Gatlinburg, Tennessee
Our first trip of 24, was to Tennessee - Gatlinburg. We had heard lots about Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, but our intention wasn't really to visit the park, but rather explore the area a bit.
We had a cool airbnb, just outside of Gatlinburg in a quiet wooded neighbourhood, in Sieverville, not close enough to walk anywhere, but a short 5 min drive to the nearest restaurant.
On the evening we arrived, we were a little surprised to find the main road more commercialised than we had expected. On the way in, from Sieverville to Pigeon Forge, each side of the road was crammed with touristy entertainment venues - crazy gold, amusement centres, hollywood themed complexes and tons of eateries. Gatlinburg itself, wasn't much different, apart from the road being narrower and more of a town feel than just a highway sandwiched between crazy commercial attractions.
Our first day, found us visiting the island - a large area given over to a constructed market street, big wheel, restaurants, a few entertainment venues and of course a couple of amusement arcades. The temperature had started to drop and the forecast was of snow. We meandered around, found a coffee shop and just enjoyed the atmosphere.
The following day, we headed into Gatlinburg itself and visited the skypark/ bridge. This consisted of a short ride up a mountain in a chairlift, followed by a walk across a swing suspension bridge and some pretty views. Initially, this was closed due to strong winds, but after we'd stopped for a coffee and then returned it was running again.
As the weather was predicted to worsen, we took advantage of the blue sky and drove to Cades Cove. This was a beautiful area- a country drive which gave brilliant views of the Smoky Mountains and allowed us to soak up an old isolated valley where settlers first farmed the land before it became a national park.
The next day, unfortunately the weather had changed. We had another wander around the Island, went and did a bit of shopping at Walmart and drove to Sieverville town centre to see the homeplace of Dolly Parton and to view the statue of her as a young lady. Sieverville didn't really grab us, but it was raining and it was deserted. There is very little to see in the town centre, other than a short row of shops and of course the statue itself. We never made it to Dollywood, which I'm sure is far more fun and worthy of a visit than the town centre. However, it was interesting to imagine Dolly herself growing up here.
On waking up on our last day, we found a covered town. Everything was closed and the roads were covered in snow. The forecast warned of a winter storm and advised no travel. However, we knew we had to get home and so began a rather treacherous journey back. There was no sign of gritters or snow ploughs. In fact here was no sign of anyone or any vehicles to begin with. Slowly, we made our way on untreated roads. Whilst it wasn't deep, the fact that no one had been on the roads made it feel very precarious. It wasn't until we crossed into NC, that the roads were cleared of snow. An interesting experience...not really wanting to repeat, but just glad to get home safely

I think think this would be one of the funnier interactions in an “Ezra and Luke are in the rebellion at the same time together” timeline.

This was in January. Our first trip in 2k23 🖤 the couple was lovely, reminds me of Hijrah and her husband. Been years since our last hangout. Hope to see her soon — no more postpones.
