- (laughs) I feel like I need a dummy. But, I know that I need my mask, because I have to be completely naked.

- We've been working really hard lately.

- Okay, on the first day that we were doing this, I noticed that there are some very cool people.

Caroline Rose’s Carefully Crafted Tragedy, Superstar

It’s hard to describe, but go with me on this: imagine someone beat-box imitating the sound an old record player makes when it gets to the end but doesn’t stop spinning. That is the first glorious sound on "Nothing’s Impossible,” the opening track of Superstar, the latest album by crimson hero Caroline Rose. It is wound tightly around its titular concept. It’s also an enormous amount of fun.

Our starlet protagonist is a heightened version of Rose herself, who has grown considerably since her previous LP, LONER. On that effort, she proved herself to be a deft songwriter, executing dense, mostly silly stories on each track. And their variety in style and sound made it a collection that, despite its haphazard narrative, inspired repeat listens from front to back.

Maintaining that grinning enthusiasm, Rose made sure that Superstar had a clear emotional throughline. She told Atwood Mag, “I gave it a lot of thought – I had a whiteboard with all the songs laid out. I was like ‘This is what I need to feel, this is how it needs to feel on this track, during this track…’” Not to mention the lyrical motifs that sneak up on you like a Shyamalan twist.

LA gets pigeonholed as the place where people go to chase their dreams, which makes it perfect fodder for this record. Rose is based in New York, the other concrete jungle where dreams are made, but the old glamour of Hollywood overcomes her alter-ego; “I'm moving to LA, I'll weekend in Paris,” she declares on “Got To Go My Own Way.” Her destiny called from the Chateau Marmont, and then she’s leaving Paris behind for a beach in Southern France on “Pipe Dreams.”

Of course the journey on Superstar is more than just physical. Rose arranged the album like a Shakespearian tragedy, give or take an act, where each few songs mark the next (psychological) stop on the way to stardom. And in every chapter, there is a considerable lack of chill: there’s “Freak Like Me” for obvious reasons; “Command Z” spirals in on itself, quite literally; and “Do You Think We’ll Last Forever?” even features an homage to “Bad Romance” (unintentionally? I saw that "Applause” shirt in the “Feel the Way I Want” video, so I suspect we have a little monster in our midst).

Yet, among all the silliness, there is such heart. The production breathes like a humble analog recording, embellished only on the edges in a similar style to the White Stripes or Arcade Fire. That leaves the spotlight open to shine directly on Rose and her entrancing melodies or subtle wisdom; “I Took a Ride,” the album’s closer, is the best of both worlds.

Visually represented by the character on the cover, our protagonist is at the end of the line, having become entirely disillusioned by fame. She has a keen determination to win back her lover, not unlike the buzzing mosquito rustling through some cellophane, but lest we forget where our greatest strength lies: “Some men might think that/A woman is weak because she cries/But nothing is stronger than a lover's lonely tear.”

Keep You Safe (Spin-off) // Seungcheol

Word count: 2.9k

Summary: Keep You Safe was a story about Seungcheol, a VIP whom you were tasked to protect as his secret bodyguard. But what if it was the other way around? You, the most normal out of normals, never thought that you would be of interest to anything or anyone so it was quite a shock to find out that you were being targeted and that you had a secret bodyguard.

A/N: WAIT SHOOT THERE WAS A MISTAKE. TAKE TWO!

"No! Don't download the app!" your mom exclaimed, grabbing her phone from your hands.

"Mom. I told you countless times already—"

"They can gather information easily through these things," she said, cancelling the download. "I told you. We’re being watched. We have to be careful."

You closed your eyes and sighed. It's one of those moments again. Just when will your mom believe you that downloading a social media app is (to some extent) harmless?

You watched her in silence as she tapped on multiple things on her phone screen, the keypad sounds ‘tacking’ being the only thing you can both hear. She's been complaining about her Facebook account getting logged out again and again from her browser since yesterday not that it was the first time it ever happened.

"Mom," you laughed, "we're nobodies. No one's interested in us. We don't have anything that anyone would want to steal or whatever. We're not important people! Can't you just let me download the app for you? Then you won't have to worry about getting logged out all the time." But your mom merely pursed her lips and silently tapped on her phone, ignoring you.

"Fine," you said, resigning to your bag and preparing to leave. "See you after class." You were nearly out of the door when she called out again.

"Honey?"

You looked back. Your mom, phone and Facebook worries now forgotten, had eyes of unease reaching out to you as they always did whenever you left the house.

Her small frame projected the years she spent working inside and outside the home for as long as you can remember. Her eyes were sunken and seem to have seen so much of the world. Her hair was lined with gray and white though not fully. Her skin, though still beautiful, showed that she wasn't as young as she used to be. You can't help but wonder again: after all those years of hardship—working in an environment that demanded her time and health, going through loss and through life without a partner—just how much strength did she had in her to raise you, her far-from-perfect child, and care for you alone to this day?

You couldn't help but smile in admiration towards the hero of your life in front of you, forgetting the worries that she has been trying to make clear time and time again. "Yeah?"

She returned your smile softly but not without the same small pool of unease that formed every time she gave you those eyes. "Be safe."

"Morning sunshine!" A familiar voice called out from the jungle of a hall you were in and you turned to see your best friend weaving his way through the students behind you.

It was Monday morning. Somehow, the college board of directors thought it would be nice to have the most delightful day of the week packed with classes. No wonder your best friend took some time to catch up to you.

"Hey, Josh."

Joshua, now walking right next to you, peeked to take a look at your face. "Huh. The sun has a cloud in front of her today. You okay?"

