We often find links between the movies we watch over a weekend, but this one is wild:
We just watched A Hocus Pocus double feature and now we’re watching The Gabby Petito Story the opening credits say it’s directed by and co-starring *drum roll* Thora Birch 😳

Begging true crime armchair detectives to understand that you are not Sherlock Holmes you are not special you will not solve the next big case you are doing nothing but putting misinformation out there and spreading harmful rumors and stereotypes. Real life and real tragedies are not murder mystery games you are actively harming people with your insane theories you are centering yourselves rather than the victims you are speaking over survivors and families and friends you are making up batshit insane lies just because you have a “feeling” and it’s not okay it’s not harmless it’s legitimately dangerous and heartless and it’s fucking disgusting how you refuse to see that
#I understand having an interest in true crime I understand wanting to follow certain cases#but having an internet connection does not give you to credentials and the ability to solve a case#and these are real people who deserve respect when you speak about them and there are families and survivors who ask for stories to be#shared to raise awareness#but making wild guesses and accusations is not spreading awareness#it’s attention seeking its clout chasing and its dangerous#it is not ‘suspicious’ that a women survived a massacre it’s a fucking /miracle/#and to begin placing doubt and blame and suspicion on her just to grab people’s attention and make the case sound ‘juicer’#is fucking appalling how fucking dare you#it’s happening with this case a tiktoker is getting rightfully sued for making wild accusations against a woman who was a complete stranger#to her#about a case she has absolutely nothing to do with#it happened with the gabby petito case#there were goddamn self proclaimed ‘psychics’ posting videos#claiming they could ~feel her spirit~#claiming she was absolutely alive or claiming she died this way and that and they knew for sure because they were ‘psychic’#I think people who claim to be psychic to prey on grieving families and draw attention from big cases are fucking disgusting#it happened here!!!! in my town!!!!!!!#a woman was kidnapped!!!!!#and instead of focusing on her and helping her everyone focused one one interview her boyfriend gave on the news#I saw this interview myself as it aired#and people online were claiming they knew for sure he absolutely did it it had to be him he HAD to be guilty#and while it’s true they often investigate the partner first in these cases#these armchair detectives were claiming he was just like Chris fucking watts#‘because he moved his arms a certain way’#because behavior analysis videos have poisoned people’s brains into seeing every blink every stretch every twitch as suspicious#the case was solved shortly later. he had absolutely nothing to do with it. this man lost his wife and child and was deemed guilty#by the Internet. because he raised his arms above his head in stress????#fuck off#it’s fucking gross

This is the direct consequence of not believing Amber Heard. It makes it easy to begin poking holes in the stories of other victims, changing the narratives around domestic violence and discrediting women. This idea of "mutual abuse" is extremely harmful and needs to be debunked on a massive scale.
Abuse requires an unequal power dynamic. It occurs when one partner wields power over the other, typically social, economic, or physical. For this reason men are much more likely to abuse women. There ARE male victims of abuse but most of them were abused by other men, and a tiny percentage were abused by women who held positions of power over them (e.g. an older woman with a much younger man). Mutual abuse is a MYTH, it does not exist and is frequently used against victims of abuse to discredit their story. Reactive abuse occurs when the victim begins to fight back against their abuser, but this is not equivalent to abuse, it is self defence. Victims are more likely to admit to using violence than abusers, who are less likely to take accountability for their aggression.
Abusers will employ a technique called DARVO: Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim and Offender. They begin to accuse the victim of being the abusive one and position themselves as the victim. If police misread this situation it can be fatal- police arrived at the home of Gabby Petito and her boyfriend to find a hysterical woman and a calm man with scratches on his arm. They arrested her. A short while later, she was found dead. He killed her.
This is the direct consequence of not believing women and not understanding how domestic violence functions. Famous women who have been abused are becoming the scapegoats in changing the narratives around domestic violence and making it socially acceptable to blame the victim.

