Update on the Hamburg Shooting (11.03.2023)

At 12:00 noon, the police held a press conference. Present, in addition to senior police officers, was the Senator for the Interior (equivalent to the Minister of the Interior) Andy Grote. Hamburg, like Bremen and Berlin, is one of the 16 (city) states that make up the Federal Republic of Germany. Beside him, gave information: the head of the State Security, the head of the Protective Police, the Police President of Hamburg and the head of the Public Prosecutor's Office of Hamburg. The Senator of Interior informed the public that 8 people were killed. Among those killed is an unborn child in the seventh month. The mother of the child survived the attack, but sadly, the child, a girl, was hit in the womb and died. The head of the State Protection Service said that the other victims were four men and two women, as well as the aforementioned child. Those killed are between 33 and 60 years old. All the fatalities are German Srtaatsangehörige and died from gunshots. In addition, 6 women and 2 men between the ages of 23 and 46 were injured. Six of these people are German nationals, one woman is a Ugandan national and another woman is a Ukrainian national. Four of these persons were critically injured and suffered multiple gunshot wounds. The crime was committed by Philipp F., a 35-year-old German citizen. The man had never before attracted the attention of the criminal police. He was also found dead at the scene. Apparently, he shot himself when the police forces entered the building. Philipp F, who was born in Bavaria, was a former member of the local congregation of the Jehovas Witnesses, which he left on his own free will around 18 months ago. F. did not have a criminal record. As a sport shooter, he had been legally in possession of an HK P30 pistol since December 12, 2022, following the issuance of a weapons possession card on December 6, 2022, which was also the murder weapon. In January 2023, the police received an anonymous tip-off that Philipp F. was suffering from a suspected but not medically diagnosed mental illness. The police were also warned of the alleged perpetrator's aggressive attitude toward Jehovah's Witnesses. As a result, an unannounced inspection of the weapons and weapons storage was carried out in February 2023, which, however, did not reveal any significant abnormalities. Rather, F. had cooperated with the police. His weapon had been locked in a safe in accordance with legal requirements, and only a single cartridge had been on the safe . When it was pointed out that this did not comply with the legal requirements, F. apologized and immediately locked up the cartridge. At that time, the Hamburg police had no legal basis on which to seize F.'s weapon.

Even before the actual crime, the perpetrator had fired 10 shots at a woman in a car parked in the parking lot there. However, the woman suffered only a minor injury and was able to drive the car from the parking lot. She informed the police shortly afterwards. From that point on, the police received about 47 emergency calls. One of these emergency calls came directly from the building. While the police officer was talking to the caller, the caller was shot by Philipp F. The police officer had to listen to the act on the phone.  The police officer is receiving psychological support. At 9:08 p.m., the first police task forces were on the scene. At 9:09 p.m., the Hamburg police force's support patrol for difficult situations also arrived, having happened to be in the vicinity. They gained access to the building at 21:11. After storming the building, they found the body of the suspected spree killer on the top floor. Police spokesman Holger Vehren said that the police officers themselves had not fired any shots during the operation. A total of 953 police officers were on duty, including 52 federal police officers and special forces from Schleswig-Holstein. This is the usual procedur in such situations. Immediately after the attack became known, the police sent more officers to all the kingdom halls of Jehovah's Witnesses in Hamburg, because it could not be ruled out whether it was an isolated act or a concerted attack on the religious community. In addition, all surrounding hospitals were informed of the emergency so they could prepare to care for the injured. There are currently many speculations about the motive of the perpetrator, his time with Jehovah's Witnesses. his psychological condition, but also in relation to his relationship with his family, especially with his brother. The police asked to wait and see what the criminal investigation results would reveal in the coming days.