"Well, they did say it's going to rain today," you said, avoiding the rushing students coming your way. "I'm...fine."

"Is it that thing again?"

You shrugged. "Mom...she's at it again with the whole security thing and being watched by who knows what. And the eyes. The way she looks at me every time I go out just bothers me. It's as if I'm never coming back, you know? I know it's nothing but I can't help but get worried. Josh," you turned to him, not wanting the words to spill, "do you think...maybe...maybe..."

"—you're actually a secret royalty living a fake life and now those people looking for you have found you?" he finished with a small grin.

"What kind of—no, dumbass," you said, hitting him on the shoulder as he laughed. "And if there's any royalty in this school, it's you, you know?"

"Am not."

"Then am I lying Mr. Hong Jisoo who has a bigass family-owned chain of cafes and restaurants all over the state, which, may I remind, Mr. Hong Jisoo hasn't accompanied me to as of yet as payment for leaving me behind and partnering up with other people for our project in Management class?"

"I told you already, they grabbed me first before I can grab you!" he laughed. "And remind me again later this week, okay? Promise. You can eat whatever you want."

"See? Royalty." You smiled in triumph as you arrived at the small auditorium.

But as you sat on your usual seat at the back, a couple of rows away from his, the taste of small victory wore off and your worries started coming in again.

You watched as he sat on the seat next to you, a thing he always does before class. "What if the stress is getting to her?" you started again. "She's been working nonstop, Josh. My whole life, she's been working job after job. I have no idea how she's never gotten sick before but what if..."

You didn't have the courage to say the words but in reality, they have been swimming in and out of your mind for a while now. Sure, she's never gotten sick before but you know firsthand how the mind can be a dangerous battlefield.

Joshua sighed and reached out, patting the top of your head gently. "Just try to be there for her, I guess. Listen to her and, I don't know, just be patient, maybe?" he said with a soft smile.

That's what you liked about your best friend. Though he was your age, there's this older brother side to him that you can't help but be thankful for especially with the garden of anxieties growing in you for the past years. He was like a gardener that helped pull out the weeds for you or with you or at least helped you live with them for a while.

"Uh..."

Your attention was brought to a guy in a blue cap, a classmate, standing behind Joshua. It was your seatmate, a handsome guy who, 40% of the time, was either painfully awkward or painfully talkative with his silent commentaries about class. The remaining 60% would be him trying not to fall asleep. Seungcheol, as you found out after asking him out of concern, was a working student.

Joshua immediately stood up. "Morning, man."

"Morning," Seungcheol replied to him before turning to you. "Morning."

"Morning."

You both watched Seungcheol as he settled in his seat and put his cap away in his backpack before rummaging for whatever it was. His eyes...were his dark circles always that noticeable?

"Well," Joshua said, bringing your attention back to him, "let's talk about it later?" He patted your head a few more times before going back to his seat just as the professor arrived.

You tried not to think too much about what was happening and instead tried to focus on your enthusiastic professor dancing around the board with his Xs and Ys. It was a good distraction too or else your worries would've eaten you away, not to mention you would have nothing to answer for your future tests. That and you would've noticed your seatmate stealing glances at you with unrest painfully obvious in his eyes.

Was it a good thing or a bad thing? You weren't sure. But having a discussion about your worries with Joshua after class would have to wait.

"Sorry."

"I know, I know. Your world needs a superhero and you have to go. Can't I really go with you, though?" you asked bargaining for the second time. "I could just go and eat chicken while you're in your meeting. That way your debt would be gone before you know it."

"What and you get to eat alone? Without me? I need my healing time too, you know?"

"Healing time?" you said with a laugh. "I guess you can call it that."

It was nearly 5 in the afternoon and the longest day of your week is finally coming to an end with every step you took away from the school.

"But hey, you own the thing," you continued, now nearing the edge of the campus. "You can eat chicken and have your healing time anytime you want."

"I can't, okay? It's not exactly healing if you're eating alone. Besides," he turned back to you with the car behind waiting for him, "you need a friend," he smiled. "Or else, you'll binge eat and whine about how your pants won't fit anymore afterward."

"You're such a babysitter. D’you know that?" you asked, rolling your eyes at him.

"Aren't you grateful?" he laughed before going in. "Chat me up, okay? See ya!"

You forced a small smile and waved as he closed the door, watching the car drive away in silence. It’ll be a few days before you share a class and a schedule with him again. Once more, you were left to your thoughts.

Or so you thought.

The way home was supposed to be a short one but for some ridiculous reason, you had to make it otherwise.

It started a couple of days ago. Almost every day on your way home, there would be this chilly feeling of you being followed. You tried to chase the thought away thinking that it's the worries and your current 'mom problem' getting to you.

You shook your head. Now you're just getting worried about your worries getting you worried.

But the feeling just won't go away today. Usually, you would only look behind and see other commuters walking past you, maybe even catching a bus ready to leave from the bus stop, and the feeling would stop. Nothing else would happen after but today was definitely different.

You tried to stick to open spaces, even going to shops and pretending to do something there but even when you didn't see anyone, it was still disconcerting. It was like having another shadow, apart from yours, but not seeing where it is. And this time, it felt awfully near.

You tried not to hurry, even humming a song to mask your growing fear as you went down the steps to the subway but inside, your chest was pounding and you were about ready to scream in case anything happened.

You turned to the right and dreaded what was before you. You've always hated this part of the tunnel. Only a handful of people used it at this hour and it doesn't help that there was a long way to go until you get to a place with more people.

