The Other Port
(chapter 2)
.:: The Black Cat of The Port ::.
As both Ten Cents and Sunshine were heading to the cafeteria, many questions lingered in Ten Cents’ mind like a low mist on the horizon, “Who made those dolls? What is the key for? And why were they inside the storage room?”
“Ten Cents, Ten Cents!” Sunshine grabbed Ten Cents’ shoulder, snapping him out of his trance as he nearly walked into me.
“Oh, sorry about that, Captain Starr sir” Ten Cents said embarrassedly while Sunshine held the dolls tightly behind his back.
“It’s ok Ten Cents, I take it you both finished cleaning out the storage room?”
“Yes Sir, We were just on our way to the cafeteria.” Ten Cents nodded,
“Good, may I have the keys back?” I held out my hand, “Oh right! I almost forgot about them.” Ten Cents searched in his pockets
“Here you go sir,”
“Thank you,” I turned my gaze towards Sunshine.
“Anything you want to report to me as well, Sunshine?”
“Me? Uh no sir. Nothing to report”
I was feeling tired myself, so I didn’t bother asking anything else and let the two on their way, “Have a good night you two.”
“You too, sir” Ten Cents and Sunshine chimed together as I walked away, Ten Cents let out a sigh of relief, “Well that was almost too close for comfort,”
“You’re telling me,” shrugged Sunshine.
“Let’s just get something to eat and then hit the sack, ay?”
“I just hope someone got us good food this time.” Sunshine grumbled.
When they entered the cafeteria, they saw Big Mac, O.J., and Top Hat sitting at one of the tables chatting amongst each other about their day. O.J. turned and noticed Ten Cents and Sunshine.
“Welcome back lads. I hope you both aren't burnt out from your last job.”
“Meh, it was just storage cleaning. Nothing that we couldn’t handle.”
“Did ye find anything interesting in that old room?” Big Mac asked
“Well actually there is.” Sunshine soon reveals in his hands, the button-eyed dolls.
“What is that?” O.J. asks, having to look closer at the dirty dolls.
“And why do they look exactly like both of ye.” added Big Mac.
“That’s what we’ve been wondering too when we found them. Do you know who made them?”
“How should we know about some filthy old ragdolls from the garbage?” Top Hat remarked.
“Oh like how your head is full of nothing but garbage?” remarked Sunshine, insulted.
The crew all had a hearty chuckle at the joke except for Top Hat who was most offended but couldn’t think of a comeback for he was feeling tired.
“Speaking of garbage, where's Warrior? I thought we saw him walk past with you, Big Mac.” Ten cents asks.
“He already went to sleep. Don’t worry, he showered before then.” answered Big Mac
“Ah well we should go get our meals before-’’
“It’s just rations Ten Cents.” Sunshine groaned,
“What?! Again?”
“Sorry boys, with the constant busy work schedule we have this whole month we don’t have time to make meals so we resorted to using rations and other instant meals. It’s not much but it’s what we’re going to have to work with for now.” O.J. explained feeling sorry for them.
Looking back at the rations, Ten Cents sighed in defeat, “Well then, I guess we’ll just grab some and go back to our bunks…”
And with that, Ten Cents and Sunshine reluctantly grabbed a ration for the both of them and headed back to the barracks. O.J., Big Mac and Top Hat could only watch as they left until O.J. spoke.
“It’ll be alright boys, it won’t be like this forever.” trying his best to give them some hope from the situation but already left out of earshot.
Once at their bunks in their pajamas, the two ate their rations, they were as dry as the sand on the beach and not very appetizing.
“You see what I mean, Ten Cents?”
“About what?”
“About wishing that our current situation was better where we don’t have to work as hard.”
Ten Cents gulps and sets his ration aside. “I get what you mean, I know it’s been hard on all of us and they’re still doing their best, but I won’t lie, I miss when we had decent food and less of a heavy workload to handle.”
“You think that’ll ever happen soon?”
“Probably not for another few more weeks of this.”
Ten Cents looked over to the nightstand next to his and Sunshine’s bunk beds. Sunshine had placed the two old dolls right next to a framed photo of their whole fleet including their captain; When times were better, especially since they took it welcoming their new recruit, one who he was very fond of since they met.
Ten Cents yawned knowing another day of hard work awaited them in the morning. The two said nothing and threw away their rations into a nearby trash bin, and got ready to sleep.
“Tomorrow’s gonna be another busy day huh?” Sunshine yawned as he began to nod off.
“Yeah, another hard day of work...”
Ten Cents answered, shutting off the lights, the room now only being dimly illuminated by the moon outside their window shining down on the dolls. As the two slept however, a black silhouette of a cat overshadowed them and observed them beyond the window.
-
The morning sun shone brightly as Ten Cents, Top Hat, Warrior, Big Mac, Hercules, O.J. and our new recruit, Tillie stood in the employee lounge waiting for me to give them their orders. Everyone except for Sunshine was present in the employee lounge.
Although it seemed all the older workers of my company were focused on getting their schedule for that day. Sunshine was trying to figure out how to bring his doll look alike to work with him that day, once he came up with a solution, he made a dash to the employee lounge.
“I’m so sorry everyone, I… nearly overslept,” lied Sunshine, “I’m not late, am I?”
“Nope you just came just in time, Sunshine.” Ten Cents assured him
“That’s a relief”
“Alright everyone settle down!” my voice rang out through the PA speaker.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do today, a tramp steamer is arriving into the port and we’ll need all hands on deck to dock and unload it. Hercules, you’re in charge of bringing the tramper in, Big Mac, Top Hat and Warrior, you three are to help guide it in,”
“Yes Sir.” Hercules, Big Mac, Top Hat, and Warrior affirmed before proceeding to their respective vessels.
“What about the rest of us sir?” Tillie queried.
“You three are to help anchor the tramper to the dock, O.J. will show you how.”
“Yes Captain Starr!” Ten Cents, Tillie, and Sunshine affirmed before following after O.J.
On their way to where the tramper was to be docked, Sunshine couldn’t help shake the feeling that they were being watched.
To confirm his suspicions, he looked behind himself and noticed something dark moving on top of some crates.
“Hey Ten Cents I think I see something?”
“Oh yeah, what's up?”, Ten Cents asked,
“It’s over there by the cra-” Sunshine pointed. But as soon as he returned his gaze at the crates, the thing was nowhere to be seen.
