew people read the Scriptures, they looked for a mighty Messiah who would overthrow the hated Romans. Deliverance for Jerusalem
1 Awake! awake! put on your strength, O Zion; put on your beautiful robes, O Jerusalem, the holy town: for from now there will never again come into you the unclean and those without circumcision. 2 Make yourself clean from the dust; up! and take the seat of your power, O Jerusalem: the bands of your neck are loose, O prisoned daughter of Zion. 3 For the Lord says, You were given for nothing, and you will be made free without price. 4 For the Lord God says, My people went down at first into Egypt, to get a place for themselves there: and the Assyrian put a cruel yoke on them without cause. 5 Now then, what have I here? says the Lord, for my people are taken away without cause; they are made waste and give cries of sorrow, says the Lord, and all the day the nations put shame on my name. 6 For this cause I will make my name clear to my people; in that day they will be certain that it is my word which comes to them; see, here am I. 7 How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of him who comes with good news, who gives word of peace, saying that salvation is near; who says to Zion, Your God is ruling! 8 The voice of your watchmen! their voices are loud in song together; for they will see him, eye to eye, when the Lord comes back to Zion. 9 Give sounds of joy, make melody together, waste places of Jerusalem: for the Lord has given comfort to his people, he has taken up the cause of Jerusalem. 10 The Lord has let his holy arm be seen by the eyes of all nations; and all the ends of the earth will see the salvation of our God. 11 Away! away! go out from there, touching no unclean thing; go out from among her; be clean, you who take up the vessels of the Lord. 12 For you will not go out suddenly, and you will not go in flight: for the Lord will go before you, and the God of Israel will come after you to keep you. 13 See, my servant will do well in his undertakings, he will be honoured, and lifted up, and be very high. 14 As peoples were surprised at him, And his face was not beautiful, so as to be desired: his face was so changed by disease as to be unlike that of a man, and his form was no longer that of the sons of men. 15 So will nations give him honour; kings will keep quiet because of him: for what had not been made clear to them they will see; and they will give their minds to what had not come to their ears. — Isaiah 52 | Bible in Basic English (BBE) The Bible in Basic English is in the public domain. Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted.
As many were astonished at you— his appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance, and his form beyond that of the children of mankind—
so shall he sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths because of him, for that which has not been told them they see, and that which they have not heard they understand.
Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people?
And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth.
Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; yet he bore the sin of many, and makes intercession for the transgressors.

7th April >> Mass Readings (Except USA)
Good Friday
(Liturgical Colour: Red: A(1))
(There is no Mass today. The readings given here are used in the afternoon celebration of the Lord's Passion)
First Reading
Isaiah 52:13-53:12
The servant of the Lord, an expiatory Sacrifice.
See, my servant will prosper,
he shall be lifted up, exalted, rise to great heights.
As the crowds were appalled on seeing him
– so disfigured did he look
that he seemed no longer human –
so will the crowds be astonished at him,
and kings stand speechless before him;
for they shall see something never told
and witness something never heard before:
‘Who could believe what we have heard,
and to whom has the power of the Lord been revealed?’
Like a sapling he grew up in front of us,
like a root in arid ground.
Without beauty, without majesty we saw him,
no looks to attract our eyes;
a thing despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows and familiar with suffering,
a man to make people screen their faces;
he was despised and we took no account of him.
And yet ours were the sufferings he bore,
ours the sorrows he carried.
But we, we thought of him as someone punished,
struck by God, and brought low.
Yet he was pierced through for our faults,
crushed for our sins.
On him lies a punishment that brings us peace,
and through his wounds we are healed.
We had all gone astray like sheep,
each taking his own way,
and the Lord burdened him
with the sins of all of us.
Harshly dealt with, he bore it humbly,
he never opened his mouth,
like a lamb that is led to the slaughter-house,
like a sheep that is dumb before its shearers
never opening its mouth.
By force and by law he was taken;
would anyone plead his cause?
Yes, he was torn away from the land of the living;
for our faults struck down in death.
They gave him a grave with the wicked,
a tomb with the rich,
though he had done no wrong
and there had been no perjury in his mouth.
The Lord has been pleased to crush him with suffering.
If he offers his life in atonement,
he shall see his heirs, he shall have a long life
and through him what the Lord wishes will be done.
His soul’s anguish over
he shall see the light and be content.
By his sufferings shall my servant justify many,
taking their faults on himself.