You took a deep breath and pulled out your umbrella from your bag.

Well, if anyone tries anything, I could at least smack them in the face with this.

With your heart beating fast and your umbrella tightly in your hand, you walked through the tunnel and silently prayed for everything to just be your mind playing tricks on you. It would've helped except that there were sounds of footsteps behind you that was not too near yet not far too.

It was off rhythm, you thought, as if trying not to be too obvious.

You heard the man (you assumed it was a man) cough, even talking to someone, maybe on his phone. But as you neared another corner, the footsteps tuned unhesitant and that made you all the more hurry.

Your feet weighed like bricks that you were dragging in front of the other. Chills kept running down your spine and you can tell, sweat was starting to form on your forehead.

Just a little more, you cried inside, willing yourself to make the corner in safety.

A presence hovered by your shoulder,

"Excuse—"

"Hey—ow!"

You caught your scream in your throat just in time for you to realize who you just hit.

"What was that for?" the guy asked, rubbing his left arm. "I told you to wait for me, didn't I?" he asked, not minding the look of disbelief now splashed on your features.

"Seungcheol?"

"I know my jacket is soft but it still hurts, you know?" he said, still rubbing his arm. But then he looked to his right, just a few feet behind you, adjusted his cap and smiled. It was the same smile he had earlier but even you, who has only exchanged greetings and short comments with him, knew: that wasn’t his normal smile. "May I help you?"

You looked back to who he was talking to and behind you was a man—just as you thought—with a phone in his hand and a look of surprise on his face.

"I—Sorry. I—" he said, his hands animatedly trying to convey whatever he was trying to say. "Is this Exit 3?" he finally asks after a short moment of silence.

"This is Exit 4," Seungcheol replied with the smile still on his lips. "You should’ve taken the left from the stairs if you wanted to go to Exit 3," he said, pointing to the end of the tunnel where you came from. He continued to stand there with his smile.

What's happening? you wanted to ask but you just noticed how heavy your breathing was at the moment.

"Ah. Yes," the man looked around, a few seconds passing by before he finally turns and walks away.

"Now," Seungcheol started, once the man was out of sight. He turned to you with the same smile still on his face. "Why did you leave without me, princess?"

"Seungcheol."

A smile. "Wait."

"Seungcheol."

A head shake. "Not yet."

"Choi Seungcheol."

He flinched but not without smiling afterwards. "Yes, princess?"

You crumpled your right hand into a fist while looking down at your left hand held captive by the guy walking next to you. "What. the hell. is this?"

Seungcheol continued to make his way through the crowd with you in tow. Since the tunnel incident, he's had your hand tightly in his. In the subway. Out of the subway. And now in the street. With your legs that almost turned to jelly and your heart trying to keep up with what just happened, it was, at first, a help. But almost half an hour has passed since then and all that he was doing was dragging you along.

"And stop calling me princess. It's weird."

"It's uh...just put up with it for a little longer, okay?"

"Seungcheol."

"Please?" he asked again, his eyes still busy scanning the way. "Just pretend we’re close friends and don’t mention anything about what happened. Just until I'm sure you're safe."

You opened your mouth once more to reply but nothing came out. Did he know?

With that in thought, you allowed him to pull you along a little further in twists and turns until you finally convinced him that your legs were on fine and that you were safe in your own street, now just a little ways from your house.

"Thank you," you breathed, exhaustion now catching up.

"Don't sweat it. It—"

You were waiting for him to finish but when you turned to look at him, he just smiled at you, his dimple showing from his cheek.

"How'd you know?"

"Huh?"

"My house." You stopped right in front of your front yard and nodded towards your humble little place of dwelling.

"I-uh-didn't?" he answered, his eyes shifting from you to your house behind you. "I was just walking along, tryin' to feel if we were in the right direction or not," he explained with a small laugh.

"Sketchy but whatever. Thanks again. We don't really talk but you really helped me today. A lot. Sorry for hitting you too."

Seungcheol shrugged as he placed his hands inside his pockets. "It's fine." He bit his lower lip and the look of concern was back in his face. He bounced on his feet before nodding towards your house. “You should go in.”

Just then, the screen door opened and you heard what would be your mother walking towards you. "Honey? What is this?"

"Mom. I—"

"Seungcheol?"

“A man—” You blinked. You took a second to think if you heard her right. "You know him?" you asked, watching your mom stare at your classmate.

Again. It's those eyes again.

Seungcheol stepped forward. "I—"

"A man? She wasn't harmed, was she? What happened?"

"Mom, what are you—Seungcheol's a friend from school. He helped me today—"

"Did they approach her? Seungcheol, did they try to get near her?"

Your eyes switched from your mom with her hand now tightly holding your arm and to Seungcheol who looked weirdly defeated. "Mom. What are you talking about?"

"I'm sorry," Seungcheol finally answered, briefly glancing at you before looking straight to your mother. "One of them got too near her in the subway. I had to step in. I'm afraid I may have just confirmed their speculations."

You watched the color from your mom's face get drained and you could just feel her grip losing strength. "Mom," you said, your hand quickly supporting her by the shoulder. "What is going on?"

You turned to Seungcheol who was just looking at you in silence. "Can either of you please tell me what the hell is going on?" The heart in your chest pounded and you found yourself unable to speak any more.

"I'm sorry," Seungcheol finally said, bringing you back to your senses. "I'm sorry you're now in this kind of situation. You shouldn't be. But there’s no turning back now."

"What situation? Turning back from what? Seungcheol. What's happening? And who...are you?"

