What is the closest military base to the white house?
The White House IS a military installation.
It is the home and workplace of the Commander-in-Chief of United States military forces, so that alone makes it an important command and control headquarters. The various branches of the military have an active role in the everyday logistics of running the White House campus and supporting the Executive Office of the President. The White House's complex and extensive communications agency is staffed by members of each individual branch of the military. The U.S. Navy is responsible for the White House Mess and providing food services to the President, the First Family, any potential guests, and the President's staff. The White House Medical Unit is staffed by military doctors who have a round-the-clock presence in the White House and the official Physician to the President is usually an active-duty military officer.
While the Secret Service -- which includes the traditional plainclothes agents and the more visible uniformed division -- is responsible for protecting the President, his family, and the White House itself, the military also has a protective footprint in and around the White House complex. It's believed that amongst the White House's protective measures -- most of which are highly classified -- are anti-aircraft defenses, which are almost certainly manned by the military rather than the Secret Service. Marine Corps guards also are stationed at the White House (often seen opening and closing doors while manning the entry and exit points around the West Wing) as sentries and sometimes act as military valets during events hosted by the President in the White House. The role of the Marine sentries is purely ceremonial as opposed to protective.
And one of the most important White House responsibilities of the military is transportation. The White House Transportation Agency is responsible for all aspects of the President's travel, and the military works in tandem with the Secret Service on planning and carrying out the immense logistical challenges of transporting the President anywhere in the world -- a challenge magnified by the sheer size of Presidential traveling parties. A Presidential motorcade consists of, on average, 50-60 vehicles. And the majority of those vehicles actually have to be transported from the United States to wherever the President is traveling -- even if it is to several different foreign countries or continents. The Air Force is, obviously, responsible for the President's plane, along with any other aircraft making the trip which are usually carrying White House staff, members of the press, or cargo. For short distances that can be made by helicopter, the Marine Corps takes the lead. And any ground travel by motor vehicles is handled by the Army.
Security and the President's personal protective detail is always led by the Secret Service, but the military is responsible for many of the day-to-day logistics of the institution of the Presidency, which illustrates why the White House is an important military command and control base.

Missing persons, dog mention, military mention, fictional politics

3 hours earlier…
The interstate was starting to get crowded. There were certainly other ways to get around this sad stretch of asphalt, but only one road that ran past their objective: Cedar Hills. Which was apparently getting popular with the long haul truckers.
Agent Walker eased the van to a stop, giving Ghost a glance. The dog in the backseat was sniffing at the open window, breath fogging the glass as it whined to be let out. The radio was alive, humming with arguments and theories and lunch orders that one or two of the truckers were taking to the nearest town.
“You sure you have a contact here?”
Ghost merely raised a brow and looked to the back of the van.
“Any luck Casey?” (It felt wrong knowing these Specters had names; it felt wrong knowing their names. But apparently the Ghost trusted her enough to use them around her. Or at the very least, he trusted he could dispose of her before that would be a problem.)
“Mum’s on her way up - we owe her a Vegas heist.” The young Irishman snapped his flip phone closed, looking up with a grin as Ghost sighed.
“We don’t do casinos.”
“She does and you called her off one helluva pay day.”
“I thought she was a last resort.” Walker scanned the trucks ahead of them, spying a smaller vehicle pulled off the side of the road. “You said you had a man here.”
“A contact.” RJ corrected, nodding to a figure bobbing between the stopped vehicles. The mercenary hopped out the back doors of the van, their dog following despite its clear desire to take off down the road.
Walker couldn’t hear their conversation very well from inside the van, but it was evident from their body language that they were far from close, and this ‘Jaybird’ was surprised to see RJ.
“You - ”
“We need pressure on the blockade around this town. Can you assist?”
“Are you - I forget how pragmatic you are, Christ. What the hell are you doing here?” Jaybird was watching the van, eyes boring through the tinted glass as though they could see the Ghost behind it. “I’m not covering for you if - ”
“We’re trying o find someone.” RJ patted their dog’s head, the animal wagging its tail. “Dog tracked them up this way, they’re probably in the town ahead judging by the military blockade.”
“What do you need to find them for?” Jaybird’s body language shifted, defensive. They were looking for someone too.
“Work.”
“And you’re not gonna elaborate on that ‘work’ are ya?”
“No.” RJ glanced back at the van. “But I can tell you we need them alive.”
Jaybird bit their lip, losing a debate with themselves as they sighed and shoved their hands into their coat pockets. The wind was picking up, whipping around the dusting of snow across the pavement.
“I have invited quite a few contacts come to the road closure here - westbound and eastbound - but I’m not sure we can get you passed the blockade. I’ve needled them a few times and they’re…stubborn.” Jaybird’s voice dropped, quiet and almost pleading. “An old friend of mine came back from the dead and I’m trying to get them home. If you do get in - ”
“We can find them, if they’re there. What are we looking for?”
“Harrison Gomez, Black, about 5’11 - he probably looks like he just crawled out of hell.”
“Noted.” RJ glanced down the road, and Walker checked her rear view mirror to see half a dozen press vehicles and their satellite dishes rolling towards them. “Start running distraction as hard and as soon as you can. We’ll get in. And if we can, we’ll get Gomez out. Provided he doesn’t interfere with our target.”
—
“This isn’t going to work.”
“How many times have you infiltrated foreign military operations?”
“How time have you - ?”
“14. 17 if you include those times in Armenia, but that was more for survival than sabotage.” Ghost didn’t smile, but there was a thread of familiar confidence in his movements as he doubled checked his Kevlar vest.
“I forget that you’re fuckin’ mental.” Casey shrugged on the last of the camouflage uniform, the name embroidered on his chest reading ‘Simon Smith.’ “You pick these up at the bunker?”
“Of course. Now shut up and let me do the talking. Your American accent needs some work.”
“Aye, I know. Mum keeps givin’ me hell for it.” Casey sighed, tapping his earpiece to hear RJ and Walker on the other end of the line. “You two set? We’re ready to go.”
“Hold - I have an extra set of hands en route. He’ll be at your infil point in five.”
Ghost grumbled under his breath, curses undetected until he tapped his own earpiece.
“And who the hell do we have to babysit now?”
“Agent John Jackson, MI6 on loan from Interpol.” Walker either ignored or didn’t hear Ghost’s groan, her voice still even and pleasant. “When was the last time you flew a Blackhawk, Ghost?”
“Your point is dully noted. Does he know he’s working with us freelancers?”
“Yes. And I made him promise to be on his best behavior - besides, he doesn’t have jurisdiction here.” Walker paused, her voice soft. “If I wanted you arrested I wouldn’t give you a heads up.”
“Understood. Our friend from Vegas is also en route and will be infiltrating on her own. Just to keep an eye on things.”
“I trust she won’t get in the way?”
“As much as I trust your Interpol agent won’t.”
