[ID: a digital sketch of Eda and Raine from the owl house. They're in their designs from watching and dreaming, pre epilogue. Raine holds out their arm for an injection (given by a disembodied hand and labeled "magic rabies shot") and Eda lays a hand on their shoulder and leans her head on theirs. She says "you're doing great Raine! how'd you get rabies tho?". Raine stares dead eyed at the viewer as a thought bubble connected to them shows Belos biting down on their arm. End ID]
I was gonna post a request today but I feel like it's gonna flop and this is funnier. So request tomorrow, Raine Whispers Rabies doodle today

I've seen a lot of shows with lackluster finale, but never has the finale of a show actively ruined the rest of the series for me like Watching and Dreaming

Very tragic that we never got to see Luz and Hunter kick Philip's ass like it was set-up in TTT... we never got any payoff for the Lunter hints in SAI and the Caleb/Evelyn parallels that were established in HP and made more apparent in HM... very disheartening that TOH got cancelled after TTT aired, now we'll never know how it ends 😔

How Belos remembers Caleb back in the human realm:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
How Caleb actually was back in the human realm:
Tumblr media
This is such a good addition to the ways the story has shown us over and over that Philip is an intentionally unreliable narrator.
Now, Luz is also an unreliable narrator as we've seen a few times, but with Luz it's clearly unintentional and a side effect of RSD, where she takes on more guilt than is warranted. Philip on the other hand, rewrites the story to make himself look better and be absolved of all guilt each time.
First we see it in "Elsewhere and Elsewhen", when Philip is exposed for purposely fabricating the entries in his journal, which we were following since Luz discovered it back in "Through The Looking Glass Ruins". It was deliberate on his part to doctor his own personal journal that he later personally delivers to a library, all centuries before he ever became Belos. And it worked! Philip appeared much kinder and genuinely curious of the Boiling Isles, so much so both the audience and Luz had sympathy for him, yet it was all a lie on his journey of genocide. He set about fabricating sympathy for himself long before he had any power or chance of destroying the Isles, relaying how deeply manipulative he is.
Then we see it again in "Hollow Mind", with Belos having a fake mindscape full of fabricated propaganda of his reign that hid his real memories of his life and actions. His own subconscious greeted them in a purposely innocent persona to lower their guard, then revealed himself after he got what he wanted. The layers of manipulation and dishonesty it takes to create such cognitive dissonance just on the off change his mind is ever explored is something that cannot be understated. Even further than purposely fabricating his journal, he stripped away parts of his own memory and presented his Inner Belos as a child all to garner, again, more sympathy.
Now we see it again here, in "Thanks To Them", where the first time the show directly shows us Caleb in the human realm outside of Belos' memory of him, he looks miserable. He has heavy bags under his eyes, sunken in cheeks, and a truly despondent expression.
It's entirely possible Caleb hid his misery from Philip, being the older child and having to take on responsibility to protect his younger brother, and it's also possible Caleb did enjoy his childhood and was genuinely happy in those earlier memories. But as this new shot shows us, Caleb eventually stops appearing that way and grows depressed being in the human realm, yet conveniently there's no memory Philip has that shows this stage of Caleb.
We can even dig a little further into some of the mindscape memories to see more of the framework for this final reveal.
Here we have the last memory of Caleb before the Boiling Isles memories start:
Tumblr media
This is also the first memory where Philip isn't smiling. Caleb is smiling though, and this is the most in the light Caleb has appeared in a memory since the one of him carving that mask. Caleb slowly turned further away from the lighting throughout Belos' early memories, being shrouded in more and more darkness in each one, but this memory when Philip looks unhappy for the first time is when Caleb's finally turning back towards the light, and it's most likely the memory of when Caleb left the human realm.
Then here we have the first memory Caleb's eyes become visible:
Tumblr media
The moment they reunited is when Philip finally remembers Caleb's eyes. And boy does he look drastically different from the man in the mirror. He doesn't have eyebags, his cheeks are no longer sunken in, and he looks happy.
This moment is also when Philip decides to kill him.
Because he looked too happy here in this world Philip thinks is hell.
And he looked far happier there than he did back home.
So Philip wipes away those details from his memory. Like he does every other detail that makes him appear to be in the wrong.
And we finally have the proof of it. When Belos said "Out of all the grimwalkers, you looked the most like him" he meant it, even after he willingly rewrote his own memories of Caleb to reflect differently.