Maybe it was the desperation in your voice or the unknown tears that were starting to form but his hand that was about to reach for your hand withdrew immediately. Seungcheol looked crestfallen.

Your heart still hasn't calmed down and you doubt that the answer to your question will help it to be. Nonetheless, you had to know.

Seungcheol took a deep breath and looked you straight in the eye. "I'm your bodyguard, y/n and I'm here to keep you safe."

7 From The Women is a segment here on Independent Artist Buzz where we ask some of the industries finest seven questions. During this time of accusations and the lack thereof, we think it’s important to give women a voice. We chose to ask seven questions to honor the seven Wiccan clans.

Kristen Rae Bowden is a beautiful turmoil of tenderness and willfulness. It’s a paradoxical sentiment also evident in her artistic sensibilities. In her upcoming debut, Language and Mirrors, she fluidly, and authentically, inhabits earthy Americana and majestic orchestral rock.

What have you been working to promote lately?

In November 2018 I released my first album, entitled “Language and Mirrors.” On March 15 2019 I will release my first music video from the album. The video is for my song “It Isn’t About You.”

I wrote “It Isn’t About You” while living in a screened-in-shack with no power on the Big Island of Hawaii. I was 22, fresh from college, excited by the idea of living “off the grid”, and very much in love with a young man whose family owned land in Hawaii. After we moved there, however, our relationship quickly deteriorated, practically turning to dust before my eyes. I felt powerless to save it, or leave.

I found myself on a metaphorical island, as well as a real one, and my feeling of isolation stemmed from my obsession with the unhealthy relationship. It became difficult for me to imagine myself outside of it; I no longer felt whole on my own.

Even without electricity, I remained a night owl. I stayed up alone in the tiny dark house on the edge of the jungle, drinking wine, and writing poetry by candlelight. This is how I wrote “It Isn’t About You”: as part of a long, freeform poem. (It is one of my only songs where I wrote the lyrics first.)

Later, I put the poem to music, after I finally got the courage to leave the relationship, and I’d steadied my mind. The song is about making that return to yourself and your own joys, strengths, and needs. It is also about taking responsibility for your own choices, so that you never feel (unnecessarily) like a victim, and you can move on.

The music video for “It Isn’t About You” will premiere on Facebook Premiere on Friday March 15 at 1:00 pm.

Please tell us about your favorite song written, recorded or produced by another woman and why it’s meaningful to you.

I think, after all these years, my favorite track written by a woman is still Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You”. The melody starts out conversational, understated, and then it soars! The simplicity of the instrumentation creates such an intimate experience, you feel like she’s in your living room, singing right in your ear. You hear every word, which is perfect because her lyrics go straight to the heart.

The beauty of the poem alone overwhelms me. Joni has a way of writing lyrics that are very specific to her own experience, and full of imagery, but when I listen to them, I feel like they are about me too. Much like an abstract painting where different people will see different things, Joni’s artful words allow you to color them with your own experience. This makes me feel truly known, and comforted somehow as a human being, because I know I’m not alone.

What does it mean to you to be a woman making music/in the music business today and do you feel a responsibility to other women to create messages and themes in your music?

When I decided I wanted to become a career musician, I didn’t think at all about my gender. I just knew I wanted to make music; that’s all I thought about.

Now, I believe that as a woman in the music industry, I have the opportunity to showcase a more feminine (as in the divine) incarnation of strength. As a culture I think we view strength in a very masculine way; it often means hardness, stoicism. I believe we tend to ignore the strength that it takes to be vulnerable... the strength that lies in open-heartedness and flexibility. After all, a branch that cannot bend is more likely to break. In my songs, I find myself wanting to express this: how brave one must be to remain open-hearted. I think it is something I have to offer that has to do with my womanhood and femininity.

When I write I honestly don’t feel a responsibility to create certain messages and themes in my music. I write according to my feelings, so those end up being the messages and themes. However, when I write a song about a certain moment in my life, I definitely listen critically to the song and ask myself what kind of message it is going to send into the world.

Once I wrote a song about a previous boyfriend cheating on me with a girl who I really thought was my friend. They both lied to me about it for several weeks. It was overwhelmingly hurtful. Some men say they have a “bro’s code” to not let women come between them. So, I wrote this song about the lack of a “girls code”, and basically sang about how I knew my boyfriend at the time was going to lie to me, that was obvious. But I never expected my woman friend to be a part of it, sneaking around and lying to me also.

Later I realized I couldn’t release the song, because of the message one might take from it. My lyrics ended up sounding too much like a woman who blames the other woman when her significant other lies to her, instead of holding him responsible, and also taking responsibility for the choice she has made to be with him. What that particular “friend” did to me was unkind, but I don’t ever want to sound like a woman who puts other women down as a group. I didn’t want to risk being interpreted in that way.

I hope to be a voice of catharsis, empowerment, and empathy.

What is the most personal thing you have shared in your music or in your artist brand as it relates to being female?

My most personal song is “My Father’s Daughter”. My Dad was an extremely charismatic, artistic, and captivating man. He was also quite the womanizer. He passed away when I was 18, and I still miss him every single day.

I think as a girl, when you grow up with a Dad who is your absolute favorite person, but over time you learn about some of his negative proclivities, you’ll have some kind of emotional reaction. And the reaction will be based (at least in part) on how you are his daughter. If you were his son, you might respond quite differently.

“My Father’s Daughter” is really about me getting into a relationship with a man who had also lost his artistic (and womanizing) father. He had a daddy-backstory similar to mine, but he had responded in a completely different way. We could understand each other better in some ways due to the similarities in our respective Dads’ personalities, but in other ways we really had no hope of ever understanding each other.