To be clear I myself consume a lot of true crime media and I think that it’s perfectly natural to be curious ab the darker side of human nature. Like even if you view true crime as inherently exploitative, which ngl it kind of is, human beings are going to gravitate toward the macabre no matter what, are going to try and salvage some sense out of the senseless, to get ahead of death and murder and anything that still has the audacity to leave us in the dark in the digital age. THAT BEING SAID the recent fandomization of true crime is a whole fucking crime in itself imo. And I’m not just talking ab ppl who fetishize serial killers, even though at this point I’d rather study those ppl under a microscope than the serial killers in question, but like… idk maybe I’ve been naive but it just feels to me that we’ve entered a new era of true crime that is more exploitative and commercialized than ever. YouTubers doing their fucking makeup while speculating wildly ab the hanging of a six-year-old. Those insufferable “wine all day true crime all night” or whatever the fuck podcasts. Gabby Petito’s death being co-opted by the internet and then immediately afterward Lifetime shits out another one of their tacky-ass biopics ab it. Most biopics aren’t even bothering with the pretense of asking victim’s family’s consent anymore before they go ahead with production. Toni Colette re-enacted the incredibly graphic death of a real ass person three separate times in The Staircase biopic, and The Thing About Pam had went so far as to reframe the murder of a cancer patient as a dark comedy, like this is fucking Heathers or something. And of course this whole quasi-resurgence feeds into the idea that beautiful white women are in a perpetual state of jeopardy that can only be resolved by the lickboot preservation of our fucking police state like it ever did the victims any good. Moral of the story Fuck Capitalism and let’s maybe try to have some fucking class hm

I really loved that episode! I think my only real complaint is like so many others have said, the lack of a one on one scene with TK and Carlos. I would have loved more physical contact between the two as well. I mean, no hugs, no kisses? In an episode where they're planning their wedding? Not even kisses on the cheek, kisses on the head? I think 3x13 set the bar for how they can put those things in scattered throughout the episode and it spoiled me, because now I want to see it all the time and we haven't had that AT ALL this season... yet. But other than that, it was great.
Them at the firehouse, swapping lunches was so cute.
I knew all along that Carlos wasn't going to be the one to break. I kept seeing people on Twitter say how they want Carlos to go off on Owen, and the whole time I was thinking "This is CARLOS, he's not going to go off on Owen (or his Mom but people like to leave her out). I did love that when TK went off, and Carlos was pretty much like "Yeah! What he said!" It was so cute and funny and so on brand for them both, because TK doesn't care if you're a parent or law enforcement, he will speak his mind.
Love the fact that it's canon Carlos has sisters for the people who wanted him to have sisters. It didn't matter to me either way, but I did just assume he was an only child and I wish we hadn't had to wait 50 episodes to find out for sure. But also, I have to repeat what I saw some others say, and it's that, if Carlos has sisters.. especially if they are older sisters.. where were they for him when he was dealing with his past traumas? How did they deal with him coming out? How did they deal with him deciding to marry Iris?? More plot holes, I guess.
I loved Mama Reyes talking about that part of the past, and how she regrets it. I would have LOVED to see the dinner with her and Carlos where they talk about it. They could have part of some of the episode out to do that, I think. But oh well.
I loved that scene with TK and Owen at the end. But again, no hug?? I so wanted another TK and Owen hug again!
Marjans storyline was so so good! I love her so much. The couple was so much like the Gabby Petito story, it was so obvious. But anyway, Marjan deciding to follow them, set up a plan for the girl to leave.. and then when the girl didn't, following them again and hiding so she can get concrete video evidence of abuse. Fighting him off, I cheered, she kicked his ass! The promo for next weeks episode looks amazing. I can't wait to see Marjan be a badass again, even though we know it ends up with her in the hospital.