“What..?”
“You must've been seeing things. It's still early today but come on, there's work to be done”
They picked up their pace to catch up to Tillie and O.J. As they continued to walk past the glistening ocean, Sunshine couldn’t shake off his confusion.
He swore to himself that he wasn’t seeing things but he couldn’t figure out how even though the thing disappeared from his sight, why he still felt he was being watched.
The crew all suddenly stopped as they caught sight of Zorran, Zebedee and Zak, some of the employees of Zero Marine, our rival, were on their way to work as well.
“Well look what have we got here lads? Scrooge McDuck and his nephews?” Zebedee and Zak guffawed at Zorran’s remark.
“Shut up, we’re only just on our way to do our jobs,” Ten Cents said.
“What? off to get another contract?”
“We’re just on our way to bring in and unload a tramp steamer that’s all.” Tillie replied,
“Kindly leave us alone and we’ll be on our way-” O.J. retorted.
“Wasn’t trying to start any trouble with you, old man” oiled Zak, “Yeah, was only trying to make friendly conversation” Zebedee added sarcastically, “Also nice doll you got there Sunshine” Zebedee mused.
“What doll?-'' Tillie looked back at Sunshine and noticed in his binocular bag was a button-eyed doll that resembled him sticking out of it.
“Aw, you plan on having a tea party after your jobs of the day?” teased Zak
“Is your age now the number on your uniform, Sunshine? How cute.” Zorran joined in.
Sunshine’s face was as red as his hat as he tried to hide his doll.
“Oi leave him alone or else-!”
“Ten Cents, don’t even think about it”, snapped O.J.
“Or else what Ten Cents? You gonna fight me?” Zorran challenged
“Don’t you dare, lad” O.J. scolded holding back one of his arms.
“Let me at him, O.J.!” Ten Cents growled
“Hey calm down now… let's get going before you do something you’ll regret,” soothed Tillie.
“Yeah, listen to your little girlfriend Ten Cents!” Retorted Zorran, this was the final straw, Ten Cents won’t take any longer.
“Oh now you’re -!” yelled Ten Cents lunging at Zorran.
“That’s enough Ten Cents!” shouted O.J.
O.J. and Tillie tried to hold Ten Cents back from the Zeros, all the while poor Sunshine stood in utter silence afraid and ashamed to do anything when he turned his gaze to a rooftop of a building and saw the thing he saw earlier on the crates, which turned out to be a cat. He couldn’t believe it when he saw it clearly now as it stared at him.
“Hey there it is again!” Sunshine shouted pointing up to the rooftop making everyone, even the Zeros look up. Tillie and O.J. took it as a chance to get both Ten Cents and Sunshine out of there before things could escalate further and grabbed their arms and took off.
“Hey what are you two doing?”
“Getting us away from them” O.J. groaned
Once they weren far enough from the Zeros, Tillie heaved a sigh of relief
“Now Let's keep going, we can't be late for the tramp steamer.”
“Yeah you’re right.”
“Be a lot more sensible, will you, Ten Cents?” shouted O.J., “If we hadn’t dragged you out of there, you could’ve gotten into even more trouble.”
“He was only trying to defend Sunshine, that’s all.” Tillie explained.
“Did you guys see it?” Sunshine chimed in
“See what?”
“The black cat, I saw it earlier on the crates. It was on the rooftop!”
O.J. stood in confusion.
“I didn’t see it, Sunshine, it was the heat of the moment that distracted us.” Said Tillie
“And if we did that’s something we shouldn't worry about. Ten Cents, please learn to keep your head on straight, will you? Last thing I want is something bad to happen to you.” OJ pleaded.
“I will in future, I’m sorry O.J.”
“Good, now let's head over to the dock, that tramper should be here at any moment.”
And so they did, but the thought of the black cat still played on Sunshine’s mind.
The sound of a chorus of tugboats blowing their hooters indicated that the tramp steamer was ready to be docked. Ten Cents, Sunshine, Tillie, and O.J. had arrived on time.
They watched as Hercules, Big Mac, Warrior, and Top Hat moved the ship close to the dock. A couple sailors aboard the steamer were at the bow and stern holding ropes.
“Right lads,” said O.J., "You must work quickly to safely secure this ship to the dock. Tillie, you’re with me in securing the bow, Ten Cents and Sunshine you two are in charge of the stern. Grip the ropes with both hands and tie them to the cleats, we must work together on this, should you lose your grips, this tramper could end up floating away from the dock, understood?”
“Yes O.J.!”, Ten Cents, Sunshine, and Tillie chimed together.
The young stars and O.J. took their positions at the ends of the ropes while Warrior, Big Mac, and Top Hat stood at their tugboats in case.
“Ready lads?!” called O.J.?
“Ready!” declared Ten Cents, Sunshine, and Tillie.
“Good, release the ropes!” O.J. shouted towards the tramp steamer.
The two sailors threw down the long ropes from their vessel and they landed down on the quay. Ten Cents, Sunshine, Tillie, and O.J. ran and grabbed hold of the ropes.
“Ready to pull!” Ten Cents called out.
All four Stars on the dock did their best to safely moor the vessel, Ten Cents and O.J. were holding strong to the ropes as Sunshine and Tillie tied their ropes to the cleat hitches.
But as they worked, Sunshine thought he heard the sound of a cat meowing behind him.
Turning to where he heard it, he saw the black cat yet again from the rooftop and the crates.
“Hey Ten Cents, I see the cat again.”
“Can it wait Sunshine, I’m busy here” Ten Cents strained.
“But Ten Cents it’s only over-...”
As Sunshine pointed over to where the cat was, the rope began to slip out of Ten Cents’ hands.
“SUNSHINE DON’T LET GO OF THE ROPE!!”

I think the reason I don’t typically like AUs where Soukoku join the ADA together is that writers will use it as a way to villainize the Port Mafia to an extreme and ridiculous degree. Like EVERYTHING becomes their fault. Every mafia member is ooc. Kouyou is always evil. Mori becomes a super villain. All of the nuance of Bungo Stray Dogs, all that gray morality, just disappears because people want Dazai and Chuuya to be good™. And one of them being a mafioso conflicts with that author’s image of what it means to be good. It messes with the roots of BSD’s story to the point that the characters are unrecognizable.