The song also has to do with the fact that sometimes, there is no stronger bond than shared grief.

I think this is the most personal thing I’ve written as it relates to being female, because it’s specific to what we would call “Daddy issues”. Anyone can have Daddy issues, regardless of their gender, but being female definitely effects how these complicated feelings play out in one’s life. This is true for me, at least.

What female artists have inspired you and influenced you?

So many! I’ve already mentioned Joni Mitchell. I just finished reading “Just Kids” and Patti Smith is a poetic hero. Others include Joan Jett, Nina Simone, Bonnie Raitt, Aretha Franklin, Patsy Cline, Erykah Badu, Zap Mama, Emmylou Harris, Iris DeMent, Janis Joplin, Grace Slick, Stevie Nicks, Carole King, Amy Winehouse, Bjork, Lady Gaga, Billie Holiday, Ani DiFranco, and Tracy Chapman.

Who was the first female artist you saw that made you want to create music / be in the business?

When I was 19, my sister and I went to see Ani DiFranco. I remember loving how the audience was overwhelmingly female, right as I walked in. I noted to myself how rare it is to be in the company of mostly women, at least for me. Ani sang her songs and I think everyone in the theater was affected, you could just feel it in the air. I laughed and I cried. I marveled at how she connected with each member of the audience personally ; she made each of us feel like we’d met her. Each of her songs consistently blew me away with her confessional storytelling. She stirred my emotions and completely inspired me.

The next night I went into a practice room at my college, played the piano, and wrote my first real song. I didn’t mean to write it ; it surprised me. It was about my Dad dying, which had happened about a year before. I scribbled it on a cocktail napkin that I’ve saved ever since.

Do you consider yourself a feminist? If so why and if not why?

I definitely consider myself a feminist. Women deserve equal rights and bodily autonomy, period. I grew up very privileged, in a community/culture that told me I could be anything I wanted, so I have to admit I was rather shocked to find out that some people still think women aren’t supposed to do certain jobs or have certain roles in life. I also grew up in a very homogenous community. For a long time I was very ignorant when it comes to the idea of intersectional feminism, and I still have a lot to learn about how feminism can exclude the experiences and points of view of women of color and LGBTQ women. It is important to me to be an ally to all women, especially those in minority communities, as they are the ones who are most effected by sexism and discrimination. Learning how to be a good ally is an ongoing process, and I consider it my responsibility to educate myself about issues outside of my personal experience. All in all, I am a feminist because women are still so marginalized, all over the world. Women’s rights are human rights, and as long as things remain unbalanced, this deserves our constant attention.

Mark Harmon and His Family Enjoy Staying out of the Hollywood Spotlight: "It's Who We Are" (EXCLUSIVE)

On NCIS, no case ever stumps naval investigator Leroy "Jethro" Gibbs, but in real life, Mark Harmon, 66, has long been befuddled by one mystery: fame. "My parents kept things real — I had no idea they were famous," says the son of sportscaster Tom Harmon and actress Elyse Knox. "In fact, it didn’t hit me until one day when I was riding in the car with my father in Ann Arbor, MI — I was maybe eight and could barely see above the dashboard — and we stopped at a crosswalk. Suddenly, we were surrounded by people who recognized my dad and were really thrilled to see him. I remember looking at this man I thought I knew so well and thinking, Who are you?"

Millions of people ask the same question about Mark to this day. He’s the star of TV’s No. 1 drama yet he maintains an intense sense of privacy. He’s raised Sean, 30, and Ty, 25 — his sons with wife Pam Dawber, 66, with whom he recently renewed his vows in a quiet backyard ceremony — to keep similarly low profiles. "It’s not even a choice. It’s who we are," Mark explains. "We stay home. A lot. I’m not a Twitter guy or a Facebook guy. Our sons aren’t into that, either."

Interviews with Mark as well as his family members, friends, and co-workers reveal a portrait of a consummate professional who values his home life above all else — and keeps it separate from his career, even during periods of severe personal and professional stress. "Mark is a shining example of the way it should be done," NCIS co-star Sean Murray exclusively tells Closer. "He’s incredibly grounded, works hard, and knows that family counts most."

Those are lessons Mark learned early in life. "My father wanted me to be self-motivated," he recalls. "I was taught the only way to go about getting something was with everything you had." That he did, becoming a football star for UCLA and working as a roofer, carpenter, and shoe salesman before getting into acting at the urging of Ozzie Nelson, his sister Kristin’s father-in-law (she’d wed Ozzie and Harriet’s son, Ricky, in 1963).

"I’d never been on a set before," Mark says of his 1973 acting debut on the Nelson family’s sitcom Ozzie’s Girls. "My character comes to the door in a gorilla outfit, and I got to say, 'My name’s Harry King Kong. Which way to the Empire State Building?'"

It was an inauspicious start, and the situation didn’t improve as Mark toiled in short-lived shows like the rescue drama 240-Robert (he played Deputy Dwayne "Thib" Thibideau) and the overheated soap Flamingo Road. He romanced Road co-star Cristina Raines for four years, but they split in 1984. "She will always be a very special lady to me," he said.

But Mark was looking for true love. "When I marry, I want it to be everything this town says it can’t be," he boldly declared in 1986. "I’m not into catting around." He met his match in Pam, who was introduced to him at a party thrown by a mutual friend. She had made a list of qualities she was seeking in a man — strength, intelligence, independence, sensitivity, sensuousness, warmth, and a sense of humor — and Mark ticked off every box. They wed in 1987, and Sean and Ty came along soon afterward.

