Senate Report 1619 to Accompany a Bill Granting a Pension to Harriet Tubman Davis
Record Group 233: Records of the U.S. House of RepresentativesSeries: Accompanying PapersFile Unit: Accompanying Papers of the 55th Congress
55th Congress, 3d Session. Senate Report No. 1619. HARRIET TUBMAN DAVIS. FEBRUARY 7, 1899. - Ordered to be printed. Mr. SHOUP, from the Committee on Pensions, submitted the following REPORT. [To accompany H. R. 4982.] The Committee on Pensions, to whom was referred the bill (H. R. 4892) granting a pension to Harriet Tubman Davis, have examined the same and report: The report of the Committee on Invalid Pensions of the House of Representatives is as follows: The effect of this bill is to increase from $8 to $25 per month the pension of the beneficiary, Harriet T. Davis, of Auburn, N. Y. Mrs. Davis is the widow of Nelson Davis, who served under the name of Nelson Charles as a private in Company G, Eighth United States Colored Infantry, from September 25, 1863, to November 10, 1865, and was honorably discharged. She also served long and faithfully as an army nurse. Soldier died October 14, 1888, and the widow filed a claim as such July 24, 1890, under the act of June 27, 1890, and is now pensioned under said act at $8 per month. It is not shown that the soldier's death was due to his military service. It is shown, however, by evidence filed with this committee, that the claimant was sent to the front by Governor Andrew, and acted as a nurse, cook in hospital, and spy during nearly the whole period of the war. The following is a copy of the letter from Secretary Seward: WASHINGTON, D. C., July 25, 1865. MY DEAR SIR: Harriet Tubman, a colored woman, has been nursing our soldiers during nearly all the war. She believes she has claims for faithful service to the command in South Carolina with which you are connected, and she believes you would be disposed to see her claim justly settled. I have known her long as a noble high spirit, as true as seldom dwells in the human form. I commend her, therefore, to your kind attention. Faithfully, your friend, WILLIAM H. SEWARD. Major-General HUNTER. Gen. Rufus Saxton, in a letter referring to Mrs. Tubman, says: "She was employed by General Hunter, and I think both by General Stephens and Sherman, and is as deserving of a pension from the Government for her service as any other of its faithful servants." In a letter to Brigadier-General Gilmore, from Headquarters Colored Brigade, St. Helena Island, South Carolina, July 6, 1863, Col. James Montgomery, commanding brigade, said: "I would respectfully recommend to your attention Mrs. Harriet Tubman, a most remarkable women, invaluable as a scout."2 HARRIET TUBMAN DAVIS. These testimonials sufficiently show the character and value of the service rendered by Mrs, Davis during the war. She now is about 75 years of age, physically broken down, and poor. This woman has a double claim on the Government. She went into the field and hospitals and cared for the sick and wounded. She saved lives. In her old age and poverty a pension of $25 per month is none too much. The bill is reported back with the recommendation that it pass. The papers in this case show that a claim for this woman was once presented to the House of Representatives and referred to the Committee on War Claims. Manifestly that would be the better way to reimburse her for her alleged services to the Government, but her advanced years and necessitous condition lead your committee to give the matter consideration. There is, however, a strong objection to the bill in its present form. The number of nurses on the pension roll at a rate higher than $12 per month is very few indeed, and there are no valid reasons why this claimant should receive a pension of $25 per month as a nurse, thus opening a new avenue for pension increases. She is now drawing pension at the rate of $8 per month as the widow of a soldier, and in view of her personal services to the Government Congress is amply justified in increasing that pension. Unit 9
Hi Everyone,
It has been difficult to think of something that would excite me and my classmates. I do have a passion for health and welling being, so I wanted to pick a topic in that realm.
I find it very interesting that plants can be used for medicinal purposes. More specifically, cannabis plants can be used to treat multiple medical conditions. I have recently done research for a NEUR*4000 course that looked at the effects of cannabis on schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a very interesting and complex disorder. Research has proven that antipsychotics that are prescribed to individuals with schizophrenia are ineffective. Cannabidiol, also known as CBD, is a naturally occurring and primary component in cannabis plants (Koleza et al., 2020). CBD differs from THC as it does not elicit psychomimetic effects, making it the non-psychoactive component in Cannabis Sativa (Boggs et al., 2018). In individuals with schizophrenia, the effects of THC can trigger amplified psychotic episodes, provoking relapse (Koleza et al., 2020). However, studies have been conducted to determine the possible therapeutic effects of CBD due to its antipsychotic profile (Peres et al., 2018). Multiple studies have proven that CBD reduces psychotic symptoms in schizophrenia (McGuire et al., 2018).
Another way that nature is used to alleviate symptoms of schizophrenia is through interactions with animals. Currently, I am working in Caledon at a Ranch that houses individuals with schizophrenia. The ranch is not only home to the clients but some farm animals as well. There are 2 miniature ponies, 3 alpacas, 2 sheep, 5 goats, 16 chickens, and 3 peacocks. The ranch sits on 23 acres of land. The animals provide comfort and responsibility to the client. There is also a community garden on the property. The clients on the ranch and in the community learn to care for the animals and community gardens. The program aims to teach life skills to the clients.
What other medical conditions could be treated or benefit from CBD? Research has shown that CBD can be used to ease chronic or neuropathic pain (Rapin et al., 2021). Furthermore, mental health conditions like anxiety and depression can be treated with CBD (Rapin et al., 2021). Findings have shown that CBD is effective when individuals experience moderate to severe symptoms (Rapin et al., 2021).
I find it so amazing how nature can be used to help individuals with mental health issues and improve well-being. It is not a very nature-isc view but nature is involved to some level.
I look forward to reading your blog post and find out what in nature interest you!
Thank you,
Makayla