BSD: Other Side
The Prologue
Warnings: blood, gun, knife, child kidnapping, bombs, taking hostage, kidnapping, guns, wounds, injuries,
Word keys: Japanese, thinking, English, Russian,(translations)
ADA was having a peaceful day, the cases weren't very serious and more calm such as a shop robbery and run away teens.
The work was done pretty quickly due to the easy cases and all members were relaxing:
Kunikida was filling out his book for next week's list, Dazai was relaxing on the sofa with his headphones on, Atsushi was talking with Kyouka, Kenji was watering the plants, Ranpo and Fukuzawa was talking while Ranpo was eating a candy as usual when the agency's door knocked.
The knock was frantic and rapid like someone was running away from a serial killer right after them in a horror movie. Everyone's attention was now peeked as they hadn't get a this desperate and frantic knock this past few weeks.
Most of them returned to their work as Naomi stand up to open the door. while some of them such as Tanizaki and Atsushi had focused on the desparate knock on the door.
Before Naomi reaches to the front door to open and greet this hasty guest, a voice call from the other side of the door with urgency and desperation, words were hiding a big fear and dripping despair while she keep knocking the door with a clear fear and urgency. "Привет?! Пожалуйста, люди сказали, что вы можете мне помочь!!!" (Hello?! Please people said you could help me!!!)
Naomi quickly gets up and answers the door only to meet with a teen girl all wounded, she was holding her right arm and her face was filled with fear and desperation. Her wavy hair had a white hair strands of hair mixed with her brownish hair and some of it stuck to her forehead, neck, and cheeks with dry blood. Her clothes were screaming they weren't from Japan while their slightly darker skin tone from natives proves it right. But she didn't look like a russian native as well despite speaking fluent russian.
"помощь! они поймали ее!!!" (help! they caught her!!!) Girl speaks with a desperate tone again as she holds Naomi's arms tightly, her sweats showing how long she had run till coming here.
"What happened to you?? Come on in!" Naomi speaks with worry as she gestures inside the Agency to the girl yet she shook her head and spoke with more basic words and muttered two words.
Now all members had stopped what they were doing and focused their all attention to the front door and the russian words. Tanizaki had already standed up via his sister's shocked and corcerned tone. "Naomi?"
"пожалуйста, они ее поймали! У меня мало времени!!!" (please, they got her! I do not have much time!!!)
The girl shout with the worry in her voice again. there was a slight irritation as well, probably being not understood by people..
"Yosano-san!" Naomi speaks as she gets in the office, the members are basically shocked and also confused to see a wounded teen girl next to Naomi, who was clearly not Japanese. Yosano understand why Naomi ha dcalled her right away when she saw the wounded girl she lead inside.
"On it!" she said before taking her aid kit with a quick grap and rush to Naomi and the girl next to her. she was quick and experienced with years of working as a doctor.
The girl backed away, pushing Yosano's hands aside as she speak loudly once again. The Russian words sliding out of her mouth with a quick rush and taking her fear and panic with them. "нет на это времени! Мой лучший друг в большой опасности! ты должен ей помочь! Пожалуйста!!" (no time for this! My best friend is in great danger! you must help her! Please!!)
"Hey, calm down!" Yosano speaks in confusion but also there's also a hidden irritation of her work getting blocked like this but she could see this girl trying to tell them something.
That wasn't a secret.
With due to stuation, all ADA had turned towards the girl. Atsushi went to try to calm her while Kyouka followed him with a both confused and suspected tone.
Yosano turned to Ranpo with both curious and slight concern she tried to hide after the girl had calmed down by other members. "So? Can you tell what's the problem with her, Ranpo?"
The detective nods before taking out the candy in his mouth. "It's nothing I can't solve."
"We know that, Ranpo-san. But can you tell us what happened to her?" Kunikida speaks with a serious yet concerned tone. He was the one that calmed down the girl despite the language barrier.
Ranpo takes out his candy in his mouth before speaking with his calm and his usual childish behavior "simply, her friend is holding hostage not so far from the city. still alive but I'm not sure how long the kidnappers would keep her alive yet"
each member was shocked. no voice or sound was in the room, it wasn't the first time they are dealing with a hostage case but knowing this girls language barrier and disadvantages in an unknown area, yet alone now dragged inside this kind of mess, hit hard to their human emotions..
The girl had patched up and her wounds were bandaged by Yosano by this time already, she was still nudging Yosano's or Kunikida's sleeves to take their attention time to time to say more things in russian. Which all of them still coudnt figure out what she is saying.
"She is pleading for us ta save her friend. I mean, who woudn't be scared if they were in her place after all?"
The brunette who was laying on the table break the silence. He look at the confused members innocently at first before smiling like a cat. "What? Didn't you guys knew I know a bit russian?? How terrible of you!" he had put his back of hand on his forehead like a dramatic pose.
Kunikida take a deep breath with irritation before sighing "That could have make all the situation go more faster." he rub his temples " Who would go for this case now?" he asked to his colleagues while crossing his arms over his chest.
"Don't look at me, I'm still injured from the last fight!" Dazai said while holding his newly broken arm.
"Didn't you brake your arm while trying another suicide attempt?" Atsushi speak with a hint of confusion and very slight hint of exhuastion from the brunette's actions.
"Suicide attempts are my personal missoin, A-tsu-shi-kun~"
"I'm going to visit a new candy shop" Ranpa speak before eating another candy while spinning with chair he sat on slowly.
"I need to take my cow to vet as well!" the boy says with a smile as usual while placing the plant in his hand to table. "I'm also promised to carry an elder lady's package for her today"
Yet before others can protest as well, the door at the side opened and the elder man with yukata gets inside calmly with his stern expression.
"What's happening here? What was about the shouts I heard earlier?"
"President!" Kunikida quickly replied with slight shock remaining in his voice from the things happening suddenly. "Sorry to bother you, President! A teen come here, wounded, and seemingly wanting us to find her friend who is holding hostage. Yosano-san take care of her wounds and we were talking about what to do"
"So? Why are you guys guys talking instead of getting the hostage to safety?" Fukuzawa looked down to his workers sternly and firmly yet there was a undeniable confusion was in his voice
"We.." The lime haired man paused before bowing his head slight before speaking again "We are on it, President!" Kunikida replied firmly before turning to his colleagues and start giving the orders to them firmly to find the missing friend of the girl.
