#Kenyan sand boas

Your new snake is cute! What does albino paradox mean? That's the morph, right? I've never heard of a paradox before!
Yep, that's a Kenyan sand boa morph!
Normal KSBs look like this:

And albinos lack melanin and only have yellow and red pigmentation, so they look like this:

And paradox albinos, like my guy, look a lot like albinos except they have random dots of melanin. Same color as albinos, same pretty blue eyes. The dots might be big or small, and there may be a lot of them or only a few.

Hey i think my friend hatched the same kind of sand boas you're looking after! They weren't even a year old in this pic and it's from like 2012. They're still doing great!!! Pretty easy care as far as snake care goes. I love them 💜
Tumblr media
I would put money on that that is a Kenyan sand boa, not a Saharan sand boa, judging by what I can see! They look very similar, but Kenyan breeding is fairly common and easy to do. Congrats to your friend!

The Kenya is fine! He's been looked at before and it seems he just doesn't like eating for a few months around this time. He worries me so much but he's only lost a gram so far. Thanks for your concern though! I just tried to offer him a mouse again to day and weighed him after he refused and it reminded me that they other type of snake I would like won't give me this sort of attitude.
Thank you for the follow-up! I guess he's just chilling and not really needing additional nutrition right now.
I tend to assume the best from those who send asks, but I still always bring up stuff like "go to the vet, get a fecal exam, check your husbandry, etc." because it's a good precedent to set for folks who might be reading this blog and aren't experienced keepers.
I'm glad he's okay and just not very hungry. :)
A California king snake is likely to be at the opposite end of that spectrum and will eat their own dinner, the sand boa's dinner, your feeding tongs, your hands, and possibly also a nibble of their own body if they accidentally rubbed food on it while eating. They definitely do not miss out on an opportunity to snack!

digby/casper is beautiful! the zoo i volunteer at is getting a kenyan sand boa soon and i'm super excited about it. do you have any cool facts about the species?
Sure thing! Kenyan sand boas are super cool and so fun. A lot of people will tell you that you'll never see them, and to an extent that's true, they spend a lot of time hiding in their burrows, but if you give them clutter on the surface you'll see them using it at nighttime.
Anyway, some cool KSB facts!
Look at their dinky little faces! Aside from being super cute and goofy looking, there's actually a reason they look like this. Their eyes are positioned on the side of their head so they can wait with just their eyes above the sand to watch for prey coming.
Tumblr media
They're actually adapted to strike sideways because of the angle when popping out of the substrate to catch their food. This means if they're a bit bitey they can actually be kinda hard to read because it's a bit more unpredictable to see a strike coming since the angle is so unusual. Fortunately I've never met one who didn't tame down like an absolute dream (though some will always be a bit grumpy).
There's a very big size difference between sexes! Males will stay around a foot long but big females might reach almost 3!
Along with the rosy boa, which actually gets a bit bigger on average, Kenyan sand boas are among the smallest members of the boa family.
Their colors may look a bit bright, but in the wild, across their range over a wide portion of western-northern Africa, their mottled colors help them blend in with sand and rocks when they're above ground.
They're awesome snakes! I love working with them and they're still a bit underrated as awesome pets!

Not sure if I’ve mentioned this before, but Babygirl has a passion for boobs. Her favorite activity is being let into someone’s shirt (ideally someone with boobs and a bra so that she can sit in it and be warm and burrowed.

I have a Kenya sand boa that has refused to eat for almost three months. He's such a nasty man. I can't wait until I get one of my dream snakes, a California king, and finally have someone that will love to eat lol
Ooof, I'm so sorry Anon.
Is that Kenyan seeing a vet? Because they're surprisingly sensitive to husbandry but they're usually pretty solid feeders once established, and it sounds like they might need some help.
If you haven't already, I'd definitely recommend a fecal panel and husbandry review with your vet before bringing in any other reptiles, just in case it's something that could be spread.
If you've already seen your vet and established that this is just behavioral, then you can rest easy with bringing in a California king snake and have somebody to monch down all of your Kenyan's refused dinners. :)