Hence I will grant whole hordes for his tribute,
he shall divide the spoil with the mighty,
for surrendering himself to death
and letting himself be taken for a sinner,
while he was bearing the faults of many
and praying all the time for sinners.

Responsorial Psalm
Psalm 30(31):2,6,12-13,15-17,25
R/ Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.
In you, O Lord, I take refuge.
Let me never be put to shame.
In your justice, set me free,
Into your hands I commend my spirit.
It is you who will redeem me, Lord.
R/ Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.
In the face of all my foes
I am a reproach,
an object of scorn to my neighbours
and of fear to my friends.
R/ Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.
Those who see me in the street
run far away from me.
I am like a dead man, forgotten in men’s hearts,
like a thing thrown away.
R/ Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.
But as for me, I trust in you, Lord;
I say: ‘You are my God.
My life is in your hands, deliver me
from the hands of those who hate me.
R/ Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.
Let your face shine on your servant.
Save me in your love.’
Be strong, let your heart take courage,
all who hope in the Lord.
R/ Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.

Second Reading
Hebrews 4:14-16,5:7-9
The Lord burdened him with the sins of all of us.
Since in Jesus, the Son of God, we have the supreme high priest who has gone through to the highest heaven, we must never let go of the faith that we have professed. For it is not as if we had a high priest who was incapable of feeling our weaknesses with us; but we have one who has been tempted in every way that we are, though he is without sin. Let us be confident, then, in approaching the throne of grace, that we shall have mercy from him and find grace when we are in need of help.
During his life on earth, he offered up prayer and entreaty, aloud and in silent tears, to the one who had the power to save him out of death, and he submitted so humbly that his prayer was heard. Although he was Son, he learnt to obey through suffering; but having been made perfect, he became for all who obey him the source of eternal salvation.

Gospel Acclamation
Philippians 2:8-9
Glory and praise to you, O Christ!
Christ was humbler yet,
even to accepting death, death on a cross.
But God raised him high
and gave him the name which is above all names.
Glory and praise to you, O Christ!

Gospel
John 18:1-19:42
The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Key: N. Narrator. ✠ Jesus. O. Other single speaker. C. Crowd, or more than one speaker.
N. Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kedron valley. There was a garden there, and he went into it with his disciples. Judas the traitor knew the place well, since Jesus had often met his disciples there, and he brought the cohort to this place together with a detachment of guards sent by the chief priests and the Pharisees, all with lanterns and torches and weapons. Knowing everything that was going to happen to him, Jesus then came forward and said,
✠ Who are you looking for?
N. They answered,
C. Jesus the Nazarene.
N. He said,
✠ I am he.
N. Now Judas the traitor was standing among them. When Jesus said, ‘I am he’, they moved back and fell to the ground. He asked them a second time,
✠ Who are you looking for?
N. They said,
C. Jesus the Nazarene.
N. Jesus replied,
✠ I have told you that I am he. If I am the one you are looking for, let these others go.
N. This was to fulfil the words he had spoken, ‘Not one of those you gave me have I lost.’
Simon Peter, who carried a sword, drew it and wounded the high priest’s servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus. Jesus said to Peter,
✠ Put your sword back in its scabbard; am I not to drink the cup that the Father has given me?
N. The cohort and its captain and the Jewish guards seized Jesus and bound him. They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that year. It was Caiaphas who had suggested to the Jews, ‘It is better for one man to die for the people.’
Simon Peter, with another disciple, followed Jesus. This disciple, who was known to the high priest, went with Jesus into the high priest’s palace, but Peter stayed outside the door. So the other disciple, the one known to the high priest, went out, spoke to the woman who was keeping the door and brought Peter in. The maid on duty at the door said to Peter,
O. Aren’t you another of that man’s disciples?
N. He answered,
O. I am not.
N. Now it was cold, and the servants and guards had lit a charcoal fire and were standing there warming themselves; so Peter stood there too, warming himself with the others.
The high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching. Jesus answered,
✠ I have spoken openly for all the world to hear; I have always taught in the synagogue and in the Temple where all the Jews meet together: I have said nothing in secret. But why ask me? Ask my hearers what I taught: they know what I said.
N. At these words, one of the guards standing by gave Jesus a slap in the face, saying,
O. Is that the way to answer the high priest?
N. Jesus replied,
✠ If there is something wrong in what I said, point it out; but if there is no offence in it, why do you strike me?