It wasn't long before they find the building where he girl held, thanks to Ranpo, it was a empty factory which was used to leave the empty packages or containers.
Kunikida raised his hand stopping the others following him behind when a soft melody and song filled the half empty abandoned factory, echoing through the left to rot containers.
"To your right, two shadows.."
The agency members weren't talking, the words spoken in Japanese were clear to them. But the russian speaking girl was also frozen with the voice and if Yosano didn't shush her she would speak more as she pointed where the voice was coming but tried to calm down after realising the surroundings.
"Lingering in my mind, tell me now
If it's too late. Cause seven shadows on the left screaming for help.
Look to your behind, let the shadows ambush you"
The song continued till the owner of the voice coughed, by the time the members there were confused and curious what the song meant as it seemed dark but also familiar. The black haired detective let out a silent chuckle as he took out his glasses from the pocket in his cloak.
"Ranpo, what are you laughing for?" The doctor asked with a silent whisper as she turned to the detective with a confused look.
"Nothing. Just this missing girl is a smart fella."
"What do you mean by that, Ranpo-san?" White haired tiger boy asked as he got slightly nervous with the tension in the place.
"You guys still didn't realize it, huh? That's amusing that you guys have no idea" The detective chuckled again before holding his hands up and making gestures like they were talking about a plan in the reality he was talking with a catish smirk. "The song is a clue she is giving without getting herself exposed. Two or more men on the right, seven, less or more, men on the left. And some men are surrounding us and watching us."
.

A.n: sorry for the late post I was sick and couldn't even lift a finger this week. The russian words are from google translate, sorry about that. I'm still not very happy with how translations turn out, I could simply stop putting them in future.

The mermaid au is amazing! Let’s do something funny and sweet
One day Ikaris follows Thena and finds out about Gil! Imagine if he is so protective that he grabs Gil and pulls him into the water to wrestle with him and almost drowns him. Ohhhh imagine how angry Thena would be! 😂
"Gil!"
Gil grinned, his chest swelling at the sight of Thena waiting at the end of the dock to greet him. She was wearing one of his henley shirts with a belt around her hips. Sersi had bought her dresses and brought them over, but Thena insisted that she preferred his shirts to wear.
Thena knelt down as soon as he killed the motor of his little dingy, letting it drift closer to the edge of the dock until he could secure a rope around the post. "How was work?"
"It was good," he chuckled as he pulled himself in, already tying a knot to secure himself. "Still no word about them catching anyone else. If anything, people are talking about Kro's escaped catch less and less."
"That's good, right?" Thena tilted her head as he pulled himself up the ladder and onto the dock. She stood smoothly; she was really getting the hang of her knees.
"It's very good," he confirmed, happy to linger close to her after his long day. Although he had been letting himself call it a day earlier and earlier. The sun was barely beginning to set, but he had been in such a hurry to get home to Thena he had barely remembered to store his equipment properly.
Thena placed her hand on his shoulder, scratching the material of his waterproof backpack. "I know I should be inside. But...I wanted to come out to see you. And I made sure you were the only boat around the island."
"It's okay, Angelfish," Gil grinned, pressing a kiss to her forehead, which clearly and obviously delighted her. "I know you know to be careful. I'm happy to see you too."
Thena tilted her head at the boat behind and below him. "You should get your equipment out. The box said there would be heavy rain."
He hadn't quite gotten around to explaining to her how tv worked. "Good idea; I'll be right in."
Thena gave him a soft smile she had started having more and more often. She looked up at him, swaying herself with her hands behind her back. She was asking for something, in not so many words.
Gil gifted her with another kiss, which may or may not have been what she was looking for. "I'll show you what I brought you inside."
Thena happily bounded up the deck and back up to the house ahead of him, bringing his backpack with her.
Gil dropped back down into the boat to pull out anything left in it. He would tarp it over, of course, but the humidity wasn't something his poor, rusty old toolbox needed more of.
Two arms exploded out of the water and constricted around him.
Gil tried to get his bearings as he was dragged under. He pried his eyes open, able to see the pink and red sky getting further away. The little dock he had wasn't exactly in deep dark waters, but he was travelling at an alarming rate. He thrashed and turned.
He was terrifying.
He had striking features, for sure--pale skin, sharp bones, intense eyes that were almost a little familiar. His tail was long, with peppery scales and strong looking fins. He had fangs, and he certainly looked like he did whatever the underwater equivalent of crossfit was.
"You!"
Gil didn't think about how he could understand what he was saying bizarrely well for being underwater. Air--he needed air. He tried to swim up to the surface but his assailant was infinitely stronger and faster than him in this element.
The Fangtooth gripped Gil again, very clearly uncaring that he needed oxygen.
"You're why she's been missing for weeks?!"
Ikaris. He couldn't begin to think of why, but the name popped into Gil's head in that instant. It made a lot of sense, between the words he said and the resemblance between them (Thena would hate knowing he had thought that).
Gil kicked as best he could, but he was easy prey for Fangtooth here. He let out his last breath, watching the bubbles float upward. His vision started to blur as a spot of glowing light hit the water.
Thena swam to him in the blink of an eye, swishing her tail between herself and her brother. She pulled Gil up to the surface with her, holding him with a hand on his chest so he could worry less about keeping himself afloat and more about breathing. "It's okay, Gil, just breathe."
Ikaris surfaced a second later, snarling at his sister, "what are you doing?!"
"What are you doing?!" she snapped right back at him, not moving a hair further away from Gil as he gasped for breath. "I didn't realise you were in the habit of drowning innocent humans!"
"Innocent?!" Ikaris roared at her, crossing the distance with his shoulders above the water. He pointed a finger in her face, splashing water at her as he did. "This human abducted you!"
"He saved me from being caught!" Thena matched her brother's energy easily, both of them baring their fangs in full at each other.
Ikaris leaned back slightly, his stature clear even just bobbing in the water. "Makkari told me about that, Thena. But you've been gone for weeks before now."
Gil looked at Thena, finally getting some semblance of a healthy breathing pattern. "You went home between visits, didn't you?"
"Of course," Thena looked at him tenderly, running her thumb over his cheek. "He's just being a clownfish."
"I am right here!"
Gil laughed as much as he could after nearly drowning, "because he's always poking his head into anemones that aren't his?"
"Oi!" Ikaris belted at them. He swam a little closer again but Thena didn't hesitate to thrash her tail and even swipe at him with her hand. He swatted her away. "Thena, he's dangerous!"
