Quick and simple t-shirt mod

My Subspecies shirt arrived, and thankfully its a good quality one, not a dropshipper or an Ali Express resell. It actually despatched from the UK in spite of the pricing being in dollars, so I think it might be print to order and they just send the order to a printer in whatever country the customer is in. Link for the site here, they have a few other horror shirts but seem to mostly sell merch for the Australian extreme metal band, Portal - I would highly recommend this band to anyone who likes bizarre, avant-garde, experimental or just fucking weird extreme music.

Anyway, I almost always mod my shirts to make them a little more interesting. I crop them because although I'm pretty slim I have hyperlordosis (a slight inward spinal curvature) that makes certain clothing including long shirts look really unflattering on me. If I crop a shirt to my natural waist it looks way better, though sometimes if the design is large I have to make a decision between losing part of it, or having it look unflattering. Not a problem with this one thankfully, the design is printed pretty high on the shirt.

I also usually cut out the neck and cut the sleeves off. Partially to show more of my tattoos but also because I prefer the way it looks. If I leave the sleeves on it, it tends to be a skinny-fit shirt.

After that I would usually cut and weave the sides or the back (there are many tutorials for different ways to do this online), but for this shirt I had the idea to add eyelets and laces. The shoulder stitching tends to come undone when you cut out the neck and sleeves of a t shirt so I needed some way of securing that part back together anyway, and they're nice and visible there.

Eyelets are cheap, and inserting them is super easy - just make a hole with something sharp. Though I have a leather punch, for this kind of thin stretchy fabric I usually use my scratch awl, but you can easily do it with scissors. Eyelets come in a pack with a tool for setting them in place, and you need a hammer to hit them a few times. Make sure you're on a very sturdy surface as you need plenty of resistance to get them nice and secure. A concrete floor is best.

I just folded the fabric in half to get the middle ones in the right spot but you can measure the spacing if you have more to put in.

I had boot laces to hand because I always save them if I get rid of a pair of old boots, but you could use pretty much anything you have available- ribbon, lace, even long strips of the t shirt fabric that you cut off.

I laced them up, tied them very tightly and then covered the knots in fabric glue to make sure they don't come undone. Then I trimmed them to the right length, and as they're synthetic (so, plastic) I used a lighter to melt the ends slightly to make sure they won't fray.

I had the bright idea to also singe the knots, forgetting of course that the glue would be flammable so the whole knot caught fire, but thankfully I reacted quick and blew it out straight away! At least they're very unlikely to come undone now, but please be extremely careful if you choose to do anything involving a naked flame!

I was going to add more eyelets down the sides to make it tighter, but I don't have enough left, and actually it's fairly tight already. I also may do something to the back as there's no print there and it looks a little plain, but for now I'm very happy with this.

Subspecies' Radu is wasted on his franchise

I say this lovingly, believe it or not. The Subspecies series is one of my all-time favorites. It's the first vampire movie to ever actually be shot in Romania, practical effects are amazing, the lighting in the sequels is gorgeous (the first movie, though, unfortunately shows its budget), and it's a throwback to the Gothic vampires of old with a few interesting twists. BUT IT'S SO CHEESY. Which brings me to the reasoning for the title. Spoilers for 25+ year old movies ahead.

Radu, the malevolent antagonist throughout the series, looks very much like your average evil vampire, and acts like it, too, reveling in the suffering of his prey and hatred for the human race. But as the series goes on, it becomes clear that he's ultimately a sad, lonely individual who has been spurned by both his mother and his father, the former who hates him and smothers him; the latter who fears him and denied him his birthright. He's seen centuries pass by, and likely embraced evil to cope with the pain of his prolonged existence (I'm saying all this excluding the prequel from my headcanon, mind you, because I found it to be fairly weak and filled with retcons).

