Above the marge of night a star still shines, And on the frosty hills the sombre pines Harbor an eerie wind that crooneth low Over the glimmering wastes of virgin snow.
Through the pale arch of orient the morn Comes in a milk-white splendor newly-born, A sword of crimson cuts in twain the gray Banners of shadow hosts, and lo, the day!
-Lucy Maud Montgomery
Happy New Year, my dear friends!! Much peace, love and joy to you all in 2024. Warm wishes for the new glorious year :-D
(Sorry for the late New Year's greetings. I've been suffering from a persistent cold since the end of the year🤧💦 Sore throat and cough were particularly heavy and there were times when I was unable to speak…😮💨However, my health is finally back to normal👍🏻✨)
IRL Japanese 2: Things the kids I teach say all the time
If you're planning to work as an ESL teacher in Japan working with kids, this vocab is gonna be super useful for you! You'll pick up a lot as you go along, but it's good to have an overview from the start.
できた = done, finished (whenever they finish an exercise I've set them. The older kids will use the ます-form, but kids under like age 8 will use this one)
かえる?= is it time to go home? (lit: go home?)
わかった = got it (again, the older kids will use the ます-form)
わからない / わかんない = I don't get it (idk if わかんない is just dialect or if it's common overall, but I hear it more than わからない. Usually from the kids who don't wanna be there and are making zero effort)
ちがう = wrong / different (when they give an answer but realise it's not correct. It's basically like "wait, no")
ばか = idiot (sometimes boys say this to their friends)
全部?(ぜんぶ)= everything?! (asked in disbelief when I ask them to write more than one word)
やめろ = stop it! (used with friends when they're teasing each other)
いたいよ = that actually hurts, you know! (used with friends when they're rough-housing)
よし (more like 'yoshhh') = right then (filler word indicating the start of an activity or a change of activity)
水筒(すいとう)= water bottle (most kids bring one to class and frequently forget to take them with them when they go home)
忘れた(わすれた)= I forgot (usually in reference to the text book they left at home)
トイレに行きたい = I want to go to the bathroom
先生、大好き!(せんせい、だいすき!)= I love you, Sensei!
Other useful classroom/school vocabulary:
サイコロ = dice
トランプ = playing cards
ごろごろ = onomatopeia for the sound for rolling (I found the kids got confused if I just mimed rolling a dice/ball and said "roll!" but if I did the gesture and said "gorogoro", they understood)
ビリビリ = onomatopeia for ripping (useful for when you have tear-apart crafts in class)
ケシケシ = onomatopeia for erasing something (useful when you try to explain to a kid they spelled something wrong. Because it's easier to just say "A kesh-kesh, E" than "Not A, E. Okay great you wrote E, but A needs to go. No no no not the whole word, just A. Oh my God. Okay. Let me write it and you copy.")
ちょっと = a little, soon, wait a little (useful if the kids are getting a bit antsy and ready to go home a bit too early/don't want to wait their turn. Don't use it with parents though!)
がんばれ = do your best / you can do it!
あぶない!= dangerous / look out! (useful if a kid unexpectedly runs in front of me while I'm carrying a table)
せえの!= Altogether now! (When I need the kids to repeat something after me)
だめだよ = Don't do that (for when the kids repeatedly do something I've asked them not to do)
少々お待ちください(しょうしょう おまち ください)= polite form of "please wait a moment". Useful if you have a parent talking to you and you need to go get something (e.g. a communication sheet for them to point at so you know what they're trying to say)
授業参観 (じゅぎょうさんかん) = parent observation (PO). A couple of times a year, parents are invited into the classroom to watch the lesson (absolutely not a thing in the UK, not sure about other countries). The past two months I've had POs at my various schools, and so the parents come to the door and ask me if it's PO week. I don't understand most of the question, but I can pick out this one word and a question particle and figure out what they're asking.
It's also obviously a good idea to learn vocabulary related to stationery (eraser, pencil, crayon, pen, notebook, textbook, pencil case etc) because kids forget/lose their stuff all the time and will inevitably ask you if they can borrow something.
This week’s initial tentative super rough/literal translations under the cut.

(*Note: This chapter title is as interesting as it is incomprehensible. "Yumeyume" is a word that means basically "more, extra, whatever it is but PLUS ULTRA," and "ganriki" is something of a meme Horikoshi loves and uses a lot in MHA that refers to eyes bright and extra detailed to the point of being distracting or over-defined. It can refer to the eyes or even just the "power within the eyes" or one's gaze. All together it's basically just some nebulous sort of concept of eyes that are bright/sharp with dreams or effort or toil or just EYES, BUT EXTRA.)

This time's title is based on the theme "I came to see you." I'm still having fun drawing all kinds of Madasaku! !