While Pam had enjoyed success on the small screen with the sitcoms Mork & Mindy and My Sister Sam, she put her career aside to raise the kids. "I had children and it was like, 'I’m not going to chase this fame thing,'" Pam says. "I wanted to drive my kids to school. I wanted to be there for their birthdays and bring cupcakes and doughnuts. And I was very happy to do it."

Meanwhile, Mark’s career was really starting to cook with his breakout role as a heartthrob plastic surgeon on the critically worshipped hospital drama St. Elsewhere. But after three seasons, he felt lost in the teeming ensemble. "Mark’s a leading man, so I could understand his frustration," producer Tom Fontana tells Closer. "After all, he was a quarterback." In a groundbreaking plot twist, his heterosexual character contracted AIDS and left the show, but there were no hard feelings. "He did a great job with a challenging storyline," says Fontana. "We’ve stayed friends."

Trouble brewed on the home front, however: Kristin had gotten mixed up with drugs during her marriage to Ricky, and after the rocker died in a 1985 plane crash, she went off the deep end. Mark engaged in legal wrangling to win custody of her son, Sam, then 12, and convinced Kristin to enter rehab. "Nobody but my brother could have talked me into this, because I trusted him," Kristin said. Ultimately, Mark dropped his bid for custody and was granted visitation and Sam remained close to his mom until her death in April at age 72 from a sudden heart attack.

Mark and Pam have steered Sean and Ty clear of drugs and other temptations by being hands-on parents. That was another bit of hard-won wisdom for Mark. "I was in the jungles of New Guinea making a not-very-good movie [Till There Was You] when my firstborn took his first steps," he says. "No job is worth missing life’s most important moments."

He’s since served as a sterling role model to his sons, proving himself a real-life hero by saving two teens trapped in a wrecked Jeep near his LA home in 1996. Mark smashed the windshield with a sledgehammer and extracted the youths before their vehicle exploded. "I owe everything to him," said one of the survivors. "I have no doubt I wouldn’t be alive."

Mark’s career hit a lull in the 90s, but a guest shot on The West Wing put him back on the TV map, and in 2003 along came NCIS. The show had a rocky launch, as Mark clashed with creator Donald Bellisario over scripts arriving late and a zoo-like atmosphere on the set. Bellisario left and was replaced by Gary Glasberg, who became one of Mark’s closest friends and ran a tight operation, but Glasberg tragically died in his sleep at 50 in 2016. "That hit Mark very, very hard," an insider tells Closer.

Still, Mark righted the ship and continues to weather on-set storms, like co-star Pauley Perrette’s controversial recent departure amid allegations that Mark’s dog bit a crew member. "Mark’s very sensitive to the people around him," co-star Rocky Carroll assures Closer. "The reason it’s such a great working atmosphere is he wouldn’t have it any other way. You can just tell the kind of upbringing he had."

Mark leads by quiet example, à la Gibbs. "Like his character, he’s a functional mute," jokes Michael Weatherly, who left NCIS to star in his own CBS hit, Bull, in 2016. "Mark is a very old-fashioned, old-school gentleman, and I’ve learned a great deal at his side."

When fans recognize Mark — like they did his dad all those years ago in Ann Arbor — he remains the ultimate gent. "It’s hard to walk through airports even in the most out-of-the-way places without being surrounded by people who love the show — and that’s nothing to complain about," he says. "I’ve done TV shows where I walk through airports apologizing." No doubt he handled that with equal grace.

You look lovely and bright and colourful today TOYAH: Well, I found it really important during lockdown and even in semi out of lockdown to dress up. HAYLEY: Yes, you're right. Absolutely. TOYAH: I don't think I've even had one pyjama day. Just literally I am going to get up and I'm going to wear my favourite clothes and I'm going to act as if the world is as normal

HAYLEY: Oh, I love this! You'll be so ashamed to me. I've had a couple of pyjama days ... eating Doritos. Don't judge me (they both laugh) But anyway, I know you been really busy in lockdown, haven't you? TOYAH: This is a very weird and I hope not a distasteful thing to say, but lockdown has being really OK for me and my husband. We’re both writers, so I've done about five children's books, which have just kind of silly nonsense, rhymes, things which I've illustrated. I'm doing a solo album and I get about 50 requests a day from people who just need geeing up and I have no problem with geeing people up. I really love doing it, so it's been very busy and it's helped me realise that I'm not ready to go back to gigs where I have to share the dressing room with my band. There's no toilet backstage and the stage is sticky with beer. I've realised no! I'm going to go back into art centres and theatres and festivals! It's really helped me sort myself out.

HAYLEY: Brilliant! I've also been watching your YouTube channel as well. It's "Toyah At Home", isn't it? TOYAH: Yes. "Toyah At Home" every Saturday, which brings my music to the fans and then on Sunday what I started as a thing to keep my husband Robert Fripp - oh got my glasses on! I’m going take them off ... HAYLEY: No, I like it. I like it! TOYAH: Do you like it, shall I keep them on? HAYLEY: Yeah! TOYAH: This is a first! ... To keep my husband, Robert Fripp, who's a world acclaimed guitarist, King Crimson, played with Bowie on “Heroes” and “Scary Monsters” ... to keep him engaged with the outside world. We've been doing quite ridiculous dance videos which he enjoyed. HAYLEY: They’re not ridiculous, they’re brilliant! I've seen them TOYAH: Good good. So that's all on Toyah official Facebook (NB She means Youtube) and it's been very, very rewarding for all of us.