N. Then Annas sent him, still bound, to Caiaphas the high priest.
As Simon Peter stood there warming himself, someone said to him,
O. Aren’t you another of his disciples?
N. He denied it, saying,
O. I am not.
N. One of the high priest’s servants, a relation of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, said,
O. Didn’t I see you in the garden with him?
N. Again Peter denied it; and at once a cock crew.
They then led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was now morning. They did not go into the Praetorium themselves or they would be defiled and unable to eat the passover. So Pilate came outside to them and said,
O. What charge do you bring against this man?
N. They replied,
C. If he were not a criminal, we should not be handing him over to you.
N. Pilate said,
O. Take him yourselves, and try him by your own Law.
N. The Jews answered,
C. We are not allowed to put a man to death.
N. This was to fulfil the words Jesus had spoken indicating the way he was going to die.
So Pilate went back into the Praetorium and called Jesus to him, and asked,
O. Are you the king of the Jews?
N. Jesus replied,
✠ Do you ask this of your own accord, or have others spoken to you about me?
N. Pilate answered,
O. Am I a Jew? It is your own people and the chief priests who have handed you over to me: what have you done?
N. Jesus replied,
✠ Mine is not a kingdom of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my men would have fought to prevent my being surrendered to the Jews. But my kingdom is not of this kind.
N. Pilate said,
O. So you are a king, then?
N. Jesus answered,
✠ It is you who say it. Yes, I am a king. I was born for this, I came into the world for this: to bear witness to the truth; and all who are on the side of truth listen to my voice.
N. Pilate said,
O. Truth? What is that?
N. and with that he went out again to the Jews and said,
O. I find no case against him. But according to a custom of yours I should release one prisoner at the Passover; would you like me, then, to release the king of the Jews?
N. At this they shouted:
C. Not this man, but Barabbas.
N. Barabbas was a brigand.
Pilate then had Jesus taken away and scourged; and after this, the soldiers twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on his head, and dressed him in a purple robe. They kept coming up to him and saying,
C. Hail, king of the Jews!
N. and they slapped him in the face.
Pilate came outside again and said to them,
O. Look, I am going to bring him out to you to let you see that I find no case.
N. Jesus then came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said,
O. Here is the man.
N. When they saw him the chief priests and the guards shouted,
C. Crucify him! Crucify him!
N. Pilate said,
O. Take him yourselves and crucify him: I can find no case against him.
N. The Jews replied,
C. We have a Law, and according to that Law he ought to die, because he has claimed to be the Son of God.
N. When Pilate heard them say this his fears increased. Re-entering the Praetorium, he said to Jesus
O. Where do you come from?
N. But Jesus made no answer. Pilate then said to him,
O. Are you refusing to speak to me? Surely you know I have power to release you and I have power to crucify you?
N. Jesus replied,
✠ You would have no power over me if it had not been given you from above; that is why the one who handed me over to you has the greater guilt.
N. From that moment Pilate was anxious to set him free, but the Jews shouted,
C. If you set him free you are no friend of Caesar’s; anyone who makes himself king is defying Caesar.
N. Hearing these words, Pilate had Jesus brought out, and seated himself on the chair of judgement at a place called the Pavement, in Hebrew Gabbatha. It was Passover Preparation Day, about the sixth hour. Pilate said to the Jews,
O. Here is your king.
N. They said,
C. Take him away, take him away! Crucify him!
N. Pilate said,
O. Do you want me to crucify your king?
N. The chief priests answered,
C. We have no king except Caesar.
N. So in the end Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.
They then took charge of Jesus, and carrying his own cross he went out of the city to the place of the skull or, as it was called in Hebrew, Golgotha, where they crucified him with two others, one on either side with Jesus in the middle. Pilate wrote out a notice and had it fixed to the cross; it ran: ‘Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews.’ This notice was read by many of the Jews, because the place where Jesus was crucified was not far from the city, and the writing was in Hebrew, Latin and Greek. So the Jewish chief priests said to Pilate,
C. You should not write ‘King of the Jews,’ but ‘This man said: “I am King of the Jews.”’
N. Pilate answered,
O. What I have written, I have written.
N. When the soldiers had finished crucifying Jesus they took his clothing and divided it into four shares, one for each soldier. His undergarment was seamless, woven in one piece from neck to hem; so they said to one another,
C. Instead of tearing it, let’s throw dice to decide who is to have it.
N. In this way the words of scripture were fulfilled:They shared out my clothing among them. They cast lots for my clothes.