"You don't know anything about him!"
Gil could have argued that technically, they were both correct. But Thena was already swimming him back to the dock, helping him up the ladder and then following him.
"Y-You-!" Ikaris' jaw dropped as his sister not only climbed the ladder like a pro, but also tugged at the human clothes she was wearing. "Wait a barnacled minute!"
Gil really liked a lot of the expressions they had.
Ikaris 'backed up' as it were, before speeding forward and launching himself right out of the water and onto the dock. He gripped the posts to secure himself and help his tail slither up the last bit.
Gil just stared at him before looking at Thena, "can you do that too?"
Ikaris growled at him, "of course she can, human. Anyone with a tail could."
Gil looked at Thena again, who didn't seem concerned with looking at him in return. "Anyone with--so you-"
"What do you want, Ikaris?" she barked at her brother, walking closer to where he was 'seated' on the dock.
"What do I want?" he balked, shaking his head in exasperation. He looked at Thena with a slightly different expression, though. His anger, having boiled over, lowered to a simmer. "I want to know my sister is unharmed."
"I told Makkari-"
"To see it with my own eyes, Thena," he corrected her, firmer but not back to yelling. His hardened expression did something, though, because Thena sat down in front of him, even folding her legs beside her somewhat like she would her tail. "Are you okay?"
"I'm fine."
"You were caught in a net," he rushed, practically cutting off her assurance. He leaned forward, partly gripping her for balance and partly squeezing his sister's shoulders to assure himself she was there. "You were caught by the bounty hunter. You are not fine, Guppy."
Thena gave her brother's ear a tug for what Gil had to assume was a childhood nickname. "I am not a hatchling, Ikaris. As you said, I met Gil a number of moons ago. And did you not see me regularly in that time?"
"See you reg-" Ikaris cut himself off, baring his fangs again. "You say that as if the water is not your home, Thena. This is home!"
Ikaris gestured to the water below and behind them, but Thena looked behind her, up to the cabin. "Don't."
"Ikaris-"
"Don't!" he jabbed his finger in her face again. He knew from experience to snap it away before Thena could bite it. And with such force that her teeth clicked. "Why are you up here, Thena?"
She looked from the cabin to Gil, lingering a small but respectful ways away from their conversation. She waved him over.
He had misgivings about that, but he reluctantly came to his Angelfish's side. "Uh, hi."
"Human."
"Ikaris," Thena said more firmly, making her brother roll his eyes. She put her hand over Gil's, "this is Gil--Gilgamesh, actually."
Ikaris tilted his head at Gil one way and then once in the other direction. It was much cuter when Thena did it. "I didn't know humans could be named Gills."
"Just Gil," Thena shook her head, holding up a finger, "just one."
Ikaris eyed the finger with disdain all over his face before looking at Gil again. "Fine...Gil."
He said it the way Gil thought the name Kro.
"Perhaps you can tell me why my sister is spending all her time on the surface since meeting you?" Ikaris fixed him with a look that Gil recognised as the look any brother could get when he was worried. He could hide it behind his aggression all he liked, but it was clear that he was afraid for his sister's safety. "With legs?!"
Gil cleared his throat, his eyes darting down to Thena's pale thighs. "Look, the legs were a surprise to me too."
"What?"
"But Thena came and found me on her own," Gil shrugged, speaking as honestly as he could from one man to another. "I was glad she did, though. I first met her after she saved me from falling overboard."
Ikaris looked disappointed that he hadn't drowned.
Gil continued anyway. "I was going to sail out and just talk to her again, but then a storm hit. I was a little worried about her, but she came and found me the next day."
"Right," Ikaris grumbled, crossing his arms and letting his eyes trail down to the necklace that was secured preciously around his sister's neck. She raised a hand to it, as if to protect it from Ikaris' harsh gaze. He flicked his eyes over Gil, "fisherman?"
"Y-Yes," Gil gulped. He had gotten so used to Thena's sweet smiles and warm, green eyes, he had forgotten that they could look truly terrifying if they wanted to.
"And you didn't even think to try and capture a creature of your myths and legends?" Ikaris raised a brow. He had every right to ask; they were cautious of human on principle for a reason.
"No," Gil professed in complete honesty. "I don't blame you for not believing me, but I would never...as soon as I saw her, I knew Thena was something else...something special."
Ikaris took one look at the look on Thena's face and stuck out his tongue, "hrrrghk!"
"Shut it!" Thena hissed at him, although he hissed right back at her. She pursed her lips, "I do not need your approval, Brother. All you need to know is that I am safer here from that monster than I am in the waters. And Gil is making sure of that."
Gil shivered; he hoped he could continue to make that statement true.
Ikaris ran his eyes over Gil again, just to make sure he knew that he was well and truly disgusted with and by him. "Watch your step, human. I will be watching from below the surface. And if you ever-"
"Ikaris, stop it!" Thena stood in a huff, kicking at him with her bare feet. "He doesn't need you seagulling at him!"
Ikaris swatted her away from him, although he did slowly and surely start leaning in the direction of the water again. "You're the gull!"
"You are!"
Gil did his best to contain his chuckling. They really were brother and sister. He caught Ikaris' eye before the merman fled. "I'll take care of her--I promise!"
Ikaris hissed at him, with longer fangs and angrier eyes than even Makkari had bared to him.
Gil sighed, "I guess I wouldn't expect them to like me."
Thena brushed off her shirt/dress and held out a hand to him, "they don't have to like you."
He supposed she was right. And he should be grateful Ikaris hadn't legitimately killed him for catching him getting cuddly with his sister, he supposed. He wilted against Thena, who offered her support silently and immediately.
"Where are you tools?"
Underwater.
"It's okay, I'll get new ones," Gil waved over his shoulder as they headed towards the cabin. "I just want to sit down, right now."
"Right now?"
"No, it's okay--it's just an expression."
"Expression?"
"Yeah, like when you say Ikaris is a clownfish because he's intrusive."
"He's also stupid," Thena felt was very necessary to add. She smiled as Gil shook with laughter against her shoulder.

