Son of Chi & Arthur Flink - The Fifth World Recordings - a Jon Hassell tribute from Astral Industries

AI-32 signals the arrival of ‘The Fifth World Recordings’, by Son of Chi (Hanyo van Oosterom) and long-term collaborator Arthur Flink. A tribute to the late Jon Hassell, who passed away in 2021, the album connects a deep running thread that goes back to the source of Chi project. Carrying on from where Hassell left off, the album takes inspiration and references from his Fourth World music concept and the ancient Hopi tradition of Native America. Illuminating the subliminal space of the arising Fifth World, Son of Chi pays respects to an inimitable force in contemporary music. Hassell’s ‘Dream Theory in Malaya’ forms a touchstone to Hanyo van Oosterom’s musical journey, which soundtracked long, deep and reflective periods living in the cave of the Kallikatsou (Patmos, Greece) back in the early 80s. This period resulted in Hanyo’s track as Chi - ‘Hopi’ - in 1984. Hanyo met Hassell shortly after in 1987 at his “The Surgeon in the Nightsky” concert in Rotterdam - it wasn’t until twenty years later that Hanyo invited him for two magic nights of “Instant Composing Sessions” with the Numoonlab Orchestra (with a host of other artists) at the LantarenVenster, the very same stage where Hassell had performed in 1987 and also where Chi did their first live performance. Dreamful, mysterious, prophetic, the Fifth World Recordings features the quiet yet elaborate sound of Chi awash with rich instrumentation, field recordings, and old stories by the firelight. Sketches were created with drones, loops, and soundscapes, with which Arthur Flink (also a member of the Numoonlab Orchestra) jammed on trumpet. Channelling Hassell’s idiosyncratic style, floating melodies and lyrical improvisations are parsed into the mix, where Hanyo has processed and manipulated the recordings, also referencing Hassell’s exotic scales and unique harmonics. Additionally, the wah Bamboo flute at the closing piece is an homage to the works of Chi co-founder Jacobus Derwort (1952-2019). For this piece Hanyo used his first bamboo flute he made at the cave of the Kallikatsou in 1984. Arthur Flink answers in counterpoint with the wah trumpet, almost like the intuitive communication of the nightbirds...

De Gouvernestraat met het gebouw Ons Huis van LantarenVenster, 6 november 1985.

LantarenVenster kent een rijke historie sinds 1949 als theater voor film, dans, theater en muziek aan de Gouvernestraat in Rotterdam. In oktober 2010 opende LantarenVenster met film en muziek haar deuren op de prachtige nieuwe locatie op de Kop van Zuid.

LantarenVenster was tot 2010 gevestigd in de Gouvernestraat, in een van de oudste gebouwen met een culturele bestemming. Het werd in 1909 geopend als Ons Huis, een gebouw bestemd voor het zogenaamde ‘volksontwikkelingswerk’. Als een van de weinige cultuurpanden bleef Ons Huis gespaard in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Na de oorlog ontwikkelde het zich in eerste instantie meer tot een centrum voor beeldende kunsten, met expositieruimte en ateliers. Later kwamen daar film en theater als gezichtsbepalende activiteiten bij.

In 1949 werd onder leiding van de Rotterdamse architect J.B. Bakema een deel van Ons Huis verbouwd tot filmzaal: ’t Venster (later Venster 1). Daarbij kreeg het gebouw ook de entree, zoals die nu nog steeds zichtbaar is. Dezelfde architect realiseerde in 1952 de modernisering van de ‘oude schouwzaal’ tot theaterzaal De Lantaren (later Lantaren 1). In de bijna zestig jaar sindsdien is er met regelmaat geknipt en geplakt aan het gebouw. Het gebouw is altijd zeer intensief gebruikt. De laatste grootschalige renovatie en uitbreiding (Venster 2) dateren van 1991. De filmzalen Venster 3 en 4 werden in 1996 nog eens stevig aangepakt.

In de eerste zes decennia werd het gebouw beheerd door een opeenvolging van particuliere verenigingen en associaties. Vanaf 1969 nam de Rotterdamse Kunststichting (een gemeentelijke dienst) het beheer over van de theaterzaal. Bijna tien jaar later verwierf ze ook de filmzalen en werden beide gebouwen tot één geheel samengevoegd. In 1986 werd Theater Lantaren/Venster weer een zelfstandige stichting.

La pieza inédita viene acompañada de un videoclip rodado por Nick Helderman en La Marbrerie de Montreuil, Francia, con Julia Kotarba, Natalia Kotarba y Maxime Navert, miembros de la banda de gira de STRÉLISKI.

"Umbra" fue la última pieza que compuso para el proyecto y se terminó cuando ya se había grabado la mayor parte de Néo-Romance. "Umbra" hace referencia a la parte más oscura de la sombra, pero esta pieza se creó para intentar poner algo de luz en ella", dice STRÉLISKI. Convertida en el cierre habitual de sus conciertos, la pieza es ahora una de las favoritas de los fans, cosechando una calurosa acogida allá donde ha tocado.

"Es ahora una de mis piezas favoritas para tocar en directo", añade STRÉLISKI."Empezó siendo el final de mi espectáculo, con piano solo, y se convirtió en una celebración colectiva, basada en la improvisación. Me encanta interpretarla junto a mis maravillosas instrumentistas Julia y Natalia Kotarba, y con mi compañero de siempre Maxime Navert al sintetizador".

Un álbum centrado en la importancia del Romanticismo en el mundo moderno, y en lo que la relación de los románticos con la naturaleza puede enseñarnos en tiempos tan difíciles, Néo-Romance se ha convertido en un éxito comercial y de crítica. El disco alcanzó el nº 1 en la lista de álbumes de Québec -por delante de Taylor Swift- y ha sido nominado para el Premio Polaris de la Música 2023. STRÉLISKI estambién la artista femenina más nominada de este año en L'ADISQ - una ceremonia que recompensa la excelencia en la industria musical quebequense - con seis nominaciones en total.

Empezando con tres actuaciones en Múnich, Carouge y Zúrich, STRÉLISKI continuará su gira Néo-Romance con 30 nuevas fechas por Canadá, Estados Unidos y Europa durante el resto de 2023 y hasta 2024. A continuación, todas las fechas de la gira:

Guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel was picked up in 1991 by vibraphonist Gary Burton direct from the Berklee School of Music. Their collaboration made Rosenwinkel one of America's most respected guitarists. Having worked with Joe Lovano and Joe Henderson, to name just a few and praised by colleagues like Pat Metheny and John Scofield, Kurt is a role model for the current generation of jazz guitarists, not only because of his virtuosity, especially because of his openness of mind and his successful rock and hip-hop explorations.

THE LEAKS OF VENICE

a film by Pia Bolognesi and Giulio Bursi

An old building in Venice hosts an exhibition, a visitor walks through empty rooms discovering a fictionalized architectural space that functions like an abandoned theatre set. While a city that is slowly drowning floods you with its obsessive presence in and off-screen, imagination can’t exceed reality. Inspired by Alexander Kluge’s oeuvre and his constellation of film and video works, the metanarrative framework of this exploration attempts to de-construct the subjective experience and liberate the cinematic energy from the horror vacui of the display.

We met Alexander Kluge in 2015, when he invited us to re-elaborate his monumental News from Ideological Antiquity in the form of a brief ciné-tract for our series Uncanny. In 2017 his Kairos Film commissioned us a “creative documentation” of the exhibition The Boat is Leaking. The Captain Lied., held at Venice’s Fondazione Prada. We were interested in filming things that resist the camera and in filming them, we were interested in showing how the rhetorics of exhibition worked. The Leaks of Venice is also a film about the impossibility of representing that type of experience - a dialogue between artworks, sound, image and space, where both the spectator and the author are absent.

Anna (***) 10 jaar alweer na deel 1 verschijnt de sequel (hoewel ik die nog niet gezien heb). Erg indrukwekkend om te zien met hoeveel inzet en optimisme Gore nog altijd bezig blijft om de wereld bewust te maken van klimaatverandering.