This is exactly what the soldiers did.
Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. Seeing his mother and the disciple he loved standing near her, Jesus said to his mother,
✠ Woman, this is your son.
N. Then to the disciple he said,
✠ This is your mother.
N. And from that moment the disciple made a place for her in his home.
After this, Jesus knew that everything had now been completed, and to fulfil the scripture perfectly he said:
✠ I am thirsty.
N. A jar full of vinegar stood there, so putting a sponge soaked in the vinegar on a hyssop stick they held it up to his mouth. After Jesus had taken the vinegar he said,
✠ It is accomplished;
N. and bowing his head he gave up his spirit.
Here all kneel and pause for a short time.
It was Preparation Day, and to prevent the bodies remaining on the cross during the sabbath – since that sabbath was a day of special solemnity – the Jews asked Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken away. Consequently the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with him and then of the other. When they came to Jesus, they found he was already dead, and so instead of breaking his legs one of the soldiers pierced his side with a lance; and immediately there came out blood and water. This is the evidence of one who saw it – trustworthy evidence, and he knows he speaks the truth – and he gives it so that you may believe as well. Because all this happened to fulfil the words of scripture:Not one bone of his will be broken;
and again, in another place scripture says:They will look on the one whom they have pierced.
After this, Joseph of Arimathaea, who was a disciple of Jesus – though a secret one because he was afraid of the Jews – asked Pilate to let him remove the body of Jesus. Pilate gave permission, so they came and took it away. Nicodemus came as well – the same one who had first come to Jesus at night-time – and he brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds. They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it with the spices in linen cloths, following the Jewish burial custom. At the place where he had been crucified there was a garden, and in this garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been buried. Since it was the Jewish Day of Preparation and the tomb was near at hand, they laid Jesus there.

Good Friday
March 29, 2024
Pastor Tom Steers
Christ the Saviour Lutheran Church, Toronto
“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.”
John 1:29
The Good Friday service is marked by reflection on the cross of Jesus Christ and His sacrificial death that earned us salvation.
The altar has been stripped to symbolize the stripping of Christ before His crucifixion. Our worship focuses on the adoration of our crucified Saviour who now reigns together with God the Father and the Holy Spirit.
The opening portion of the liturgy includes no praise.
It proceeds directly to the Prayer of the Day.
Although somber, our service does not end on a note of despair. The closing litany, prayer, and hymn emphasize the triumph and redemption we have through the cross.
Jesus has made complete payment for our sins through His death for us, and through faith in Him alone we are reconciled with our loving God and offered eternal life.
At the end of the service, we depart in silence without the benediction. However, Christ's death is not God's final word. We keep vigil as we prepare to celebrate Christ's resurrection on Sunday morning.
Silence is kept as the people gather. As the Pastor enters all stand for prayer.
Pastor:“For God so loved the world that he gave His only Son, that whoever believes   in Him should not perish but have eternal life.”(John 3:16)
Congregation: Amen.
PRAYER OF THE DAY
C: Almighty God, have mercy upon us, your children, for whom our Lord Jesus Christ was willing to be betrayed, and given over to the hands of sinners to suffer death on the cross. He took the penalty for our sins, so that through faith in Him we are forgiven and offered eternal life. We pray for Your grace and mercy in the name of our crucified and risen Saviour, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE SERMON –
Today we remember a death.
The liturgical colour is black.
The mood is somber, and yet we call this Friday – ‘Good.’
That may leave us with the question, ‘why is it called Good?’
What’s the meaning of this day, and even more to the point, what is the meaning of the crucifixion?
It's Biblical that all human beings who have ever lived are guilty when tested against the Commandments of God’s Law.
When seen by our Holy, perfect Lord, we’re all guilty.
And we’ve been so since the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, disobeyed God and fell into sin.
It’s an inherited condition. And left untreated, it’s fatal – 100 per cent of the time.
Spiritually, eternally fatal.
Because God in His perfection, although all-loving, can’t overlook sin.
God can’t lie and say sin is OK; lying is a human trait.
But the Bible also tells us, repeatedly, that God loves us, and in fact, the Apostle John who authored today’s Gospel text, wrote in 1st John, that “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
It’s been said that the entire story of the Bible can be traced in the shape of the cross.
Because it is the story of the reconciliation of God, with man, through + Jesus Christ.
The cross becomes a bridge that closes that huge divide, the gulf, between a loving, perfect Father, and His fallen children.