rotates legends zone dymanics in my mind
#the nemesis speaks#the legends zone#hi. sorry. apparently this is The AU of the Day. im going to bed soon promise#but god one thing i do really get obsessed with so fast is porting characters to another situation#and seeing how their relationships evolve#AND i love Bonding. so this is great.#anyway to nobody's surprise i AM envisioning akari as the protag and rei as counterpart#and i think being stuck as a child developmentally for a century of running and hiding and fighting across universes#has some uh. Fun Lasting Effects#and then she Forgot ever going through that and was also cut off from her family (her FAMILY-)#so it's. hard. the whole world feels Wrong. her emotions are too Big for her body to hold#she's still a child but it's like she's doing it wrong somehow. she isn't like anyone else#which is what directly relates to her running away from the home she gets put in bc they fundamentally CAN'T get it and also don't try#and she's so hurt and frustrated and she KNOWS she could be on her own anyway! one of the ways in which she's too grown-up#but that's hard too it's just hard in different ways#and then she finds cyllene and lav and ingo again and it's just like. a Click. somehow it's so much easier to Exist when they're there#....this is mostly abt akari i guess. oops. there's more abt the others but there is a theoretical tag limit on these things#AND ALSO I THINK SHE'S A DIVINE OR CHOSEN SORCERER. so that's another thing. magic she can't 100% control#that just burns through her when she gets emotional#ingo meanwhile has not felt An Emotion in five years. and laventon is off in lala land approximately 50% of the time.#and if you ask cyllene she'll say her only emotion is Shouting. but she's a fucking liar#but more on that another time!

chuuya headcanons?
Ask game
A) Realistically - he keeps dog treats on him to feed local strays and tries to make sure they have clean water out somewhere as well
B) Hilarious - Has a hard time buying alcohol since people keep thinking he's underage and using fake IDs to do so
C) Heart-Crushing - Since he never had a real childhood or a normal life, given that he was a clone made to house Arahabaki and only escaped when the facility exploded, he doesn't know what a normal life can look like. He's heard about it, from Kouyou obviously, and thinks he doesn't deserve one either and fully expects to be dead before the age of 30.
D) Would never work in canon but canon is shit anyway - Volunteers at a local animal shelter with a fake ID just to play with the dogs since he can't have one himself. Kouyou kinda forced them to let him keep visiting when they realized who he is but he hasn't brought any trouble with him and he would protect that place with his life anyway so.

The Other Port
(Chapter 5)
.:: Scraping It Off ::.
Ten cents slowly began to wake up, he began to contemplate the events that unfolded last night. It felt like such a weird dream and yet it felt so real, The Other Captain, Other O.J. and Top Hat, even Sunshine was there too. Was it even a dream?
Then Ten Cents began to realize something; It was morning, the barracks looked… normal. Gone was the lively, rich, bright, and colorful bedroom, now he was back to plain boring barracks he knew.
“Are we back in our world?...” Ten Cents whispers to himself not feeling sure if they’re really back.
Ten Cents gets off from his bunk bed and looks on the bunk above him to see if Sunshine was okay. He was relieved when he saw Sunshine still here and sleeping peacefully.
“Maybe this was a crazy dream after all,” Ten Cents thought to himself as he began to wake Sunshine up in a calm and gentle manner. “SUNSHINE! GET UP IT’S MORNING!!”
Sunshine jolted awake from the sudden loud voice from Ten Cents, “What?! What?! What’s going on?!” Sunshine shouted, looked around and noticed how everything was back to normal.
“Ten Cents, What was that for?!” Sunshine shouted,
“Hey, you know i’m just messing with ya” teased Ten Cents
“But not when I'm sleeping, man.” Sunshine remarked, sighing in frustration.
“Not while we’re sleeping too,” a voice suddenly spoke up accompanied by a head poking up from another bunk; It was Top Hat,
“We’re working in a difficult time, you two. We employees of Star Tug & Marine have a position to keep up, we need to get as much rest as we can so we have more energy to do work early in the morning.”
Before Ten Cents could reply, a pair of groans cut him off, “Come off it, Top Hat, at least they’re up early and bright, unlike you,” Big Mac scoffed, Warrior laughed at this.
Before Top Hat could retort, the PA speaker turned on, accompanied by small feedback from it.
“Good Morning Star Fleet, I see everyone is already up so we can skip the wake up call and get to the announcements. As of now we’re going to have to work even harder than before for this week following the accident that occurred yesterday. Big Mac and Warrior you’re going to be assisting Hercules with the docking and unloading of another tramper, Top Hat you're on garbage detail today after that you’re to transport the rail fairies across the port, and since O.J isn’t available, I’ll have to ask Captain Zero to lend one of his employees to do his duties in the meantime-”
“But Captain,” protested Top Hat, “can’t one of us do O.J’s jobs, we’re more than capable of handling his work as well as our own.”
“I would but I’m afraid O.J’s duties would be too much to handle on top of your already scheduled duties. And I can’t spare my youngest employees to do them because of what happened recently.”
“Can’t we just do O.J’s work as a punishment?” asked Sunshine.
I let out a sigh, “I would Sunshine, but I’m afraid that because of the companies you three kept waiting as well as making a fool out of the company in front of the tramper’s crew, no one at the moment is going to trust you with your duties.”
I couldn’t see the expressions of my young employees, but I could sense they felt worse after what I said.
“You three are just going to have to start from the bottom and work yourselves back to the top starting with scraping the barnacles off of pier 3, Scuttlebutt Pete will meet you there and supervise your work. That is all, best of luck to all of you.”
The P.A speaker let out a crack and a squeal as I turned it off. All of my employees set off to do their assigned jobs of the day, as they walked out the entrance Ten Cents and Sunshine couldn’t help but feel as though Top Hat was staring coldly at them.
Ten Cents and Sunshine were quiet to each other as they made their way to Pier 3. Some ways into their journey, Ten Cents decided to speak up, “I’m sorry for waking you up the way I did, Sunshine, but... do you remember what happened last night?”
Sunshine paused for a moment then asked “You mean with the Other Captain, the Other Top Hat, and the Other O.J, even the food he gave us?"
“Yeah all of that.” Ten Cents replied.
“How do you know all of that? I thought it was just a dream I had,” Sunshine asked perplexed.
“I was there with you and you were there with me. It was weird, the whole thing had to have been some dream of sorts right?” Ten Cents ventured.
“I suppose, but how do you know we’re not having a dream right now?” Sunshine asked.
“Only one way to find out,” Started Ten Cents before grabbing Sunshine’s left arm.