they spend like half of watching and dreaming establishing how the collector doesn't understand the concept of death and injury for mortals because he is so powerful that he doesnt need to worry about that for himself. and also they have never connected with mortals enough to understand that via extrapolation. so they set that up entirely for the collector to finally understand the gravity of death when he befriends luz and she dies right in front of him. but then like one anime battle later they meet up with luz again and luz is like "ya ik i died lol but the titan who was also dead fixed me back up and im fine dw about it"
#shut up pandora#the owl house#luz noceda#the collector#watching and dreaming#i understand the concept of getting the collector to understand death and i think its interesting to explore#however even if the show had more time to do it this is ultimately a disney show#and any character loveable enough to befriend the collector#would also be a character that disney s&p would not allow the creators to permakill#and luz being the main character gives her a reason to connect with the collector and fill that role#but luz DEFINITELY cant be permakilled by reason of good storytelling#so this concept specifically in the context of a disney show is really fucking hard to explore imo#like yeah! luz's death was pretty heartwrenching especially everyones reactions afterwards#but what was the collector supposed to walk away with afterwards with regards to that specific topic?#'yeah death is permanent if someone dies youll never see them again and all the potential you had to connect with them is gone forever'#'oh but not luz specifically she died and came back the titan fixed her up'#'also the titan whos been dead for eons was actually just chilling the whole time and luz had a lovely conversation with them'#granted the titan is gone now but thats more related to luzs baggage#and if the collector does learn about the permanence of death from it it would be after the shows over which i think is cheap#anyway that just. wasnt a topic that could be explored well in a disney show with the main characters imo#and i feel like they should have just gone with the 'the collector parallels king in that they need to consider ppls feelings' route#but like. a lot more drastic than kings character arc due to the collector being a demigod or smth#again. this isnt something i think they could have adequately explored with a protagonist even with a full 3 seasons#the closest the show comes to exploring this is with belos and his brother#how belos killed caleb and destroyed any potential they had of making up or just any of calebs future in general#but he still keeps making grimwalkers bc he cant accept that and it works bc caleb is not involved in the plot at all#so we can understand the tragedy without having a character that is involved in the story himself and therefore subjected to disney#but with luz its real hard to fridge her for the collectors character development lol bc shes got other stuff going on#shes the main character. you cant kill the main character for someone else's character development in a show like this

the worst part about flapjack's death is that luz and hunter's friendship died right along with it lmao
#idk it's just funny. TTT goes so fucking far in order to say that luz and hunter have built a strong bond between them#to the point that luz calls him family#then luz is the only one who refuses to fight possessed hunter#she only gets close to him to hug him and do the 'this is not you!' middle school couple trope on him#not only that but flapjack entrusts his powers for luz when he sees what's become of hunter and THAT is what she CHOOSES to do#you know. flapjack who was caleb's palisman. who was there for the entirety of caleb and evelyn's romance to the point that belos-#-considers him a symbol of caleb's betrayal (his love for evelyn)#this is the same flapjack that looks at phillip trying to harm 'caleb' again and decides to literally put his powers in luz's hands#and ultimately his sacrifice means neither caleb or evelyn have to die again#which is kinda confirmed by the way hunter goes like 'there's a reason you and i are alive and here right now and it's because-#-it's our turn to defeat belos' like i didn't even have to reach for this. hunter says it himself#and this is all great and compelling and makes sense except for the fact that the show just forgets about this on the next two episodes#and so where the first episode establishes that luz and hunter are close friends FTF and WAD are like 'do they even know each other?idk idc#and i get to stare at the camera because OBVIOUSLY if hunter and luz were a couple this wouldn't be a problem to begin with#and flapjack's death loses meaning when it turns out that nothing about evelyn or caleb or the previous confrontations between belos and-#-the other grimwalkers has any bearing in the plot anymore#flapjack gave its life to preserve the love that changed the world back then but because it's just never acknowledged it's like. who cares#someone had to die and we can't kill one of the kids#shrugs#sorry i have so much resentment in my heart#but do not get it twisted. it's HILARIOUS to me that TOH is at its most compelling when the lunter/witteclaw parallels are at its strongest#and then shoots itself in the foot when they realize that they paired off both characters with other people#okay that's all i have to say by now#lunter#is this anything