And it is mind boggling for us that it was God, Himself, who provided the solution, who brings about the reconciliation.
It was God who reached out to us by coming down to earth and taking on human flesh in the person of Jesus Christ.
In the first Passover, God freed the people of Israel from physical bondage – slavery in Egypt. God told the people to make a sacrifice, to take a lamb without blemish, slaughter it, and put the blood over their doorways so the spirit of death would pass over them.
Many years later, at the time of Passover, Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem triumphantly on Palm Sunday.
The temple priests would have taken young lambs, without blemish, placed their hands on them, and while praying transferred the sins of people to the animal.
Then it would be sacrificed.
The death of the lamb was a symbolic payment for sin.
What the temple priests didn’t realize, was that God’s ultimate sacrifice had just entered the Holy City.
This could never be accomplished by the death of a lamb or goat, but only by a human being, yet one who was without sin.
However, as the Apostle Paul wrote, “all have sinned.”
So, God sent His only Son, to become the sacrifice to end all sacrifices, because He   was the one person who kept God’s law perfectly – God’s lamb without blemish – Jesus Christ.
Through the words of the Apostle John today, we find ourselves at the place where that sacrifice for sin happened.
We have an account by the only Apostle we know who was an eyewitness to the crucifixion.
The Roman authors Seneca and Cicero wrote that those who were crucified cursed and screamed loudly, as long as they could.
But with Jesus we hear none of this.
Christ didn’t curse His tormentors, the Roman soldiers, the religious authorities, or those who mocked Him.
Although truly innocent, in agony, and about to die, He says, "Father forgive them for they know not what they do.”
The suffering Jesus endured that first Good Friday began even before the cross.
There were dozens of deep lashes across Jesus’ back from a flogging.
There was a crown of thorns piercing deep into the skin of his head.
Then spikes were driven through His hands and feet.
And he hung this way on the cross for hours.
But because Jesus experienced this incredible pain, He understands our pain both physical and emotional.
Neither in times of suffering or sadness, does Christ desert us.
We can take comfort that we have a Saviour who understands sorrow, that can empathize because of what He endured – for us.
There are some who will blame the Romans, Pontius Pilate, the Jewish authorities, even Judas himself for Christ’s crucifixion.
But as Martin Luther explained in a sermon some 500 years ago, “never forget that it was your sins that placed the nails there.”
It was our sins that Jesus was atoning for – not His own.
As the prophet Isaiah wrote: “He was pierced for our transgressions, He was wounded for our iniquities, and by His wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53: 6)
And yet if Jesus hadn’t suffered, if the crucifixion had not taken place, every one of us would have been destined to hell forever, eternally separated from God.
The door between us and Heaven would have been shut.
But God didn’t want that, so He created this glorious exchange – our sins, for Christ’s righteousness.
A once, and for all, exchange.
Jesus had no sooner said "I thirst," and sipped the vinegar offered to Him on the cross, when He said, "It is finished.”
This wasn’t a cry of defeat. It was a shout of triumph.
The battle was over, the victory won – forever.
Sin, death and the devil were defeated because the final payment for sin had been made.
According to some modern thinkers, man is a very fine and noble creature, striving to become better.
He’s to be commended and admired.
Sin is said to be only a sociological condition.
But in the Bible, that’s not the way God sees it.
There, man is a fallen being, with a carnal nature that cannot be reconciled to God by our own efforts.
In Holy Scripture, man behaves in the same way we see in our daily news: war, murder, theft, greed, idolatry.
And these are all a result of the original fall into sin.
It’s behind every broken home, every troubled life, every sorrow and grief.
But Christ loves us, and came to save you, and me, from the penalty of all this.
It is God, who still reaches out to us through the Holy Spirit, with the gift of faith that saves.
Christ continues to come to us in His Word and Sacraments found in His true Church.
And here is the great power of the Gospel, of Christ's Good News.
That we are saved through faith in Him, alone, despite our natures.
We can learn from Jesus that while we’re mighty sinners – He’s an even mightier Saviour.
The Apostle John wrote his Gospel in Greek.
The Greek word for finished in the Bible, "tetelestai,” doesn’t simply mean, “it’s over.”
It was the term used for a business contract successfully completed, and it meant: paid in full.
That’s what Jesus was saying to us about salvation from the cross.
No co-payment is necessary, or possible.
When it comes to redemption, He’s done it all.