one of my favorite things we did on our trip was dispersed camping - which is basically camping anywhere on public land but with no amenities. i loved it because you could camp beside lakes, in meadows, up the side of a cliff, in the middle of the woods, whatever you wanted. it was a lot of fun to not know where we would be sleeping that night and the challenge of finding the prettiest possible spot in the area. at first i was quite intimidated but ended up loving it. the only times i felt nervous were when we stayed beside a large lake in rural missouri, only because we were near the highway and i had just read a particularly horrific true crime story about a trucker in missouri.... and then again when we camped in the tetons. the whole time we were in the tetons i couldn’t help thinking about gabby petito because we were tracing her final steps without knowing it, like a lot of tourists do every year. it was hard to find a spot around the tetons because it was a july weekend, but we found an incredibly isolated spot in the woods off a rural park road but i absolutely did not want to stay there because it was so dark from the overgrowth and so out of the way (and so buggy) and so we ended up staying in a group site right at the base of the mountains which was so much busier but to me a lot more comfortable. later when poking around, i found out that dispersed campsite was very close to where she was found. it is just so heartbreaking that she was trying to enjoy the same place we were and her horrible partner took advantage of the isolated atmosphere of a dispersed campsite.

Hallmark's 'Aurora Teagarden' Franchise to Return With Prequel Movie Led by New Stars (Exclusive-ETOnline)
Tumblr media
Hallmark is reimagining one of its most popular, long-running mystery movie franchises.
Hallmark Movies & Mysteries' Aurora Teagarden Mysteries, which aired 18 movies from 2015 through early 2022, will return with a prequel film, Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: Something New, led by a new cast, ET can exclusively reveal. Filming will begin shortly.
Skyler Samuels (The Gabby Petito Story, The Gifted) and Evan Roderick (A Tale of Two Christmases, Autumn in the City) will step into the shoes of young Aurora Teagarden and young Arthur Smith, respectively. Marilu Henner, who played Aurora's mother, Aida Teagarden, in the franchise, is set to reprise her role.
Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: Something New takes place during Aurora's (Samuels) post-college days when she finds herself back home in Lawrenceton. While her mother, Aida (Henner), struggles to keep her newfound real estate business, Aurora supports herself by working as a teacher’s assistant in a crime fiction class and waitresses at the local diner at night, where she shares her love of researching true crime with her friend, Sally, and police officer, Arthur (Roderick). When Sally’s fiancé doesn’t show up at their wedding rehearsal, maid of honor Aurora gets Arthur to help her search for him. When they discover a body, everyone assumes it is Sally’s tardy groom, but when it turns out to be someone else, Sally’s fiancé becomes the main suspect.
“Our viewers have been waiting for more adventures with Aurora and her friends -- what better way to do that than to take them back to when the young, amateur sleuth was just coming into her own?” said Emily Merlin, Development Manager of Programming at Hallmark Media. “The Aurora Teagarden franchise is a fan favorite and we’re excited to share this new chapter with viewers.”

I know this isn’t the first time this franchise has done something akin to a headlines story but the blatant Gabby Petito rip just seems insensitive tbh