He starts out proud of his vampirism, belittling his brother Stefan for showing feelings of an almost human nature (please get the reference) and threatening to make the three women his "consorts". At the end of the first movie, he haughtily boasts, "You can't kill me Stefan! Nothing can!" before Stefan lops off his head. Come the sequel, he is brought back by his minions, the eponymous plot-irrelevant creatures who really would have looked better if Ted Nicolau had just used actors like he'd originally planned. He then kills his brother and stomps on his bones while screaming "BASTARD! BASTARD! BASTARD!" at him, his coat noticeably coming loose from his shoulder all the while and his elongated fingers (which were prosthetics in the first, but replaced by a glove from the second onwards) wobbling. At the end of the movie, he threatens Michelle that he'll "desecrate [her sister] in ways that will haunt her forever" if she doesn't surrender to him.

Contrast this attitude with the third movie, Bloodlust (my favorite of the bunch), where he's back from the dead again and now holds Michelle in his captivity. While he is still unquestionably evil, it's clear that he's very much in love with her. That, for all his misanthropic tendencies, he is desperate for connection. Desperate to feel loved. Unfortunately, his perception of love is warped. He wants to force Michelle to shed the last traces of her humanity so that she can love him in return, which is an extraordinarily shitty thing to do. But he does seem to have learned a few things about basic kindness and mercy, allowing her to watch the sunrise with him (when Michelle asks him what can kill a vampire, he responds, "Many things"; on paper, this comes off clunky, but it also shows that he's come a long way over the past few nights, when not long ago, he bragged that nothing could kill him), letting her say goodbye to her sister with no strings attached, and even shows what seems to be genuine remorse for being the monster that he knows he is. Even in the fourth movie, which is the most frustrating to watch in the entire franchise, he's kind enough to give a homeless man a coin in exchange for his robe, telling him to buy himself a new one.

A few things that make Radu such a great villain: as Maven of the Eventide pointed out, he's given an in-depth backstory, which is a rarity for many vampires. Even Dracula himself didn't have an elaborate backstory, and there's only ever speculation on who he might have been. The Vlad story was just added in later. He's also well-developed in ways you wouldn't expect in a B-movie. Goes from being an aspiring badass vampire lord to being a bit of a pathetic downtrodden momma's boy who just so happens to be evil to, well, still pathetic and evil, but also sympathetic to the point where his painful and gruesome death in Bloodlust comes across as tragic. Even when he's pissed off at Michelle for spurning him and expresses a desire to kill her (supposedly; it's difficult to tell how serious he was about wanting to kill her, could have just been trying to avoid showing weakness to Ash), he still shows a few traces of decency and compassion. It really says a lot that he works better as a sympathetic villain than Dracula does in Coppola's adaptation.

The prequel, while only maybe a slight improvement over Bloodstorm, at least manages to continue the trend in making him a tragic villain. In some ways, it does even better. He doesn't have any of his hammy, overacted moments that he did in the first four movies, he's not portrayed as some pathetic momma's boy, and the tragedy surrounding his abominable birth and his induction into the band of crusaders, along with the centuries of loneliness that pass him by, are all played in such a straightforward manner. He's played as much more of a cruel sadist with the passage of time, but still, you feel sorry for him, as he's continually abandoned, betrayed, left to suffer, to where he's left with little more choice than to embrace the evil he was destined for at birth.

Now, to get back to the title of this post, what I mean is that for all his depth as a character, and for all the charm of the series that I love unironically, he's still stuck in a B-movie franchise that to this day remains obscure next to the likes of Hammer Horror, Universal Monsters, Anne Rice, Blade, or the post-Twilight wave of vampire fiction. As such, he'll never rise to the same level as any of them in terms of popularity. Which... I'm ultimately fine with. It's just a shame that he'll never really reach that potential.

After much delay, Subspecies V: Blood Rise is currently filming in Belgrade, Serbia. Under the direction of Ted Nicolaou, the Subspecies series is an American, direct-to-video, horror film series produced by Charles Band’s Full Moon Features. The series originally ran ran from 1991 to 1998, and followed the exploits of vampire Radu Vladislas, portrayed by Anders Hove, and his efforts to turn Michelle Morgan into his fledgling.