The Apostle Paul explained in Ephesians, Chapter 2, verses 8 to 9:
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith – and this is not from yourselves – it is the gift of God so that no one can boast.”
Our faith alone in Jesus as Redeemer saves us.
And that is the best news we could ever hear, because we could never do it on our own.
Today, when you look at the cross, I’d ask that you not only see the pain and agony of the crucifixion, but also see God’s love in Christ.
Because God the Father didn’t send Jesus, and Jesus didn’t willing go to the cross out of anger or hatred.
Many people wish that someone in their life would love them unconditionally, would love them so much they would die for them.
The truth is, someone did.
His name is Jesus Christ, Son of God, Saviour.
And so, may the knowledge of God’s love and forgiveness for you, keep your hearts and minds in Jesus Christ, now and forever.
Amen.

Good Friday & who killed that rabbi from Nazareth
Isaiah prophesies
 Is 52:13—53:12
See, my servant shall prosper,             he shall be raised high and greatly exalted. Even as many were amazed at him--             so marred was his look beyond human semblance             and his appearance beyond that of the sons of man-- ***             To whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? He grew up like a sapling before him,             like a shoot from the parched earth; there was in him no stately bearing to make us look at him,             nor appearance that would attract us to him. He was spurned and avoided by people,             a man of suffering, accustomed to infirmity, one of those from whom people hide their faces,             spurned, and we held him in no esteem. Yet it was our infirmities that he bore,             our sufferings that he endured, while we thought of him as stricken,             as one smitten by God and afflicted. But he was pierced for our offenses,             crushed for our sins; upon him was the chastisement that makes us whole,             by his stripes we were healed. We had all gone astray like sheep,             each following his own way; but the LORD laid upon him             the guilt of us all. *** If he gives his life as an offering for sin,             he shall see his descendants in a long life,             and the will of the LORD shall be accomplished through him. Because of his affliction             he shall see the light in fullness of days; through his suffering, my servant shall justify many,             and their guilt he shall bear. Therefore I will give him his portion among the great,             and he shall divide the spoils with the mighty, because he surrendered himself to death             and was counted among the wicked; and he shall take away the sins of many,             and win pardon for their offenses.
While the Gospel speaks of the Jews, the Apostles were Jews - just like that rabbi from Nazareth. For whom did Jesus die? For us all, Jew and gentile alike. Who killed Jesus? Yeah, us.

Jesus is the Messiah, the Anointed One, the Christ, prophesized, predicted, in the Old Testament, Hebrew Bible, read Isaiah 52:13-53:12.
One of the main points and expectations of the Old Testament was the coming of the Messiah, the Christ, read John 4:25.
Jesus announced he was the expected Messiah in Luke 4:16-21, which began his 3.5 year ministry on earth before ascending back to the Father after his crucifixion and resurrection from the dead.
Remember, Christ is not Jesus' last name, it is a title, the Messiah, the Christ.
Oddly enough, a demon in fear correctly identified Jesus, read Luke 4:34, which states, "Go away!  What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth?  Have you come to destroy us?  I know who you are, the Holy One of God", which equates to Anointed One, Messiah, Christ.

The Resurrection Body
Tumblr media
35 But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body will they come?” 36 How foolish! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 When you sow, you do not plant the body that will be, but just a seed, perhaps of wheat or of something else. 38 But God gives it a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body. 39 Not all flesh is the same: People have one kind of flesh, animals have another, birds another and fish another. 40 There are also heavenly bodies and there are earthly bodies; but the splendor of the heavenly bodies is one kind, and the splendor of the earthly bodies is another. 41 The sun has one kind of splendor, the moon another and the stars another; and star differs from star in splendor.
42 So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised imperishable; 43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body.
If there is a natural body, there is also a spiritual body. 45 So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”; the last Adam, a life-giving spirit. 46 The spiritual did not come first, but the natural, and after that the spiritual. 47 The first man was of the dust of the earth; the second man is of heaven. 48 As was the earthly man, so are those who are of the earth; and as is the heavenly man, so also are those who are of heaven. 49 And just as we have borne the image of the earthly man, so shall we bear the image of the heavenly man.
50 I declare to you, brothers and sisters, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
55 “Where, O death, is your victory?    Where, O death, is your sting?”