So I guess I'm going to spend the next four to five business days hyperfocusing on a potential Dishonored au for TOG ft. Hunter as Emily, Eda as Corvo, and Belos as the Royal Spymaster. I've already figured out most of the casting and how the storyline will shift and change (Hunter is older than Emily was and has a much more active role) for both games, and as soon as work is done I'm going to work on some art for it

so, you've heard shows be recommended because they had gay characters. you don't really know what they're actually about though, and don't know if they'd be something you'd be into and are worried about spoilers. here's spoiler free plot summaries of em!
Tumblr media
The Owl House
The Owl House starts out as a typical teenage girl goes into a fantasy realm story, but with a twist. Actions have consequences. The protagonist is a girl named Luz Noceda, who was being sent to a camp to make her behave normally by her mother after causing too much trouble at school. She ends up finding a place she's always dreamed of: a fantasy world. A world where everyone's so much weirder than she is. And she thinks, maybe if I don't belong out there, maybe people will like me here. Maybe I can be special here.
It's a story about found family, propaganda, erased history, living with disability, religious trauma, and neurodivergence. It's fundamentally a show about people who's brains work differently finding each other and making a family that treats them right. Definitely my favorite of the ones on this list. It's about people who've been oppressed being pissed about it and about finding yourself again after giving up on everyone around you for so long. It's basically a show about being a minority and trying to be understood and to understand yourself in the process. It's about growing up neurodivergent and how isolating it feels and figuring yourself out. It's about repairing broken relationships and parents who fuck up. And it's just. Such a love letter to anyone who was the weird kid in school. It's sad and heartbreaking and also so hopeful, and it's wonderful.
Content warnings: Abuse, Death, Grief, Animal Death, Suicidal thoughts, Vague suicide attempts, Depression, blink and you'll miss it s/h, body horror, religious trauma
Tumblr media
She Ra and the Princesses Of Power
Adora was raised in the Horde since she was a baby, being fed propaganda about how cruel the princesses were. After learning how the horde actually was, though, she defects. But there's one problem. Her best friend, Catra, stays behind. Adora finds a sword that can transform her into She Ra, and might be the key to figuring out who she really is, while Catra takes her place as force captain.
It's a story about abuse, at the end of the day. Adora and Catra were stuck in a golden child and scapegoat dynamic, despite how much they care about each other. This leads to them knowing everything about each other but not understanding it. There's a fundamental disconnect between them, because both of their traumas are completely different. They have complete misconceptions about each other. Even in their initial split, they both have completely different perceptions of what's going on and why the other is upset. It's not a story about magic princesses, it's about the cycle of abuse and what makes it so complicated. Does it have flaws? Yeah. But ultimately I really really enjoy it, and when it does something right it does something RIGHT. Get through season one, it starts kids show-y but it gets very good during later s1.
Content warnings: Abuse (obviously), body horror, gaslighting (and I mean actual gaslighting, not what the Internet thinks gaslighting is), suicide, depression, flashing lights and eyestrain during the finale
Tumblr media
Steven Universe
Steven Universe is a sins of the father story. Steven is the son of the leader of the rebel group The Crystal Gems, who's name was Rose Quartz. He navigates the confusion of being half gem and half human, as well as trying to figure out the mess of the rebellion and what his mother left behind. He's constantly in her shadow, for better or for worse.
It's a story about grief. How it impacts relationships, how it taints history, how it impacts family. It has some definite flaws, but ultimately it's about very flawed people who have lost so many people in their life trying to cope with it. Trying to handle what they lost and trying to adjust to life without them. It's about how expectations fuck a kid up and about agency and just a show about complicated relationships in general, at the end of the day. Also, it has some FANTASTIC music.
Content warnings: Grief, Abuse, body horror, very creepy people I don't know how to tag, heavy allegories for homophobia
Tumblr media
Nimona
Nimona is a story about a guy who gets framed for murder. His name is Ballister Boldheart, a commoner who hoped to become a knight. It seemed everyone was waiting to watch him fail, so it was no surprise when he was the immediate target. Heavily injured and away from the man he loves, he's left alone trying to figure out a way to prove his innocence- until a strange kid comes into his life. This kids name is Nimona, and while he is intent on proving his innocence, she gave up on being anything but a villain a long time ago.
It's about deconstructing the model minority myth, trans rage, propaganda, and with a healthy dose of "FUCK the police".
Content warnings: Heavy injury, on screen suicide attempt, flashing lights
feel free to add more shows! just remember to keep the summaries as spoiler free as you can and add content warnings!