Happy nice ask day! Here's some lone star questions for you!
Suprise, Tim Minear has put you in charge of LS! (In a perfect world where everyone gets paid a fair wage for their work.) What's next for Tarlos besides the Gabriel of it all?
If you could bring one past character back, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
You get to do a crossover with *any* other show, past or present, what show would it be?
Pick a special episode: Valentines day ep, Halloween ep, Christmas ep, musical ep, animated ep, AU ep (like Mateo's sitcom dream)
You get to delete one thing from the show's history without messing anything up, what do you get rid of?
Pick a celebrity guest star. What would their role be?
Firefighter TK or paramedic TK?
For Carlos: Officer Reyes, Ranger Reyes, or something completely different non law enforcement
Flashback episode for TK's life in NYC (pre Alex), or a flashback episode of young Carlos growing up on the ranch (including his friendship with Iris)
A (new) work partner for Carlos or a new recruit at the firehouse?
Buttercup or Lou II?
TK's cousins or Carlos' sisters?
Andrea calling TK mijo or Owen calling Carlos son?
Reyes-Strand or Strand-Reyes?
If/when you've answered all of these, pass them on to others in the fandom, let's see everyone's answers!
Oh my god, I love these! Thanks for sending it to me @sugdenlovesdingle!
1. On one hand, I just want them to be happy and soft because they deserve it. On the other hand, I know that doesn’t make for compelling TV. So in addition to the Gabriel thing, I’d probably have Carlos develop an addiction of his own. Maybe it’s like, stimulants because he’s putting so much time and effort into finding who killed his father. But TK is in denial for the longest time because Carlos would never do that, and once he realizes that he’s wrong, it puts TK’s own recovery to the test getting Carlos the help he needs, but he pulls through and gets Carlos on the path to recovery as well. I know, I’m terrible, I’m sorry.
2. Either Julius to make Tommy’s life with Trevor very complicated, or Billy because I can’t help it, I love Billy. Or Alex trying to win TK back, just so I can watch Carlos could punch him out.
3. If it wasn’t for the identical cousin storyline Mateo had, I thought it would’ve been absolutely hilarious if they did House crossover and Owen’s other ex-wife was Lisa Cuddy, also played by Lisa Edelstein. But since they already did this kind of with Mateo, I’m going to be boring and say another 911 crossover would be cool. More of TK clocking Buck from a mile away and Eddie conveniently entering the scene immediately after, please and thanks, because that was so funny.
4. A Halloween episode for sure. I hate to say anything nice ever about Riverdale, but I loved the “3 different vignettes in one” episodes they’d do, especially the one in season 2. I think it would be REALLY cool to do something like that, where we have one story with Carlos investigating Gabriel’s murder solo and things get creepy, and then another story of the 126 showing up to a call except it’s to an abandoned asylum or something and they find out no one actually called (it’s like a ghost call), and then a third story of maybe Grace and the Wyatt and Charlie having a Halloween night in but it goes very “The Strangers” on them and someone is trying to break into their house but it’s really just like Judd’s daddy or someone totally innocuous.
5. A part of me wants to say the absolute blatant rip off of the Gabby Petito case, but I love Marjan centric episodes and there are not enough of them. So uh… probably the Owen stalker storyline. I don’t need more of Rob Lowe stroking his own ego on my screen.
6. Either Jensen Ackles or Timothy Olyphant as the new like, lead Texas Ranger. Basically taking over Gabriel’s position. And he would either a) be really keen on working with Carlos to help solve the murder because he has history with Gabriel or b) is behind the murder of Gabriel. Or both!
7. Ugh, this is so hard. I love both! I think he’s happier as a paramedic, but I wish he’d have more to do than drop the “BP is whatever over whatever, Cap!” line. Plus, I miss the little rivalry between him and Carlos when TK was AFD. I think I like him better as a firefighter, but I’m good with either.
8. REYES, TEXAS RANGER. I really wanted Detective Reyes, but I totally respect Carlos’s want to save people rather than figure out the case after the damage has been done. That being said, I kind of have a sneaking suspicion that a fellow ranger did Gabriel in, and I feel like Carlos will both NEED to get into the rangers to figure that piece out, and will WANT to next season to honor his father. Also, Team Carlos in a Cowboy Hat.
9. A Carlos flashback if I had to pick. IDK, I feel like TK has a lot of episodes that kind of center his trauma, so we know a LOT about TK, and less about Carlos. So it’d be nice to see more of his story, pre-TK.
10. A new partner for Carlos. You know… because he becomes a ranger… bonus if it causes a little bit of tension between him and TK like Cooper did! (I like the angst, I can’t help it)
11. Lou II! I love reptiles and TK being a lizard boy and Carlos being sketched out by them… all of it is adorable.
12. I’m gonna say Carlos’s sisters, just because I don’t think we’ll see much of TK’s cousins going forward unless Sydney decides to come after Owen for assisted suicide. Which would not surprise me in the least.
13. Andrea calling TK mijo. I just love it so much!
14. Reyes-Strand. I like the flow of Tyler Kennedy Reyes-Strand and Carlos Tomas Reyes-Strand better than Strand-Reyes.