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58 Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. — 1 Corinthians 15:35-58 | New International Version (NIV) Holy Bible, New International Version®, NIV® Copyright ©1973, 1978, 1984, 2011 by Biblica, Inc.® All rights reserved worldwide. Matthew 21:33 “Listen to another parable: There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a winepress in it and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. Matthew 21:34 When the harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit. Matthew 21:35 “The tenants seized his servants; they beat one, killed another, and stoned a third. Matthew 21:36 Then he sent other servants to them, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way. Matthew 21:37 Last of all, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said. Matthew 21:38 “But when the tenants saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him and take his inheritance.’ Matthew 21:39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. Matthew 21:40 “Therefore, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?” Matthew 21:41 “He will bring those wretches to a wretched end,” they replied, “and he will rent the vineyard to other tenants, who will give him his share of the crop at harvest time.”

TANAKH (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English) Pages 1796, 1797, and 1798: Esther 8:1 That very day King Ahasuerus gave the property of Haman, the enemy of the Jews, to Queen Esther. Mordecai presented himself to the king, for Esther had revealed how he was related to her. Esther 8:2 The king slipped off his ring, which he had taken back from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai; and Esther put Mordecai in charge of Haman's property. Esther 8:3 Esther spoke to the king again, falling at his feet and weeping, and beseeching him ot avert the evil plotted by Haman the Agagite against the Jews. Esther 8:4 The king extended the golden scepter to Esther, and Esther arose and stood before the king. Esther 8:5 "If it please Your Majesty," she said, "and if I have won your favor and the proposal seems right to Your Majesty, and if I am pleasing to you--let dispatches be written countermanding those which were written by Haman son of Hammedatha the Agagite, embodying his plot to annihilate the Jews throughout the king's provinces. Esther 8:6 For how can I bear to see the disaster wich will befall my people! And how can I bear to see the destruction of my kindred!" Esther 8:7 Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and Mordecai the Jew, "I have given Haman's property to Esther, and he has been impaled on the stake for scheming against the Jews. Esther 8:8 And you may further write with regard to the Jews as you see fit. [Write it] in the king's name and seal it with the king's signet, for an edict that has been written in the king's name and sealed with the king's signet may not be revoked." Esther 8:9 So the king's scribes were summoned at that time, on the twenty-third day of the third month, that is, the month of Sivan; and letters were written, at Mordecai's dictation, to the Jews and to the satraps, the governors and the officials of the one hundred and twenty-seven provinces from India to Ethiopia: to every province in its own script and to every people in its own language, and to the Jews in their own script and language. Esther 8:10 He had them written in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed with the king's signet. Letters were dispatched by mounted couriers, riding steeds used in the king's service, bred of the royal stud, Esther 8:11 to this effect: The king has permitted the Jews of every city to assemble and fight for their lives; if any people or province attacks them, they may destroy, massacre, and exterminate its armed force together with women and hcildren, and plunder their possessions-- Esther 8:12 on a single day in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, namely, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, that is, the month of Adar. Esther 8:13 The text of the document was to be issued as a law in every single province: it was to be publicly displayed to all the peoples, so that the Jews should be ready for that day to avenge themselves on their enemies.

Daniel 3:14 Nebuchadnezzar spoke to them and said, "is it true, Shadrach, Mesach, and Abed-nego, that you do not serve my god or worship the statue of gold that I have set up? Daniel 3:15 Now if you are ready to fall down and worship the statue that I have made when you hear the sound of the horn, pipe, zither, lyre, psaltery, and bagpipe, and all other types of instruments, [well and good]; but if you will not worship, you shall at once be thrown into a burning fiery furnace, and what god is there that can save you from my power?" Daniel 3:16 Shadrach, Mesach, and Abed-nego said in reply to the king, "O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter, Daniel 3:17 for if so it must be, our God whom we serve is able to save us from the burning fiery furnace, and He will save us from your power, O king. L2: OSI Layer 2: The data link layer is analogous to a neighborhood traffic cop; it endeavors to arbitrate between parties contending for access to a medium, without concern for their ultimate destination. When devices attempt to use a medium simultaneously, frame collisions occur. Data-link protocols specify how devices detect and recover from such collisions, and may provide mechanisms to reduce or prevent them. (OSI-Model.com)

