This is a young plant of Parrotia persica (Persian ironwood, iron tree, ironwood) which becomes a wide-spreading, normally multi-stemmed deciduous tree or large shrub. In autumn the leaves turn yellow, red and purple falling to reveal the trunks of flaking bark and small crimson flowers on bare twigs.

Sketches of a Persian Ironwood, and Spring in Cambridge

Spring has sprung in Cambridge, and so I'm once again venturing out into the gardens and fields that surround me, equipped (as ever) with iNaturalist, my handy identification app. It is the season for Common Brimstone, an uncommonly pretty butterfly that is lime green, but looks neon yellow as it catches the sun – I had not thought the name appropriate until I saw a few of them flitting outside my window at midday, brighter than anything else in the sky.

Cambridge, though not far removed from Hertfordshire in distance, sports an entirely different blanket of spring flowers; snowdrops and winter aconite as the cold first breaks, then daffodils and crocuses and squills forming blue carpets ringing old trees, and now as spring settles in, and the days grow longer and hotter, anemones and starflowers dot the grasses and dance as they catch the breeze. It is a floral scene against the twiggy umbellifers of Hertfordshire, younger fields to older woodland; no bluebells, nor cow parsely, nor forget-me-nots that occur in nettled margins besides the paths; only flowers, and ivy with its smooth, shiny leaves.

I'm going to see my favourite tree today in the botanical gardens - it is a Persian Ironwood, which I first came across in a tour of the gardens with my PhD cohort. This ironwood is a sprawling tree with a densely woven canopy, a latticework of forking, looping branches that is disorientating to follow with the eyes, for the tree is a self-grafting one; separate branches will meet and rejoin, from the same tree and from different trees (at which point they are called 'gemels', as in gemini ‐ paired or twinned trees). A quick sketch before I leave - and a post to break the months long silence I have held on here!

Kerr - gorse. A shrub with nearly year-round bright yellow flowers and a pretty scent, but beneath are dense clusters of thorns. It’s a very hardy plant, able to recover quickly from fire, and is an invaluable resource to many wild animals.

Warrick - Persian ironwood. Related to the witch hazel genus, it’s a deciduous tree that can reach up to 40 feet high, and is known both for it’s extremely colorful fall foliage, and it’s pinkish-brown bark that flakes off to leave a mosaic of cinnamon, pink, green, and pale yellow patches.

Jay - angelica. A herb that’s know both for its intense, fragrant scent and natural anti-anxiety properties. Angelica closely resembles some poisonous species of plant, and might cause sunlight sensitivity or contact dermatitis. It’s said to taste like licorice.

RWBY Pokemon HC Pt.2 RWBY

Ruby Rose: Chikorita (Meganium), Weavile, Pawmi(Pawmot), and Starly(Staraptor)

Chikorita was a gift from Qrow, even though Tai feared that she was too young for a pokemon, but together they took on fierce oppement after enemy, in a way becoming her own living Crestent Rose.

Weavile was a Sneasel that evolved before Ruby met it, so it was great at causing trouble, but when Ozpin reveals that this was once Summer's pokemon, she takes it onto her team, hoping that it might lead to her mother. Pawmi though was found in an alleyway while she was wandering Beacon, and didn't want to depart from the small creature, it would evolve into Pawmot after they were running from Ironwood's forces, stopping in their tracks with its fierce eleltric punches.

Starly was caught after the fall at Beacon, and wouldn't fully evolve until she ascended and her pokey team followed in turn, with the Staraptor moving fast to kill that Curious Cat.

Yang Xiao Long: Torchic(Blaziken), Lucario, Pangoro, and Azurill.

Yang already had most of her pokemon fully evolved by the time that she started at Beacon, her strongest bond being with Blaziken, a bond that went so deep that when Adam silced off her arm, Blaziken had risen to aid her, but was taken done by Adam's overgrown fire cat, which ruined her partner's arm forever, making them the metal arm duo.

Luario and Pangoro were a packaged due when she caught them. One couldn't usally be found without the other. In a funny way it reminded her of Blake and herself, but unlike her pokemon she couldn't really elaborate on those feelings.

Azurill was caught when they were in the Ever After, being found while they were looking for Ruby, and in her grief the small baby mon thought to follow her everywhere. Even going as far as to sit on her shoulder, her tail dangling while they all held hands together after walking out of the portal.

Weiss Schnee: Snorunt(Froslass), Cetoddle/Ceitian, Rookide(Corviknight), and Darumaka/Darmanitan

Snorunt was forced onto her by her father, saying that she needed to learn on to care for things, if she was going to bring true honor unlike her sister. Snorunt was a tricky pokemon to train considering it liked to run away, but Klein and Weiss both caught onto its tricks pretty quick. Cetoddle she found in Atlas before she left, and thought that she found it due to her proudful demeanor, but instead the playful creature knocked her down as it tried to play with her. When it evolved it was because Weiss was in a tight spot, and took matters into its own fins.

Rookide was caught when she was kidnapped, it had flown in with Yang, without the fighter knowing and aided in battle againt Raven. It fully evolved when she arrested her father and he tried making his escape.

Darumaka was a firey lonely creature that challenged as they traveled to Atlas, and instead of letting the creature go, she allowed it to join her team. When it fully evolved it was because Weiss needed protection against Marrow, and ended up putting the Faunnus into his place.

Blake Bellodonna: Sprigato(Meowscarada), Persian, HootHoot/Noctowl), and Eevee.

Blake and Sprigato got along and were the rival pair to Adam and his Litten. When she watched Yang lose her arm, her partner retreated into it's ball and refused to leave. It only left when finally Adam was truly about to taste defeat and help to kill Incineroar, knocking the pokemon down with its master.

Persian was found dozing in Beacon, and gained a kinship with Blake, evantully being caught fully after the fall. Hoothoot was found when she was traveling back home, and on the return journey Eevee joined in.

Persian Ironwood and the Jade Vine (both at the Cambridge Botanical Gardens). The Jade Vine is currently flowering so I'm going to see it tomorrow.

The autumn colour of Parrotia persica (Persian ironwood) provides a setting for this peacock who lives in the arboretum at Marks Hall, Essex. This spreading deciduous tree or large shrub has flaking bark and small spidery red flowers on bare twigs in the winter.

Check out the bark on this guy! What a mosaic.

I was originally going to tag this as a monotypic plant, but to my surprise I just found out about the Chinese Ironwood, P. subaequalis. It was previously put into the witch-hazel genus, Hamamelis, then in a new genus of it's own, before finally having its DNA analyzed in 1997 leading to it's placement in Parrotia.

Species: Torterra

Nicknames: Spanch, Spinch, Tree boy

Traits: Persistent, Quirky, Eats anything!

Bio: Spinich is a young but strong male Torterra and yes that is how his name is spelt. His personality is nervous and shy at first, but very friendly when you get to know him! He is big but will most likely get much larger as he ages. On his shell, Spinach plants grow both naturally and hand planted. His tree is a variation similar to the Persian Ironwood tree and loses its leaves in the cold weather (as pictured).

My son's Troop planted and dedicated a tree in his memory at his favorite park. I chose a Persian Ironwood because of how magnificent it grows to be. And because of the beauty of it during each season. Just like my son.