"Altered Consciousness" and Cave Art - The Entoptic Phenomena
I've made it through midterms and it's finally anthrop-o'clock!!
I want to start my blog with something I find really...REALLY...fascinating. I was presented this idea in an archaeology class and it's stuck with me since.
OK so let's begin with the fact that cave art is largely a mystery. There've been plenty of theories trying to explain it, but it is prettttty difficult to figure out what was happening in the minds of Palaeolithic peoples. If only there was some, chemically constant, comparative explanation we can study in the minds of people today....OH WAIT!!
The human nervous system, when hallucinating, creates uniform geometric shapes (uniform meaning that if we both hallucinated, our shared brain chemistry/biology would make us see the same types of shapes). This is the Entoptic Phenomena, and some of the shapes ("Entoptic forms") created by the human mind have been found within cave art.
This leads into the discussion of shamans, who are credited with creating this entoptic cave art. Shamans deal with rituals, which has led some anthropologists to believe that cave art was part of rituals in which people would induce a trance-like state and paint the forms they were seeing.
Here's some of the entoptic forms compared to cave art!

*&*  –  was that [ charles michael davis ]  ?  oh no no , that was just [ alastor ] , a [ canon character ] from [ hazbin hotel ]. they are [ one hundred+ ] years old , use [ he / him ] ,  &  [ are ] aware that they are not actually from washington dc.
B A S I C S .
dc arrival : september 2023
current occupation : radio host/landlord
canon point : up to date
pronouns : he/him
memory status : unaffected
I N F O R M A T I O N .
full name : alastor
nicknames : the radio demon
age : 100+ ( 35 )
birthday : august 04
homeplace : new orleans, louisiana
previous location : pentagram city, hell
native language : english
traits : charismatic, manipulative, cheerful, narcissistic, confident
C A N O N  T I D B I T S .
more strictly canon information can be found by clicking the wiki linked at the bottom.
he was an only child born in new orleans in the late 19th century, growing up to become a radio host & a serial killer with an odd sense of morality.
when he died, he was sent to hell, where he quickly became a powerful overlord that broadcasted the screams of his victims.
after a 7 year disappearance, he returned & out of boredom, he decided to help the princess of hell with her ridiculous sinner redemption plan.
B I O G R A P H Y .
this includes canon information, as well as headcanons. this contains SPOILERS.
alastor was born at the very tail end of the 19th century, raised by a single mother in the city of new orleans. a charismatic & dandy-sort of man, he became a radio host with a love of jazz & pleasantries. however, after the murder of his mother, his need for vengeance had him turning to more violent tendencies. while remaining an outwardly genial fellow, he sought out the death of his mother's murderer & he soon realized that it wasn't enough for him, becoming an increasingly threatening serial killer of the late 1920s to slightly more deserving victims. this went on until he was accidentally killed in 1933 & he immediately ended up in hell. with a just as permanent smile on his face however, his quickly rose in ranks from an average sinner with extraordinary power to a demonic overlord, broadcasting the screams of his new victims over the air. though he had little interest in being considered a ruling entity, the power & control he felt continued to feed his overindulged ego, & he doesn't speak against the name ' the radio demon ' given to him from citizens.
though he was very powerful & came to own a number of souls, alastor eventually lost ownership of his own somewhere along the way. in an act of desperation, he agreed to a deal with eve that essentially ' put him on a leash ' & led to his betrayal of lilith, one of the very few people that he's ever considered a friend. for a little under a decade, he then disappeared from the city with little trace, also secretly working out ways to break his contract as soon as his name was signed. eventually he was able to return just as suddenly as he'd left, appearing unthreatened but unhappy by the fact that his rival, a more modern media demon, had only come to further grow his hold on the population as expected. however, as he quickly remembered how lacking his afterlife had become, he quickly grew interest in the hotel being promoted by the princess of hell. being explained as a place to rehabilitate sinners for a chance at heaven, he thought the very idea itself was ridiculous. but he did think it'd be entertaining to watch demons fail since he had nothing better to do anyway, & he figured that getting close to someone close to the very top of hell's hierarchy would be good for him, so he offered his help to fix up, protect, & run the hotel. he kept true to his word, bringing a couple of employees to the job, until he ended up here.
A D D I T I O N A L   N O T E S .
he looks entirely human now, though he's retained some of his demonic powers. i'll also note that he's always dressed up & with a monocle, & he's literally never seen without a smile as a way to express control. but most notably, he speaks with a bit of a transatlantic accent & typically projects his voice to have an old-timey radio effect.

Alphabetical by last name, unless they don't have a surname, in which case, good luck.
Looking for the host? Try the Taylor Tomlinson tag.
Is a name misspelled? Link broken? Dear god, please tell me.