“Oi! not too hard, you’ll pull my whole arm off!” Sunshine yelped.
“It’s not there anymore…” Ten Cents remarked as he stared at Sunshine’s healed hand.
Sunshine retracted his arm back and slapped Ten Cents across his face with his other.
“Ow geez!” Ten Cents recoiled, “What was that for?”
“I just had to be sure you felt pain as well, just to be sure that we both aren’t dreaming.” Sunshine explained before looking back at his hand.
Ten Cents thought for a moment, “Maybe some rope burns can go away quickly,” he suggested.
“But how would that explain how we had the same dream last night?” Sunshine raised an eyebrow.
Their pondering was cut short when they heard someone running up to them, it was Tillie.
“Hello Ten Cents, Hey Sunshine! I see you two out pretty early this morning. Did Captain Starr already give out the announcement for the day?” Tillie asked.
“Yeah he did, but don’t worry you didn’t miss anything. We’re still scraping barnacles today.” Ten Cents reassures Tillie
“Oh right… Well I guess it’s lucky I have my own scrapper and gloves just in case, my sister got them for me after I told her about yesterday’s accident.” Tillie recounted
“How did she take the news?” Sunshine asked
“Well… she took it in stride, a bit better than I imagined but she understood the situation. Anyways we better get going to the Pier.” Tillie said, trying to liven up the mood.
“Yeah you’re right, we can’t keep Scuttlebutt Pete waiting for us any longer.” Ten Cents sighed.
Ten Cents led the way to Pier 3, Tillie walked in the middle humming a tune, and Sunshine followed behind looking at his now healed hand again thinking that maybe The Other Port was real, all while a black cat was following them from afar. The three found Scuttlebutt Pete waiting for them at the entrance of Pier 3.
“You three made it here in good time.” Greeted Scuttlebutt Pete.
“Thanks Scuttlebutt, we’re all here and eager to work.” Tillie exclaimed.
“Good, well here you go,” Scuttlebutt Pete started handing the scrapers, gloves, and buckets to the three, but Tillie declined her pair.
“I brought my own scraper and gloves, Scuttlebutt.” Tillie explained.
Scuttlebutt Pete was a little taken aback but smiled, “Didn’t think any of you would be eager to get to work on your punishment. At least that makes one of you.”
“Why’s that?” Tillie puzzled.
“You’ll find out why, but before we start, what end of the pier do you three want to start from?” Scuttlebutt queried
“The ne-” Ten Cents began
“The far end of the Pier!” Tillie cutted in
“The far end it shall be then,” Scuttlebutt Pete smiled.
Ten Cents and Sunshine winged at this. As they followed Scuttlebutt Pete to the far end of the Pier the boardwalk creaked and groaned as they walked along it. Tillie also noticed that the pilings were rotting and covered in colonies of barnacles. When they arrived at the far end of Pier 3, they found a strange contraption waiting for them.
“This is what you three will be standing in as you scrape the barnacles off the pilings. It’s a ‘floating platform’, once you finish scraping off the pilings I’ll come back and lift you three back up onto the boardwalk and move it to another spot.”
“Say uh Scuttlebutt, wouldn’t this be a lot easier if we were standing in a boat?” Sunshine queried.
Scuttlebutt Pete interjected, “A boat isn’t stable as the platform, if you stepped too close to the side, it would tip over and you three would end up in the ocean. Trust me, this is a safer alternative”
Sunshine still felt unsure about this. Ten Cents went in first before he helped Tillie and Sunshine get onto the platform and slowly, with the help of the pulleys holding platform, lowered the three down to one of the pilings and they got to work at once.
Meanwhile, Top Hat was refueling his railway tug at the coal yard when he heard a familiar whistle, it was one of the harbor tugs from Zero Marine hauling behind it a couple Star Line fuel barges, on board was Zorran. Top Hat ran over to his tug’s wheelhouse and radioed over to the passing tug,
“The refinery is in the other direction Zorran, why are you coming this way? If you’re here to gloat, I don’t want to hear it.” Top Hat huffed.
What Top Hat received as a reply however he couldn’t believe came from Zorran,
“I just wanted to come by and say that I’m sorry for what happened to OJ,” Zorran lamented, “the recklessness of your younger crewmates is unforgivable.”
Top Hat didn’t know what to say,
“What are you trying to accomplish here, Zorran? I don’t understand” Top Hat puzzled.
“I’m not trying to accomplish anything but the work your captain assigned to me. I’ve always had a deep respect for OJ. This may not mean a lot coming from me, with us working for rival companies, but I hope he recovers” Zorran consoled.
Zorran tipped his fedora to Top Hat who watched as the Zero Marine harbor tug turned around and headed across the bay to the refinery. Top Hat then walked to the stern of his tug and stared at the docked paddle steamer at the Star Pier, his eyes welling up with tears.
By mid-afternoon, Ten Cents, Tillie and Sunshine felt tired. Scraping off the barnacles was hard work especially to Ten Cents and Sunshine, their leather gloves were worn and the scrapers were rusty. True to his word, Scuttlebutt Pete finally decided it was time to give the three a break.
“Well lads, you’ve earned your hour long break, make use of your free time wisely because you all got a lot of scraping to get back to,” advised Scuttlebutt Pete.
“Finally, I was getting tired of scraping for this long,” exclaimed Sunshine wearily.
“Yeah, at least for now we can catch our breaths, my arms are killing me” Ten Cents sighed as he put his scrapper in his pocket.
“Well what can we do during our free time?” Tillie asked.
All three thought about it for a moment as Scuttlebutt Pete pulled the suspended platform up carefully to the pier’s surface. Once they got off the platform, Ten Cents had decided, “well we can just hang out here for the whole break and maybe have something to drink.”
“Say, Scuttlebutt Pete, are there any refreshments nearby?” Tillie queried.
“Fraid not. Sorry lads, I can go and bring some, especially to cool off from the heat of the day,” Scuttlebutt Pete apologized.
“Oh thank you Scuttlebutt Pete.” Sunshine sighed in relief
“But you three have to stay put here and try not to get into any trouble while I'm out, do you all understand?” Scuttlebutt Pete remarked.
“Yes Scuttlebutt Pete.” all three affirmed in unison.
“Good, I’ll be back as soon as possible,” and with that, Scuttlebutt left the three young harbor employees at the pier with each other’s company.
“I guess while we wait… what’s been going on with you two?” Tillie inquired.
