refinery29 The Idol, the latest MAX series from Euphoria creator #SamLevinson, follows the story of a young female pop star named Jocelyn played by Lily-Rose Depp who forges a career comeback with the help of a mysterious club owner named Tedros played by singer and the series producer The Weeknd who is now going by his real name Abel Tesfaye.
Critics, both professionally and on social media, have zeroed in on the hypersexual content of the show.
Audience reactions have been even less forgiving. Aside from tweets about Tesfaye's cringe delivery of bad dialogue, audiences seem to be just as disturbed by the sexual content of the show. "The Idol is what happens when you let a man with a porn addiction direct a TV show," goes one viral tweet.
At a press conference at Cannes Film Festival a week before the series made its world premiere, Levinson responded to criticisms about the polarizing and salacious nature of the show. "We know we're making a show that is provocative. It’s not lost on us," he said. In defense of the graphic sex depicted on the show, Levinson said, "We live in a very sexualized world. Especially in the States, the influence of pornography is strong in the psyche of young people. We see this in pop music and how it sort of reflects the kind of underbelly of the internet in some ways." He also added: "Sometimes, things that might be revolutionary are taken too far."
At the 🔗 in bio, writer Hanna Phifer examines the term "porn-brained" and unpacks what it means in 2023. ✍️ Hanna Phifer 📷 Courtesy of MAX #R29Articles #TheWeeknd #TheIdol

A sensual and honest story from Zendaya and John David Washington - Malcolm & Marie REVIEW
Euphoria creator Sam Levinson brings to Netflix a black and white spectacle starring two of Hollywood’s most decorated actors, told over one night of revelation and heart ache between two people.
Tumblr media
Whoever decided to put Zendaya and John David Washington alongside each other in a film deserves a raise and a big one at that. The two have been part of some of the biggest, most acclaimed pieces for screen and television over the past few years and in this story, their talent and purity for acting is blown up for us in all its details.
Malcolm (Washington) and his girlfriend Marie (Zendaya) arrive home for what Malcolm recalls as the “biggest night of his life” after having released a film that has garnered critical acclaim. As the two waltz into their sophisticated accommodation for the night, Malcolm throws us right into his inflated mind as a filmmaker, someone who thinks highly of himself and wears this trait as a badge of honour. Meanwhile Marie is far from impressed, dainty smoking a cigarette outside and offering an outside perspective on his righteous spiel about what critics will make of his film, to which Marie points out he’s complaining about articles that haven’t even been written. This is the first example of many where Marie is afforded the upper hand of the argument and soon begins to digress the fact that Malcolm never thanked her in his speech. This detail is what surrounds the entire evening as Malcolm and Marie go head to head in a war on who should have earned the credit for the film in question.
Tumblr media
The most enjoyable aspect of this film (despite the well put together language and black and white frames) was the way it made me feel. I was often left torn between the paradoxical arguments that both Malcolm and Marie expressed to one another and shocked from the harshness of their words. The script was incredibly written and the word play, musicality and deliverance of both actors certainly drove the film to the end and detracted from the simplicity of the film. Though both actors were phenomenal in their roles, Zendaya totally killed it in her performance and to see her in such a mature role was a gift in itself. John David Washington was the epitome of his father Denzel Washington in the way he manoeuvred his selfish and inflated ego all over the screen. Not to mention the ambitious and god damn BeAuTiFuL black and white shots that tied everything together in making this an extremely praiseworthy film. There were a few sporting moments of comedy that came through and relieved the suffering of the arguments as well as highlighting the bourgeois element to the film industry. Malcolm frequently refers to a “white LA reporter” of which he expects to misinterpret his film and make it about race. A common inclination in our film industry, as when black filmmakers step past bringing us accounts of racism on screen, they are either overly applauded or accused of somehow abandoning their own race. Marie points this out very spitefully, reminding Malcolm of his privilege and lack of ability to relate to those who have gone through actual struggles because of their race.
Tumblr media
Because of the strong language and dynamics portrayed in this closed spaced film, I was given the opportunity to really allow Malcolm & Marie’s words to sink in and think about the arbitrary behind the film industry. I am already a guilty member of this society by writing this review, seeing as films don’t actually matter and there are more important things in the world than misinterpreting Pulp Fiction. Yet still the argument goes in order to be an artist, you have to accept this part of yourself as a creator. I’m sure Levinson accepted this part when writing this film and it’s nothing to be ashamed of as Marie points out. There’s another example of how her strength prevails and I feel so lucky to be given a woman such as Zendaya on screen who is effortlessly vulnerable and strong at the same time in the work she does. This film truly made me idolise her and ponder her next pursuits in acting.
Tumblr media
Sam Levinson is the son of Barry Levinson, famous for works such as Rain Man and Good Morning Vietnam. Levinson follows suit (but better) in his father’s career pursuits, having created the highly acclaimed series Euphoria, written and directed Assassination Nation for Netflix and helped produce Pieces of a Woman. Malcolm & Marie is the first film he’s written, directed and produced and with that, I believe Levinson has carved out a solid foundation for himself as a filmmaker, someone who goes leaps and bounds to rectify their opinions and emotions for powerful pieces on screen.
Malcolm & Marie is available to watch on Netflix from today.