Reese's (Art) Pieces

Spoilers for game Scarlet Hollow (and kinda for webcomic After Dark)

Recently, I got into horrors on webtoons. I started with Counting Sheep, and went down Melvina's Therapy, Stagtown (<3) and After Dark, to list a few. Seriously, those are all really great stories to read! Check them out!

Cusstard's After Dark has some really great art, especially when it comes to depicting a skinny white boy going through a painful transformation (It's a werewolf story, y'all!).

I wanted to try recreating the poses with Reese, since he goes through a similar experience.

On a lighter note, here's my idea for Reese's Halloween Costume.

Tabitha and Stella's outfits are inspired by the developers' AMA post about their childhood Halloween costumes. While Stella dressed as a vet like her mother, Tabitha always wanted to create something imaginative and macabre, such as a severed head on a cardboard table. Meanwhile, Reese dressed as... a vampire. Just that. Needless to say, I was dissatisfied, which resulted in this image. I blended the vampire archetype with his fondness for obscure horror films, choosing Radu Vladislas from the series Subspieces.

My headcannon is that Tabitha actually knows the series, but purposefully decides to be a prick...

Shiny New Fanfiction: lună de lup (Subspecies)

The Scene: Radu returns to Romania and Castle Vladislas in the early 1990’s to kill his father and claim the throne. Stefan arrives fashionably late as usual, but fails to kill his older half brother…fleeing with his tail between his legs. Michelle and company don’t get their research grant approved so there’s no trip to Ye Olde Transylvania and they all live happily ever after. 

Welcome to this reimaging on how things might go for Radu if he never fell afoul of Michelle and spent a decade or so just chilling in his dad’s fortress. Alone. Until…

The hike up to the castle ruins took longer than she thought it would. Stopping in a bit of shade, Fia wiped the sweat off her brow and squinted up into the bright midday sky. Who knew it would be so hot in Romania this time of year? She’s stripped off her jacket hours ago and contemplated skimping down to her sports bra now - this far out in the woods there was no one to see her anyways.

According to the map she’d picked up in Prejmer, the castle was only an hour’s distance through the dense brush. Fia didn’t have the best sense of direction, but she was almost positive she’d been going the right way. Why hadn’t she reached it yet?

“A GPS would be awfully handy right now,” she groused, hoisting her backpack up onto her shoulder and continuing her trek. 

The stop in Prejmer wasn’t a planned one, but Fia found the town to be rather quaint. She’d spent the previous night in a little inn run by a very sweet married couple who spoke virtually no English and they’d managed most of their interaction via pantomime. Judging by how long it took for them to grasp that she wanted a room for only one night, Fia knew she’d never win a game of charades. 

Hence, she now had an English-Romanian pocket dictionary downloaded on her phone. It had been only marginally helpful in ordering a coffee at a cafe across the street from the Prejmer fortress. That place, on the other hand, had a plethora of guides that spoke passable English - and she quite enjoyed the tour she had been given of the incredible, ancient structure. 

Her guide that morning had been a willowy teenage girl who hadn’t been able to resist rolling her eyes just a bit when she got to the part about vampires. Until recently, Prejmer had even held an annual festival honoring the undead, something about the village making a truce with a vampire way back in the day. Her guide didn’t remember many of the details about the festival or the vampire, but assured Fia that one of the older guides could probably tell her more.

“They’re just silly stories, of course,” her guide laughed. “Let us go inside the church now. Please follow.”

Just silly stories. Fia snorted. The poor girl had no idea what kind of monster in sheep’s clothing she’d been entertaining. 

Finally, the lush trees gave way to a small stone arch that led out onto a grassy graveyard. The rotting remains of wooden crosses dotted the field and just beyond, the castle loomed. For a moment, Fia simply stood and took it in. There was nothing this picturesque back home.

Time hadn’t been kind to this castle. Much of the outer structure was crumbling and aggressive ivy climbed along one entire side, finding purchase on the rough stone. One lone tower remained, its red roof flaked and open in patches. Despite its dilapidated nature, there didn’t appear to be an easy way inside. 