Drawing various people is also my purpose in life. We are fully supporting their love romance. I would be very happy if I could share this feeling with all my followers, everyone who always supports me, and all the Madasaku fans who stopped by to watch.
いつもありがとうございます!!!
I am always grateful for your help! ! !
I went to see the final chapter of the play in October and November. I had a great time here as well, and enjoyed the end of the story while searching for Madasaku involvement, and felt the ending to the fullest! ! We had a wonderful time. There was also a battle scene between Madara and Sakura-chan! ! The scene where he fights the main character Madara was heart-warming. Both strong feelings collide and I can't stop 😿. Sakura-chan, microphone trouble on the way? There was a certain scene, but they overwhelmed the stage with their passionate acting, facial expressions, and voices. I feel very sad thinking that it's the last time, but the actors posted off-shots and I was very relieved.
I want to see you again 🌸 Thank you so much! !
This is a little extra 💖It was an expensive purchase, but we finally welcomed it into our home. This Madara model is the best. Every angle is truly the original, and the finish is so good that you'll think it's the original work! ! I am happy to have worked so hard to finally welcome you. I will use it as a source of energy for drawing Madasaku in the future! ! Awesome quality! ! It's amazing! ! !
(I wonder if the same manufacturer could make Sakura-chan too…?🌸)
もう少しでマダラの誕生日ですね!!投稿できるか分かりません、
全力で当日はお祝いしたいと思います!!
Madara's birthday is almost here! ! I don't know if I can post it, but I would like to celebrate this day with all my might! !
皆様、お体を大切に。🌼
ありがとうございました!❄⛄
Everyone, please take care of yourselves. 🌼
thank you very much! ❄⛄
I wanted to share a translation of an excerpt from this Hunter x Hunter Characters Book, published in 2001.
Translation:
A Day in the Life of Killua
My own big prediction!
Although he has lived a life soaked in blood, Killua is probably no different from a normal 12-year-old. Let’s take a closer look at the life of Killua, who says he loves sweets!
10:00 Wake up
11:00 Gon arrives.
While I was dozing off in the morning, I hear Gon's voice inviting me to play with him. I’m embarrassed for some reason, so I hit him without thinking.
12:00 Play with Gon
14:00 Lunch
We have lunch while wandering around town. I feel it’s more fun to eat outside than in a restaurant.
15:00 Snack
16:00 Play some more
17:00 Discover Illumi.
While I was making a pit trap to trick Gon, somehow I found Illumi. I dash away like I'm about to die, and calm myself down.
17:05 Buy Chocobo
19:00 Dinner
20:00 Go to Gon's room
22:00 Go to bed in Gon's room
While talking with Gon about what we did in town, it gets to be late at night. It’s too much trouble to go back to my room, so I go to bed next to Gon.
A word from Killua
You're totally wrong! Why do I keep eating sweets all the time? And why is my brother Illumi buried in the garden? You're making fun of me!?
Japanese Transcript:
(Just because I went through the trouble to transcribe it, and in case anyone wants to do their own translations!)
Another thing I want to note about this book is that it has a full story in it, which you can find translated here! It's an interesting read in general--it's based off episode 46 of the 1999 anime, which deviates from the manga and has its own original story, and this story then expands upon that original story. One thing I think is especially interesting is the story starts off with Gon and Killua sleeping in the same bed, so this book makes two separate mentions of that being something they do, which is cute. ❤️
While Togashi didn't write the story himself or likely the contents of this book, he did write an afterword to it, so I'm guessing he must have at the very least read it over and approved of the contents before it was published, and it's certainly possible he had more involvement than that as well. Take the canon status of it all with a grain of salt, I'd say it's more semi-canon/a different version of canon than 100% canon to the manga (similar to how I consider the 1999 anime additions/changes as well), but it's interesting nonetheless and fun as far as shipping fuel goes!
All Fanny Win & Lose Quotes Translated (Guilty Gear Petit)
As the title says, this will be a translations of all* Win & Lose quotes involving Fanny from Guilty Petit and Guilty Gear Petit 2.
(*Except for the mirror match quote, if one exists, because it looks like you can’t get a proper mirror match in single player.)
I thought these would be interesting to know about, since they’re pretty much the only characterization Fanny gets outside of the Petit 1&2 story modes, plus getting to see a bit of how the other characters react to her.
--
Some more things to note before we get started:
Characters who appear in both Petit 1 and 2 have identical Win and Loss quotes in both games.
The final roster also includes four “GG” characters: GG Sol Badguy, GG May, GG Millia Rage, and GG Ky Kiske.
These four characters are essentially their base form counterparts, but with an alternate moveset inspired by the first Guilty Gear game. They are given different color schemes to differentiate them in gameplay, but they are effectively treated like they are the same characters, even though they have separate quotes and story modes.
The only exception is GG Ky Kiske, who is actually Robo-Ky!
Finally, in terms of status-quo, the characters are roughly plucked from around the Guilty Gear X era - for example Dizzy is part of the Jellyfish Pirates, but Zato-1 hasn’t fully passed away yet (but is still controlled by Eddie.)
Though the stories of these games are really more on the humorous side.
Now, onto the actual translations!

Fanny Win Quotes
(These are the quotes Fanny herself says when defeating these characters.)
Sol Badguy:
せんせいは、かんじゃさんに リラックス
してもらおうと おもっているからこそ
あんなにユーモアにあふれているのです。
The doctor wants to help his patients relax,
that's why he's so full of humor.
Ky Kiske:

ウィットにとんだせかいさいこうのめいい、

Excuse me? Do you happen to know about the tall, suave, witty,
and overall greatest doctor in the entire world?
May:
せんせいはえいせいてきにかんがえて、
あたまをそっていらっしゃるのです。
…たぶん。
The doctor shaves his head
for hygienic purposes.
…I think.
Millia Rage:
ねんのため くすり だしておきますね。
I'm giving you some medicine, just in case.
Potemkin:
わたしのオデコのほうが
かたかったみたいです。
Looks like my forehead is harder.
Kuradoberi Jam:
せんせいのようしですか?
あしがながくて くびもながい
ひかりかがやいているかたですわ。
What does the doctor look like?
He has long legs, and a long neck,
and he's just a positively radiant person.
Mito Anji:
せんせいもあなたのように
ステキなめがねをしてらしたのよ。
The doctor was also wearing
lovely glasses, just like you.
Johnny:
ステキなけんさばきでしたわ、
でも せんせいにはかないませんわね。
That was some fine swordplay,
but you still can't hold a candle to the doctor.
Faust:
ああっ、せんせい…
どこにいってしまわれたのでしょうか?
Oh, Doctor…
Where could you have gone?
Chipp Zanuff:
ぜひ けんけつをおねがいします。
きっと ちが おおすぎるのですわ。
Please consider donating blood.
I'm sure you have too much of it.
Axl Low:
ごめんなさい、わたしは「はくいのてんし」
わたしのあいは みなさんびょうどうですの。
I'm sorry, but I'm a "white angel"-
I love everyone equally.
(Translator's Note: “はくいのてんし/hakui no tenshi”, meaning “white angel” is a non-official term sometimes used for nurses in Japanese, as far as I can tell. As far as I’ve heard, this term might’ve come from the legacy of Florence Nightingale, particularly the 1937 movie based around her life called “The White Angel”. Obviously likening nurses to angels is a thing in English too, but I still wanted to explain the details here.)
Zato-1 (Eddie):
あなたぜひ
せんせいのオペを うけるべきですわ!
You should absolutely
get surgery from the doctor!
Testament:
せいしんあんていざいを うっておきました。
もうだいじょうぶ!
I have given you sedatives.
Everything will be fine now!
GG Sol Badguy:
せんせいのすばらしさがわからないんですか?
おきのどくに。
Don't you know just how wonderful the doctor is?
How unfortunate.
GG May:
せんせいは「ハゲ」ではありません!
「ボウズ」ですわ!!
The doctor is NOT bald!
He just shaves!!
GG Millia Rage:
あなたのこころのキズ、はやく

Fanny Defeated Quotes
(These are the quotes these characters say to Fanny when they defeat her.)
Sol Badguy:
かんごふってのは、みな、こうだったか?
Are all nurses like this?
Ky Kiske:
かんごふ というのもまた
からだをはる しごとなのですね。
I suppose being a nurse, too, is quite
the physically demanding line of work.
May:
ボクもずっと すきなひと
さがしてたからわかるよ。そのきもち。
I'm always chasing after someone I like, too.
So I get how you feel.
Millia Rage:
さいきん えだげが ひどいのよね。
いいくすりしらない?
I've been having awful split ends lately.
Do you know any remedy for that?
Potemkin:
ずいぶん かわった たたかいだったな…
That sure was a strange battle…
Kuradoberi Jam:
ちょっと、やりすぎたアル…って
ねてるアルか?
Whoops, I think I overdid it…
Wait- Are you asleep?
Mito Anji:
「まてば かいろのひよりあり」ってね
がんばって さがしな
"Good things come to those who wait", you know.
So hang in there and keep on searching, alright?
(Translator's Note: What Anji says in the first line is a Japanese idiom that would literally translate to “waiting for fair weather at a sea route”, in case you’re curious. But it does essentially mean “Good things come to those who can wait.”)
Johnny:
とう「ジェリーフィッシュかいぞくだん」では
チャーミングなナース ぼしゅうちゅうだ
むかしのおとこ わすれさせてやるぜ?
The Jellyfish Pirates are looking to hire
a charming nurse right now, so what d'ya say?
I'll make you forget all about that other guy.
Faust:
「いりょうのみちは いちにちしてならず。」
かんじゃへの あいのみに いきるべきです。
"The path of medicine isn't forged in a day."
You should live only for your love towards your patients.
Chipp Zanuff:
へんなねーちゃんだな?
おれはどこもけがしちゃいねーけどな。
What's with this chick?
I wasn't even hurt anywhere.
Axl Low:
「はくいのてんし」はすきだけど
もうちょっと おとなしいほうがすきだぜ?
I do like "white angels", but…
I'd like it even better if you were a bit more gentle, eh?
Zato-1 (Eddie):
モウオソイワ
コイツトオレハキリハナセンヨ。
YOU ARE TOO LATE.
HE AND I CANNOT BE SEPERATED.
Testament:
わたしに いりょうなど ひつようない。
I have no need for medical care.
GG Sol Badguy:
かんごふがくるとこじゃねぇぜ、ここは。
This is no place for a nurse.
GG May:
さいきんのかんごふって
ずいぶん つよいのね?
Nurses are pretty
tough these days, huh?
GG Millia Rage:
ボーっとしてるから…。
That's what you get for spacing out…
GG Ky Kiske (Robo-Ky):
カカカンゴフ トトトトイウノモモモマタ
カカカラダヲハル ㇱ、シゴトナノデスネネ。
I- I- I SUPPOSE BEING A- A- A- A- A NURSE, T-T-TOO, IS QUITE
T-T-T-THE PHYSICALLY D-DEMANDING LINE OF WORK-K.
I love this song, and the choreo is fucking crazy. I'll attempt to explain some of the decisions I made in the translation below the cut!
First a little explanation about this song. I have been thinking about my gender for a few years now, and I recently had a few conversations that have made me realise I'm probably agender. My partner showed me this song at the peak of when I was thinking about it the most (she didn't know at the time), and I was shocked at how relevant the lyrics were to my thought process and especially to our relationship. This song means a lot to me, and I felt like I just had to translate it.
Anyway, let's talk translation. I've had a look at some other translations, and mine slightly differs in that I feel I've attempted to convey the core message of the song more strongly than the others. For example:
陰キャ陽キャ
"What's your MBTI?"
This line could be translated to something literal like "are you cheerful or gloomy" but I felt it was better to use an english-world equivalent of a popular system of putting people into boxes. Also worth noting that this line is extremely short, and my subtitling software warns you when the amount of time the subtitle appears for is too short, based on how many letters are in it. The translation needed to be like, 3 short words. I'm honestly pretty happy with this, I think it fits well and introduces the premise of the song well.
気付かない本能の外側を 覗いていかない? 気分が乗らない?
Nice dichotomy idiot, what exists outside it? Wanna take a peek? Not in the mood?
Ok, obviously this isn't a direct translation, but I love that post and this song is basically "nice dichotomy idiot" the song, so I really wanted to work it in somewhere. A literal translation would be like "Won't you peek outside your subconscious instincts?" and I had trouble making that sound song-y in english until I decided to work in the meme.
やってるのにイケないヤツ
and the ones using skills they don’t have
The Japanese here is a bit of a double entendre. It could be translated to "people doing stuff who really shouldn't be doing that" (いけない being kind of equivalent to ダメ in such an interpretation), but it could also mean "people who are fucking but can't cum". I tried really hard to work in similar sexual imagery ("the ones who go but don't come"??) but it just didn't work and in the end I just made it mirror the preceding line.
I almost want to say that was the hardest line in the song but that award has to go to this:
Most adults won’t admit it, but what the hell,
Lecturing is such a guilty pleasure
This, plus a drink - that's heaven
And if this gets you to grow up?
Making this catchy and natural was really tough. I actually stole a bit of the first line from another translation because I liked the way they handled the 大人の俺 part. 酒の肴にすりゃ is also a difficult thing to translate - in the English speaking world we don't really have this idea that food needs to accompany a drink.
But the line I'm most happy with is this:
すぐ世の中金だとか愛だとか運だとか縁だとか
なぜ2文字で片付けちゃうの?
It’s all about cash, or love, or luck, or fate
How neat, summing up the world in 4 letters.
This wasn't a particularly hard translation to come up with ("love" and "luck" are basically the only translations for those words which locked in "4 letters", and it wasn't hard to find 4 letter words for 金 and 縁), but I was surprised to find that none of the existing translations I could find did this. One went with "Why do you want to wrap it all up with a single word?" and another even further abstracted, "How can it be so simple?"
I hope you enjoyed the song/translation! Let me know if you would have translated something differently or if I've made a mistake, I really love seeing your responses!