Review : Malcolm & Marie (2021)
Tumblr media
I’ve been waiting for this one for a while... after hearing that Zendaya had passed up a number of acting offers due to them leaving her less than inspired, it made my curiosity about Malcolm & Marie amplify.  This is one of the first Netflix releases that looks like a steal from the realms of theater quality, as the comparisons to Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolfe? seem nearly impossible to escape based on the pre-release press.  I initially thought this was going to be a dead week while I waited for the February 12th release of Judas and the Black Messiah, but luckily for me, this was one time where my oversight brought me surprise happiness.
Malcolm (John David Washington) and Marie (Zendaya) return to their home from the premier of Malcolm’s latest film, which has him riding on cloud nine in anticipation of breakthrough success and positive reviews.  His celebration is quickly marred, however, by Marie clueing Malcolm in to the fact that, despite her previous assurances she was not upset, Malcolm‘s forgetting to thank her in his speech hurt her.  What starts as a pointed argument quickly devolves into an airing of grievances that damages to tear the couple’s relationship apart.
In watching this film, you’d think there was a long, deeply personal history that exists between Zendaya and Washington, as they find extremely natural ways to pull us directly into the middle of their interactions.  The self-gratifying monologues they throw back and forth between one another are LOADED with what feels like personal experiences and deep regrets, and the darts that emerge feel charged with pent up, festering details they’ve held back from one another.  The balance between heated arguments, silent contemplation and massive vulnerability is brilliant, with the shift from one to the next providing viewers with a literal emotional rollercoaster.
Outside of the relationship, it is interesting to position Malcolm as a filmmaker (particularly an underappreciated one), as it provides the opportunity for Sam Levinson to voice his opinions on the perils that beset Black filmmakers.  Malcolm and the struggles he faces are brought up early on in the film, but once the infamous review from the “white girl” who picks his film apart is published, the litany of points pinned could read like an analysis on how Black film is perceived in comparison to filmmakers form other races and creeds.  Even with the review in the film being mostly positive, Malcolm finds himself only able to hang on the marginalization of his work, with each director he compares himself to revealing his internal hang-ups that seemingly give him the “drive” that he goes on and on about (much to the pleasure of Marie).  Putting us squarely in the middle of Malcolm’s personal turmoil helps bring him down to Earth, as it tears away all of the protective walls he builds and leaves him as vulnerable as the Marie we are given (and her painful past that is alluded to).
Somebody with some deep pockets sprung for the soundtrack, because the music selection in this film is STELLAR.  I’m not sure if the choice to present the film in black and white is a nod to the influence of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolfe? or purely a stylistic choice, but it not only helps demonstrate how timeless no holds barred arguments between couples are, but it enhances the beautiful cinematography... most any frame of this film could be captured as a still and presented as artistic photography.  The black and white also amplifies the chiaroscuro found in the shifting power dynamics as the argument progresses.  Sam Levinson is able to flex his writing talent in Malcolm & Marie on the same pedestal that his directing talent sits on, with the interactions between his characters feeling intimately real and extremely volatile.  Although it’s only mentioned in passing during the film, the house in which the film takes place is pretty impressive.
Zendaya has come a long way since her days as a Disney star.  In all fairness, I’ve not seen Euphoria, so my frame of reference is a bit skewed, but as far as her film roles go, I’ve never seen this much range or vulnerability in a Zendaya performance.  She is mesmerizing when she is speaking, and nearly as powerful in her moments of observation and contemplation.  John David Washington also steps up to the challenge by coming the closest I’ve ever heard him sound to his infinitely famous father.  His physicality is powerful, as his movements match the frenzied pace of the thoughts in his head, and at times, he allows controlled and precise performances to slip into manic rants where we strive for the breaths he is leaping beyond.
To borrow a phrase that is quickly becoming cliché, this is the type of film that aims for (and hits you) directly in the feels.  I’m going to start mentally preparing myself now for this film to be snubbed during next year’s awards season, but hopefully I will be wrong about that.  If you’re not too distracted by this weekend’s Superb Owl (I don’t wanna get sued), then make sure to set aside 90 minutes for this modern day classic.

#euphoria #hbo #samlevinson #zendaya https://www.instagram.com/p/B0_djeIIpuh/?igshid=1fwrb4yomkqg8