That wasn’t a problem for Fia. As much as she would love the idea of stealth camping inside, the weather promised to hold out and a night under the stars wouldn’t be terrible if the temperature dropped a little. Still…

Exhausted, she dropped her backpack on the hill overlooking the graveyard and plopped down next to it. She could explore later, right now she desperately needed to rest her aching feet and catch her breath. 

The wind lifted wisps of caramel colored hair away from her face, carrying with it the fresh scents of spruce, fir, and beech from deep inside the forest. A deeper inhale brought the richness of the soil into her nostrils. The staleness of old bones buried deep reached her next.  Something else tickled her senses, something she couldn’t quite place. 

Fia exhaled it away. Strange places always smelled strange. Rather than dwell on it, it was time to explore the outside of Castle Vladislas and try to find a way inside. She followed an old footpath up past the main gate and into the castle courtyard, which was surrounded by crumbling stone. There were a few still standing structures that she ducked into, surprised by how much cooler they were compared to the heat of the sun outside.

“Well, now I have to get inside,” she mumbled. “Nature’s refrigeration. Beats sleeping outside in this heat…”

It took some stumbling around the backside of the castle before she found it. It was an ornate wooden door that looked to be in pretty good shape, but the rusty hinges it sat on had definitely seen better days. Cautiously, she pushed at the door. It did not budge. 

“Okay,” she said, dropping her pack. She rubbed her hands together and braced them against the door once more. “Please don’t break on me.” It was silly to plead with a door, but she could only hope the wood wouldn’t splinter as she heaved with significantly more force. The hinged protested but slowly gave with a loud squeal and the door swung inward marginally. 

Fia grinned. “Just a little more.” Once she had enough space to squeeze in, she stepped back and admired her work. No damage - at least, none that was visible. Her backpack was kicked inside first and then Fia slipped sideways into the cold, stone interior of Castle Vladislas.

Line break

Awareness came back to him quickly that night. Often it was slow, consciousness trickling back into him like water dripping down limestone, but not this night. Stiffly, he rose from his crypt and let a stale wheeze escape from unused lungs. 

Radu slid his body from the stone slab and scrambled upright onto ungainly limbs. Already, his thirst clawed at him and he ambled towards the long spiral staircase that would take him from crypt to the upper levels of the castle. There, in the throne room, the bloodstone awaited him.

It wasn’t long into his ascent before a wisp of panic slithered into his head and he tuned in to what his creatures were trying to communicate to him. It was a confusing jumble of observations but one rang clearly in his mind. Intruder. Girl. 

A grin curled the edges of his mouth. If his minions’ fears were true, there was a girl somewhere inside the castle. How long had it been since a mortal had wandered into his domain? He had tried to content himself with the bloodstone, but he longed for the chase. The hunt. Nothing could compare to the rush of hot blood against his tongue. 

Bloodstone forgotten, Radu climbed upwards with a new intention.

Kevin Spirtas Wraps Filming on Subspecies V: Blood Rise

Subspecies actor Kevin Spirtas announced he has wrapped filming on Full Moon Features’ new prequel with a heartfelt post on social media. 

After much delay, Subspecies V: Blood Rise is currently filming in Belgrade, Serbia. Under the direction of Ted Nicolaou, the Subspecies series is an American, direct-to-video, horror film series produced by Charles Band’s Full Moon Features. The series originally ran ran from 1991 to 1998, and followed the exploits of vampire Radu Vladislas, portrayed by Anders Hove, and his efforts to turn Michelle Morgan into his fledgling.  

Spanning 500 years in the life of the vampire Radu Vladislas, this long-anticipated prequel to the Subspecies series chronicles Radu's descent from a noble warrior for the Church to a depraved creature of the night.  

In an emotional post on Instagram, Kevin Spirtas announced he has finished filming Subspecies V: Blood Rise. The actor called the filming in Serbia a “true joy.” Check out his full post below:
