Power Play
It’s been seven months - let’s watch another episode!
There are only so many ways I can say ‘this theme song is a banger’ but it IS-
Haven’t watched the intro for a while though and there are a lot of quick light/color flashes that I didn’t register before.
I love the two lonely power station employees all decked out in Ducks gear from head to toe just completely neglecting their jobs to watch the game. What a mood.
Wraith: “I fear this plan may have grave consequences.”
Seige: “What makes you say that?”
Wraith, watching the Aerowing descend slowly upon them: “Just a gloomy premonition.”
Oooh, I know this episode! I took some inspiration from it for my Mystery Skulls OC, Callahan! Only a little tho.
BABY GRIN!!!
It’s actually really cool that we get to see more about Puckworld and it’s culture/people/etc. A lot of shows skim over the lore that isn’t immediately important to the story at hand, so it’s really nice to find one that doesn’t skimp out on the detail.
“You need two goalies, two centers! …also two refs, and the guy who hogs the popcorn.”
Nosedive: “Two minutes to game time, and you’re having flashbacks?!”
ngl I’m kinda jealous of Dragonus’ cape. It’s certainly an aesthetic.
I get that Stanley probably isn’t even well-liked by his teammates, but how did none of them hear him screaming as he was kidnapped?
Right out of the Ducks’ rink, to boot - where are their anti-Saurian security systems?!”
What part of the process of accelerating human DNA turns your skin and hair purple??
Oooh, the rink maintenance team is going to have a tough time fixing the ice after Stanley smashed it all up like that.
Stanley’s team just abandoned him the second things turned weird, but all the Ducks’ fans in the audience are still sitting there ready for a show, mutated monsters or no.
“That’s the first time the boards ever checked me.”
I would have gone feral over this show if I had watched it while it was airing - what was kid me doing?!
Not the Jumbotron!! How are they supposed to showcase the kiss cam now?!
Grin is still the only one who thinks Stanley might have some good in him, regardless of his monstrous appearance or attitude. That’s a good positive attitude to have. We should all be more like Grin.
Grin, dangling at the bottom of a four duck chain hanging off the stadium roof: “I must remember what my master taught me…”
Nosedive: “Yo, Grin! This is no time for a flashback!”
Wildwing, Mallory, and Nosedive are just standing back as Stanley wails on Grin, but Grin refuses to fight back, still certain there’s a sliver of good in there somewhere.
“20,000 players I’ve taught - not one of them writes! What, you can’t pick up a pencil?!”
Stanley, hanging with his face inches from the ice after falling through the ceiling and nearly dying: “You saved my life…why?”
Grin: “I could never hurt a fellow hockey player.”
Also Grin: *cuts the rope too soon and drops Stanley face first into the ice* Oops.
Listen. Listen. Early 3D in cartoons gets a bad wrap for being rushed or badly integrated but like, the Migrator launch sequence holds up. ANOTHER electricity monster! Dragonus is starting to show a pattern…
Stanley shows up to confront Dragonus for turning him into a monster, and ends up teaming up with the Ducks to take down the energy monster to make up for the trouble he
Nosedive, about the energy monster: “You think that thing has any inner good, Grinster?”
Grin: “No.”
Nosedive: “Why not?”
Grin: “It doesn’t play hockey.”
Somehow a big shock from the energy monster undoes the DNA acceleration, and turns Stanley  human again...?
Y’know what the man’s learned his Lesson of the Day he can have his reward.
Episode title drop!!!
They killed the monster by drenching it in water, and Stanley gave the Ducks a legitimate, heartfelt apology for his behavior.
Stanley, walking of into the sunset: “Hockey is a noble sport…and I’m unfit to play it.”
Nosedive, to Grin: “Wow. He’s even weirder than you.”
We se a new up-and-coming goon named Crash at the end of the episode who goes so far as checking the ref into the boards - hard enough for the poor guy to need to be carted off on a stretcher.
But surprise! The substitute ref is Stanley!
Stanley ejects Crash from the game for his bad behavior, and all ends well.

My brain came up with the pre-emtive theory that the reason–besides plot reasons–that the golden gaurd has an owl mask, besides him potentially being a clawthorne, is to possibly tie a parallel to Eda.
Okay so to list off the parallels, they're surface level so far, but they feel intentional, he has the owl mask, he's a genius teen prodigy, his brand of unique while definitely his own thing is kinda giving off eda vibes. He's also lazy much like eda as shown in the drawing of him with kikimora.
And let's not forget the "bye!!!" Thing that was done by both of them in the same episode, and early last season by eda too, proving this isn't some coincidence, it's an intentional detail that the writers want you to pay attention to.
Now, he's also different to eda. Morally, he's..Not great. He's a kid who has no problem giving gruesome deaths to people while completely blaze. He works for the emperor, and is from what I can see so far, loyal to him.
Because the golden gaurd is only sixteen, I'm putting this down to brainwashing. He's clearly desensitised to how fucked up the coven is.
Because we don't know much else about him, including his actual name. The rest of this is mere guessing and the result of too much time on my hands.
So anyway, the reason I think he's going to be a contrast to young Eda and not old Eda is that the current Eda has alot of history behind her at this point, and the message I'm trying to focus on is potential.
Young Eda was a genius teen prodigy. There's no disputing that, she was gonna graduate at sixteen(the same age as goldy bio leading the emperors coven now) this means she would've skipped two years at the max and would've been shooting straight into the emperors coven where with her brains, raw power and skill would've probably reached goldie Bois position fairly fast.
Things didn't turn out like that though for a number of reasons. One. Eda was cursed, limiting her magic use and leaving her ostracised. And two, she hates authority and denounced the coven publically at around his age. Something happend to sixteen year-old Eda for all of that brain washing that all the other kids her age were facing to be pealed back enough for her to take a leap of faith and not join a coven.
I think this might have something to do with the illegal history book she seems to own and the portal which she did have at that point as shown in one of the trailers.. she got exposed to the truth, if even just a sliver and could never turn back.
Eda's life took a drastic veer away from her peers and her own sister.
Now, about gold boi, he seems to live in the castle from what Dana's drawing implies, he orders Kikimora around so he can slack off(showing he also doesn't take the job to seriously like a hypothetical young Eda wouldn't have either). The emperor gives him special treatment from what we heard from Lilith and that is proof. If he's leading the coven, than its safe to assume that Lilith would've been killed for even daring to pull that kinda stunt.
I'm gonna assume. And this is only an assumption since I've only seen the first two episodes, but I think he was actually raised in the castle for this very job. Or for something atleast. Maybe a successor.
Natural talent snatched up at a young age and heavily brainwashed, far more than the other kids his age, (because he would be that close to the emperor/there also the chance he knows the titan thing is bulshit and is loyal to belos out of familiarity.)
Again. Speculation and guessing.
But what I'm trying to say is that young Eda and him are so similar in their feel, but there's this cold devide that separates them.
Young Eda was and is a violent, mischievous trouble maker, but I doubt she's a killer. Eda only lashed out to kill in ybos and agoaw because of extreme emotional distress she was in. Call it temporary insanity after her world had crumbled down around her.
Goldie kills because its his job. And while he does subtly warn Luz and eda to stay out of trouble for their own good (I think this implies there's a bit of good in him under all that) it's hidden under arrogance(another trait both versions of Eda have) making Luz react negatively to him.
He's also clearly terrifying to grown witchs that have to deal with him (because he sends the emperors threats and warnings and could probably fuck their shit up in a second.) Call him a messenger of death and other bad news.
I'm just gonna remind you again he's sixteen.
He's obviously his own character but he already feels like a reminder that if Eda had been born under different circumstances, if something happend along the way or if she was snatched up by the emperor like I'm guessing goldie was we'd have a more morally iffy Eda if that's even possible.
She wouldn't have had her sister to look out for and be looked after by. She wouldn't have met these mysterious friends of hers that I think played a crucial role in what she became. Idk.
This is an unstructured mess and I hope you're as confused as I am. I've suffered through this for a week. But its your problems now.

Title: Burning Pile
Words: 2410
Ship: Lava
Warnings: depressive episode, mentions of worthlessness. i wrote this based off od how my own depressive episodes tend to happen/come about so this might not be accurate to everyone so dont start yelling at me if its not "how depression is for you" anyone who says that will be blocked. its more of a comfort fic to get me through the last week of school.
Cole yawned, throwing his bag on the floor and rolling his shoulders, feeling them pop satisfyingly. Finally, he was home. Rubbing his eyes; cracking his neck and feeling his limbs come alive once more. He hated long car rides, they cramped his limps and make him travel sick. That’s the problem being tall and large; the back of cars wasn’t made to accommodate you. Jay kept telling him to learn to drive himself, but he didn’t have the time. Being a ninja was surprisingly hard work, with little time in between to learn to drive. He’d just have to make do.
“Oh Cole, hey dude, forgot you were coming back today,” Jay said, walking into the room, leaning against the counter, a strange look contorting his face, “How’s your dad?”
“Not too bad. Still pretty insistent on me being a good singer. Apparently, I just have to ‘dig deep. Something tells me he’s never going to back off with it,” Cole said with a laugh, Jay laughed, but the smile didn’t reach his eyes, “Are you ok man? You seem… I dunno. Off,” Jay’s face fell, his mouth scrunching nervously.
“You’re gonna be so pissed I didn’t tell you but… Kai’s not ok, he-”
“Wait what? What happened, where is he?’ Cole said frantically, his face falling in panic.
“I don’t- I don’t know dude! He’s barely been leaving his room, I don’t think he’s showered all week and I’ve barely seen him eat anything. We’ve tried to give him stuff and made him drink some water but-” Jay didn’t get a chance to finish, Cole pushed past him, dashing to his boyfriend’s room. From what he could gather, this had started a week ago. When he’d left. He hadn’t had a depressive episode in months now; had him leaving been the catalyst for all this? He was sure he’d been careful, he’d texted him every day. Even if they hadn’t called, he hadn’t asked. Besides, his dad didn’t know about them yet, he didn’t want to accidentally come out because of a phone call. Either way, if Kai had been in a bad way he hadn’t seemed like it. Apart from not asking to call, he’d seemed relatively normal. No slow replies. No giving texts. Nothing.
Cole softly knocked on Kai’s bedroom door, though it seemed pointless. No matter the response, he was going in there.
“What?” A hoarse voice called from inside the room. Kai’s hoarse voice. Cole opened the door, staring in awe at the state of the room. It was… messy to say the least. Clothes were scattered across the floor, making it so you couldn't even see the carpet. Mugs and glasses and bowls and plates littered around, just extra obstacles to the already high-staked trek to Kai’s bed.
“I’ve told you guys, leave me alone!” Kai yelled pushing himself up from his flat position on the bed, twisting his head around and staring at Cole, slightly gone out. His face fell when he realised who it was, staring at him solemnly from his position in the doorway.
“You’re back,” He murmured, twisting himself around fully so he was looking at Cole. Properly this time.
“Yeah,” Cole said softly, stepping carefully around the rubble and decay scattered all over the floor, sitting down on Kai’s bed when he finally got to it, “What… What happened?”
Kai shrugged, not looking at Cole. His hair was slicked back, matted to his skull with grease. Pimples beginning to form on his face, the lack of skincare irritating his delicate skin. Cole would be lying if he said he didn’t look gross and smell just as bad, but that didn’t put him off. Obviously, something was wrong, what kind of a boyfriend would he be if he didn’t do anything.
“I just… started feeling empty. I don’t care about anything and I have no motivation to do anything but… I didn’t want to be a burden, and I knew that if you suspected anything you’d come back so I just played it cool. Half expected one of them to tell you but… I guess they didn’t want you cutting your trip short for me either,” He muttered sadly, still not making eye contact. He couldn't. Not in this state. He was disgusting. His breath stunk like he’d just eaten something that’d been dead for a while and he probably stunk like something that’d been dead for a while too. Despite barely leaving his bed, his face was gaunt, his cheekbones beginning to further protrude, this time to an unhealthy degree and his eye sagging, purple eyebags hanging down as if weighing down his entire soul.
“Oh firefly,” Cole mumbled, opening his arms and wrapping them around Kai’s shoulders and pulling him close, feeling as Kai slowly relaxed into his body, not moving his arms.
“I’m sorry,” Kai said softly into Cole’s chest.
“For what?”
“Not telling you. Lying to you.”
“I don’t care. You have nothing to be sorry for, you weren’t in the right headspace and still aren’t. But I’m home now, so I’ll help you get out of this. Have you been taking your meds?” Cole said, still speaking in hushed tones. He wasn’t 100% sure why, but it seemed to be comforting to him, so he continued doing it.
Kai shook his head slowly, knowing he was about to get lectured.
“Ok, that’d explain a lot. Let’s start with that then,” Cole said simply, standing up and looking down at Kai.
“What?” He said, confused as Cole looked down at him expectantly.
“Come on. I’m taking you to take your medication,” Cole stated, holding out his hand, “If I bring ‘em to you, you’ll not feel any better.” Kai sighed and took his hand, letting his boyfriend’s strong form pull him out of bed. He slumped over slightly, his legs barely able to keep him standing. Letting his arm hang limply, his hand barely holding Coles, they walked out of his room and to the kitchen. He wasn’t 100% sure he was even in the room with him, his mind fuzzing in and out of focus from his surroundings. One moment, he was in the kitchen with his boyfriend. Next, he was in his head, letting his thoughts run wild. The latter was less than ideal; especially without the prescribed dosage of antidepressants in his system; but he didn’t have the energy to care.
“Ok,” Cole said, putting 2 small pills down in front of Kai along with a cup of water, “Take them.” Kai nodded, letting go of Cole’s hand and picked up the tablets, sloppily placing them in his mouth and swallowing them with the cool water. It felt heavenly, rolling down his dry throat and even drier tongue, giving them a new lease of life.
“Better?” Cole said softly, taking Kai’s hand back in his own. Kai shrugged, leaning against Cole and closing his eyes.
“Don’t bother going back to sleep on my arm, there’s more,” Cole continued, firmly but lovingly. Kai knew it was for his own good but… he just wanted to get back in bed. There was an immovable weight on his chest, dragging him down and increasing the effort to keep himself upright. He wasn’t sure how much longer he could actually stay stood up.
“Ok, have you had something to eat today?” Cole asked, taking Kai’s other hand and looking at him softly. Kai nodded, looking back, but not quite meeting Cole’s eyes. His heart twisted with every beat in his chest; his stomach turning in knots. He knew he couldn’t give in and let him go back to bed- he’d never feel better while he’s in this state- but the look in his eyes. It was so… void. So tired. So… emotionless. Yet full of emotion. Twisting and turning. Hurt, anger, sadness and an utter lack of anything positive.
“Ok. In that case, only 2 more things. We’re gonna brush your teeth and shower,” Cole said, Kai’s face falling in desperation. Evidently, he didn’t want to do either of those things; but Cole knew full well that he wouldn’t do it of his own volition.
“Please, firefly. We can watch a movie or something after that. I just… want you to feel better. I’m doing this for your own good. Plus, I’ll help you. I won’t get in the shower with you, but if you need help with anything I’ll stay in the bathroom while you’re in there. Just… how about this. Just wash your hair. Then I can put some deodorant on you and wipe your face. Are you ok with that?” Kai nodded in response, eliciting a small smile from Cole.
“Good. I’m so insanely proud of you Kai, for working with me here. I know how hard it can be when you get like this so I know how much it’s taking for you to do this right now. So, I’m insanely proud of you for actually going along with me,” Cole said sincerely, raising his free hand and resting it on Kai’s cheek. Kai leant into his hand and smiled a small, but tired, smile, raising his own hand and resting it on top of Cole’s.
Walking towards the bathroom, Kai took a reluctant breath and stepped inside, Cole following soon after. Cole turned the water on, pulling the mildly disgusting shirt off of Kai and tossing it into the laundry basket, letting him take off his boxers. Slowly stepping into the shower, Kai winced as the hot water hit his skin, cascading down his body and washing any surface-level grime away. His arms were lead; his eyelids hanging heavily over his eyes. He couldn’t do this.
“Cole,” He said weakly, not moving from under the warm water, “I want to get out.”
“Come on Kai, don’t give up now,” Cole replied softly, moving towards the shower and opening the curtain, seeing the exhausted look in his eyes, “I’ll wash your hair. How about that?” Kai nodded slowly. Cole smiled, pulling his own shirt over his head and discarding it to the side, reaching around his boyfriend and grabbing the shampoo, making sure Kai’s hair was wet enough before applying any. He slowly massaged it into his skull, looking down from his hair to Kai every so often to give him a comforting smile. Kai sighed contently, feeling the first bout of comfort; and even the first sliver of joy; in days. The feeling of Cole’s fingers on his head… knowing he was here and he was ok and alive. He was alive. Cole was here. The steady scratching and rubs keeping him grounded.
Quickly washing the shampoo out of Kai’s hair and turning off the water, Cole smiled, taking Kai’s hand again and leading him out and towards the sink. Cole grabbed his robe from the back of the door, bundling Kai up in it to assure he stayed warm. Cole laughed a little, looking down at Kai’s short, thin figure wrapped in his large robe, like a baby in a teenagers coat.
“What?”
“You just look really cute. You know like when a little kid just gets out of the shower. Their hair’s all slicked back and their bathrobe is about 10 sizes too big?” Kai blushed and crinkled his brow indignantly.
“I do not look like a child, not all of us were blessed to be 6 foot you know,” He huffed, pulling the robe around himself tighter.
“Yes, you do! You’re my cute little baby boy!” Cole said enthusiastically, noticing the smallest of sparkes light up in Kai’s eyes again as he glared indignantly at his boyfriend. With a laugh, Cole grabbed Kai’s toothbrush, putting some toothpaste on it and splattering it with water.
“Open up baby boy!” Cole said with a grin. Kai rolled his eyes and opened his mouth, allowing him to quickly brush his teeth. Grabbing a face wipe from the cupboard, he gently scrubbed the grease off of his boyfriend’s face. Then, finally, he grabbed a can of deodorant and sprayed him all over, banishing any thought of odour away from their minds (and bodies). Cole grabbed his shirt from the spot on the floor where it had landed earlier and pulled it back over his head.
“Hair drying time now,” Cole said, grabbing a clean towel from the cupboard and laying it over Kai’s wet hair, gently beginning to rub it, dragging the worst of the moisture out. Kai sighed in contentment, feeling himself shake and move as Cole dried his hair, the rough towel feeling heavenly as it dragged along his scalp, massaging any worries or unnecessary emotions away. Now all he felt was a deep feeling of peace and quiet.
“Damn, I’ll rub your head more often, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you this happy,” Cole said with a laugh, continuing to softly rub his head with the towel, unable to contain his laughter at the small noises of contentment coming from Kai. Eventually, he took the towel back off his head and smiled down at his boyfriend, ruffling his hair affectionately.
“Now we just need to get you some clothes, then it’s dumb movie time,” Kai smiled, his lips softly curving into a smile; a real one.
“Can I wear your clothes?” he said softly, his voice still hoarse from barely speaking this last week.
“Of course firefly, it’d be rude of me not to!” Cole said lightly, taking his hand and leading him to his room, immediately grabbing his largest hoodie and sweatpants. He helped Kai put them on and stared down at him in awe.
“You. Are. So. Damn. Small!” Cole said happily, looking at his boyfriend’s small frame being taken over by his large clothing.
“No, you’re just too big,” Kai said indignantly, stuffing his hands in the pockets of the hoodie.
“You know I mean it lovingly, you just look too cute in my clothes,” Cole gleamed, his face lighting up in pure delight. Kai said nothing, just let out a small giggle, his face glowing crimson.
“Now come! My sweet little baby boy! We shall watch dumb movies made for people 10 years younger than us until you feel better!” Cole exclaimed, sweeping Kai off his feet and holding him bridal style, carrying him towards his own room where he dumped him on the bed, turning on the TV and preparing for at least a day of watching weird movies and enjoying each others company.

A little overindulgence
((I wrote a S//al/ad Fin//g/ers stuffing + wg fic because I've been hyperfixating on the series a lot. This was a little hard to write since (except for episode 5 and 11) he's really the only character that talks, but I did my best and I do like how it came out. Enjoy! Or don't, I'm not your mom.
Content warnings: object vore, implied starvation, implied familial abuse.)) Salad Fingers slumped in his chair sadly. It had been quite a while since he had eaten something proper, and he found that marbles he had been eating the past few days hadn’t done much besides disturb his stomach further. His eyes lidded as he began to feel quite lightheaded, but before he passed out he could faintly hear a tapping in the distance. Before he got the chance to address it, however, he found himself falling into unconsciousness.
As he groggily woke up, a strange scent filled his nostrils. “What’s this?” He pondered, yet no other sounds in his house indicated to anything being amiss. He curiously followed the scent trail to his kitchen, where he was greeted by a menagerie of different foods, none of which he had seen before, most were a lot less viscous than the gooey muck he was used to shoving down his esophagus. He once again called out to see if anyone was there, although there was still no response.
“I suppose this is for me, then…?” He looked around nervously, not wanting to disturb if there was a guest in his home. The food looked good though, and after a while of waiting he certainly couldn’t stand to not give into his desires any longer. “W-well, this is awfully kind. T-They ought to come back eventually, I suppose I’ll thank them when they return…” Mr. Fingers took a seat at the table and marvelled at the selection, it really was an awful lot of food, definitely more than the average bloke would eat. Surely he couldn’t finish it all, but then again he wasn’t sure when he would have another proper meal, ever since he purged his mother from his life he had an awful time cooking by himself. Then again, his mother was gone, and she had also always told him not to be greedy, but now that she wasn’t around, he supposed a little self indulgence never hurt anyone.
The first food item he picked up was a corn dog, and upon taking the first bite he felt a strange mixture of regret and happiness. His body definitely wasn’t used to such nutritious food and flavour, but he found himself craving more the second he finished it, swallowing the stick as well. He tapped his fingers together gently, “well that wasn’t so bad… I definitely think I wouldn’t mind more of these delectable treats…” he looked around again, before gently placing one hand on his abdomen. It felt odd, he definitely wasn’t full by any means but this was still more food then he usually ate, his stomach wasn't pushed in at the moment, which was also new to him.
“A l-little more wouldn’t hurt surely-” He reassured himself, using one hand to grab a basket of popcorn, and using one finger on the other to very delicately rub his tummy, which was feeling quite sensitive at the moment. He shuddered at his own touch as he began to shove popcorn into his mouth. “M-mph, g-gaining a few p-pounds wouldn't be that bad anyways I’m sure… at least I w-won’t be as cold during the winter…” he continued to rationalize what he was doing in his head.
Soon he finished the popcorn as well, and he was still feeling hungry. He grabbed a plate of burgers, three to be exact, they were plain, with nothing on them, but they were awfully greasy. He slowly ate each of the burgers, sliding each one into his mouth, once he finished the last one he let out a small belch. “Urmph… pardon me….” At this point he felt pretty satisfied, although a small part of him wanted to keep going.
And so, he did. He was feeling rather thirsty at this point so he grabbed the gallon of milk he had in his fridge, briefly pondering to himself if his stomach could even keep it down. Before he had time to chicken out though, he pressed the lid of the jug against his lips, feeling the cold milk trickle down his throat and into his stomach. His belly was starting to jut out more, curving into a more rounded shape as it strained against his shirt, a small sliver of skin peeking out from the bottom.
Mr. Fingers laid back in his chair, drifting a hand over the swell. He ended up finishing off the entire gallon of milk, but he still didn’t quite feel like stopping. Steadying himself, he scooted his chair closer to the table and reached over, grabbing five large soft pretzels. He spent quite some time chipping away at the salty delights, and when he wasn’t gnawing on them, his hands were caressing his bulging belly.
He huffed heavily as he finished the last pretzel, his full tummy feeling tight to the touch, round and poking out of his shirt proudly, the weight of everything he had eaten pinning him where he sat. For a while he sat there, feeling both regretful and extremely satisfied. He could practically feel his gut weighing against his lungs, and the only things he managed to verbalise were the occasional grunt or moan. Eventually he managed to fall asleep where he sat, feeling full and warm inside.
When he woke up, he still felt a bit groggy, placing a hand to his head, he mumbled as he got up. Something felt off though, and as he came to he quickly remembered what had occurred the other night. His hands brushed against his sides, feeling the new pudge that had been added to his body. He was thankful that it wasn’t too much, although he was still certainly softer then he was the other day. His now decently chubby belly strained slightly against his clothes, although thankfully those still fit.
He blushed slightly, embarrassed by his gluttony. He gave his tummy a gentle pat and promised himself he wouldn’t indulge like that again for a while. That was, until he looked over at the table. To his surprise, someone or something had restocked and cleaned the plates they had set out, and filled them with more delicious delicacies. From just a brief glance he could see chicken wings, snow cones, cake pops, and more!
At first, he thought about ignoring it and going along with his day, but after grabbing one doughnut on the table for breakfast, and being just as delighted by the flavour as the food in his last feast, he somehow convinced himself to eat more.
As he gently licked one of the many snow cones set before him, he promised himself he wouldn’t overdo it like last time.

Roundup: August 2021
This month: Jane Eyre, Wide Sargasso Sea, Don’t Call it a Cult, The Secret Garden, Showbiz Kids, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Lucifer.
Reading Jane Eyre (Charlotte Bronte) - I’ve been meaning to read the Wide Sargasso Sea for a long, long time, but first I thought I’d revisit the source material. I find my opinion hasn’t much changed - I still love the prose, still love Jane as a character, and still find Rochester extremely unappealing. The section with Jane at school is the most engaging for me, and her early time as a governess at Thornfield, but as soon as Rochester shows up I just find him so irritating I have no idea why Jane loves him so much (other than he was the first man to ever show her a scrap of attention). I mean, I know to an extent - I've read the Takes, and part of fiction is accepting what you want for the character as a reader and what they want for themselves can be two different things, and that's not the fault of the text. I can be satisfied by the ending because Jane gets what she wants, I just can’t help but wonder about a Jane who was found by John Eyre before she went to Thornfield, or who took her inheritance and made her own way after Moor House. Byronic heroes just aren't my thing I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Wide Sargasso Sea (Jean Rhys) - The first Mrs Rochester of Jane Eyre strikes an uneasy tone to a modern reader; she does not utter a word in the novel, is depicted as animalistic and almost demonic, her story only told in a self-serving manner by Rochester, and conveniently disposed of so Jane can return to claim him. Rhys reimagines Bertha as Antoinette, a “white Creole” of Jamaica in a postcolonial take on the racial/social prejudices and hierarchy only hinted at in Eyre, where Bertha being Creole primarily an aspect of her Otherness, and in which Rochester describes himself as being desired as a husband because he was "of good race" . In Sea, although Antoinette is white (passing, perhaps), he sees her "not English or European either" and this contributes to his rejection of her (and perhaps his willingness to believe she is mad). The novel is surprisingly short - it skips over the meeting and courtship of Antoinette and Rochester (tellingly unnamed in the novel) entirely, jumping directly from her childhood/coming of age to the couple already married, and over much of Bertha's (renamed by Rochester) sad life in the attic. Still, there's a density to the writing, much is implied beyond the sparse use of words and recurring imagery - subjugation, reflection, and of course, fire - when freed slaves (Rhys changes the timeframe to after the passing of the Emancipation Act of 1833) set fire to Antoinette's family plantation, a pet parrot whose wings have been clipped by her English step-father Mason, cannot flee and falls to a fiery doom, in a grim omen of Bertha's fate. It did, however, leave me wanting more - I understand Rhys' stylistic choices and restraint, but in her effort to give voice to the voiceless, Antoinette/Bertha remains somewhat an enigma. Don’t Call it a Cult: Keith Raniere and the women of NXIVM (Sarah Berman) - I continue to be disturbed but intrigued by the NXIVM case, not only because of my abhorrence of MLMs/pyramid schemes, but my bafflement as to how this thoroughly unremarkable man was able to hold sway over so many women. My mild criticism of the two documentaries on this subject was that they tended to jump around in time so you never really got a good idea of what happened when. This book provides a well researched, detailed summary of events and linear chronology of Raniere’s perverse pathology reaching all the way back to childhood, and so is both an excellent supplement to the already informed, and broad overview to those new to the case. Berman is a Vancouver-based journalist who was present at Raniere’s trial and gives insight into witness testimony, supported by her own interviews and extensive research. There's less of a focus on the sensationalised celebrity members, with greater emphasis on the lesser known victims - including the three Mexican sisters who were all abused by Raniere, one of whom was kept confined to a room for years. It's difficult reading, consolation being the
knowledge that Raniere is rotting in prison and that his crimes finally caught up with him. Watching The Secret Garden (dir. Marc Munden) - Spoilers, if one needs a spoiler warning for a 110 year old novel. One of those stories that is adapted every generation, and generally I have no problem with this, since new adaptations can often bring something new or be a different take on old material (see Little Women 2019). But a part of me can’t help feel why bother with this when the perfect 1993 version exists. There is an Attempt at something new with this film, moving the setting forward to 1947 (Mary’s parents having died during the Partition), and turning the garden from a small walled secret to a mystical, huge wonderland full of ferns and flowers and endless sun. But in doing so, the central metaphor is lost - rather than Mary discovering something abandoned and run wild, gently bringing it back to life with love and care, she merely discovers a magical place that requires no effort on her part. There’s also less of a character arc for Mary, remaining unpleasant far into the proceedings, forcing Colin to visit the garden instead of it being his true wish, and generally succeeding by imposing her will on everyone else. In many ways she’s more like Burnett's other child heroine Sarah Crewe - the film opens I’m with her telling stories to her doll including Ramayana, which is eerily reminiscent of Alfonso Cuaron's (also perfect) 1995 adaptation of A Little Princess. But I suppose a sliver of credit where it's due - Julie Walters' Mrs Medlock is less of an antagonist, with Colin Firth's Lord Craven being Mary's primary obstacle. There's also a subplot with Mary's mother's depression following the death of her sister being the reason for her neglect (and Merlin alum Rupert Young shows up briefly as Mary's father) but like shifting the time period, there just doesn't seem to be a point to it. The climax of the film involves the Manor burning down (writer Jack Thorne stealing from Rebecca too, lol), with Mary and Craven have a very calm conversation as fire and smoke surrounds them. It’s all very bizarre, but also…rather dull? Don't bother with this, just watch the 1993 film again. Showbiz Kids (dir. Alex Winter) - a really interesting documentary on the titular subject - Winter was himself a child actor on Broadway before his film career kicked off in The Lost Boys and Bill and Ted, and has been able to assemble a broad range of interview subjects - Mara Wilson, Evan Rachel Wood, Wil Wheaton, Jada Pinkett Smith among others - former child actors, those still in the business, and some up and comers like Disney star Cameron Boyce (who I was sad to see in the coda has passed away). We also follow two young hopefuls - Marc, attending acting classes and auditioning in pilot season, yet to book a job but his parents are invested in "his" dream, and Demi, already established on Broadway but having to start to make choices between a career and a childhood. There's no voiceover, no expert opinions in this, letting the actors speak for themselves, but there is a telling juxtaposition of Marc returning home, jobless but having fun in the pool with his friends, while Demi has to cancel the summer camp she had been so looking forward to because she has booked a new role. The film is fairly even handed, but ultimately I took away that there just seems to be more harm than not in this industry, and abuses of many kinds. It does make you wonder about the ethics of child acting, at least in the current system where the cautionary tales are plentiful. Masters of the Universe: Revelation (episodes 1-5) - Mild spoilers I guess? I was never really into He-Man as a kid, other than the Secret of the Sword movie, so most of the in jokes and references in this went over my head. I have to admit, it was actually seeing all the outrage that made me want to check this out and see what all the complaining was about. I actually…really enjoyed it?!? I’m sympathetic to the complaints of a bait and switch (creators really need to learn to say
“just wait and see”), but other than that in my view the rest seemed completely unfounded. Adam/He-Man being killed in the first episode and the impact that has on Eternia and those left behind is actually a really interesting premise. This isn’t a TLJ situation; in contrast everyone (except Evil-Lyn) is always going on about how much they miss Adam, and the whole point of the first arc is him coming back. There’s also a nice little detail of Adam in Preternia (heroes heaven) choosing to remain as he is rather than as He-Man where all his predecessors have chosen their “ultimate” forms. I love him and his Magical Girl transformation. As for Teela - female characters can’t win, it seems. If they are perfect, they’re Mary Sues, if they have flaws, they’re unlikeable. Teela is Going Through things and is on a journey, but I often feel (and it seems the case here) that people confuse a character arc with author intent. No! Just because a character says/does something it doesn't mean you're supposed to agree with them! Some of Teela's actions may be petty and her demeanor less than sweet, but people make bad choices as a response to grief, and I actually thought her anger over Adam never telling her his secret and how that manifested was a pretty interesting take. I'll be interested to see the next half of the season, and ignore the ragebait youtube commentary. One more thing - Evil-Lyn (perfectly voiced by Lena Headey) was an absolute delight. Lucifer (season 5 part 2): They’ve basically given up on the procedural side of things by now and are leaning heavily into the mythology, which works for me since the case of the week is always the least interesting part of any show. It also struck me this season that there’s gender parity in the main cast (Lucifer, Amenadiel, Dan and then Chloe, Maze, Ella, Linda) - and actually, that’s more women than men. How often does that happen?!? I can’t say I’m particularly engaged with the Lucifer/Chloe pairing, but am happy to go along with it since that’s where the whole plot revolves. The best scenes for me this season were with God’s Dysfunctional Family, even if the lead up to the finale felt rushed (I understand the need to wrap things up in case of cancellation but still). I would have liked to see more of the sibling dynamics between the angels and less romantic drama, but hey. The character death got me, as well. I didn't see it coming and I didn't realise how much I had enjoyed that character until they were gone and well...it got me. I see the last season is coming soon, I'm not exactly sure where they can go from here, but looking forward to it nonetheless. Writing I was actually quite sick this month with a throat infection, so wasn't in the best frame of mind to get anything finished like I had planned to. I'm going to hold off posting the word count this month and roll it over to September when hopefully I've actually posted things.

Ayama POV
Today is the day we finally get our hero costume! I was talking with Mina as she gave me everyone phone numbers so I got to know everyone a bit better before class started. We all went to our seat as the clock hit 8:23. Home room went by fast.
We have Uncle Mic for English which is the most easiest thing ever. Although everyone was really bored during this time. I almost fell asleep until I heard he speak.
"Which of these four sentences contains a mistake?" My uncle asked the class. I can tell that Jirō, Ashido, and Kamninari faces read 'so boring.' I really can't blame them.
"This really sucks." Katsuki said. My Uncle Mic caught on to that and started to panic. " Hey everybody, look alive! Grammar rules!" He shouted. I just looking the way towards Bakugou who was only two seats away from me.
God why do I have this feeling. I saw him look back and I then pretend I was just focus on the lesson. "Nerd." I heard him say. I only quitely giggled. Momo had answered the questions. After a few classes it was lunch.
The lunch room was huge. I saw Izuku, Ochaoco, and Tenya. So, I decided I would go sit with them. The food was really great. And a cheap price. So there was nothing to complain about when it came to food.
"White rice is the perfect comfort food, isn't it?" A chef robot asked us. "Yes of course." I said with a close eye smile and my hands above my chest. Although I like yellow rice more... Ochaoco nodded while Izuku was whimpered and Tenya seems surprised.
Lunch had ended and we all went back to our class. I was talking with Momo on the way there turn out she was sitting with Jirō so if I want. I can sit with them next time. Now since it's the afternoon It's was time for Hero Basic Training!
We we're all seated waiting and wondering who our next teacher would be. "I am here!" Oh God. "Coming through the door like a hero!" Uncle All Might spoke. I was cringing at his intro and the way he came through the door.
All the students were gasping. Even Izuku. I mean he has looked up to All Might all his life. I guess it's can't be helped. "I can't believe it's really All Might" Denki said, surprised. "So he is a teacher! This year's going to be totally awesome!" Eijior spoke up.
Well they did say he was going to be apart of the staff this year. "This year has gotten a whole lot interesting." I said. "Hey look. Is he wearing his Sliver Age costume?"
Tsu pointed out while my uncle was making huge step towards the front of the classroom. "I'm getting goosebumps. It's so retro!" Ojiro said.
"Welcome to the most important class at U.A High. Think of it has Hero-ing 101." He got the first sentence right. "Here you will learn the basics of being a pro. And what it means to fight in the name of good!" My Uncle said bravely.
"Let's get into it! Today's lesson will pull no punches!" He shouted. I was so excited my eyes widened. "Fight training." Katsuki said,by his voice I could tell he was happy. While Midoriya.... "Real combat?"Izuku sounded unsure.
"But the one of the keys of being a good hero is... Looking good!" He pointed towards some empty slots as they came out. "These were design for you based on your Quirk registration forms and the requests you sent in before school started." He said. The whole class was excited.
"Get yourself suited up and then meet me at Training Ground Beta!"He shouted "Oh and Miss Ayama." He said. I look his direction. And the whole class had eyes on me.
"Someone from the staff add something with your outfit. They'd said it'll help with your voice." He said. I nodded knowing it was my dad. "Let's get moving Heros!" He shouted.
He shouted. After getting our new hero outfit on. I took a look at the new piece of jewelry. It's a sliver choker with wavy designs and in middle of it was the shape of a crescent moon.
All the girls were complimenting each other. So when I showed them my outfit they were amazed. "The outfit looks really on you, Ayama." [Mina]
"Aw thanks, Mina" [Ayama]
Tumblr media
We were all just waking through a tunnel. So I don't get it. Oh well. "Hey Ayama can you make a beat when were walking towards the outside?" Denki ask. "Oh that's would cool." Eijior said. "Sure." I said. I then thought a beat them played it. (Same in the episode.) "Nice." Hanta said.
"They say that clothes make the pros, young ladies and gentlemen, and behold, you are the proof! Take this to heart. From now on you're all... Heroes in training!" He shouted.
As we all step out into the light. " This is getting me all revved up. You look so cool!" He said excited. " Now. Shall we  get started you buncha newbies?" He shouted. Wait a minute. Where Izuku?
"Hey Deku!" I heard Ochaoco said. I was standing right next to her. "Nice costume Deku!" I said. "Thanks your guys costume look nice as well." He said going fully pink. "Yeah, but Ochaoco is really cool." I said. "Your amazing Ayama." She said.
"I love this school." Mineta said. "Yeah it's pretty cool." I said. "Yeah, but I like this school for other reasons." He said in a seductive tone. 'Let me not even say anything.'
She said as she has me now standing near her. I hear Uncle All Might small growl for a moment. That when I realized something. His costume and Izuku. Izuku making something things a bit too obvious.
"Now that your ready, it's time for combat training." Uncle All Might said. "Sir." Iida said. He basically had a question about if we're doing the same thing with the exam. Which we're not.
"Run-ins with the most dastardly evildoers take place indoors. Think about it. Backroom, deals, home invasions, secret underground lairs. Truly intelligent criminals stay hidden in the shadows." He explained.
"For this training exercise you'll be split into teams of good guys and bad guys and fight two on two-one-two battles." Uncle All Might said.
"But Sir, their 21 of us." Ashido said. He really does have trouble teaching kids. "Let's see. I'll have One team in group of three!" He said. Students then start asking more questions.
"Ugh. I wasn't finished talking!" He pulls out a small book. "The villains have hidden a nuclear missile somewhere in their hideout. The hero must try to foil their plans." He said.
"To do that the good guys either have to catch the evildoers or recover the weapon. Likewise  the bad guys succeed if they protect their payload or capture the Heros." He explained.
"Time's limited, and we'll choose teams drawing lots!" He shouted. "Isn't there a better way away?" Iida interrupted. "Think about it! Pros often have to team up with heroes from other agencies on the spot, so maybe that's the reason we're seeing that here." Izuku explain to him.
"Yes, I see. Life is a random series of events. Excuse my Rudeness." Iida said. "No sweat. Let's Draw!" My uncle shouted.

Those are the groups we're in. "Who would've thought I'd be the lucky one with two girls!" I heard Mineta said. "Huh? Why is that?" I asked. "Because-" But Momo smack him in the head. "Nothing pure I can tell you that." She said leaving Mineta with a big bump.
"I declare that the first teams to fight will be... These guys!" He said while throw the ball in the air and caught them. The balls read A and D. Man I was actually looking forward to fighting with Katsuki. He looks really good in that outfit same with Momo.
I think he felt my eyes on him, because he look my was and I quickly turned away and blush. "Team A will be the Heros and team D will be the villains." My Uncle shouted. I look towards Bakugo he had this please smile on his face like evil fun.
"Everyone else can head to the monitoring room to watch!" He shouted. "Yes, sir." I made eye contact with Izuku and Bakugo. ' Give it your all, but don't end killing each other.' look. I saw Bakugo just look away while I gave Izuku a pat on the shoulder.
As walking away I notice the stares Bakugo gave him. But Izuku fights back the stare back looking back at him shocking Bakugo making him even more fierce."Come on Ayame!" Ashido called out. "Oh coming!" As I run towards them.
I felt a energy coming from somewhere. It was negative one. But I ignore it while walking with the other to the monitoring room. Don't kill him.
"I wonder how this will play out." Eijior said. "Hopefully okay." I said. "Speaking of okay. Is THAT okay?" I heard Eijior asked pointing down at my thigh. "Huh?" I look down only to see Mineta holding onto my thigh.
"Ehh?!?" I shouted. "I bet your thighs are so  warm. I can already tell there very big & thick." My face is really heated when he said that. His face was so...
"You pervert!" Ashido shouted while Momo hit him in the head. "Oww!" He cried. "Next time, don't grab on my thigh. Thanks." I said. "I was mostly talking about how he got Ayama all to his self, but yeah...." Eijior mutter.
My uncle All Might came in as we all put our straight faces on. As he went towards the screens. "All right! Let's being the indoor combat training! Team A and Team D, your time starts now!" He shouted through the mic.
"Pay attention, kids. Think about what you would do." My uncle said. I know it's going to be hard Midoriya, but you gotta get through this! If anything happens me or my uncle will stop it.
We watch how the enter the building through a window. As they were walking down the hallways and about to turn a corner. Bakugo came out of nowhere and I could see the hatred in his eyes. As he made a full on blow towards Midoriya.
Thankfully he missed them as they both went on the floor. But Midoriya quickly stood up. "He almost got the jump on them." Mineta said. "Sneak attack, Bakugo? What kind of man pulls cheap crap like that?" Eijior questioned.
"It's a viable strategy. He's playing the part. Acting like a true Villain would." My uncle said. But that not the reason. "No it's because Bakugo is filled up with so much pride in himself." I whisper. "It's didn't work Midoriya doge him!" Mina pointed out.
"Looks, there he goes!" Denki said. Bakugo was charging towards Midoriya. But Midoriya stop him by holding one his gauntlet. He then flipped him to the ground. Alright! "Deku is a name of a hero!" He shouted, but mouth it is what it look towards us.
"Hey who is he talking to? I'm not hearing anything. Can we get any sound with this video?" Eijior asked talking about Bakugou. "He got a radio in his ear so he can talk to his partner. I gave it to him before the match started. Along with the map of the building. Also this a roll of capture tape!" My uncle explained.
"Wrapping this around your opponent means you've apprehended them, and their out for the rest of the game." He explained. "So, there's a 15-minute time limit, and the good guys have idea what floor I nuclear weapon is hidden on, right?" Ashido asked. "Correct!" My Uncle shouted.
"And the Heros are clearly at a disadvantage here. A big one!" Ashido said. "Well think about it. That's usually how villains are." I said. To which my uncle nods. "That's life. Even when the odds aren't in our favor, we fight!" He said.
"All together!" He shouted of course. " Let's hear a Plus Ultra!" We shouted as one. "Monsieur. He's on the move." Yuga said which quickly caught all of our attention.
Izuku seem to be telling Ochaoco to run away. Deku was doing okay with holding Kaachan off for awhile.  While students were giving him compliments. "Who do you think will win?" I ask Momo. "Hmm. It's still a bit to early to tell." She said. Katsuki was ready to use his next move, but Izuku ran away.
"That guy has some real angry issues." Denki said. "Facts." I said. But it's mostly because of his pride which is too high and it's needs to be knock down.
I watch as Bakugo knocked down walls of the building. His pride has really turn him into something else. I could only think back when we were little kids. We were by the beach skipping pebbles.
Katsuki being the jerk he is and his other friends. Tease Deku about his pebble drowning so fast. I found it ridiculous.
I guess he had a soft spot for me back then. I don't know about now. I snapped back to reality. I look up on screen seeing that Bakugo had used one of his gauntlet on Midoriya. I can tell that Bakugo is angry. And I know he not trying to kill Midoriya but this is too far.
"Ayama run to the building to help Midoriya and Ochaoco!" My uncle shouted. "You'll still be on team C, but just Go!" He said.
"Ayama be careful!" Momo spoke. "Don't worry. I'll be fine." I said before running towards to the floor Midoriya and Ochaoco had first enter.
I quickly followed the loud noise. I hummed making butterflies appear and followed them. I finally made it towards them. I heard my uncle tell Bakugo if he use his gauntlet again he his team will lose.
I saw Bakugo think about his decision. As Midoriya notice me, but I made the sign to speak. My hoodie fell off as I started to use my Quirk. My hair floated up while getting longer  as I felt my eyes glow red.
My scarf was lifting up as well. I saw Midoriya talking to Ochaoco through his ear set. "Fine! We'll fight hand to hand combat!" He shouted While run towards him. I quickly sent my scarf pieces to capture Bakugo.
"Hn! Mr.Aizawa!" Bakugo grunted knowing he couldn't escape my scarf. I was holding it. "Wrong one." I said.
"What the hell are you doing here!" He shouted at me. "I get it you're upset, because he has a Quirk. That's doesn't mean you should try to almost kill him!" I told him. I felt him stop struggling. I think he finally got the memo. I let go of him.
He then run up to Izuku. And Izuku saw it coming. He was ready. But Bakugo had another plan in mind. Once he did his move he was going to to right hook him. I quickly jump and landed in front of Izuku and move him out of the way and doge Bakugo's attack.
I quickly jump above him. Then using one of my knee, I quickly bend it into Bakugo back. While grabbing his gauntlet and jabbing it into his back. "Ack!". He shouted. I got off of him.
He got up. He look angry at me. "MOVE OUT OF THE WAY, IDIOT!" He yelled at me. I active my Quirk making my eyes glow red. Using his Quirk I sent an explosion his way.
Which he blocked with his gauntlet. He surprised me when it look like he was coming for me, but I remember that Deku was behind me.
He push me out the way. I saw him right hook Izuku by using the metal part of his gauntlet. I saw Izuku use his all for one Quirk. But I black out.
"Luna." That voice... Sounds so familiar, but why can't I remember? I snapped out of thought. "Ayama?" I looked up to see My Uncle Might looking concerned.
I then looked everywhere. I saw Deku getting dragged away by the medical robot. And Katsuki just standing looking at his gloves.
"Are you alright?" My uncle asked me. "Yeah I'm fine." I said slowly getting up. "Alright then. Head back to where they others are. I'm going to have a word with Bakugou." He's told me. I nodded and started to walk back.
"Luna." My vision became a bit blurry. I felt a liquid coming come out of my ears. I touch one of my ears. I bring my hand in front of me. It kinda look fuzzy, because of my vision. But I know it's blood. Next thing I hear is something  or someone drop.
"Ayama!"
Tumblr media
I slowly open up my eyes only to find myself in the nurses office. I see Midoriya leave as my Dad walk in. "Oh, so you're awake." My Dad said. "Yeah..." I said. I saw him look worried a bit, which was weird. But Nana look even more worried.
"I heard a voice-" "Did your ears bleed?" He asked me and I nodded. "Shit.." he said. "Is something wrong?" I ask him. This time I was raising an eyebrow at him. "Nothing that you should be worried about. You'll be riding home with me today. No choice." He said in a strict manner then left. I just groaned.
"You know he just looking out for you." Recovery girl said. "I know Nana, it's just... I feel like he won't tell me anything." I said. She just sighed as walking over to me giving me a kiss draining me.
"I'm sure he has a good reason for it. Now hurry and go to the staff room." She said. "Okay see you later Nana." I said before leaving.
I made my way back to the classroom. I open the door only for my feet decide to not work. Resulting to me falling.
"Ayama!" Some students said in shock. "Ow." I said. Momo and Ochaoco came to help me out. "Be careful." Momo said as I got my balance back. "Thanks." I said nicely. I chatted with them a bit before going to the bathroom to change then putting my hero costume back.
I asked them if they seen Bakugo they told me he left, but Midoriya went to talk for him. I thank them quickly than ran. I bump into someone. "Oh sorry-"
"Why are you in such a rush darling?" Kiyoshi asked me. "Not today I'm really not in the mood for your mind games." I said. 'Oh but I am." He said while licking his lips.
"I told you this before and I'll say again. Not interested." I simply said. "But I am." He grab my wrist. "If you don't get your hands off of me. There's finna be a problem. I'm not the shy little girl you saw in middle school." I told him.
"You mean the one who nobody like? Other than me?" He said. "You mean the one who almost got rape by you in the bathroom. Then yes."I said it and I could care less how he reacts.
"Will you shut up about that." He said rolling his eyes. "You have a girlfriend and side chicks. Go mess with her or with them." I said getting out of his grip.

(I really only like this part of the song)
“You can gon' 'head puff up your chest, but it bet not go no further.”  I walked away from him. I might put on a brave face but I was honestly scared.
I walked towards my dad's personal office and just sat there doing homework assignments while he did work. After about 15 minutes. We left the school.
"Dad?"
"Hm?"
"Can I go near that cherry blossoms tree that you and mom used to sit at?" I asked. "You want to go outside after what happened? Hahaha. You're funny." He deadpanned.
"Dad it's only like a five to ten minute walk to get there. I'll be fine." I said. "No. And that's final." I just set head on the dashboard.
My eyes go wide as a gasp left my mouth.

"Shōta?"
'Hm."
"If I were to disappear one day. What would you do?"
"Kesshō..."
*A few moments of silence*
"Well?"
"Do what any other hero in Japan would do."
"That's what any other hero would do. I didn't ask what any other heroes would do. I ask what would Shōta do."
"The moment you're gone. I wouldn't know how to function or cope with myself, Kesshō. I would try to find you myself. No matter how long it takes. Even if it does take years."
"Why?"
"Because I love you."

What did I just witnessed?! I couldn't see anything faces. But black silhouettes of my parents, when they were younger.
Strange. I never had something like that happens before. "What is it?" I heard my Dad asked. "Just remembered that the nintendo switch you ordered for me comes today." Which wasn't a lie.
"And I need to walk the-"
"No."
"Well at least I tried."
Tumblr media
I got out the car and grabbed my backpack. I closed the door and see my Dad already on the porch holding a box in his hand.
"Well?" I asked. "Ayama's." I quickly rushed up and hugged my Dad. "Thanks Dad!" I heard him chuckle. He patted my back.
I stop hugging him and got the box from him. My pupils change into stars. "Wait til you get inside the house." I heard my dad said. "Uh huh."
When he opened the door. I walked inside casually and took off my shoes. And once I reach the upper step. I bolted my butt upstairs and straight to my room.
"Hi Leo! Hi Nebula!"
I close my door and put the box on my bed. "I guess I should get changed first." I walk towards my dresser and pulled out a lightblue shirt with a butterfly on it. And black jeans.
I got undress and put the other clothes on. I went back to my bed and pick up the box and walked towards my desk.
Open my drawer. And got out my box cutter. The thing had tape on it. And I didn't want to use my nails that I did a few week ago. Nothing too long or crazy. Simple short white matte nails.
I opened the box and I was amazed by the design of it. “Lavender lunar sky. Nice. Now to test it out!"

My Take on the First 3 Episodes
Let’s talk about Fugou Keiji for a second because I’ve been dying to talk about it.
After waiting practically 5 months, the long-awaited third episode finally aired. I remember back when Fugou Keiji was first announced the hype over Daisuke took over the internet. Good looking? Check. Rich? Check. Parted black hair? Check. Nonchalant? Sign me up. I also gave into the hype; heck, who wouldn’t? He’s practically the whole package; my dream man so to speak. The Jumin Han of another dimension.
Disclaimer: This discusses the only 3 episodes out at the moment and as new episodes come out I’ll most likely just create new posts so everything here isn’t really definite so to speak? My theories and beliefs are just based on the first 3 episodes so they may not be the most accurate thing out there.
Disclaimer #2: This is me just rambling on so things may not be in the best order so please bear with me (it’s mainly just my thoughts on how our 2 main characters have developed so far and any theories that I have)
Once the first episode aired, I was absolutely hooked on both the synopsis and the characters. Two detectives working together despite having completely different beliefs? Imagine the drama that would unfold!
Haru Kato, our main detective, would put his life on the line in the name of justice, taking extreme measures to uphold his humanistic values. The first episode heavily emphasized this idea. He insisted he take part in the entire bomber mission even though he wasn’t apart of the First Division. Ranks mean nothing in the face of human lives. Once he and Daisuke, the richer half of the duo, closed in on the van bearing the bomb, without any hesitation he jumped onto the van only to warn the driver inside, who happened to be a thief. This seemingly innocent civilian’s life was in danger: they had no right to die from a terrorist attack. He knew well of the dangers as there was only a minute left until the bomb detonated, yet his morals took over. If nobody is going to save her, he must do it. Would he have still done this if he knew that the driver was a thief? We can’t be so sure yet.
Even in episode two Haru’s traditional values prevail as he continued to pursue Isezaki, the smuggler in question, despite being exhausted and practically lifeless. The first two episodes really painted Haru as this character who is willing to go to the extreme and literally kill himself for the sake of others. His work method basically revolves around these old-school techniques.
Kanbe Daisuke lies on the opposite side of the spectrum though. He is far more materialistic and uses his wealth to buy his way through every situation. In need of a car? Just buy it from the prince of the Abura Emirates. A tower is affiliated with a smuggler? Just buy the tower and do whatever you must. He marches to the beat of his own drum, refusing to cooperate with Haru and even ignores his complaints. Haru is very clearly repulsed by Daisuke’s ways as he views it as though he’s cheating at life. Using money instead of working hard? Pathetic. Daisuke, on the other hand, just doesn’t seem to understand Haru’s views. Why go through all that trouble when you could easily solve it through a few million bucks? He doesn’t necessarily value human lives in the same way that Haru does either. As seen in the first episode, he almost ran over a mother and her son if Haru hadn’t intervened. But Daisuke’s character is far more complex in my opinion.
This is where my theories come into play. I suspect that something happened in Daisuke’s past that caused him to lose trust in others or even respect for other humans if we could go to that extreme. The series began with Daisuke playing the piano while saying:
“I had a father, and I had a mother. I believe I had a happy childhood. However, ever since a certain day, everything had changed.”
This led me to believe that maybe possibly his parents died from a tragic murder or anything that would cause him to lose sympathy or care for others. Or any type of sad backstory for that matter. Maybe this is why someone of his rank and wealth even decided to join the police/detective force in the first place rather than selfishly indulge in his wealth.
Anywho, the first episode really helped build my theory. This is especially notable at the end as Daisuke is driving the prince’s car up the bascule bridge to push the cleaning van with the bomb. He smirks that devilish smile that we all swooned over the first time we saw it as the van crept closer to the edge of the bridge. Once Haru jumps out of the car to save the “civilian” inside, Daisuke’s facial expression changes to a much more soft, almost confused expression. A few minutes later when Haru is hanging off of the bridge, Daisuke watches Haru helplessly hang. He’s the one who decided to help the civilian, now he’s suffering the consequences. Why help him?
Episodes 1 and 2 really helped to establish the contrasting personalities and mindsets between Haru and Daisuke, which I really enjoyed. The fact that our two main characters are as different as night and day made the show much more comedic, which I absolutely enjoyed! The subtlety in the expressions too: stunning. *chef’s kiss*
The third episode elaborated on their personalities and really added a sort of “depth” to them. Oh boy was this episode chaotic and full of new information. This is the episode where we see their first step towards true partnership, Haru’s backstory, and even met grammy Kanbe. Let’s dive into it.
The episode started off with Daisuke, Haru, and Suzue visiting the Kikuko, or Daisuke’s grandmother. As of right now, it’s still unclear whether Suzue is Daisuke’s fiancé or sister, but either way she was in no way the focus of the episode. Daisuke seems much more submissive towards his grandmother, a side of him we’ve yet to see. This is even prominent in the opening song as Daisuke is seen smirking alongside the other members of the Modern Crime Prevention Task Force (MCPTF) yet he has a much more neutral face around his grandmother. Is it out of respect? Quite possibly. He is much more composed (even though he always has been) and compliant, furthering my case. Back to my theory, maybe his grandma raised him after his parents died and that’s where his respect grew from. The possibility is always there.
It’s also noticeable that Daisuke seems much more irritated towards Haru as in practically any screenshot from these first few scenes you could feel the pique radiate from him. Daisuke even gave Haru the stink eye a few times before Haru ratted him out to his grandmother (harsh). Whatever happened in Hong Kong must’ve been brutal, but it really helped throw a curveball in their relationship.
After that bop of an opening, it’s revealed that Haru is sitting next to a student facing lots of difficulties early on ranging from his sister’s bad health to failing his college entrance exam. Haru very clearly sympathizes with this kid as he also failed his first college entrance exam, and heck who wouldn’t feel bad for a kid going through this much stress? Imagine the absolute grief Haru felt when he found out that it’s that same kid who held a woman at gunpoint later on. When calling Kamei later on, Haru shouted:
“No! Don’t tell him. Absolutely not.”
Considering his relationship with his fellow peers, we can safely assume that he’s referring to Daisuke. At this point, we know that Haru doesn’t trust Daisuke at all. Like not even a sliver. That rich boy help him? No sir. No thank you.
This scene also unveiled the tension between Haru and the First Division. Haru and Hoshino are clearly not on good terms as they speak formally to one another, almost as though they weren’t partners a few years back. A flashback plays soon after and its revealed that all went downhill when Haru misfired and ended up wounding one burglar and killing one innocent civilian (who held a gun at Haru most likely out of fear; I mean, who wouldn’t be scared in such a situation). This ultimately led to his demotion to the Third Division. Lots of drama. Lots of tears. This backstory revealed exactly why Haru is unable to shoot anymore: his past trauma is to blame.
Haru still clearly cares for Hoshino though. When he and Daisuke listened in to the First Division’s call line, Haru practically prayed that the perp wouldn’t get shot, for both the sake of morals and for his friend. His “friend” is mentally incapable of shooting anyone and the perp just “isn’t a bad guy.” Haru is revealed to be an even greater advocate of morality and humanism than we previously thought. Even though this college student was hosting a stand-off, Haru refused to believe that he was any less human and hoped to find a way to prevent him from approaching death’s doorstep. So, to answer the question from earlier: yes, Haru would still save the thief if he was aware of it. He values human lives to the point that the First Division had the audacity to say that he “has no right to be a police officer.”
Daisuke listened closely to Haru’s wishes and worked to make them come true. He worked to find a way to bring the perp down without any bloodshed and practically did anything to conform to Haru’s wishes, ranging from allowing him to use HEUSC to setting off smoke rockets to prevent the perp from getting shot by the police. When the First Division chief insists that Haru shoot the perp, Haru is clearly hesitant. What if things go wrong again? No, why should he shoot him when he wants him to live? Should he just throw away his morals in the midst of panic? Haru is shown to try to reason with the perp and just couldn’t bring himself to shoot him. Maybe there will be some development in the future? Who knows.
Daisuke later on bribes the perp by stressing he’ll pay for his sister’s surgery in order to resolve the actual reason he decided to host the stand-off in the first place. Daisuke obviously did it for the mission and maybe he didn’t feel remorse whatsoever (heck who can tell what Daisuke is thinking) but I have a feeling that as the series progresses Daisuke will start to do these acts of kindness not only for the case but also out of authenticity. The perp seems intimidated (possibly by Daisuke’s lifeless expressions) and gives in and the day is saved! The third episode formally wraps up with another unforgettable bop.
The takeaway from the entire episode is that Daisuke started cooperating with Haru and even allowed him to use HEUSC. Was this because he had a change in mindset? Or was he just following his grandmother’s wishes? Personally, I believe it’s both but leaning towards the latter. Daisuke, as mentioned before, has a different kind of respect for his grandmother and would submit to her wishes. Since she said “don’t trouble your coworkers,” he decided to work with Haru rather than just alongside him. She also insisted that Haru help coach Daisuke, so once again, he’s following her orders. However, I do believe that Daisuke is rather curious about Haru’s lifestyle. They are quite different as a matter of fact. He wanted to understand how Haru could easily put his life on the line for other people and maybe even wanted to change himself. That’s unlikely considering it’s only the third episode, but that possibility is still there.
But I strongly believe that Daisuke had a change in mindset, even if it may be small. He jeopardized his life and walked towards the perpetrator only because he trusted Haru’s words: “He isn’t the type of guy to kill.” Maybe Daisuke did this only to follow his grandmother’s wishes. Maybe he did this out of sheer trust. Maybe he did this to try to better his relationship with Haru (the chances are, yet again, a bit low). Nonetheless, he still put his life at risk and this was one small step in their partnership (and one giant leap for fangirl-kind). That’s not to say that their relationship isn’t still iffy. Whenever Haru starts to speak in the car, Daisuke just puts the pedal to the metal and drives off into the distance.
Personally, I enjoyed this shift in character in Daisuke in the third episode. I've seen many comments regarding how it's sudden that his character changed, but I felt as though it made sense (as explained above). I see where they're coming from as we were robbed from the Hong Kong trip, and it’s evident that something happened in Hong Kong that caused a shift in their characters; however, I felt as though the third episode put emphasis on the fact that Daisuke is changing whether it be by his free will or his grandmother’s, or both.
In conclusion: I cry over pretty boys so much to the point that I wrote an entire review on them.
EDIT: So it’s been confirmed that we’re going to learn about what happened in Hong Kong in a drama CD. All I can say is yes

Hi. Can I ask about Sabolu/ AceLu #40
Thanks so much for sending this in! Sorry it took a while, my response is LONG ^ ^;;;
40. Describe their first time (if any).
Oooh boy, here goes
AceLu + SaboLu, in that order.
This ended up being LONG, so this is just Part 1, Ace & Luffy -> AceLu version. I’ll make a second post with SaboLu! *SWEATS*
Mostly lead up on Learning about the Existence of Sex, as well as slight non-graphic mention of sex with the younger party age 17 at the end.
~~
Contrary to gossip among Ace’s more raunchy crew mates, there was nothing sexual going on between him and Luffy prior to Ace leaving the island. There weren’t really even any pre-pubescent growing-up episodes, or weird questions.
The reason being, neither of them had any clue what “sex” was.
Clueless Luffy aside, one might assume that Ace at least would have known. He certainly looks and acts like he does, and Luffy certainly assumed Ace Knew Things.
And of course Ace acted like he Knew Things! He’s the Big Brother after all, and he has his pride, and when tiny dumb lil Luffy stared up with his sparkly eyes, all admiration and expectation, of course Ace had to have an Answer.
And before, Sabo was there, laughing quietly when Ace turned to him in wide-eyed panic while Luffy was facing the other way. And Sabo would explain, simplified but not mocking of his brother’s ignorance, and Ace would turn around and boast about his knowledge to Luffy while Sabo snickered in the background.
So, when one day, Luffy sees a pair of frogs on top of each other, he turns his ever inquisitive eyes on Ace, and asks, “Ace, what’re they doing?”
And Ace turns to ask Sabo, and…
Sabo’s not there.
Hiding the stab of pain (which would turn into a full three hour bawling session if Luffy noticed), Ace thinks. What would Sabo say? What’s the Smart Right Answer?
“Luffy,” Ace says. “Look, the frogs started the pile for you. They’re asking to be stacked. So we should find more frogs to stack!”
Luffy accepts the explanation with glee, especially since it comes with a quest! And so the brothers spend the next hour finding additional frogs to stack on top of the first pair Luffy found, who croak indignantly at having their activity interrupted.
It continues like this, and seven years is a long time for two boys with little to no guidance to find misunderstandings to pile together, much like they piled together random animals they found in the middle of copulating (Look Ace! This morning, some boars wanted to be stacked! And look there, the bears want to be stacked too! The brothers certainly had no idea they were creating unwilling animal orgies).
When Changes began happening to their bodies, Ace makes up additional, well, Bullshit.
While Luffy accepts Ace’s words as the Real Grownup Truth, some part of Ace should have remembered that it was all stuff he’d made up in place of actual facts from Sabo. But as the years passed, he’d come to accept them as How They Are.
Their ignorance certainly isn’t just the boys’ fault. They live with bandits after all, and there’s certainly plenty of vulgar talk going around. But if any of the bandits try to explain in any greater detail when Ace starts showing mild interest, Dadan thwacks them, daring them to imagine facing Garp’s wrath when the marine discovers they’d corrupted his darling grandsons.
Makino and the Mayor come by and help with their education, but it’s mostly things like manners, how to read, and how to fix their ripped of clothes. Stuff like their Bodies is something they left to family.
But unfortunately Garp, of course, also avoids The Talk, because of all the many responsibilities he’d avoided in the raising of his grandsons, this is certainly one he’s especially keen to avoid. He gives Ace an incredibly vague explanation to “If you do the Do, make sure to wrap it!” before disappearing, leaving Ace to mutter to himself, “Wrap what?” An even more garbled and meaningless version is passed from Ace to Luffy.
Ace leaves the island at seventeen, confident and strong, and completely oblivious to much of what the world has in store.
Shortly after he leaves the island, Ace meets his first crew mate, one ex-med student who goes by “Masked Deuce.”
To Deuce, Ace looks like a fine roguish young man in his prime, his chosen Captain, and Deuce hates to admit it, but definitely popular with the ladies. At their first island together after escaping the deserted island where they met, Deuce is proven right when the ladies hanging around the brothels crowd out to wave and call at Ace. Deuce wonders darkly if they’re going to make a stop, but Ace just waves cheerfully back, and they continue on their way.
“They sure don’t look very sleepy for people who want to sleep so much!” Ace laughs, and Deuce thinks he’s one to talk. But they head back to their raft with supplies and without further incident. That’s when Deuce has his first Bad Feeling that something may be amiss.
A few years later, after they’ve joined Whitebeard’s crew, a drunken Deuce will screech that one day, he should get to bash Monkey D. Garp’s face in. Garp OWES it to him!!! After what Deuce went through, after realizing how freakin’ EMPTY and beyond neglected some parts of Ace’s education had been!!! The Whitebeards are lucky, because the Ace today exists because of Deuce’s suffering!!!
Because Deuce realizes quickly that when Ace heard that ladies want to “sleep with him,” he thought it was an offering to nap together. When Deuce asked with mounting horror whether Ace knows what sex even is, his Captain responded with the most blinding pure smile and enough confidence that Deuce almost believed him, “Naked wrestling!” When Ace saw animals copulating (and in one memorable case, a random human couple in the alleys), he took it upon himself to generously stack a third, and if possible a fourth creature on top.
Forget knowledge of the Act, Ace didn’t even know that some people, well, had Different Parts down there. And Deuce groaned and restrained himself from bashing his head against the mast, because why would he? According to Ace, he grew up 95% with mostly just himself and his precious lil bro Luffy. He knew a grand total of two women, Dadan and Makino. The former, the thought of whom naked made Ace pale, and the second, who only stopped by occasionally but certainly had no reason to uncover herself. Ace didn’t know what a textbook was, and squinted when Deuce desperately asked if he’d at least seen porn magazines.
Sure, some women have biggish chests, but so do fat people, and Ace’s chest isn’t so bad either if he says so himself. So of course Ace had no reason to assume anything else was different.
Deuce remembers the agonizing incident where he’d hired a few hookers to help educate Ace. The ladies had been cackling non stop, Ace had cheerfully announced, “Ah, I see, so they’re like Fishmen! Similar, but with a few different Mystery Parts.” And Deuce couldn’t even applaud Ace’s open-mindedness, because he was too busy wanting to dig a hole for himself to die in due to mortification, cursing how the subject of his embarrassment didn’t even share a sliver of his shame.
Ace slowly filled the gaping holes in his knowledge with help from his crew (mostly Deuce), taking his own ignorance in good stride and laughing brightly with each new discovery.
But the thing that concerned Deuce most, was every time Ace Learned Something New, he’d scratch his head and mutter, “Oh shit, that’s not what I told Luffy.”
Deuce is extremely concerned for one Monkey D. Luffy, and occasionally mutters a prayer for the unfortunate youth who had apparently obtained the vast majority of his worldly knowledge second hand through Ace.
But despite now having knowledge of sex, Ace still doesn’t particularly express any interest in trying it himself. He continues to just wave at the ladies and even men who want his attention, just as cheerfully as he had in the beginning.
When Deuce cautiously inquires why, Ace just shrugs. “You’re supposed to do it with someone you love, right?” And Deuce doesn’t really have the heart to tell him any different.
~~
Three years after Ace sets out for sea, Luffy follows.
The brothers’ reunion comes faster than expected, for which Ace’s grateful, because not only does he get to see his precious little brother again, he also has the chance to maybe correct some of the things he’d told Luffy growing up before Luffy spends too much time in the outside world.
And so when night comes in the desert in Alabasta, Ace takes Luffy aside and they go a ways away from the men’s tent where Luffy’s crew sleeps, far enough away that the fire Ace lights on his arms to keep them warm can’t be seen, and their voices are washed away among the dunes.
They’re catching up Ace wants to hear all about Luffy’s adventures, yes, but Ace also feels responsibility to clear up any misunderstandings he’d caused. And his crew had warned him, including his new Whitebeard family, that it might be dangerous to leave a little brother as adorable as Ace claimed in such complete ignorance.
Ace insists that Luffy is strong and can beat up almost anyone who wishes him harm, but their words still catch on something that makes Ace feel a weird twist of something in his gut. Would Luffy know what kind of intentions are behind a wandering hand, a lecherous sneer? Wouldn’t Luffy also assume sleeping just means napping? This is a new kind of potential danger, something that Luffy’s definitely not aware of, and the thought of it sneaking up on Luffy unawares makes something dark and ugly rear in Ace’s gut.
But a lot of Ace’s complicated doubts and fears are swept away by the desert winds when Luffy crawls into Ace’s lap and leans back against his chest. Luffy likes human contact, he always had, but Ace used to like to pretend he didn’t (they both knew otherwise), so Luffy usually wasn’t clingy unless he was feeling especially vulnerable.
Luffy’s thin, rubbery arms wrap tightly around Ace’s torso, and his grip is strong, but vibrating, somewhere between shaking and tension. The flames on Ace’s arms sputter out, and Ace carefully puts his own arms around Luffy, now more open with himself than he’d been three years ago, and accepting of how he craves this too, and had felt starved of Luffy’s affection during their time apart.
It can’t be more obvious how much Luffy had missed him, and Ace feels the same.
Luffy’d grown over three years, from a gangly child who still worried Ace, to a still gangly but strong young adult who’d already begun earning a name for himself as a pirate. His lanky body fits perfectly in Ace’s arms, because even though Luffy’d grown, Ace’d grown too, and Luffy still feels petite in contrast.
Ah, Ace thinks as he squeezes Luffy tightly, burying his face in his little brother’s neck and drowning in his familiar scent, allowing himself to openly display his affection in a way he’d only done a handful of times on the island. Luffy practically purrs, leaning back and nuzzling Ace’s cheek, practically begging for more attention.
Something stirs in Ace’s gut as Luffy’s lithe form squirms against his bare chest, pushing fruitlessly against Ace’s unbudging arms before deciding that it’d be easier to just contort himself so he’s sitting facing Ace. And then suddenly their eyes are meeting, and Luffy looks so happy, and Ace thinks oh.
Someone I love.
Ace leans in to press their lips together, and Luffy is curious but doesn’t hesitate to push back and attempt to imitate.
It never crosses Ace’s mind that this is something that he shouldn’t be doing with Luffy. They’re Brothers, yes, but the word can mean a lot of things. Ace is Brothers with all the Whitebeard pirates too, and they’re undeniably a family and their bond means the world to him. The brother he shares with his crew is a bond of shared admiration for their leader, a bond of family through how they all see Whitebeard as their chosen paternal figure. It’s about a shared goal, a shared experience, a shared choice.
But brother in that context is different from brother with Luffy and Sabo. With Luffy and Sabo, their brother means an unbreakable bond, of connection that is stronger than anything they were born with, something that overcomes Ace’s hatred for his blood father, Sabo’s disgust for his heritage, and Luffy’s own missing parents. It means a willing and deliberate promise of permanence, a steady and stable treasure that will continue glowing at their core no matter how they change and grow.
It means love, Ace thinks, and knows Luffy feels the same.
~~
“So Luffy, that thing the frogs were doing?”
“Yeah?”
“This is what they were doing.”
“Oh, okay! So they were feeling good.”
“…Yeah, they were feeling good.”
Ace leaves it at that.
~~
(and then the war happens. And their first becomes their last.)

*COUGHS* or DOES it?
ANYWAY, barely a “first,” but a long rambling rant, ty for reading

@butchdyke69 yo idk how to reply to shit so here we are.
ok, I will say I think it speaks to how poorly they’ve treated their protagonist that she does not only something she could’ve done in 1x01, but it’s also something she does do. Debbie says Ruth should live another way (get a family) in 1x01, Ruth says no. Debbie says Ruth should live another way in 3x10 (become a director), Ruth says no. That locker room and airport scene have so many parallels--Debbie says in both “Don’t you want to be happy?” (and live the life I’m leading), Ruth says no, both scenes contain hugs, etc
Like, I get the point is highlighting Ruth’s rut but it’s actually awful writing that they never let her grow and made their protagonist (who should be driving the story) so passive for three seasons. There are ways to treat people pleasers while allowing them to be active and grow. But, instead they took every opportunity and made it about letting other people grow instead and kept her static, submissive, and passive. This isn’t Paddington (a character who doesn't get a character arc because everyone else grows because of their interactions with Paddington since he is unflawed and teaches them how to lead better lives). Ruth is fucked up. As fucked up as Debbie. She deserved three seasons of growth.
(This got long so added read more.)
I will say her finally facing her reflection in 3x08, being so lost that she speaks to a psychic, avoiding/destroying real acting opportunities throughout season 3, destroying relationships left and right throughout season 3, etc does suggest they might finally give her an arc. In the past, she couldn’t grow because she told herself she wasn’t shiny like Debbie. But, now everyone around her is growing (Sheila, Justine, Melrose, etc) and that lie she’s always told herself is harder to believe. Overall, I think her choosing to go back to that life of constant auditions could finally lead her to grow. And, it could be a really great thing ultimately. It could finally lead her to fall apart and realize she needs to change on her own terms.
Do I completely trust them with Ruth? Nope. They’ve given me so many reasons not to. They made her sexual harassment about bolstering Sam and downing Debbie (the way the show juxtaposes those reactions is super gross and sends the average viewer to ignore Debbie’s internalized misogyny and just view Debbie as bad TM and Sam as good TM and just like that aw his misogyny is erased). Ruth also gets no pov on her own sexual harassment. What kind of show does that about this subject, let alone a show that’s run by women?! They had Ruth “I choose work” Wilder choose shitty men who manipulate her and ones that she clearly doesn’t want. They consistently treat Debbie like the protagonist. The arc of season 1 is so clearly because of Debbie’s choices rather than Ruth’s. Debbie is the one who drives the story (at least most of the time). Debbie gets one of the best arcs on television. And...Ruth is also there. So, I don’t trust they respect or value Ruth the way I do but I’m definitely way more hopeful after season 3 than I was after season 2.
To be clear though, I would’ve hated if Ruth chose to go with Debbie’s offer. That would’ve been a huge regression. Not only would she be submitting further to Debbie’s control and what Debbie wants for her but she’d also be giving up on her dreams just because Debbie says to rather than uncovering what she wants and growing on her own terms. And, Debbie doesn’t offer that just out of love. To be clear, she could’ve offered Ruth acting. She could’ve told Ruth she could direct and also act. She didn't need to be so cruel about Ruth’s dreams. In fact, she knows what Ruth will say to that offer. She says at the top of 3x10 to Tex that she could never tell Ruth to give up acting (roughly) and then she does that at the end of the episode. She does it for some kind reasons but also some very shitty ones. It’s not a good offer and Debbie doesn’t phrase it well either. I mean, also...Ruth is like 32, not 50. She can keep going on auditions all she wants. She’s not Debbie. Power doesn’t interest her, not in the same way. She loves performing, she loves fiction, she loves acting. She just needs to repair her relationship to those things. To the point where I think there could even be a satisfying ending with Ruth still auditioning (I don’t think they’ll go that route, I think it’d be a hard sell but just saying). As long as she heals her relationship to acting and other people more and she’s not turning to acting in such an unhealthy way. Oh also another thing I’d like for season 4--a new proposal from Debbie but less shitty. Debbie, feelings are scary I know but you can do better :(
So yeah anyway I think this choice she makes at the airport has the potential to make her realize that she’s not that person anymore, that she got used to having a voice and control on GLOW, and realizes she feels powerless when auditioning. And at first she’ll cling harder to auditioning but she’ll ultimately fall apart and this will force her to grow and discover a new relationship to fiction/other people/herself/acting. If they care about her. I will say there’s a sliver of hope given that season 3 did at least give us a bit of her growing awareness that the way she’s living is unhealthy. So yeah tbh I’m not mad about how that scene went down. I’ll just be mad if there’s no payoff and am mad that she didn’t get to drive her own story or grow for three seasons.

The Handmaid's Tale: Mayday (3x13)
Well, this was an undeniably intense and breathtaking finale. Let's talk about it.
Cons:
They should have just killed June. I really thought for a moment there that she was going to be killed off, and I was so excited. Not because June has been annoying me this season, although that's certainly true. I just thought - if they actually do this, if they actually kill off their protagonist, then the story opens up. There are so many other stories to tell, so many other things we could explore. June is a complex character, certainly, but the fact that she's still alive means that next season, they will probably find some way to set up a new status quo, and then June will... what? Keep trying to get kids out? Try to find Hannah? The one major obstacle this show has always had is that it might become stale, and I thought killing June off would have been a very refreshing way of avoiding just that.
At the same time, even without killing June off, there was a lot of savior imagery here. The other Handmaids and Marthas coming back to make that stand with June, so the kids could get out, was certainly an awesome moment, but there was this strange vibe to it, like they were coming back because of June. Because she inspired them. I've expressed my slight discomfort with this idea before. What makes June so special? Why is she the leader of this little rebellion? I always liked how in the books, she was just... a woman. One of many, forced to do what she had to in order to survive. The longer this show goes on, the more special and significant June needs to be come, to justify her role at the center of the story. I really don't know how I would fix this, but I am identifying it as something of a problem.
Pros:
But okay. Obviously this episode was pretty awesome, and I'm very pleased with it. The big thing is this: the plan worked. The kids escaped. This is so important. If the big rescue operation had failed, and we were back to more tragedy with no sign of hope, I would have been very frustrated. Last season ended with Nichole and Emily getting out. And now, one season later, we have more than 52 kids, along with some Marthas, making their escape from Gilead. It was an incredibly powerful moment. All of the treading water that's been going on this season became worth it, because finally the good guys won an important victory. Kids were rescued. Action was taken, and it paid off. This is the kind of catharsis that is so desperately needed in a show like this one.
Commander Lawrence is so fascinating to me. That scene of him reading to all of the kids was one of those complicated moments, equal parts heartwarming and uncomfortable. Because throughout it all, I can never once forget who this man is, and the way he helped to orchestrate the torment of so many innocent people. It's interesting that the loss of his wife has made him a softer, kinder person. It would be easy to imagine that the reverse might happen, but I like this way better. He's crushed by loss, but he isn't defeated. When it looks like the escape plan won't be possible, he does try to pull the plug. But when June stands her ground, Joseph doesn't turn her in. He could have blown the whole thing up, and instead he lets his home continue to be used as a base of operations. He reads a forbidden story to a bunch of little girls, a story about adventure. The final goodbye, when he calls June by her full, real name, was very powerful. You can't exactly forgive Commander Lawrence for all he's done, but you can still be grateful for the choices he's making now.
There was a lot of excellent tension and action in the scenes where the large group was making their way through the woods towards the plane. I really wasn't sure whether they were going to be successful or not, and my heart was in my throat the whole time. It just seemed so unlikely that they could really pull it off. When the women threw rocks to cause a distraction, and were shot down for their trouble, it meant that the kids could get free. It also meant that a lot of women were willing to give up their lives to pay for that freedom. They were true heroes. Every one of them. As I said, I kind of wish that they would have killed June, but I like that this episode kept me on my toes enough that I thought she might actually die. When she got shot, I winced. When we saw her lying on the ground, staring up at the sky as the plane took off, I wondered - is this it? Does June die, secure in her final moments that she succeeded? That's good story-telling. I really couldn't be sure where they were going with this.
Jumping to the subplot for a moment, we see that Serena continues to enjoy visitation privileges with Nichole, while Fred is questioned about the inner workings of Gilead. Serena has been given immunity in exchange for her cooperation, but Fred tells Mark Tuello about Nick, about how Serena had June sleep with him to get pregnant. Serena is arrested for facilitating this rape.
At first I was a bit unsure about this development, because Nick and June's relationship was hardly the worst thing Serena had a part in. But looking at the larger political reality, it makes sense. Serena gets immunity for stuff that Gilead forced her to do, and what happened with Nick and June was outside of that scope. The fact that Fred told Tuello about this is just huge. He was looking to hurt Serena, to punish her. But he also may have severed her last tiny sliver of hope of being any sort of mother to Nichole. Not only because she's under arrest, but because Fred has just confirmed that Nichole is not the product of the Ceremony at all. Any legal right that Serena may have tried to claim to her daughter, is moot. Even by Gilead's standards. I really want to see what happens with the Waterfords next season. It should prove to be very interesting!
I also want to talk about the little girl that June talks to, about what her life will be like outside of Gilead. For now, this girl is our proxy for all of the girls being smuggled out of Gilead. We don't know how all of them are going to react - for most of them, this life is the only one they know. I can imagine that next season, we're going to see some difficulty in assimilating. Some of these children will want to go back to their families, the only families they've ever known. But for now, we get to see the hopeful side of things. June tells this girl that outside of Gilead, she can be whoever she wants to be. She doesn't have to be a Wife or a Mother. She can wear whatever she wants. Then, as the plane lands in Canada, she asks Moira timidly - "is this the place where I can wear whatever I want?" It's such a simple thing, such a child-like example to hold on to. But it also means everything. The choice of what to wear may seem inconsequential, but it is one of the biggest ways that Gilead has to control its people. To go from a place where people are uniformed according to their function, color-coded according to their fertility and status as a woman, to a place where you can dress however you want? That's not trivial at all.
I'm so glad that we got to see the rescue through to its conclusion. Moira, Emily, and Luke are all there, along with lots of other volunteers, to see to the children as they are welcomed to Canada. There's so much going on in such a short amount of time in this final scene. Rita and Luke meet and embrace, and Rita tells Luke that this miracle is all thanks to June. We also see Luke watching the kids get off the plane, hoping against hope that he's about to be reunited with Hannah. That was heartbreaking, and makes me excited to see what happens next season. I want that reunion so bad, but I know it's not going to be easy.
This finale was pretty damn wonderful. Sure, I have the same complaints I've had all season about June's characterization. Obviously she was very brave and very much a bad-ass here, but what happened with Mrs. Lawrence is still difficult for me to accept, and the same goes for the other deaths she's helped to cause this season. All that said, I'm hopeful for what we might be getting in Season Four. I want to see more of the fall-out from this daring rescue mission. I want to spend much more time in Canada with all of our escaped characters - now including these new kids and Rita, along with Moira, Luke, and Emily! I want to see the political implications of Fred and Serena's imprisonment. I want to know what the hell is going on with Nick! There's a lot more of this story to tell, and I hope Season Four can tell it well.

Legally Swan Chapter 3
AO3: 1 I 2 I 3 I
CH 3
Emma looked around the small dorm room; it was bigger than she was expecting it to be, but still the size of a closet, a twin bed sat on side of the room, facing a small window, the closet made her cringe and think that it was a good thing she had packed light. She didn’t care much about the size, she’d slept in smaller accommodations before, and honestly, she had this gut churning excitement coursing through her. Here she was a Harvard, holy shit she was a Harvard, she had done it! She had hoped and dreamed about it, but she always had that sliver of doubt that it would not go in her favor. But she had done it and now she was here to prove herself. She thought back to her mom’s final words to her before she got in her little bug to drive cross-country to Cambridge.
“I know you have an idea of why you are doing this, but please try to put yourself first Emma. Make sure that you are happy rather than trying to make others happy.”
She understood her mother’s reluctance to accept that she was doing this for Neal, and maybe she was doing this for herself as well, she just needed to prove to her that Neal was worth it. Because he was, wasn’t he? Emma has met him her first year at UCLA, they had been together for a while and just seemed perfect. So what if he told her things she needed to fix about herself, he was just trying to help her be a better person. And sometime he was annoyed if he felt she had bested him on something, it as just his pride, it wasn’t a big deal when he put her down. She already knew most of what he told her was true anyway. She wasn’t the prettiest without makeup or good clothes, he just wanted her to look her best, there was nothing wrong with that. He thought she wasn’t smart, he had told her that before he broke up, but if she ever tried to show him she was smart, he would get angry and say she was just trying to one up him. She stopped trying to show him. The dumb blonde act wasn’t hard to keep up when people expected you to be that. She was certain that this would show him who she was and how perfect she was for him.
“Henry, are you ready to become a lawyer?” She asked her little dog, he perked up and barked at her, obviously agreeing.
When Emma had been with Ingrid for about six months, Ingrid had noticed she was showing symptoms of anxiety. It wasn’t until she witnessed a bad anxiety attack of hers that she finally convinced Emma to go to a doctor with her. When she was diagnosed with a severe anxiety disorder Emma felt even more broken than she had before. The doctor recommended medicine to help her through the attacks, and even suggested a service dog to help her during the attacks; she has shown reluctance to the first and interest in the second. Ingrid had immediately gone online to find the best service dog providers and with all permissions filled out she had gotten Emma dog who had recently completed training.
Henry didn’t seem like much, he was tiny and pretty scrawny, but Emma had fallen in love on site, and vice versa. Since then they were inseparable. It had been nerve-wracking trying to make sure that they would accept her bringing Henry to Harvard with her, of course by law they had to, but service dog laws were still minimal, and most people assumed that she was just using that as an excuse to drag her dog everywhere with her. Since getting Henry and finding the right medication her anxiety attacks had been reduced drastically. While she still had them, they weren’t as debilitating nor painful as they had been.
She was taken out of her thoughts by another bark from Henry, and she got to work on unpacking her room. It was two days before the semester would officially begin, all of her books were out, she was trying to make sure she had done all the reading required for each class before they began. A lot of the language was hard to understand at first, but she was starting to get the hang of it. Once she was all unpacked she relaxed on her bed to watch a few Netflix episodes she has missed, but after a few hours she felt restless. Maybe it was time to do some exploring around town.
---
It was a college town, so there was some nightlife, but it was tame compared to what she had dealt with at UCLA. She found a small bar at one end of town called the Rabbit Hole, it wasn’t crowded but it wasn’t dead inside either. After ordering a beer and finding a quiet booth in the back, she pulled out one of her textbooks and began going over the reading for her first class tomorrow, Law & Ethics. It was with a teacher named Professor Elsa Arendale, Emma had looked up reviews for her on a rate my professor site. She seemed harsh, cold even, with most of the students saying if you didn’t have the right answers she would kick you out of class. Emma did not want to be kicked out on her first day, and with her luck it would happen, so she was going to be prepared as she could.
“I don’t think studying is the best option at a bar on a Saturday night love.” A smooth British voice interrupted her studying.
“Not your love.” She replied automatically, not moving her eyes away from the textbook.
“Well then, I’ll need a name to call you by.” He responded; his cheerful voice seemingly not affected by her ‘back off’ tone.
“Look, I’m really not in the mood to deal with a man who assumes I need company when I'm obviously busy.” She sniped back, finally turning her eyes towards him.
Everything froze for a moment when her eyes met the most gorgeous vivid blue ones she had ever seen. He had a square, slightly stubbled jaw his mouth was stretched into a beautiful grin, one of his eyebrows was raised as she took him in. His dark hair brushed at his forehead, it made her want to run her fingers through it and see if it was as soft as it looked. Taken back by her thoughts she blinked and tried to focus.
“Well? Can I get a name now?” He asked. “I might just keep calling you love.”
“You’re going to stick around long enough? Really?” She asked, suspicious and not really liking his overall pushiness.
He shrugged before replying. “Not if you really don’t want me too, you looked stressed while reading and I thought I’d see if I could make you smile. I’d say I’ve almost accomplished it.”
She held back a small smile "And your way of doing it was to critique me?" She settled on staying annoyed with him. She definitely didn't need this right now.
"Well when you put it like that, you're right, bad form." He agreed. He grabbed her hand and brushed his lips over her knuckles. "My sincerest apologies."
She smiled and blushed a little at his actions. Emma hoped that the bar was dark enough he wouldn't see. "Since you seem intent on staying." She gestured for him to sit down
“Killian Jones as your service.” He smiled and again she was struck by just how gorgeous it was.
“Emma Swan.” She finally conceded, much to his apparent delight.
“Swan, it suits you. Now what in the hell are you doing at a bar on a Saturday night with law textbooks?”
“I don’t know you well enough to give you my life story, but I’ll tell you it’s my first year at Harvard and I’m trying to make sure I’m prepared, but I needed to get out of my room for a bit.”
“Ah, that makes much more sense. When I’m not saving damsels in distress, I’m getting ready for my final year.” Killian gave her a crooked smile.
“Hey, the only one who saves me is me. In fact I’d go as far to say that you are distracting me from my purpose.” She glared at him.
He put his hands up in placation. “Love, you were about to die of boredom or a migraine, I couldn’t very well let that happen! Besides, now that I’m here I can give you inside advice on the teachers you’ll be dealing with.”
Emma tilted her head at that, it would be nice to have some first hand information on the professors.
“Let me see your schedule.” Killian said, holding out his right hand. Emma rolled her eyes, but thought it would be nice to have a little more information from a senior who had probably dealt with most of the teachers she would meet. Pulling it up on her phone, she handed it over. He scrolled through, one eyebrow raising as he saw her classes. She already had it memorized:
7am-9am MWF-Ms. Elsa Arendale: Law and Ethics
9:30am-10:30am MWF-Mr. Isaac Print: Legal Research 101
11:15am-1:30pm MWF-Mr. Robert Gold: Complex Law & Politics
8am-11am TTH- Mr. Graham Humbert: Criminal Law Introduction
12pm-2pm TTH- Ms. Ruby Lucas: Civil Law
“Wow, you’ve got some good ones. In fact most of these will probably end up being your teacher through the rest of university.” He commented.
“So what can you tell me about them?” She asked, trying not to seem too eager.
“Well, Ms. Arendale is a hardass, she rules her class like a kingdom. Make sure you are over prepared for her, if not she’ll have no qualms kicking you out. She doesn’t tolerate people with no drive, so you’ll need to make sure you try to speak up every class. Mr. Print is, well, creepy. I honestly don’t know why he’s a teacher for law, he’s much more interested in news and politics than anything else, sit in the back in his class, he tends to lisp and spit.” He gave her a crooked grin, which she returned. “Mr. Gold hires four interns for his law office every year, so fight hard to make your case. He expects to see hard work, and likes a little blood in the water between classmates. Last semester he actually had a fist fight break out in one of his classes, he didn’t try to stop it, let them fight till one was unconscious. While the student was carried out by a few of her friends, he proceeded to lecture us about being prepared to go to war to prove your point. He doesn’t have any ethics, no qualms as long as he wins.”
Emma shifted uncomfortably as he related this information. He caught it and quickly backtracked. “He’s not the worst person, he’s just… well,” He paused for a moment to think about it. “he’s like a crocodile. Just waiting for some unsuspecting creature to get close enough to snap.”
“I thought lawyers were supposed to be sharks.” Emma joked.
“Oh most of them are, rest assured. But him, he’s different. Sharks go on the attack pretty fast, and most of the time their pray knows they’re after them. But crocodiles, they’re a quiet kind of dangerous. He doesn’t attack till he knows he can win. He has deep pockets and a lot of sources to keep him on top. Don’t let your guard down with him. And don’t give up on that internship, it’s the most coveted here, it pretty much guarantee’s you will have job offers when you graduate.”
Emma tilted her head. “Did you get the internship?”
“Aye, worked bloody hard for it too.” He spoke proudly.
“So how about the rest of the teachers?” She asked.
They got into a discussion about the rest the teachers she would have, which turned into recommendations for next semester, then his favorite classes. He tried to ask a few questions about her but she evaded them like a pro. It was getting late, time to go get some sleep, and Henry was probably missing her.
“I better get going.” She announced, gathered in books and standing up. He stood up as well and she was a little surprised that he walked out the door with her.
“May I walk you to your dorm milady?” He asked with that crooked grin, it made her heart stutter for a moment before she shook it off.
“Oh so now you’re a gentleman.” She asked, she wouldn't admit it was maybe a bit flirtatious.
“Darling, I’m always a gentleman.” Killian responded, his tongue flicking across his lips.
“I can handle myself. Thanks for the help tonight.” Emma said, and walked away.
“See you around Swan.” He called to her, making her smile at the nickname.
---
“I don’t have time to mess around Henry! I can’t get distracted by some guy.” Emma was pacing her room after returning from the bar. Henry barked and she rolled her eyes.
“Yes, okay, he was attractive.” Henry barked again. “Oh my gosh stop pushing! He was funny and interesting and maybe he didn’t see me as just a blonde. But none of that matters! I’m here for Neal remember? I’m going to prove to Neal that I’m good enough for him.”
She could almost see Henry roll his eyes. Great, she had no one to talk to but her dog now. She needed to sleep. Her room was all unpacked, she had studied, and she had had a fun night. Should could admit that to herself privately.
The next day was boring as well. Emma caught up on all reading for the classes, reading a few of the cases and quizzing herself to make sure she understood. She felt ready to go take on Harvard and show Neal who she was. Maybe she'd even run into the blue-eyed Brit a few more times.

~~~
They fell asleep in each others’ arms again that night, Han’s fingers still twisted in her hair, a rare peace settling on her heart.
In unspoken agreement, they had taken to sharing a bunk after the last nightmare incident—at first it had been hesitant, but already it felt like a comfortable routine. She had been drifting off to sleep much faster, and waking up far less. The nightmares had been fewer, too; her dreams tending to be of a more banal—and occasionally erotic—nature.
Which is why she didn’t expect the profound vividness of the surroundings that overtook her this night, untold hours after her eyes had closed.
She was in a garden, like the one at the palace in Aldera… only more so. Bigger, more lush, more beautiful; every color so gloriously vibrant that she wondered if she were seeing it for the first time.
A pleasant breeze drifted by, carrying the scent of starflowers and the sound of familiar laughter. Heart catching in her throat, she turned to find the source. No one stood there; there was only a trellis of flowering vines and a stand of fruit trees, leaves dancing in the wind.
From above came a flap of wings, and she looked up, startled by this other sound she knew by heart. Soaring above her were two large, graceful thrantas.
“Leia.” A voice whispered on the breeze. “We love you.”
The thrantas twisted and somersaulted in the air, as if to salute her, and then they soared away. She watched them for a long time, until they turned to tiny specks and finally winked out, leaving only the great blue expanse of the sky.
The blue darkened, and her sense of peace shattered like glass. She was in a strange room, clouds of steam boiling up ominously from grates that glowed orange beneath her feet.
“Leia!” That was Han’s voice, desperate and pained. She looked around, frantic, but all around her the billowing steam gathered into a fog her eyes could not pierce. From their depths came a ragged scream—Han’s scream. “No!” Leia cried, stumbling forward. He screamed again. Desperate, she plunged into the mists. One foot caught and the other met with air, and suddenly she was tumbling—down, down into darkness and bone-numbing cold.
She woke up with a jolt, sitting straight up in the bunk.
“Mmmph,” Han grunted from beside her, reaching out sleepily for the warmth that had left his side. She caught his hand and let out a slow breath. Not real, she told herself. She fell back on the bunk, snuggling into him.
“Y’okay?” Han mumbled.
“Sshh,” she whispered. “I’m fine. Just another bad dream.”
He rolled to face her, seeming to shed layers of sleep as he did so. “You sure? It’s okay if you wanna talk about it. I’m awake.”
“No, really, it’s fine.” She wasn’t even sure what she’d seen, or if she could describe it. It was like none of her dreams before. All she could be certain of was the deep unease that had settled on her, and a far-off echo of pain and loss.
Han looked at her with concern.
“Just… hold me.” She nestled into him, taking comfort in his warmth, and he snuggled her close. That strange, misty room still haunted her, lurking at the back of her thoughts, but she focused on Han as he kissed her forehead, stroked her hair. Soon she relaxed, her breathing deepened, and she knew no more.
____
The dream with the strange room came back again the next night, and the next. Leia felt troubled, an anxious feeling growing steadily inside her with each passing day.
She didn’t tell Han. It felt almost silly. She had never seen that room in her life; it was like none of her nightmares before. What was she supposed to tell him? That she was afraid of a place she’d never known? That she had a strange sense she couldn’t shake off that it was real? That somehow, against all reason and logic, she feared she was seeing visions of the future? That’s ridiculous, she told herself.
But even so, she felt a deep dread that rose with every parsec they traveled closer to Bespin.
They would be there by the end of the week.
In some ways, that was a relief. While it had been unexpectedly nice to get away for awhile (and more than nice to be sharing that time with Han), the ship’s confines seemed to be steadily shrinking; the grubby if beloved bulkheads were feeling more and more like a cage. She could hardly wait for a breath of fresh air, for the feel of wind on her face, for space to… she wasn’t sure what. Run? Jump? Do a whirling kavadango dance? The thought made her smile.
On the other hand, she could almost stay on this cramped ship forever if it meant no more change, no more loss.
She was in the ‘fresher, meticulously brushing out her hair. It turned out that there were consequences to sleeping without it tucked into its usual long braid, particularly when someone’s hands had been tangled up in it all night—consequences that took some steady, persistent work to set right. She and Han had both laughed at the state of things that first morning after he’d unpinned it, but she suspected he rather liked it that way. Moreover, she was enjoying this new level of intimacy too much to object. Even the act of having to brush it all out made her feel a little bit giddy, despite the worry that still gnawed at her gut.
Finishing up, she slipped into her leggings and long-sleeved shirt, and, with her hair still cascading loose down her back—she’d leave it that way, at least for the morning—she headed out to find breakfast, leaving her dark dreams behind.
____
Leia tiptoed around the bend of the corridor, back against the inner wall, heartbeat pounding. She tried to quiet the sound of her breathing. Was that the creak of a floor panel she heard from up ahead? Silently she crept forward, inch by inch. Slowly, the door to the crew quarters came into view. It was open. She froze, considering what might be lurking in the dark.
Nothing emerged, so she released the breath she was holding and continued edging along the corridor, scouring her memory for any clues as to which floor panels were the creaky ones. For a moment she considered taking refuge in the crew quarters, but she dismissed the thought just as quickly. She might have hidden in the ‘fresher or even tucked herself into a cupboard, but then she’d be stuck—there was only one way in or out of the room. The primary circuitry bay that opened up opposite it, however… it wasn’t large, but it did have some potential hiding spots, if she could get settled in quickly….
A massive blur shot at her from around the bend. “GOTCHA!” it yelled.
Crew quarters it was. With a stifled shriek, she darted across the hall and into the room, pounding the controls to shut the door behind her. Squinting, she willed her eyes to adjust to the darkness as she cast about the room for further refuge.
Too late. The door swished open, the lights blazed on, and in an instant Han was on top of her, tackling her to the bunk. She burst out laughing at the sudden jolt of adrenaline, and he laughed too, planting a kiss on her forehead. “Like I told you,” he said, grinning.
She rolled her eyes. “Whatever you say, hot shot. We both know I’ll win the next one.” Reaching up, she grabbed his head and pulled it down so his lips met hers, and they spent a moment reveling in Han’s success.
She’d had her own successes, too, at this game of hide, chase, and seek. Not half an hour before, she had been the one to discover Han as he tried to slip into one of his smuggling compartments. She’d gotten a good kiss for her efforts then, too.
Chewie had long ago thrown up his hands in annoyance at their antics before retreating to the number three hold, but Leia didn’t feel the slightest sliver of guilt. This was exhilarating, especially after being cooped up on the the ship for so long. Maybe two and a half weeks trapped in space had driven them a little insane, but she couldn’t remember the last time she had laughed this hard; the last time she had given herself permission to act this silly and carefree. She felt like a young teenager all over again.
The most mystifying part was that despite the adrenaline, the creeping around, and the surprises from dark corners, she actually felt safe. The instinctual fear and panic had faded, replaced by delight, excitement, assuredness, love. It was as if this trip had been slowly drawing her out of herself—or rather, drawing her out of the part of herself that was besieged by all that she’d been through, and into whatever part of herself still held the echo of being whole. She wasn’t entirely there yet, but it was extraordinary nonetheless.
What was also extraordinary was how in the span of a couple weeks, Han had dispensed with the illusions and indecision and put all his cards on the table. She knew now that he had set aside his own past of betrayal and heartache to love her wholeheartedly, and she did not take for granted the courage it took him to do so. It only made her love him more.
Pulling herself out of her thoughts, she deepened the kiss, and Han pressed into it hungrily. His hands ran down her side and over her hair, and she followed suit, greedy for more of him.
Han’s scream. Orange mist. Cold.
She froze.
Han pulled back, looking at her with concern. “You all right, Leia? This too much?”
“I—” she stuttered, not sure what to say. “I’m fine. This is fine. Just an intrusive thought, that’s all.” She smiled at him, willing the images away, and raised an eyebrow. “I didn’t tell you to stop.”
The worry didn’t fully leave his eyes, but after a moment he shrugged, smiling back at her. Soon she was once again lost in the sensation of his lips. For awhile, she was almost able to forget.
He broke it off without warning, jumping out of the bunk. She started to get up after him, intending to pull him back down, but he raised a finger to stop her. “Better start counting, Your Worshipfulness,” he declared, and then with one last cheeky grin, he made a bolt for the door.
Leia found herself laughing freely once more as she fell back onto the bunk, ready to begin the hunt all over again.
____
“You know, I saw you in a holovid, once.”
They lay on the bunk together, worn out from the afternoon’s chase. Han was sprawled out on his back, arms tucked behind his head; Leia was on her side, propped up on an arm so she could get a good look at him. Right now, she was particularly enamored with the way his hair stuck up in various places and how his eyes creased when he let out one of his rare, genuine, full-throated laughs.
“Really?” she replied, intrigued.
“Yeah. You were giving a speech in the Senate. I don’t know what the hell it was about—never payed any attention to politics anyway—but I remember it said you were ‘Alderaan’s princess and newly elected senator’ or somethin’ like that.”
Leia chuckled. That could have been any number of occasions—she’d given many speeches over the course of her short time as senator. And the HoloNet had always emphasized her royal title above and beyond anything else, to her annoyance. “Any particular reason you remembered me?”
“You were pretty.”
“Of course you’d say that,” she said, shaking her head in amusement.
“Hey, don’t blame me. Couldn’t help but notice.” He grinned. “But the thing that really made me sit back and watch for a minute was this: You were all dressed in white but you were a kriffin’ fireball. Whatever you were saying, you really believed it. Didn’t often see that from all those high ’n mighty politicians up there on Coruscant. Made me believe for a second that someone up there was actually gettin’ something done, tryin’ to make things better.”
Leia felt unexpectedly moved. “Thanks, Han. It means a lot to hear that.” She studied his chin, marked by that interesting little scar. “I… well, at least I tried. For awhile I believed maybe I could get something done there, but—” she shook her head, the memories flooding back. “The Empire’s grip on the Senate was so tight, and getting tighter every day. I thought being a senator would be one of the best ways to make a difference in the galaxy, but it turns out that by the time I got there, it was all a sham. What really mattered was my work for the Alliance, and my mercy missions.”
“Mercy missions?”
“I did a lot of charity work, disaster relief, that sort of thing, on many different worlds. Sometimes we used it as a cover for the Rebellion, but a lot of times it was legitimate. The Empire was doing so much damage, everywhere. I may have been a thorn in their side, but I was liked well enough that they couldn’t afford to stop me, not for a long time.”
She grew silent as she remembered some of the horrors she had seen back then. The faces of young and old alike, beings of countless species and genders, desperate and hungry and suffering in so many ways. The weariness that lined every inch of their forms. The spark of hope, however small, in their eyes when she brought help. She had made it her personal goal to fan that hope into flame, but as long as the Empire stood, even that seemed in vain. She wondered where some of those beings were now, and if they were any better off than before.
Han was staring at her, brows furrowed. “You made a difference, you know,” he said, seemingly reading her thoughts. “Yeah, the Empire might have come in and undone a whole lot of it, but it meant something. To those people.” He blew out a breath. “There weren’t a whole lot of beings who gave a damn about me growing up, but occasionally someone would care for a bit. Do some act of kindness, give me a piece of bread or somethin’. When you’re in a place like I was… that’s something you don’t forget.”
Leia nodded, thoughtful. That’s something you don’t forget. She filed that away to bring out the next time she felt the nearness of despair.
Swallowing down the sudden lump in her throat, she abruptly remembered something she had meant to ask him earlier, after his mention of the holovid, and she smiled. “Say, did I ever tell you I saw an old, decrepit YT-1300 a lot like the Falcon once, back in my younger days? Ever since I met you, I’ve always wondered if it were you.”
“There ain’t nothin’ like this ship, sister,” Han said, grinning back at her. “Not gonna bet any credits on it, but I wouldn’t be surprised, either. When and where was it?”
“On Coruscant, six years ago. I was desperate for secret transport off-planet. I was going to try that ship, but it took off before I could reach it or see anyone on board.”
Han frowned. “Only been to Coruscant a couple a’ times, and I can’t remember when.” He shrugged. “Still, it very well coulda been Chewie n’ me. Who knows, you mighta fallen for me a lot earlier!” He waggled his eyebrows.
Leia chuckled. “I was sixteen, Han! If I had, I would have been too young for you.”
He whistled. “Damn, you’re right. Thing is, you act so much bigger than everyone else, command the hell outta everyone, I forget you’re that much younger than me.”
She laughed, letting her head sink down on the bed. Han rolled over on his side to face her, and he reached out a hand to tuck aside a strand of hair that had fallen in her face. Most of it was up in a braid now—as nice as it felt to wear it down for a change, it was not in any way practical for running around and concealing oneself on a ship.
Darkness. Cold. Steam billowing up through floor vents.
No.
Leia tried to force the images away, angry at the intrusion. She just wanted to be here, now, happy and enjoying this moment with Han. Why couldn’t they just let her be?
“Leia?”
“Hmm?”
“What’s wrong?”
She let out a small sigh. The thoughts kept invading no matter what, so she supposed she might as well stop pretending. A small wave of relief swept over her at the thought.
“Han…” she began, searching out the right words. “Do you ever get the sense that something’s about to go very wrong, and there’s nothing you can do to stop it?”
They were lying face to face, now, his hand still running through her hair, and she could clearly see the concern and confusion in his eyes.
“Uh… not really. Usually I just try to trust my luck and, uh, hope for the best.”
“I don’t mean it like that. It’s… it’s not a matter of optimism or pessimism, or intuition, even. I’m talking about a premonition; a certainty deep down that something is going to happen.”
Han looked slightly alarmed. “I get a lot of bad feelings about stuff, but I’m not sure I’ve ever felt… certain like that. What, you worried we’re in danger?”
“I… I don’t know. I’ve been having these dreams.” She paused, collecting her thoughts. “For the past few nights now. It’s always the same. And it’s so vivid, Han. I can’t shake the foreboding that somehow it’s real, and that it’s lying in wait for us.”
Han shook his head. “Sweetheart, you’ve had enough horrible stuff happen to you. You gotta admit it makes a lot of sense for your brain to start expecting more horrible stuff just around the corner.”
That was the conclusion she had come to as well, the explanation that made the most sense. But it didn’t change the way she felt. “I guess so. I just wish I could convince my brain that’s all it is.” She sighed, suddenly fighting back tears. “I’m just so tired of this, Han. I’m tired of feeling trapped in all this fear and grief. Always waiting for the next disaster to strike. Always remembering what happened and being afraid of what will.” He moved in a little closer and continued to stroke her hair. “I’m so tired,” she repeated in a whisper, closing her eyes against it all.
“Leia.” Han’s voice was thick, and she blinked to find his eyes gazing back at her own, grave and passionate and determined. “Someday, whenever you’re ready… I’d like to help you escape that world for awhile.”
Leia’s breath caught in her throat and her stomach fluttered as the full sense of his words hit her. Yes, she thought, I’d like that, too. All at once she was filled with overwhelming longing, and a part of her was tempted to act; act to make “someday” now.
But… no, she couldn’t afford that. Not yet.
Still, she managed a slow smile against the ache in her chest, the lightness in her head, the warmth growing in her body. “Someday,” she repeated, drawing a hand up to caress his face.
Han nodded, and then she was once again almost lost in his long, gentle kiss, wondering if that day of escape would ever come.
“He’s here to see you again.”
Thud. Thud. Thud.
“Honey, stop slamming your head against the counter. You’re going to give yourself a concussion.”
“Sounds like a fun way to go.”
“He’s been waiting outside for quite some time.” The older woman hums, one hand on her pregnant belly and the other resting on top of your shoulder.
When you first arrived in the new beachside town, you had high hopes of being incredibly popular and staying in a fabulous mansion where you practically drown in luxury. Instead, you’re stuck living in a one-room apartment with your cat familiar, Mochi, and working for Lee Eunji and her husband as their very first delivery witch.
While most of the townspeople saw witches as nothing but troublemakers, Eunji saw a new opportunity.
“Tell him I’m dead.” You rub at your forehead once the throbbing became too much.
“He said he’d buy a Ouija board.”
“Tell him I moved away.”
“He can literally see you.” Eunji scoffs, waving a hand towards the front of the store.
With a disgruntled huff, you lift your head to follow Eunji’s line of sight.
Park Jimin stands with his hands tucked in his front pockets and an exasperated look on his face. He paces in front of the doorway, muttering something to himself while glancing into the store from the corner of his eye. When he notices your staring, he skids to a stop.
To this day, you have no clue why he’s interested in you. Sure, you’re a witch who can do all types of magic and fly on a broomstick which is enough to entertain the grumpiest of fiends. But one thing’s for sure – you and Park Jimin are two different people heading down two different paths. He’s the stereotypical rich boy who’s loved and admired by all simply for breathing air. Meanwhile, you’re the scary girl who can’t hold a decent conversation with another person without them sputtering something about magic and witchcraft.
“See?” Eunji chuckles at your obvious discomfort. “Can’t back out of this one, bud. Just go see what he wants.”
“Do you think you can bail me out of jail after I charm him into a cockroach and squish him with my foot?” You lean your cheek against the crook of your elbow in thought.
“How about…” Eunji brushes back the strands of hair that fall across your face. “…you not resort to murder and just talk to him like a normal human being?”
“You’re just saying that because you think he’s pretty. He’s cast a spell on you too.” You roll your eyes as Eunji motions for Jimin to come inside.
“You’re the only witch here, sweetheart.” Eunji winks before going to check on the freshly baked loaves of bread resting in the kitchen.
Jimin glows brighter than usual, his swept-back blond hair hidden underneath a red beret that makes him look like a stereotypical French boy. You snort to yourself when you take in the rest of his outfit – black-and-white striped shirt tucked into slim-fitting slacks with sleek black dress shoes.
Talk about Mr. Goody-Two-Shoes.
“Why, hello there, Mr. Park! What can we do for you today?” Eunji peeps her head through the kitchen doorway.
“Hi, Mrs. Lee.” Jimin replies smoothly, hands crossed behind his back in an innocent manner. “I was wondering if I could grab Y/N for a second.”
You could barely hold back your disgust when you notice Eunji melting under Jimin’s sweet façade. He has virtually everyone in town wrapped around his stupid chubby pinky finger, and you refuse to let yourself fall for one of his tricks.
“Y/N’s not here right now.” You grit your teeth. “Please leave a message after the fuc—"
“Y/N! Be nice.”
You push off of the stool you were sitting in behind the counter with a grunt. Your muscles are still sore from your delivery yesterday. Thankfully, there aren’t any major deliveries that afternoon so you’re free to stuff your face with as many as chocolate pastries as your heart desires.
Jimin draws in a small breath as you approach, mentally preparing his little speech he wrote on his way to the bakery that afternoon. He starts to open his mouth but only lets out a pathetic squeak as you roughly brush past him on your way to the pastry tray on the other side of the room.
“Y/N!” Eunji scolds before turning to Jimin with an apologetic pout. “I’m so sorry about her, she’s still trying to get used to everything.”
“Oh no, I understand!” Jimin chuckles awkwardly, a hand reaching behind to rub the back of his neck. “Anyways…Y/N, there’s s-something I wanted to ask you.”
You hum absentmindedly as you stuff a large creampuff into your mouth. You wonder if you could cast a spell to speed up his spiel so that you’ll still have time to catch the new episode of your favorite television show that’s scheduled to air in a half hour.
“My aviation club at school is hosting a party this Saturday.” Jimin announces, his voice wavering from subtle nerves. “I was wondering if you would like to come.”
You silently scold your heart for thumping a little harder than usual. Attending a party with Jimin as his…date. The word should have sent a disgusted shiver down your spine, but all you get is a flood of butterflies in your stomach.
For some reason, the thought of Jimin in a tuxedo didn’t seem so bad.
“Oh, that sounds lovely!” Eunji claps her hands excitedly. “It’ll be a great chance for you to make some friends, Y/N!”
“Oh yeah, definitely!” Jimin blurts out. “The rest of the guys are just dying to meet a witch. They’re really curious to learn more about how your broom works!”
Just like that, the mood dies. As a matter of fact, it doesn’t just die. It comes barreling towards the earth in a frenzy of fire and heat, striking the ground with tremendous force and destroying everything in its path.
He didn’t want you to go with him – he just wants to show you off like some circus act to his friends.
In that moment, you’re reminded of why you didn’t trust him. He might have Eunji and everyone else fooled, but you know better. Park Jimin’s just like everyone else, and you curse yourself for nearly falling into his trap.
Eunji watches inquisitively as you make your way towards the boy holding the invitation in both hands. There’s a tight grin that stretches across your face in a Cheshire Cat-like manner. The sight is quite unsettling to Eunji, but Jimin still beams at you as if he’s found the answers to his prayers.
“An invitation just for me?” You grab the invitation, ignoring the pleasant sensation of his soft skin brushing against yours.
“Yup! I saved one just for you.” Jimin nods excitedly.
“Oh really?”
“Yes! We’re really interested in learn—”
Rrrrip.
Jimin’s smile breaks as you tear the card in half. You barely hear Eunji gasping in the background as you shred the invitation into several jagged pieces. With a snap of your fingers, the slivers of paper burst into flames and float pathetically to the linoleum floor in a burnt crisp.
In an instant, your crazed smile transforms into a disgusted scowl. “Thanks for the invite, but I’d prefer company with people who don’t use me as their personal flying monkey.”
“Y/N!” Eunji hisses sharply.
You ignore her. “I know you think that you’re being cute and funny, but honestly, you’re just annoying and pathetic.”
Jimin stands frozen in the middle of the bakery, his bleary eyes fixated on the burnt strips scattered across the floor. Eunji rushes over from the kitchen to collect the mess with a broom and dustpan, glancing up when she notices your figure escape through the backdoor towards your living quarters.
“Jimin, I am so sorry about her.” Eunji sighs in exasperation. “I don’t know what’s gotten into her.”
Jimin nods stiffly. “It’s n-no problem. I understand…”
Eunji opens her mouth at another attempt of a worthless apology, but Jimin’s already turning on his heel and heading out of the door, the tiniest sniffle betraying his quiet composure. Eunji watches in pity as Jimin disappears down the street with his shoulders slumped forward and his hands tucked into his front pockets once more.
He’s lucky that his route continues straight down the road. That way, Eunji doesn’t notice the tears dribbling down his cheeks reddened from embarrassment.
Tumblr media
Ever since you burned his invitation in his face, Eunji hasn’t spoken to you. After you escaped the bakery and hid in your room to watch tv with Mochi, she barged in with the pile of ashes in her hands. She promptly tosses the charred papers on top of your nightstand, turning on her heel with a repulsed sneer.
“I’m disappointed in you. Honestly.”
Whether you like it or not, your chest twinges with guilt. Apart from being like a second mother to you, Eunji’s your best friend. When you faced the threat of living out on the streets with no food or money, she was the one who took you under her wing and offered you not only a job but a place to sleep and eat.
Now, it’s as if the sight of you makes her sick to her stomach. This time, you couldn’t even blame Park Jimin for it.
“If he just left me alone like I told him millions of times before, we wouldn’t be having this issue.”
“That may be,” Mochi purrs. “But you did embarrass him by burning his invitation in his face. The very same invitation he had kept specifically for you and only you.”
“So?” You grumble. “He only invited me because he wanted me to entertain his dumb friends.”
The gentle evening breeze soars in through your open window, chilling you to the bone. You slightly curse at yourself for not dressing in warmer pajamas, but your earnings for the month wouldn’t give you much. You’d borrow from Eunji, but 1) most of her wardrobe right now are maternity clothes and 2) she currently refuses to speak with you.
You let out a long whine, sounding exactly like your five-year-old self who cried when a wave toppled her over during a family vacation to the beach. “Do I have to?”
Mochi stares at you without a word.
“What if I fake my death?”
“Y/N…”
“Okay, fine…but if he doesn’t accept my apology, then can I fake my death?”
Tumblr media
You feel silly.
Dressed in a white dress that molds tightly against your waist and puffs out at the skirt, you look and feel like a creampuff. After begging for her forgiveness for two hours straight, Eunji goes to work on preparing your party outfit. You pout about the centimeter-thick layer of foundation and powder, but Eunji shrugs off your complaints with an uncaring smirk. Perhaps it’s your punishment for not listening to her in the first place.
“It’s itchy.” You whine as the lace fabric continues to scratch against your skin.
Eunji holds in her laughter as you shift uncomfortably in your seat. “If only you focused on your special magic training and not on hurting the feelings of people who like you, you could have learned how to cast an anti-itching spell.”
“Spells are hard…” You pout. “And he doesn’t like me, he just wants to pretend to get to know me so that he can tell people that he knows a witch. It’s exploitation at its finest.”
Eunji shakes her head in disbelief. “I’d think you witches would have some type of clairvoyance about you, but you’re completely dense.”
“I’m not a psychic.” You roll your eyes. “I’m starting to think that no one in this town cares enough to educate themselves on witch culture.”
“Well, if you weren’t such a grumpy old troll, then maybe you could educate those people about witches.” Eunji pokes your nose with the end of a concealer brush as she finishes up the last touch-ups to your makeup.
“I shouldn’t have to.” You try to cross your arms, but you find it almost impossible considering how tight the chest of the dress was. “For once, I want someone to learn for themselves for once instead of using me for laughs and giggles.”
Eunji sighs in defeat. While the makeup and fancy dress did wonders to brighten your usual gloomy appearance, the frown marring your brow seems to remain there permanently.
“Honey…” Eunji says quietly. “I might not be a witch, but I know a thing or two about love. That boy definitely likes you for you, not because he wants to cross ‘Meet a witch’ off his bucket list.”
You continue to fiddle with the lace of the skirt, nearly ripping out a stray thread before laying your palms flat in your lap.
“I’ve never seen a boy so adamant about visiting a girl everyday even if he can just get one sentence in.” Eunji laughs softly. “Reminds me of my husband when we were first dating. He wouldn’t let me go for one second.”
You try to laugh, but you end up looking like you swallowed something inedible.
“I’m not saying that you need to date him or anything.” Eunji shakes her head. “I’m just saying that you should give Jimin a chance. You’d do good with some friends in this town, even if it’s just him.”
With that, Eunji holds out a clenched fist. You’re quick to grab whatever’s in her hands, but you instantly blanch when the substance fills your palms. While most of the invitation’s burnt to a crisp, one part of the paper remains semi-readable.
“Ms. Witch…”
A couple days ago, you’d be rolling your eyes and threatening to shove your broomstick where the sun won’t shine if Jimin had called you by that nickname. Now, all you could feel is a delightful warmth that spreads from your face down to your toes.
You’re screwed. You’re definitely screwed.
“You might want to head off now!” Eunji yells. You lift your head in surprise when you notice that she’s already escaped into the kitchen. “It looks like it’s going to rain! Better not be late!”
Desperately shoving the remnants of the invitation into your bra, you barely spare a coherent farewell as you dash into the street and kicking off the ground with your broomstick between your legs. As you head southwest towards the party, you force several deep breaths as you settle the anxiety that plagues your veins and kickstarts your heart into overdrive.
“This better work.” You whisper to yourself, ignoring the tiny droplets of water that begin to fall from the cluster of clouds above.
Tumblr media
Your jaw drops at the vast size of the house. Classical music plays on repeat as the guests mingle around the dining room that looks as though it could fit an entire country and a half inside. You observe from the outside, completely unbothered as the rain soaks through your clothes and streaks your makeup. While you take a moment to admire the decorations strung across the walls and on the ceiling, your eyes wander in search of one individual in particular.
“Excuse me.” Someone coughs.
Behind you, a boy watches you with a dirty look, almost as if he wishes to say, “You obviously look like you don’t belong here”. While he isn’t far from the truth, you couldn’t help but mirror his unimpressed glare.
“I’m sorry, but this party is reserved for members only.” He retorts snootily. “I’m afraid I’m going to ask you to leave.”
“Jokes on you, asshole, I have an invitation…” You answer quickly.
“Is that so?” He asks with a pretentious scoff. “Where is it?”
You choke on your words. You almost forgot that the evidence is literally shoved inside your cleavage. “U-Um…well the thing is…”
“Y/N?”
You, along with Mr. Stick-Stuck-High-Up-In-My-Ass, turn towards the new visitor. Your heart prickles with something foreign at the sight of Park Jimin in a suit and tie and a cute flower tucked inside his pocket.
“Hi…” You reply meekly, eyes fixated on the growing puddle on the edge of the sidewalk.
You completely miss the elated glint in Jimin’s eyes.
“She’s your guest, Park?” The boy asks warily, still viewing you as some kind of creature who escaped from the Black Lagoon.
You’ll be sure to add a little something extra to his hors d’oeuvres when you get the chance.
“Yeah, she’s my plus-one.” Jimin answers confidently. “I didn’t get to give her the invitation, but her name’s on the list if you want to check.”
The boy watches Jimin carefully before rolling his eyes. “I’ll be sure to check the list. Be sure that next time, everyone has an invite before they just show up unannounced and unwanted.”
Oh, how you wish you could use your magic for bad just once. Sure, you might face lifelong consequences that could inevitably affect your future…but would one time really make a difference?
“Sorry about him.” Jimin scratches the back of his neck. “Jihyun can be pretty uptight sometimes…”
“I can handle uptight just fine.” You shrug awkwardly. “T-Thanks though.”
Jimin clears his throat. “Yeah, of course! Anytime…”
There’s a brief moment of silence that you wish you could break without looking like a complete fool. Thankfully, Jimin takes the initiative from you.
“Y-You look really pretty.”
Thankfully, the foundation that Eunji caked onto your cheeks covers any sign of redness. Unfortunately, it did make you look like you took a dip into a giant frosting container.
“Thanks, you don’t look so bad yourself.” You force yourself to playfully nudge at his shoulder. “You clean up rather nicely.”
“T-Thanks, my mom picked it out.” Jimin immediately clamps his mouth shut. You smile at the obvious embarrassment that floods his features and purses his lips into a demure pout.
It’s cute. In fact, it’s the type of cute that makes you want to drop everything and bring him back home to introduce to your entire family.
If only Eunji were here, she’d be getting a kick out of your emotional turmoil.
“Uh, a-anyways,” Jimin stammers nervously. “Why did you come tonight?”
You raise an eyebrow, making Jimin quickly backpedal on his words.
“N-Not that you’re not allowed to come! You’re totally allowed to come, it’s totally fine by me. I j-just thought you didn’t want to…you know, after you…burned the invitation to a crisp.”
“Oh yeah! That reminds me…”
Jimin pales as you dig inside to collect the blackened scraps, your tongue poking through the side of your mouth in concentration. He quickly diverts his attention towards the large oak tree hanging overhead, trying hard not to think about how your breasts are half a foot away from his face.
“There we are!”
Hesitantly craning his neck towards you once more, Jimin meets your upturned hands that cradle the destroyed scraps of the invitation. He cocks an eyebrow at this – what’s he supposed to do with that?
Jimin swallows his retort when suddenly, the papers swirl around almost like in a mini tornado, fusing back together. With a poof, the paper transforms from a charcoal black to its original eggshell white, complete with the original detailing and “Dear Ms. Witch…” at the very top of the card. As a special treat, you add an extra touch that Jimin can’t help but crack a smile at.
There’s a crude stick figure drawing of the two of you sitting side-by-side with a tiny pink heart floating above your heads. It may have been a trick of the light, but Jimin could swear that your little stick figure presses a kiss to stick figure Jimin’s cheek.
“Ta-da…” You smile shyly as you slip the paper into Jimin’s hand. “It’s corny, I know, but…”
“W-What changed your mind?” Jimin asks bashfully as he presses the card to his chest.
You shrug teasingly. “You’re not as bad as I thought you were. Also, it helps that you’re a little cute.”
“And the truth?”
“Eunji threatened to steal my broomstick and sell it in next week’s yard sale if I didn’t show up.”
“Why am I not surprised?”
Better does not mean cured.
Dan sat in their lounge; it was well past one in the morning. It was silent and he was staring into the room shrouded in blackness with only a sliver of visible light from a nearby room. The thing that most don’t' understand is that just because you are in therapy or on medication, it doesn’t cure you. As he sat, he struggled really to feel anything.
Read on A03
Part 4 of the “ Ghost version of myself” series
The warmth of their lounge could not be felt, the happiness that lived there was nowhere to be seen. The worst part about this, is Dan knew, that if it were another day, he would feel and see these things.  It wasn’t as if he chose to feel this way on these days, however, he still felt guilty when he thought about it after, knowing what the day would have been like for Phil.  Sometimes, when he got like this, he wanted to call a car and go to a hotel so he would not have to expose the person he cared about most to this. That’s not to say that Phil felt that way, in fact, he never complained, it was Dan who felt guilty. Through therapy, he discovered that the toxic voices in his head were the real cause of the guilt. They made him feel like he should isolate; and though he had the knowledge that it was not effective, every time this happened, he still struggled not to flee.
Hours passed, the lighting in the room was now natural with the rising sun. Dan took a deep breath, trying to clear the fog in his head. He wanted to be mad, he wanted to cry, he wanted to feel anything, but it would not come. This was something that terrified him before he had the skills to process it; the thought that one of these episodes would be it, that he would be this numb forever. He now knew, even though he was in this mind frame, that it would eventually pass and he would come out the other side, safe. There was a time when he did not know this. Even though he had this knowledge, it didn’t matter in the present moment, he had been sat still on the sofa for hours, watching the night turn to day. Insomnia also was something that he had become familiar with, it was the running joke that they’d be up all night, but mostly what happened was Dan couldn’t sleep and Phil didn’t want him to be sat up alone spiraling.  This is why Dan started to keep it more to himself. He knew it wasn’t good that Phil would lack sleep because of Dan’s illness, Phil could get sick and was suffering from losing rest on these nights; it was also becoming more and more frequent.  Not sharing many of his sleepless nights was something Dan had to do for Phil. This was not self-destructive behavior, rather a gesture of love. Phil never saw it that way, but that didn't change Dan's actions, he had to take care of Phil too, in whatever way he could.
The first notes of bird song started to come alive with the world, Dan turned his head slightly to the sound, trying to really focus on it.  He wanted to be a part of the real world again, he wanted to smile at the melodies that disrupted the silence, yet he couldn't muster the energy.  This was part of his mental panic as well, he knew on days like these he was a waste, and therefore he was wasting his life. Sometimes a week would go by and nothing productive would happen.  If he had a physical illness, that would be acceptable, but when your mind is broken, all people see is laziness. He didn’t really care what other people thought, though, it was more important what he thought.  Life was so short and here he was wasting it on the couch, the worst part was it wasn’t like this was just one day. Over the span of his life, he was sure he had wasted months, if not years. This caused more time to be wasted, as he would spend hours of wasted time, panicking about wasted time.
His therapist asked him why he always had to judge his own actions so harshly, he couldn’t answer her.  It was something he always had done, perhaps something he was raised to do. It may not have even been intentional on his parents' part, however, it became some of the bits and pieces that had managed to cling onto Dan the child and were passed onto Dan the adult. It was part of mindfulness to “let things go,” stay in the present moment, yet Dan struggled with this too. It was better now than it had been when he first started meditating, he was convinced it wouldn’t ever work; that he would never be able to quiet his mind enough to become relaxed. That was somewhat true, but just like everything, it took practice and refocusing.  He eventually learned the style and way to meditate that was best for him to gain the most benefits out of it, though had you asked him years ago, he would not believe that to be true.
He should meditate now, he should try to distinguish between if there was a cause for this episode or not, because with depression it isn’t one or the other. Sometimes it’s both, sometimes it’s neither.  In the earlier years this was a reason he spent so much time in his own head, trying to figure out why he was “sad” when there wasn’t a reason, or using his diagnosis of depression as an all-encompassing “catch-all” when things upset him and he did not want to address it, speak about it or to think of it.   He remembers many times saying “I’m depressed,” when in reality something had been said that had hurt him. It was easier to do that than identify the emotions that he actually was feeling. That too, became tedious and stressful; thus, his therapist tasked him to ask himself a question; “What’s the why?”  and so he adopted a process of sorts on the days he was able.  Could he identify the emotion? Could he identify the cause of that emotion? Could he identify why this action, idea, thought, or perceived action, thought or idea was causing him to feel the way he was?  This helped him understand not only himself better, but also how to communicate with others.
Asserting his own needs is how the therapist explained it. This, however, was much easier said than done. It was hard to express himself, to expose the innermost vulnerability for one so self-sufficient was an undiscovered territory for Dan.  The first time he actually tried to "assert his own needs," ended up in a flustered mess that eventually he reneged on. The next time was also immensely difficult as he tripped and stuttered over his words, unable to fully explain what he needed. The third time, however, he was able to express himself in a way the other person could understand, he still flushed in the face, his mouth still went dry, but he had succeeded.  This did not stop the guilt or remorse afterword, that he wasn’t prepared for. When years are spent always putting others first, he had unintentionally conditioned himself to come last. The knee-jerk emotions did fade with time; he still struggles with that now; however, it is much less. Today he knew he needed to ask for help, he was working up the courage to do so. Even though he was better at it, Dan doubted it would ever be "easy" for him.
It had just gone past nine when Phil appeared, a sleepy smile on his face quickly fading to concern as he saw Dan.  Quietly he sat next to him, not speaking or moving too quickly, never touching him.  It seemed that the years of this had conditioned him to. When Dan expressed penitence for this, Phil dismissed it quickly.  “I don’t feel bad about it, you shouldn’t either,” he had said.  Phil failed to stifle a yawn, sideways glancing at Dan, waiting for him to become comfortable with his presence.
In a rough, scratchy voice from disuse, he said. “Hi, Phil.”
“Hey,” Phil said softly.
“I didn’t sleep and I am feeling quite poorly today,”
Phil knew, but he wouldn't ever say so, he would never invalidate Dan's feelings like that. “What Can I do for you?”
“I don’t know,” It was honest, perhaps frustrating, but honest.
“Why don’t I fill the tub for you, and we can see how you feel once you’re clean?”  Phil suggested helpfully.  It was if he could sense the best way to help at that particular moment, though this wasn't new. He always could, and Dan was forever grateful for that.
Dan turned slightly to him and nodded. This was a start, and deep down he knew that with Phil offering support this day would pass and he would be okay. “Yeah, thanks.”
“You’re welcome.”
Dan knew that no matter how awful he felt, he could count on Phil to take care of him. It was the constant he needed and would always cherish. One way or another, he was determined not to waste this day, not this time.  After all, with Phil at his side, he could take on the world.
Overall, respondents had a positive experience with the anime’s retelling of the Uprising arc with a 4 being the most popular ranking. It seems most believe there was room for improvement, but that it was overall enjoyable!
Good shit man, good shit. Next arc is gonna wring my heart dry of every last feel in existence, but so far I am satisfied.
This season was poor. I hoped for better. The scenes I loved it the manga were removed. Lots of character development was gone. But my biggest pain is anime version of Kenny. I will be honest - I am disappointed.
I liked it but the manga version will always hold a special place in my heart
I thought it was amazing, despite all the new things and things taken out. I still love the series way too much to really criticize choices they or Isayama make. I know I'm still gonna watch it and love it.
Nearly half of voters favor the Clash of the Titans arc’s adaptation the most so far, but the Uprising arc came at a surprisingly strong second overall!
Well done, WIT Studio! Although some of my favorite chapters became my least favorite and vice versa (sadly), this was over all the best arc in my opinion.
It was a good story, but they cut out way too many scenes I loved making it not the best adaptation when it comes to comparing it with the manga. Season 3 is still my favorite season though.
FAVORITE EPISODE(S) FROM THIS COUR? 231 Responses
“Friends” was the most well-liked episode of the first half of the season, but overall the last four episodes performed the strongest. This is likely due to their more faithful adaptation of the manga material than than the earlier episodes. On that note, “Pain” did pretty well in regards to the earlier episodes.
First two episodes were meh (way too fast for my liking), then it got slightly better, but the last 4 episodes were amazing
that ending scene in ep 12, what the hell, that scared me so much but it was so well done! also that last scene before the ending song is great for hype lol, Erwin's (japanese) voice actor is a god, my god what a man, SUSUMEEE
RATE THE SOUNDTRACK 236 Responses
Tumblr media
It is probably safe to assume that the majority of respondents agree with the sentiment, “OST when!?” The soundtrack was great this season according to voters. Hopefully Sawano treats us soon!
It was so good and I really want the soundtrack to come out, I have 6 months to mentally prepare myself for the return to Shiganshina arc and I still won’t be ready
RATE THE ANIMATION 235 Responses
Tumblr media
Overall, reactions to the animation were positive. Although there were some scenes that had room for improvement, ultimately we can’t deny that the hard work done on the action sequences really paid off. Here’s hoping for even more glorious animation in the second half of the season!
HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT THE FOLLOWING KEY CHARACTERS BY THE END OF THE COUR?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We’ll let the results speak for themselves on this one. Levi, Historia, Erwin, Hange and Kenny drew the most positive feelings. Rod evoked the most negative feelings.
ARE YOU PLANNING TO WATCH THE NEXT COUR? 237 Responses
We’re happy to see that most of you guys will be around for more!
I feel like this section and onwards are not going to make for very entertaining episodes and are better in manga format, particularly if it's going to keep forcing major changes
HAVE YOU BEEN WATCHING THE DUB? 237 Responses
Tumblr media
The majority of respondents have not watched the dub and have no desire to do so. 16% will get around to it eventually and 14% are keeping on up on it.
IF SO, WHAT ARE YOUR OPINIONS OF THE DUB THIS SEASON? 211 Responses
Tumblr media
Aside from the 75% who haven’t been watching it, those who have are having an overall positive experience with it this season, regardless if the original Japanese is the preference or not!
This season has been an improvement both in voice acting and script, I've been pretty satisfied with it.
I'm not sure why people think animes need dubs tbh. They never sound good. Kenny's voice actor really butchered the cowboy voice.
I've only seen a few scenes but when Levi shouted ''Nifa!'' it sounded really weird in the dub xD
The very idea of watching dubbed anime is heresy
DO YOU THINK LINKED HORIZON WILL BE INVOLVED IN THE NEXT COUR? 233 Responses
Tumblr media
The majority are feeling pretty confident that Linked Horizon will be back again for part 2 with an exciting new opening for us! 16% are sure they will stick around, but we may not see them retake their role as the artist of the opening. A small sliver of respondents think that they will be absent.
OVERALL, DID YOU THINK THE ADAPTATION OF THE UPRISING ARC WAS DONE WELL? 237 Responses
Tumblr media
Just over half of respondents believed that the Uprising arc was adapted well overall. 28% felt it was a good story, but not a good adaptation - still enjoyable, but not close enough to the source material. Smaller percentages either preferred the anime’s retelling or, on the opposite end, believe that the adaptation wasn’t good in any way.
Í think a few parts would've been better if they had stuck to the source, but overall it was a good adaptation
It was horrible to be very honest, ehhhhh they ruined it
There were a few cuts and changes that didn't make sense or took away from the story but it wasn't too bad. I love Attack On Titan too much to be ungreatful lol.
At some points it was a better adaptation, with changes I liked, and at some points the attempts to fix some issues created some others. I'd say I find it about even with the manga, the pros and cons balance out.
I enjoyed it, and I loved the action animation in the first few episodes, but I'd still have preferred a more faithful adaptation.
First half was rushed, i like the manga version of it better, but the second half that went more like the manga was excellent
It could've been a teensy bit better, but glad they hit all the marks that were important (except for the hesitation of the 104th squad killing people)
It was a good story, but they cut out way too many scenes I loved making it not the best adaptation when it comes to comparing it with the manga. Season 3 is still my favorite season though.
Although the story was entertaining and was produced well, it missed a lot of key factors present in the manga that really brings it down. At the end you have a feeling of hollowness as opposed to satisfaction
OPINIONS OF THE ARC BEFORE THE ANIME? 238 Responses
Tumblr media
Prior to the anime adaptation, the majority of respondents were fond of this arc of the story. A few were indifferent or didn’t enjoy it, however.
I thought this arc was boring when I read it in the manga and it honestly wasn’t any better when it was animated.
AND AFTER? 237 Responses
Tumblr media
Opinions stayed about the same after the anime retelling, with just a small bump up in the “liked it” area.
I actually like the Uprising arc. So when the anime came up I expected it to be better. So for me this is a good adaptation. Plus I think half of the budget was spent on making Levi 100 time hotter... My only regret is that they didn't show Levi shirtless.
Uprising arc is my favorite in the manga. So many changes have driven me mad but in the end, I have rather enjoyed this cour. The chara design and the animation are insane. Feel robbed in many ways though, but never mind.
I felt like a lot of details that made the arc good in the manga was lost in the anime
HOW DID YOU FEEL ABOUT THE FOLLOWING MAJOR CHANGES?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While most stances were overall neutral on many of the changes, the most disliked change was taking away Levi forcing Historia to take the crown, thus unraveling subsequent events which eventually lead to the beloved punch/smile scene. The most well received change was including a proper Kenny vs. Levi fight scene in the cave.
I did disapprove of some removals and additions, because I felt that the way the manga structured it made the plot flow easily. For the anime, it felt a tad rushed with the fast stream of information given to the viewers.
Like many manga readers, my biggest and only really significant complaint was the removal of Levi's choking-and-speech moment. It was entirely crucial to both his and Historia's characterisation and future development.
I only liked two of the changes. Everything they did that stuck to the manga was really well done.
The fandom is happy because of the 2nd fight between them in the cave. That was the worst fight IMO: Kenny didn't learn anything from the first battle between them and decided to go against Levi again; he was babbling some nonsense, offended his nephew and as result - he almost got killed. So in other words - Kenny was shown as immature, dumb simpleton who despised his nephew and was pathetic fighter.
while different, i still think it was a good adaptation and none of the changes really bothered me too much.
An additional scene that I'm still upset they didn't include - the conversation between Nile and Erwin before Erwin's arrest, where they discuss their childhood together.
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS ON THE FIRST COUR?
A shame a bunch of the political parts were ''rushed'', but it was to be expected. Otherwise a good adaptation!
Decent adaptation that skimmed over the boring stuff. Too bad some scenes were hacked away.
"Okay, this is epic." - Ben Shapiro
I don't care that Isayama approved the changes and that the majority of people seemed to have enjoyed this arc more in anime form with the changes. I'm not an idiot, I know how adaptations work and that they're a different medium and that it wouldn't be a 100% panel by panel adaptation nor was I expecting it to be. Neither of the previous seasons were. But they removed and changed SO MUCH of what made the arc great and my favorite personally that I'll never get over that.
After a few fast paced episodes that were slightly Concerning™️ things slowed down and made a lot of sense. I’m glad that isayama got a chance to see uprising play out in the way he would have liked. And as far as changes, some were great, some were not awesome, but we always have the manga. Overall it was amazing and what will I do with my Sundays for the next six months rip
It was pretty calm, right before the storm of the next cour
First sighting of god tier character Floch
I feel like a fair bit of changes were made just to give the main/loved characters far more screentime, and some other changes to be simply dumb and entirely unnecessary
I wish they had just stayed true to the manga. It seems like they wanted to remove some of Levi's darker parts which makes him a less interesting character.
While it could have been better (less CGI!), it was phenomenal overall, and I believe guarantees that the Shiganshina arc is in good hands!
Rod's Titan was so gross. YUCK!
EEEEEEKKKKKK
10/10 there was a brief flashback of Mina Carolina in the Cave.
I'm still salty about some cuts but overall I liked it. Who will say no to Anime SNK?
For Yams story and characters are the most important, for the anime team - it's fun for watchers. That's a bit sad but okay.
Historias new coronation outfit was better than in the manga
I see the anime as an extra, so nothing that happens in the anime will change how I see certain characters or the arc itself. So I really had a problem answering your poll. In my eyes, it a gimmick, a nice animated extra but nothing more.
Despite not being a 1:1 adaptation of the manga, the anime still manages to do a fantastic job of adapting Uprising as well as altering it. The story and characters were still executed very well, and this arc overall had a MUCH better reception than its original counterpart which, in my opinion, says something.