“Well…” Ten Cents began,
“Last night something weird happened to both of us.”
Tillie perked up at the sound of this.
“Oh? What is it? Was it something interesting?” Tillie quizzed.
“Do you remember that small door we found in the employee lounge?” Ten Cents hesitated,
“Uh… yes? There was just a wall of bricks behind it, what about it?” puzzled Tillie.
“Well last night, me and Sunshine chased a mouse to the employee lounge where the small door is and-” Ten Cents was suddenly interrupted by a sudden yet faint sound coming towards them.
“Meow,” it was a cat; its fur was colored black and it looked tatty and frail, rather strangely it was missing an eye. Tillie and Sunshine turned their attention towards it.
“Oh look, a little cat!” Tillie said adoringly at the black cat.
Sunshine took one look at the cat and instantly recognized it from yesterday. “Hey I remember you,”
The cat walked slowly up to Sunshine. Sunshine was nervous until the cat started to rub itself against Sunshine’s leg affectionately, purring all the while.
“Aww it likes you, Sunshine!” Tillie exclaimed, getting closer to pet the cat.
Sunshine was hesitant about being near the black cat since it was the main catalyst of yesterday’s incident, but despite the look of the tattered one eyed cat he couldn’t resist its seemingly friendly nature as he got down to being eye to eye with the cat.
“Huh, you don’t seem bad, are you lost?” Sunshine asked the cat as he pet it.
“He must be a stray considering how thin it looks.” Tillie sighed at the feline.
“Yeah… Poor thing.” Sunshine added.
Ten Cents however wasn’t thrilled to see the black cat. He marched over to the cat
“Oi! Get lost!” Ten Cents hollored.
The black cat, frightened by Ten Cents’ sudden approach, scampered away to the entrance of the boardwalk. Sunshine and Tillie were surprised and a little offended.
“Why’d you go and scare it off, Ten Cents?” Sunshine puzzled,
“Have you forgotten it is the exact reason why we’ve gotten into this mess?” Ten Cents chastised,
“No, I haven't forgotten Ten Cents, but I don't think it warranted you scaring it off.” faltered Sunshine,
“It’s only a harmless animal, Ten Cents,” Tillie soothed, “It probably didn’t mean to cause what it did,”
Ten Cents took a deep breath, he knew Tillie was right. His thoughts were then suddenly interrupted by the sound of two pairs of boots making their way over to them.
“Well well well, looks like you three are in a spot of bother,”
It was Zip and Zug.
“Don’t you two have anything else better to do? We’re trying to enjoy our break” Sunshine hissed,
“Hey calm down Sunshine we’re only here cuz we heard what happened, and we thought we’d check up on our fellow deckhands,” Zip insisted.
“Yes,” added Zug, “after all if we had put OJ in a hospital room, we’d feel very upset ourselves”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Ten Cents scowled.
“Oh nothing, it's just if we had hindered the old man we’d feel very remorseful.”
“Are you saying I don’t feel remorseful?”
“Well by the look on your face I’d say not,”
This infuriated Ten Cents, clutching his scraper in his pocket, his thoughts swirling through his head. How dare Zug accuse him of being remorseless about O.J.’s injuries.
Tillie soon saw this in Ten Cents' face, she could see how this was getting under his skin, putting a hand on his shoulder.
“Ten Cents… please calm down. He’s just trying to get to you…” Tillie soothed.
“Tillie’s right Ten Cents, he’s just trying to mess with ya.” Sunshine added.
Zip and Zug turned to leave
“How pathetic,” Zug smirked, “Ten Cents can’t even stand up for himself, those smaller than him always get in his way,”
“What a disgrace to The Star Fleet” snickered Zip.
It was then Ten Cents snapped, he broke free from Tillie and Sunshine, drew his scraper from his pocket and charged at the two zeroes.
“Ten Cents, no!” “Stop!” cried Sunshine and Tillie as they chased him.
Ten Cents tackled Zug suddenly and began slashing Zug’s face with his scraper.
“DISGRACE TO MY COMPANY?! PATHETIC?!” Ten Cents shouted.
Zug squealed in agony as Zip tried pulling Ten Cents off Zug but Ten Cents shoved him off into one of the wooden railings of the pier. Tillie and Sunshine then ran up and yanked Ten Cents off of Zug, his face red with fury and tears welling in his eyes.
“I’M NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENED TO OJ!” Ten Cents seethed.
“That’s enough!” boomed another voice, it was Scuttlebutt Pete who was holding a crate of bottles of soda.
Zip pulled Zug back onto his feet, Zug limped to the entrance of the pier,
“You’re in for it now,” he scowled at Ten Cents.
Zip turned to the three stars, “I’m sorry about this,” he apologized before following his colleague.
“Scuttlebutt I can explain, I-”
Scuttlebutt Pete held up his hand in front of Ten Cents,
“Save your explanation, you’re going to have to give it to Captain Starr. However, either way you’re going to be in a heap of trouble with him.” Scuttlebutt Pete said solemnly.
Ten Cents let out a sigh, somehow he knew deep down, Scuttlebutt Pete was right.

i know the translation is a tentative one, and i’ll wait for a proper one before really committing to this, but
mind empty, thoughts still full of "the guy who’s always smiling and is actually the Final Boss”
so Port has final boss vibes not only in the sense that yeah he was a force to be reckoned with, but also you don’t expect him to be one. And it makes sense, because if your first impression of him is based on current times, you get the idea of a sentimental, melancholic, calm guy with a weird affinity for the ocean
then you look into his history and it’s.... it sure is something.
so idk i really like the idea of Hima acknowledging this side of him, because the unexpectedness is something i see irl with people who aren’t familiar with the country beyond tourist brochures.
Like, there’s countries whose past is kind of well known in pop culture, but Port ain’t one of them so most people simply don’t know, which is understandable, there’s many country histories I don’t know either. I’m just happy Hima seems to have taken this into consideration when working on the character, you know?
and Hima gets a lot of flack but idk i always felt he was doing a good job with Port. Do I wish he levelled the playing field with him and Toni and show Port isn’t actually the one bothering his neighbour the most historically? Yes, absolutely (mostly for fandom’s sake). But maybe he’ll show us more of that in the future.
Like, according to that translation they “used to be close but now [their] relationship is very delicate.” I would die happy for a comic that showed why that is
