A seemingly ordinary Elympion orphan who's adopted by his 13-year-old half-brother, Julius Will Kresnik when he was 5. Due to his brother working a job to provide them, Ludger learned how to cook and clean while attending school. His first dish to Julius, a pasta margherita, forever changed their distant relationship to one of love and devotion.
Ludger aspires to be an Agent of the Spirius Corporation like his brother, who agrees to train him so he can take the entrance exam and properly defend himself. Spirius' standard equipment consists of twin swords, guns, and sledgehammers, which Ludger swaps between in battle.
When he turned 19, Ludger took Spirius' entrance exam with his brother as proctor. His test ends in failure, leading Ludger to land a job as a chef at Trigleph Station's cafeteria. But on his first day? A terrorist organization called Exodus hijacks a train to ram it into Oscore, a food generation plant. Ludger boards it to try and help stop it.
This leads him to meet Elle, a girl seeking a mysterious land known as Canaan, and Jude Mathis, a famous researcher who dispelled the Schism separating the countries Rieze Maxia and Elympios. Julius' boss, Bisley Bakur, is also on-board and offers Ludger a job if he stops the crash. Jude tags along like the do-gooder he is.
At the front cat is Julius, who kills the terrorists up front... and attempts to do the same to Bisley. However, a mysterious power from Julius' watch takes Ludger over and sends him, Jude, and Elle to the back of the train again somehow. Bisley's gone, yet Julius is up front by himself. But something's off-- the loving brother he knew tries to kill him and Jude without remorse. Before he can, Ludger kills Julius using that same strange power, sending them back home...to crash into Oscore.
A doctor named Rideaux treats their injuries for an absurd 20,000,000 gald. Thinking Julius is dead, Ludger agrees to take out a loan and faces debt travel restrictions. Bisley also returns to force Ludger into finding the suspected mastermind behind Exodus' attack: the alive and well Julius. His search leads him to meet Jude's friends: Rowen J. Ilbert, Leia Rolando, Elize Lutus, and Alvin who join him to learn why Milla's gone missing and the strange other worlds that keep spawning around Ludger.
Bisley soon after calls Ludger's GHS, requesting he meet up with Agents who managed to get a data disc off Julius and deliver it to him. The disc happens to have data on Fractured Dimensions-- the strange realities their group kept ending up in. The Kresnik family must destroy these FDs as their curse, a black armor called the Chromatus, is the only way to navigate through the Void to them and destroy their cores, the Divergence Catalysts. If too many FDs exist, the soul reincarnation process can't handle the extra strain, and people will stop being reborn. If Ludger refuses to do his family duty, Bisley will hand him to the police on the spot; Ludger agrees and is now a Department of Dimensional Affairs (DODA) Agent.
Ludger and co. are then sent to another FD by Bisley, which so happens to be where the Great Spirit Chronos is. He guards Canaan and seeks to eliminate anyone who can help humanity win "Origin's Trial". Before Chronos can kill them, Julius swoops in to help everyone retreat to that dimension's Rieze Maxia. This pushes Ludger to meet that dimension's Milla, who is an ordinary human living with her "big sister", the Great Spirit Muzet. Julius and Milla both tag along to defeat Muzet, as she's this world's Divergence Catalyst. However, though Fractured persons and things are supposed to be destroyed with the dimension, Milla is still with them and Muzet's catalyst is still in Ludger's hands.
Julius tries to steal Muzet's catalyst, the Waymarker Maxwell's Temporal Blade, but he's stopped by Rideaux who demands Ludger arrest Julius. Ludger refuses, leading Rideaux to beat Ludger and make the brothers surrender. Ludger, Julius, Milla, and their friends are all brought to Bisley's office where he explains why FDs exist: they're part of Origin's Trial. The goal is for humanity to gather the 5 Waymarkers to summon Canaan before 1,000,000 FDs exist. Win, and the Kresnik who reaches Canaan gets a wish. Fail, and miasma wipes out humanity in every single dimension. It's do-or-die.
Given Ludger brought back the Fractured Milla and the Waymarker, Bisley surmises he's the Key of Kresnik: a special Kresnik whose extra power can transport items to this dimension, the Prime Dimension. He thus assigns Ludger to find the Waymarkers while Julius remains locked up in Spirius' basement. However, Julius breaks out so he can stall Chronos while Ludger fulfills his duty and his new promise to help Elle get to Canaan.
Ludger managed to find 4/5 of them with new help from King Gaius and his world's Muzet, but the 5th cannot be accessed because the Milla from Ludger's world is trapped in the Void. The four Great Spirits with her won't let anyone get close to that dimension until she's rescued. Fractured Milla and Ludger both realize why Prime Milla's stuck: two of the same thing can't exist in the Prime Dimension. Thus, Fractured Milla has to die or be sent to the Void to let Prime Milla escape.
