Working on a side-table prototype this afternoon using southern yellow pine. I started this prototype last year but couldn’t decide on the leg design but now I have! Here I’m planing the table top flat with a Clifton 5 1/2 along with preparing to cut the rails and legs to size… with some help 🐶

A tribute to our dog Missy - 21/11/08-24/12/22

I am sad to say that today is the inevitable day that we have had to say goodbye to our darling Missy. I am gutted and heartbroken, but thankful for the energetic and happy life of love she has had with us. A few months where she has been challenged by health struggles culminated in seizures, and though we wished this day never came it has done.

As I said I take comfort in what a happy and long dog’s life she had. When we got her in January 2009 following the passing of our first family dog Sally who we rescued middle age the October before, though it was a shock to the system having a puppy into everything, she was exactly what we needed as a family to bring us the joy that sharing our life with one of these characteristic and charming animals brings. I still vividly remember the puppy days when she chewed everything including the bottom of my pajamas one morning! Sally weirdly never barked but for particular occasions so I’d never known what it was having a barking dog in the house when we got Missy. That deep loud bark is what I’ll always remember her for. As well as her voracious appetite. She was a feisty one, and certainly wasn’t the Cocker Spaniel we brought her as (she was advertised as working cocker but obviously looks springer so we’ve always referred to her as Sprocker Spaniel) but soon grew to be a beautiful young dog who we adored and loved and became such a big part of all of our lives. A loyal companion through any moment who loved running, playing and getting out for walks. A lovely dog to have beside us on New Forest walks and other places in the countryside. In the town we made enduring friendships with people through a group of dogs that would gather on Grantham Green, vital parts of her play time and interaction with other dogs.

I think it was the making of her though when we let her have a litter of puppies nearly two years after getting her which gave us an experience we shall never forget. And in the years after she maintained a formidable bond with the puppy of her’s we kept, the dearly departed and much missed Ruby. They were the dynamic duo of love and fun, and their devotion to each other was astonishing to witness. Whilst her brave daughter defied the odds to battle on with cancer and get four and a bit bonus years, bar the arthritis Missy lived healthy years and as if no time had passed at all she made it to the impressive age of fourteen. The last few months have been hard as we watched her deteriorate, the last few years to an extent too as she was lost without Ruby and aged greatly and we made the most of the time we had with this dog, but like with Ruby two years ago whilst we knew this day would come it does not make it any easier.

Part of me is happy she was outdoors a place she loved to be when her final hours beckoned, and as the rush to the out of hours vets who have been brilliant tonight ensued I caught sight of Ruby’s face on my Mum’s phone case laid on the car seat. It was as though Ruby was waiting by the gates of doggy heaven, ready to greet her Mummy with a sock or something else in her mouth as she did us when we’d come home and this time lick her (Missy still washed her as though she was a puppy when she was grown). Somewhere behind her Sally is there, probably laid down asleep but soon she’ll prick up and finally meet the whippersnapper who filled her shoes. Rest in peace Missy, and thank you for everything you have done for us. I shall miss your kisses, breaking off bits of biscuits for you, you coming to find me upstairs when I’d put something in the microwave and gone to do something back upstairs and it had finished as if to say “you’ve prepared food, are you planning on eating it” and you always finding the dirtiest water to swim in.