School segregation between Mexican and white students in Orange County, California, was widespread in the mid-1940s, with 80% of Mexican students attending 14 segregated schools. These schools taught Mexican children manual education – or gardening, bootmaking, blacksmithing, and carpentry for Mexican boys and sewing and homemaking for girls – while white schools taught academic preparation. The landmark case Mendez vs. Westminster (1947) desegregated Orange County schools, after the Mendez family were denied enrollment into the 17th Street School in Westminster in 1944, despite their cousins with lighter skin being admitted, and were instead told to enroll at the Hoover Elementary School for Mexican children. (Wikipedia)
In the years since Brown v. Board, the demographics of segregation have become entrenched within New York City’s public schools. In the mid-1960s, nearly half of students were White. Today’s school populations are roughly 41% Latino, 24% Black, 17% Asian, and 15% White. Over 8 in 10 Black students and over 7 in 10 Latino students attend a school where more than 90% of their classmates are students of color; 34% of White students are enrolled in a school that is over half-White. Nationally, New York City’ relies on academic screening for admission more than any other locale in the United States, utilizing a tool that drives segregation by race and class. Some Black and Latino students who attend schools where they are numerically underrepresented report that they don’t feel integrated. As I report in my book, one Black youth reflected: “Everyday walking through these doors, I feel alienated, like a single piece of black pepper in a sea of salt.” (Thirteen.org)

One legend tells how nightingales once only lived in India, when one nightingale visited Ukraine. Hearing sad songs from the people, the nightingale sang its song to cheer them up. The people responded with happy songs, and since then, nightingales have visited Ukraine every spring to hear Ukrainian songs. National poet Taras Shevchenko observed that "even the memory of the nightingale's song makes man happy." 3:18 a9FIg6Zr0dg aFIgZrdg A Fig…
TANAKH (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English): Pages 1070 and 1071: Jeremiah 24:1 The Lord showed me two baskets of figs, placed in front of the Temple of the Lord. This was after King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon had exiled King Jeconiah son of Jehoiakim of Judah, and the officials of Judah, and the craftsmen and smiths, from Jerusalem, and had brought them to Babylon. Jeremiah 24:2 One basket contained very good figs, like first-ripened figs, and the other basket contained very bad figs, so bad that they could not be eaten. Jeremiah 24:3 And the Lord said to me, "What do you see, Jeremiah?" I answered, "Figs--the good ones are very good, and the bad ones are very bad, so bad that they cannot be eaten." Jeremiah 24:4 Then the word of the Lord came to me: Jeremiah 24:5 Thus said the Lord, the God of Israel: As with these good figs, so I will single out for good the Judean exiles whom I have driven out from this place to the land of the Chaldeans. Jeremiah 24:6 I will look upon them favorably, and I will bring them back to this land; I will build them and not overthrow them. Jeremiah 24:7 And I will give them the understanding to acknowledge Me, for I am the Lord. And they shall be my people and I will be their God, when they turn back to me with all their heart.

Isaiah 55:10 For as the rain or snow drops from heaven And returns not there, But soaks the earth And makes it bring forth vegetation, Yielding seed for sowing and bread for eating, Isaiah 55:11 So is the word that issues from My mouth: It does not come back to Me unfulfilled, But performs what I purpose, Achieves what I sent it to do.
TANAKH (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English): Pages 863 and 864: Isaiah 9:1 The people that walked in darkness Have seen a brilliant light; On those who dwelt in a land of gloom Light has dawned. Isaiah 9:2 You have magnified that nation, Have given it great joy; They have rejoiced before You As they rejoice at reaping time, As they exult When dividing spoil. Isaiah 9:3 For the yoke that they bore And the stick on their back--the rod of their taskmaster--You have broken as on the day of Midian. Isaiah 9:4 Truly, all the boots put on to stomp with And all the garments donned in infamy Have been fed to the flames, Devoured by fire. Isaiah 9:5 For a child has been born to us, A son has been given us, And authority has settled on his shoulders. He has been named "The Mighty God is planning grace; The Eternal Father, a peaceable ruler"-- Isaiah 9:6 In token of abundant authority And of peace without limit Upon David's throne and kingdom, That it may be firmly established In justice and in equity Now and evermore. The zeal of the Lord of Hosts Shall bring this to pass.
TANAKH (Jewish Publication Society, Hebrew-English): Page 1006: Jeremiah 2:11 Has any nation changed its gods Even though they are no-gods? But My people has exchanged its glory For what can do no good. Jeremiah 2:12 Be appalled, O heavens, at this; Be horrified, utterly dazed!--says the Lord. Jeremiah 2:13 For My people have done a twofold wrong: They have forsaken Me, the Fount of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, Which cannot even hold water.