Before anyone can do anything, Exodus hijacks a peace conference on the S.S. Pelune. Milla, Jude, Alvin, Elle, and Ludger set out to save whoever they can. This ends up being a trap by Rideaux who's taken control and set up a ritual circle to summon Prime Milla in the conference hall. Fractured Milla falls into the circle, but Ludger catches her hand. However, Rideaux is inches away from killing Elle. Milla forces Ludger to let her go so he can save Elle. Prime Milla is thus summoned with Fractured Milla now sent into the Void. Him and Elle both struggle with her loss.
With Prime Milla free, the dimension with the 5th Waymarker is now reachable. However, Elle recognizes it as her home and her father, Victor, confirms Elle comes from this Fractured Dimension and she's the real Key of Kresnik. He sent her to the Prime so Ludger would eventually come here to die by his hand. Only then, being a Fractured Ludger, can he replace Ludger in the Prime Dimension. Elle can only watch as Victor fights Ludger, Milla, Rowen, and Jude, which ends in his loss.
In his dying moments, Victor warns Ludger that using the Chromatus is what turns people in catalysts and later creates a Fractured Dimension. When Victor does one last charge, Ludger hesitates to run him through. Victor thus does the deed for him, chastising Ludger for his inability to steel himself and protect what matters. Elle is left to cry over his fading body as her Dimension--her home--shatters around her.
Returning to the Prime, Rowen notices Elle's beginning to catalyze. Seeing that, Jude pieces together that Elle's shouldering the cost for Ludger's use of the Chromatus. The group decides it's now too dangerous to bring Elle with them, but Elle's determination to keep going with them sways their minds. With all the Waymarkers now in hand, Ludger, Elle, and the others summon Canaan from its hiding place within the Void.
Chronos appears, sensing Canaan's return to the Prime. In one hand is a barely conscious Julius, who never gave up fighting Chronos during all that time. Chronos tries killing Ludger, but Elle steps in front of him to protect him. Bisley protects Elle from Chronos' spell and warns the Great Spirit he knows the one way a person can enter Canaan: creating a Soul Bridge by using another strong Kresnik's soul. Elle hears this and runs away to make a deal with Bisley to not let Ludger be a Soul Bridge, as long as she follows his commands. "I'm just a fake [Elle]", as she says.
To honor this deal, Bisley has Ludger promoted to Spirius Vice President with orders for all personnel to not let Ludger leave Spirius HQ the Trial's over. Calling Bisley, Elle steals the phone and insists Ludger stay there and please keep safe. Jude and Milla insist they can't just sit around and urge Ludger to follow her to Canaan. Ludger... refuses. Jude refuses to accept this, insisting Elle wants Ludger to come save her, and fights Ludger to knock sense into him. For the time being, Ludger's resolve has returned and he escapes Spirius with Milla, Muzet, and Gaius while Jude acts as bait.
After their escape, Julius calls to say he's rescued Jude and left a letter for Ludger at their apartment. Julius' letter laments Bisley reaching Canaan and explains there's now just one way to make a Soul Bridge: either Julius or Ludger has to die by the other's hand. Thus, he asks Ludger to come to Marksburg, where Canaan's closest to, if his resolve allows him. Ludger... can't do it. Jude assures Ludger they'll talk to Julius while he rests at home.
This act of kindness is not 100% genuine-- it's part of Julius' secret contingency plan. If Ludger refused, Julius asked Jude to bring all his friends to Marksburg without telling Ludger so he can kill himself and be their Soul Bridge to stop Bisley's wish to enslave all Spiritkind. But before Julius can slit his own throat, Ludger stops him thanks to his childhood friend Nova overhearing Jude explaining the plan to the others.
Everyone, Julius included, pleads with Ludger to step aside. When Ludger refuses, Julius reveals he's been catalyzing for years and insists he'd soon fade anyway. At least if he became a bridge, his last moments would mean something.
But after so many losses?
Ludger can't take another.
Especially not if it's his only family.
Ludger then makes the most important choice of his life: he'll protect Julius, no matter what. Even if it means abandoning Elle. Abandoning the world. Killing Jude, Milla, Leia, Elize, Alvin, Rowen, Muzet, and Gaius. Taking Julius' watch, Ludger activates a stronger version of the Chromatus and fights his friends to the death.
In the end, six bodies and two Spirit Fossils sink into the ocean. The brothers Ludger and Julius Kresnik are still standing, the younger covered in his friends' blood. Ludger hugs his brother as Julius' catalyst brings him to his knees, the realization of what he's done beginning to set in. Ludger hugs his brother tighter and eventually helps him stand.
For the only thing he can do now is enjoy these final days with Julius until either humanity fails the Trial or Bisley's wish comes to pass...
Unless.... his will allows him to find another answer.
