Marissa Cooper is a great example of what happens when writers fail to develop a character outside their importance to the central male character/love story. By the end of season three Ryan & Marissa no longer worked as a couple because after three years of Ryan saving her the audience was just tired of seeing the same thing happening over and over again. Ironically, if the writers had allowed Marissa to grow outside of Ryan & her relationship with him they probably could have saved their core relationship.
I get Alan Sepinwall's tv newsletter, and this week he teased how his upcoming book on The OC will shed light on the behind-the-scenes conversations around the Marissa/Alex relationship.
(the pic actually a gif of Seth's over-the-top reaction to Marissa in Alex's apartment)
The funniest thing about The OC to me is imagining Tate Donovan begging the writers to give his character growth and Josh Schwartz and co. explaining to him that Jimmy is a great dad!!!
“We wrote it like Benedict and Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing, and, as mentioned before, a little bit of the Dangerous Liaisons quality. There was a lot of good inspiration driving us.”
Seeing The OC/Gossip Girl/Chuck creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage on the picket line makes me so emotional but happy, like these guys literally crafted my adolescent psyche with their stories 💗💗💗💗
A young woman named Samantha is shot in Central Park on July 4, 2023. The investigation ends up being connected to the mysterious fires also plaguing the city as well as the downtown music scene and an uptown family straining under their many secrets.
City on Fire is based on the novel by Garth Risk Hallberg. The series stars Chase Sui Wonders, Wyatt Oleff, Jemima Kirke, Nico Cameron Mitchell, Geoff Pierson, and Beth Malone. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage serve as writers, showrunners, and executive producers.
City on Fire premieres on Apple TV+ on May 12, 2023.
Listen I lost it over Mischa Barton being on the podcast and now I am once again losing my fucking mind over Ben McKenzie being on it!! YAY FOR MARISSA AND RYAN FROM THE OC

Update: Ben’s comment on Rachel’s IG post is everything (still team Ryissa though 😆) ⬇️
"The night [3x25] aired, we heard from people who watched the show and they were pissed. They loved that character, were in on Ryan and Marissa, were in on the Core Four, and it felt like we had violated something sacrosanct for them as viewers." - JS
As bad as things got and as devious as they were, they always found their way back to each other. I think that idea of coming in from not being the obvious romantic couple from the beginning of the show, to evolving into something way more, was really fun to watch and satisfying for audiences. They had that wicked quality to them. They both knew how to deliver a joke. We wrote it like Benedict and Beatrice from Much Ado About Nothing, and, as mentioned before, a little bit of the Dangerous Liaisons quality. There was a lot of good inspiration driving us.