Currently watching Crime Weekly's podcast episodes on the Gabby Petito case (they recorded them one year ago) and I can't believe that Stephanie and Derrick threw shade at the creators who were covering the case because 'it is the hottest story at the moment' only for them to say 5 minutes later that they also don't know all the things related to it 🙄

Not Insane in the Brain
Men calling women mad, what's new?
And Jane is sitting there, eating it all up like the fool she is, because she wants to believe Rochester.
This part is so difficult to recap, it makes me rage.
One time last year I was talking to my mum on the phone and among other things I told her I was working on story written from the point of view of the mad wife of Jane Eyre fame, but that I didn't think she was mad and that Rochester was lying. And you know what my mum said? She said she thought the same when she first read the book! She thought something was off about Rochester's story and Jane believed him because she was in love with him. I had no idea my mum felt like this. We're not in the habit of discussing literature. She didn't pass it to me, we came to the same conclusion independently.
Men trashing their exes (or soon-to-be exes or wives they want to be exes, as is the case here) is as old as language itself. Men calling women crazy is as old as humanity itself. What is so revolutionary about this book???
Are You Cray-Cray?
I mean, what Rochester describes is not even madness. What he gives us is an image of a woman who has a temper, is "intemperate and unchaste". That's... not madness. He says no servants would stay long in a house where she was the mistress.
You know who can never keep a maid for longer than a week?
Tumblr media
Emily Gilmore of Gilmore Girls. As Lorelai once put it: "these are women from countries that have dictatorships and civil wars and death squads and all of that they survived, but five minutes working for Emily Gilmore, and people are begging for Castro". Is Emily Gilmore mad too?
A difficult person to live with (if it's even true), but not someone with a mental illness. Not that there is anything wrong with a mental illness, of course. But then again, depends on your definition of mad, eh, Eddie?
Tumblr media
This is obviously from much later, also I think the institution it relates to was in America, but it's still interesting. And it's not much different even today. Take Britney Spears. She got her freedom back after thirteen years, but what was the reason for that conservatorship in the first place? Shaving her head? What is it with Britney shaving her head? Shaving one's head is just... shaving one's head. It means the person is left with bare head, until new hair grows out. Nothing more, nothing less. It's literally just hair. Kanye West has been getting away with much worse behaviour for years and his fans worship him. We know now what it was--Papa Spears wanted to control his golden goose of a daughter's money. That's what it was about, money.
You know. The same reason Edward and Bertha got married.
Yo! She a mad bitch.
Is she though?
Elizabeth Packard was committed to an insane asylum by her husband because she dared to disagree with him on multiple issues.
Christine Collins was committed to a psychiatric ward for saying that the boy who was returned to her was not her missing son. She was played by Angelina Jolie in the film The Changeling.
Lilith of the myths. She was banished from the Garden of Eden for not complying with Adam's wishes.
The burning of witches in medieval times. They were no "witches". They were women.
And what of the sad example of Gabby Petito? When the police stopped them, she immediately started apologising for having OCD (which she might not even have had, probably just wanted to tidy up the van, you know, like a normal person), for being mean to her poor boyfriend Brian because she was in a bad mood. But the 911 caller clearly stated that it was the man beating the woman. Yet she is the one apologising. This is the transcript of the police bodycam footage. By the end, Brian and the police are bros, they fist bump and the police officer shares with Brian that he knows what the guy is going through because he has a wife with anxiety. The next thing, Gabby gets murdered by Brian.
A symptom of madness?
Her tastes were obnoxious to me.
Really? Did she like jerk chicken?
Tumblr media
What have "tastes" got to do with someone's mental health???
Did she prefer reggae to his sad emo boy indie music?
It's not funny, you know. In fact it's a dangerous rhetoric. You think I'm exaggerating? You think there aren't people capable enough to claim madness is based on person's tastes?
Think about how bothered some get about pineapple on pizza, when they just simply could, you know, not eat it. Think about men ridiculing women, especially young girls, who merely like stuff that is specifically aimed at them, be it boybands or Barbies. While it's perfectly okay for them to trash a room when their football team loses a game.
Think about that and weep.