HAYLEY: Just fabulous. We're going play out your first song “I Want To Be Free”. Talk us through the lyrics. Is it right that you actually started writing this when you were 14 at school? TOYAH: Yes, I'm severely dyslexic. You don't get over dyslexia, but what dyslexics are utterly brilliant at doing is bluffing their way I think to the top jobs in the world. Trump is probably dyslexic. He's definitely dyspraxic. So you've got wonderful artists ... I think Gary Numan could possibly be dyslexic. We find a way of acting normal within the world. So at the age of 14, I realised I should not be at school because the three R's were never going to work. I should have been at drama school or a music school, so in a maths lesson I was just writing down these words “I don't want to go to school, don't wanna be nobody's fool. I wanna be me, I wanna be free” and that's the birth of that song.

HAYLEY: Wow, I love that! I think I was the same in math as well. My parents always wanted me to get a C and I always got a D so it's not good,Toyah. We're going to play “I Want To Be Free”. Top Ten in 1981. Here we go. (Video plays) I want to talk about how it all started for you because I just look at you and I just think, wow, you're just born to be on stage - but it hasn't always been that way, has it? TOYAH: Not really. I was born in Birmingham, my family never believed I could be in show business. I'm ridiculously small. And when I was young, I had a very pronounced limp because I had one leg longer than the other, which is now being corrected. It was corrected when I was 51 and I'm now 62. HAYLEY: Wow, you look amazing by the way! I want to know your secret!

TOYAH: I've been through quite a lot, so movement and music as two related things mean a to me thus I was born to be on stage. I was born to be a performer. I was very lucky that the head of Pebble Mill, which was where BBC was based during the Birmingham period, up from about the 1950’s into the 70’s. The head of that building said to my parents “your daughter is dyslexic. She is a star in the making. Get her out of normal school and put her in drama school” and he got me into a Birmingham drama school.

And I never looked back and within a year I was the youngest member of the National Theatre in London. I starring in a play with Warren Clarke, Kate Nelligan and then I went on to work with Derek Jarman. I made a movie with Katharine Hepburn, directed by George Cukor, who directed “Star Is Born” with Judy Garland. And then I ended up at these really high end art places - ICA, the Royal Court Theatre.

I had a fabulous beginning in acting, but all along I was developing my music because I realised that if I was going to become a singing superstar, I had to do it young. I couldn't leave it on the back burner as a hobby. I had to go for it hell for leather.

HAYLEY: Yeah, because your voice is just incredible, it's almost operatic, isn't it?

TOYAH: I studied opera. Even though I don't think I fitted into my school, they taught ballet which is why I went there to help me with my disability, to give me balance and strength. It also taught music, which is the only O level I got. And it taught me opera. So my first singing lessons which I had - two weeks with German and Italian opera. HAYLEY: God! Toyah, you'd be so ashamed with me - I can't sing a note. Honestly, I've tried on this programme before. TOYAH: Really? HAYLEY: Yeah, maybe you could give me some lessons, Toyah! (laughs) TOYAH: I don't believe people can't sing because people can express so you may say you can't sing, but there is a form of music out there that you would fit. HAYLEY: Wow! I would take that! We’re going to go into your next song. “Thunder InThe Mountains” I really feel like this is when you are bringing in the punk energy here, don’t you, Toyah?

TOYAH: Yes! Totally bringing in the punk energy. I had started my career in 1976, the end of - into 77’, so I was very much a punk rocker right through to 1980 and the majority of my audience was serious punk rockers. So I felt I needed to bring that energy with me into the new wave into the New Romantic because my first international hit was 1981, so that's a long career before you have commercial success. So “Thunder In The Mountains” (sings the song) I mean, it's all about pogoing. It's all about rebellion, so it's very much bringing punk into the 1980’s.

HAYLEY: Well, we love it. Is bringing back a lot of happy memories, I know, for our viewers. Here is “Thunder In The Mountains”. Number 4 in 1981 (Video plays) We've got a question from one of our viewers, Simon. He wants to know what's your favourite TV show that you've worked on because he's just been watching you on “Invasion Planet Earth” and said he really enjoyed that. He said it was very well made. TOYAH: Oh, that's so lovely. That was a crowdfunded movie and it was made for £60 000 and it just looks so good and I loved doing it. I did it as a favour to the director, Simon Cox, and I sang the outro song as well, which is excellent song. So what’s my favourite TV programme I've ever worked on? This is such a difficult question to answer because everything I do I tend to love with a passion.

Doing “French and Saunders” at the end of the 80’s singing “Because The Night” with them on a huge wooden wheel in the background distracting me was a joy, but I would say they are slightly pipped to the post when I did Kenny Everett (below)

HAYLEY: Oh wow! Totally brilliant! TOYAH: He was just a master and you might be realising by now if you've watched my my clips on Sunday is that I love comedy. I don't think I'm a stand-up comedian but I think or like to think that I do have slightly good comic timing. So to be on Kenny Everett and to watch a master. Wow! It was fabulous!

HAYLEY: Fabulous! I want to know have you ever recovered from your challenge on “I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here” because I was watching it last night and I was like my goodness you are brave!

TOYAH: Thank you! It was a pretty mean thing to do because they put me in a cesspit, but what they also did is they used a chemical that stayed on my skin for five days and that chemical smelt of sewerage so they then put me back in the camp where no one would come near me.

What I experienced doing “Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here” was that all the beautiful women and there were many - you had Daniella Westbrook, you had Catalina ... there was quite a few others, but they were all beautiful. They all got helped when they needed the gunge washed off them. With me ... I walked into the camp and everyone parted like that – like the great waves. It was like “we're not coming anywhere near you, you smell!”