BIG SPOILERS FOR THE OWL HOUSE !!!
Tumblr media
The implications of this line are… absolutely fucking me up… I understand it’s likely because of his experience with what happened to the titans. But like. It implies The Collector likely understands that when his siblings take people they are just gone and his magic cannot bring them back. It seems the possibility that they took Luz was where his mind went after seeing that his magic couldn’t bring her back
So with little understanding of death, this is still a rule in his mind. His siblings can take people. They won’t come back. He can’t bring them back. And it seems this is the only way any kind of death has gotten through to him. And I know they’re immortal star beings but the Collector still seems to form very child like attachments. And the fact that his older siblings (which he still calls siblings) are essentially the most powerful, frightening, and dangerous things in his world view, the only beings that could possibly take others away from him in his mind… just like. Ough.

Luz's "do you not understand what death means to mortals?" at the beginning of the episode. Her reaching out to them after she noticed them crying.
Tumblr media
The Collector trying to implement what they'd learned about forgiveness and forgiveness during the battle with Belos. Having it be the wrong choice, having it be what caused Luz to disappear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Him being confused because they thought that was the right thing and it's all just so confusing. they've been yanked around and made a fool of by everyone, by his siblings, by Belos, but this time was going to be different. He was learning from good people, from people who became friends.
The excited "We can all be buddies now" before Belos tried to blast them.
Tumblr media
Luz telling them and reassuring them that it was a good thing, that they did good, that they shouldn't give up having kindness and forgiveness towards people because that's the exact opposite outcome they need The Collector to take away from this.
Tumblr media
The music change, the colors, the camera angles,,,
Them not understanding that the baby Titans didn't leave, they didn't abandon him, they weren't snatched away to another playground.
Tumblr media
"the archivists aren't here, they couldn't have taken her."
They Died.
The Collector having to come to terms with mortals dying and not being able to fix her.
being completely alone grappling with the idea that things Die because her two loved ones are going fucking feral. Him being able to Tell this is serious. That something's deeply, deeply wrong all because of their reactions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Collector appearing so so childlike in the moment when Eda moves them aside
Tumblr media
"Owl Lady, you know where Luz is, right?"
Tumblr media
"Back up, kid. I don't think I can control myself right now."
the fear, and confusion, while cloaked in the shadow of the Owl Beast
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The realizing that Luz isn't coming back. The "she's really gone" and the voice break as the light floats away.
Tumblr media
I'm just, I can't, I'm throwing myself down the stairs as we speak, it's 1am how am I supposed to sleep