Natio U-15 dames maken zich op voor Concacaf Girls' U-15 Championship 2024

De nationale dames A1-selectie van Suriname maakt zich op voor de Concacaf Girls' U-15 Championship 2024, die tussen 5 en 11 augustus zal worden gehouden in Costa Rica, Trinidad en Tobago en Aruba. De vijfde editie van de competitie omvat groeps- en knock-outfasespel in een systeem van drie competities (A, B en C). Dit maakt de Concacaf bekend. "We zijn erg verheugd om de vijfde editie van het Concacaf Girls' U-15 Championship in drie fantastische landen te organiseren. Deze competitie speelt een grote rol bij de ontwikkeling van de meest getalenteerde jonge voetballers uit de regio terwijl ze om een continentale titel strijden", aldus Philippe Moggio, secretaris-generaal van de Concacaf. "We kijken ernaar uit om nauw samen te werken met de federaties van Aruba, Costa Rica en Trinidad en Tobago om ervoor te zorgen dat de deelnemende teams en fans een geweldige ervaring hebben", voegde Moggio aan toe. De wedstrijden van de competitie worden verdeeld over Costa Rica, Trinidad en Tobago en Aruba. Het Midden-Amerikaans land zal alle League A-wedstrijden organiseren, terwijl Leagues B en C respectievelijk in Trinidad en Tobago en Aruba zullen worden gespeeld. Alle drie de competities zullen een groepsfase en een knock-outfase hebben en in elk zal een kampioen gekroond worden. Het aantal teams per competitie wordt bepaald op basis van de Concacaf Women's U-17 Rankings  van maart 2024 en het definitieve aantal deelnemers. Tot op heden hebben 35 Concacaf-lidverenigingen interesse getoond om deel te nemen. Deze aangesloten verenigingen zijn: Suriname, Anguilla, Antigua en Barbuda, Aruba, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Bonaire, Britse Maagdeneilanden, Canada, Kaaimaneilanden, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curaçao, Dominica, Dominicaanse Republiek, El Salvador, Frans-Guyana, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Guatemala, Haïti, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Mexico, Nicaragua, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts en Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent en de Grenadines, Trinidad en Tobago, Turks- en Caicoseilanden, Verenigde Staten en de Amerikaanse Maagdeneilanden. De laatste editie van het Concacaf Girls' U-15 Championship vond plaats in 2022 in Tampa, FL, USA. Twintig teams namen deel aan het toernooi (verdeeld over twee competities). In League A claimde de Verenigde Staten van Amerika een derde titel op rij na het verslaan van Canada met 4-1 in de finale. Het roet - over ‘De flard’ van Phillipe Lançon 2

In de dagen na de vorige vos las ik het laatste deel van het boek van Lançon, waarin zijn zwaarbevochten herstel uiteindelijk leidt tot een voorzichtig leven in de buitenwereld. De lezer weet natuurlijk dat later in dat zelfde jaar er opnieuw een aanslag zal plaatsvinden: Bataclan.  Maar wat ik, beschaamd, was vergeten, is dat op diezelfde avond binnen een tijdsbestek van een uur in heel Parijs nog vijf andere aanslagen werden gepleegd. Honderddertig mensen verloren het leven en honderden anderen raakten gewond.

Ik vond een recensie in een Engelse krant waarin naast veel waardering ook de kritiek klonk dat het boek uitsluitend persoonlijk blijft en de lezer niets te weten komt van de context van de aanslag. Een volkomen onterechte kritiek in mijn ogen. Hoe moord te beantwoorden? Hoe het vermorzelen van menselijkheid? Hoe het opblazen van de taal? Door een bóek te schrijven, een boek dat antwoordt met leven, literatuur, lijden, innerlijke strijd, angst, liefde en vriendschap en dat vervolgens door honderddduizenden wordt gelezen. Een beter antwoord is er niet.

Kort na de aanslag brengt in het ziekenhuis een verpleegkundige hem een schrift en een stift. Zijn broer vindt het opengeslagen naast de slapende Philippe,  waarin in grote onhandige letters (drie vingers zijn min of meer ongeschonden gebleven) is geschreven: WIE IS DOOD? Later wordt geschreven:  HET WAS ALS EEN DROOM / WIE IS HIJ? / MOORDENAAR. En weer enkele bladzijden verder: DE KOGEL /  NIET GEVOELD / ME VOOR DOOD GEHOUDEN / DIE KEREL KWAM VOORBIJ / HIJ RIEP ALLAHOE AKBAR.

En toen moest ik aan moeder denken. In dat Nederlands-Indische leven, waarover nu alleen nog maar in termen van Schuld & Boete wordt gesproken, ontmoetten al eeuwenlang vele culturen elkaar. Zo kwam het dat mijn Chinese, levendige, driftige moeder vaak twee kreten slaakte: 'bismillah!' en allah tobat!'. Als ik als meisje weer eens met een gescheurde jurk en een geschaafde knie thuis kwam, riep zij: allah tobat! (waarbij de tweede 'a' van Allah langgerekt klonk, precies zoals bij de oproep tot gebed) en dat 'god bewaar me' betekent, of 'lieve hemel'. Haar Indische achtergrond won het daarbij dus van haar Nederlands Hervormde geloof. En als er iets op het punt stond te gebeuren of als iets moest gebeuren riep zij vaak 'Bismillah', waarvan ik nu weet dat het 'in godsnaam' betekent, of zou ik zeggen: 'god zegene de greep'. Maar dat zei ze niet.  Een handvol verwante woorden, van een moordenaar en van een moeder, dood en leven.

De Franse schrijver Francis Ponge probeerde voortdurend de taal open te breken in zijn teksten en gedichten. Hij wantrouwt de woorden, maar gelooft desondanks in hun sluimerende kracht. “O mensen! Vormeloze weekdieren [–]. Jullie hebben geen ander verblijf dan de gemeenschappelijke damp van jullie ware bloed: de woorden.” Dan doe ik wat hij verderop in die zelfde tekst zegt: ik schud het roet van de woorden van mij af – die van de moordenaar. En blaas wat resten van die van moeder.