HAYLEY: But you got five stars, didn’t you? TOYAH: Yeah, I did really well. HAYLEY: Yeah you did! Well, we loved it. TOYAH: Another thing - I went into the jungle weighing about 7 stone 10 pounds and I came out weighing seven stone. HAYLEY: Aww yeah, I don't know how you do it. TOYAH: Well, it was a fabulous diet! HAYLEY: Straight to the Versace hotel afterwards though. That’s the reward! TOYAH: Yes! HAYLEY: Next song, “Brave New World” is just brilliant. Talk us through the memories for this.

TOYAH: This is produced by Steve Lillywhite, who was married to Kirsty MacColl and Steve Lillywhite then went on to produce U2. I'm very very proud of this song and it's off an album called The Changeling from 1982, which is about to be re-released at the end of this year or the beginning of next year. It's a very mature album for me, and this single is a very mature single and the video has won awards around the world. It was a ground breaking video. It was one of the most expensive videos to be made at the time with £32,000. But to put that into perspective, I think three years later Michael Jackson made “Captain EO” for the Epcot Centre for $10 million, so that shows the journey of video. This was the beginning of video, the beginning of MTV. MTV had only been launched in August of 81’, so it was ascending, but I'm really, really proud of this. HAYLEY: Yeah, I love the video to this one. From 1982 here is “Brave New World” (Video plays) Now we have got a quick fire 80’s quiz for you

TOYAH: Oh good! HAYLEY: She's ready to go! So - favourite TV show from the 80’s? TOYAH: "Young Ones"! HAYLEY: Ah! Good Choice! A thing you wish you could bring back from the 80’s? TOYAH: There’s 2 things. JR of “Dallas” or the rah rah skirt. HAYLEY: Oh yes! I like that! Best outfit from the 80’s? That's going to be hard for you because I'm pretty sure you've got an amazing wardrobe! TOYAH: Yes, my designer - she was called Melissa Caplan. She made everything by hand, but she made me a dress that was actually a Japanese Samurai outfit, so it was a Samurai armour, but made in cotton, which she painted. It was utterly beautiful. I still have it and I still love wearing it.

HAYLEY: Ah, we love that! Favourite hairdo from the 80’s? Again (Toyah is furiously poining at her hair) I mean how can we decide this? TOYAH: You've just seen it – “Brave New World”. The pink and orange hair, standing up. For me … I nailed that one!

HAYLEY: You did! I just haven't got the confidence with my hair. I wish I did because it makes you feel so different, doesn't it, when you dye your hair TOYAH: You look beautiful, you don't need to dye anything! HAYLEY: OK. And best thing a fan sent you from the 80’s? TOYAH: I've got it here. This (a ring) arrived in a book from a palace in Saudi Arabia. It was a princess. She was a huge Toyah fan and obviously summered in the UK in London, the way the Saudi royals do for six months and she sent me a book and I opened the book and it was hollowed out and in it was a necklace and this ring and she said “I'm not allowed follow music but I absolutely love you” and that was about 1984. HAYLEY: God, it’s just beautiful! Oh how lovely! TOYAH: So I treasure that HAYLEY: Yes, I bet you do. Well, your next song “It’s A Mystery”. Yes! My favourite. This is your first appearance on Top Of The Pops. That was an instant hit, wasn't it?

TOYAH: And you know, it was hit because of a very lucky mistake. Melissa wasn't ready. Melissa Caplan, my costume designer, wasn't ready with the outfit I was going to wear and if that outfit was ready I'd have been leaping around the stage the way I normally do. So I wore instead a beautiful dress (above) by a designer, male designer called Brown, I can't remember his first name now, but he did all of Bowie's clothes for the “Heroes” album. And I just looked demure and beautiful, and there I was terrified on the set of Top Of The Pops, singing “It’s A Mystery” and just keeping still because I was in a dress and didn't know how to wear that dress as I never wore dresses. That I think was the winning factor that for the first and only time in my life I was really feminine because of that dress and it gave me a hit HAYLEY: Well, it did give you a huge hit! Here it is from 1981 “It’s A Mystery” (Video plays) Oh, Toyah! I could talk to you all day! It’s gone really quickly!

TOYAH: It does go really quickly, doesn't it, Hayley, when you're having fun! HAYLEY: Yeah! Let’s talk about the new projects because I know you've got a little bit of inside information for us, haven’t you? TOYAH: Yes, we're doing a Rewind tour and it's going to be a drive-in tour. So I can tell you the dates (reads the dates) Now, if those go well, we're going to carry on through September. That’s drive-in and they've managed to organise it that people can get out their cars and dance, which is quite a new concept because previously you had stay in cars, which is very unappealing. So that's Rewind. HAYLEY: This is such exciting news. I'm delighted because obviously everyone has had things cancelled, but it does look like things are coming back and things are being rescheduled.

TOYAH: Excuse the pun, but it's a brave new world and there's a lot of us out there who are just willing to perform. And also, I've got a movie coming out. “To Be Someone” which is nothing to do with “Quadrophenia”, but it does star myself, Leslie Ash, Mark Wingate, Gary Shail, who happened to have been in “Quadrophenia.” And it's a gangster comedy, so that's due out as well. Another another movie called “Give Them Wings” - which hopefully will make it out into the big world this year. At the moment it's at the Venice Film Festival. HAYLEY: Great stuff and we will definitely keep our eyes open for that. We’re going to leave you with “Sensational” of course, because Toyah has been sensational on today's show.
