Kaiju Week in Review (March 3-9, 2024)

Shin Ultraman took an eternity to reach home video, but Godzilla Minus One will proceed as a more reasonable pace (by Japanese standards). Toho will release roughly one billion different editions on May 1, with Amazon- and Godzilla Store-exclusive physical bonuses both on offer. Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color is included with some of the pricier versions, or you can buy it as a standalone Blu-ray or DVD.

The black-and-white version of Shin Godzilla, SHIN GODZILLA:ORTHOchromatic, also hits Japanese home video on May 1. Like Minus Color, no 4K edition, just Blu-ray and DVD. A handful of new bonus features about ORTHOchromatic are included.

As is standard for Toho, none of these releases will be English-friendly. But given the films' popularity (and the lack of any legal way to watch Minus One since it left theaters), expect bootlegs to circulate at light speed.

Unsurprisingly, Godzilla Minus One cleaned up at the Japanese Academy Awards, with eight victories out of eleven nominations: Picture of the Year, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Sound, Best Art Direction, and Best Lighting. That's one more than Shin Godzilla, and pretty much guarantees that the Toho Godzilla series will keep the prestige pictures coming. Strange times!

We'll see if Minus One can also capture Best Visual Effects at the American Academy Awards tonight. The Creator remains its biggest competition. The Gareth Edwards film is better-positioned by the usual metrics, with a second nomination for Best Sound and five wins at the Visual Effects Society Awards, but the enthusiasm gap for the films themselves may prove decisive. I'll be doing a much lengthier analysis during Wikizilla's Oscar stream tonight, which will start at about 6:00 PM ET, an hour before the ceremony begins.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire tickets may not be on sale yet, but Cinemark theaters have rolled out the above merch (much more efficiently than Target and Walmart have rolled out the toyline, if my local theater's any indication). I have a suspicion those plushies will be worth a mint a few years from now, small as they are; don't know about the other stuff. I bought the larger popcorn tin when I saw Dune: Part Two on Thursday. The promo image is deceptive, as the green area is transparent plastic and the Titan image is on the opposite wall of the tin, so that popcorn's either defying gravity or being held up by a hidden insert. There are Kong and Skar King variants as well, the latter revealing his height (318 feet). Poor Shimo; being the "secret" villain really narrows the amount of merch you get.

The other interesting GxK news this week (apart from the endless TV spot variants, which I'm not even trying to keep track of) is a collaboration with the American Red Cross, of all institutions. Donate blood, platelets, or AB Elite plasma from March 25 to April 7, get a free T-shirt. And for completion's sake, I'll mention the Roblox and Call of Duty cross-promos too.

Chibi Godzilla Raids Again, an unexpected delight last year, is getting a second season starting April 3. The official site revealed that Minilla is joining the cast, while those silhouettes to his right look like Titanosaurus (unjustly neglected in recent years), Gigan, and Gabara. Expect to follow the first season in being uploaded to the GODZILLA OFFICIAL by TOHO YouTube channel with English subtitles.

Here's another chance to watch Tsuburaya and Toei Animation's Kaiju Decode short, originally released in 2021. (It goes away at the end of the month, because every Japanese studio is apparently hellbent on making short films ephemeral, so download it now.) It's the basis for a recent mixed reality game for the Meta Quest 3 and Meta Quest Pro, hence its return to the spotlight.

UniVersus, a collectable card game predicated on pitting characters from various franchises against each other, is going all in on Godzilla after offering a couple of Minus One cards through highly convoluted means last year. They're releasing a couple of Godzilla Challenger Series (preconstructed decks) on June 21, one based around Godzilla and Mothra, the other around King Ghidorah and Rodan, with Mechagodzilla thrown into the mix for both. I've never played this game in my life, but the prospect of a shiny Godzilla card with James Stokoe art is sort of tempting.

Each step feels clumsy, sluggish, a second behind. Unscripted. Off-book. The water brushes up over your foot for a moment, sand sticking uncomfortably to what you think is probably your skin now. Do you have skin anymore? You miss your shoes. Would it be weird to wear shoes now? To find new clothes? You want to drape yourself in fabrics, smother every inch of that glowing light you can never seem to shut out until your body is finally dull and darkened and done. You wonder what happened to all your old clothes. They probably burned up with your face. Your name. Your home. There’s nowhere left for you, is there?

Half of this theory's been around for ages I'm just adding more but

Is this anything. I know the theory of Toni Kensa (which could easily be short/nickname for Tataki Kensaki, making both canon) and the Squid Sisters being related but.

Is it any coincidence that one of the promo characters literally has the exact same name with the exact same spelling and coincidentally is seen using. A charger (Marie's weapon) in the Direct he was first seen in. I'm gonna call him Saki with this because what else can I do when he refuses to tell me if it's his last name or not

I'm already going too far with this but there's also the fact that he primarily wears greyscaled colours (cough Toni Kensa before the Kensa brand existed). And I've heard people say the hipster cut is a budget Marie cut before. So that's A Thing.

I don't know what's going on and we haven't seen Saki in five years anyway so I don't know why I'm theorising now but I just find it weird that. The family crest on Marie's kimono, Toni Kensa, and now some random kid all share the same name. Especially since S2's main story mode puts this emphasis on family (Callie & Marie). And the fact that everyone who's ever modelled for Kensa has used black ink, implying that Kensa himself probably has black tentacles (like Callie does) or even white ones (like Marie.) and the greyscaled tentacles could easily be a family thing that just happens as you get older. Especially with the family thing since we know it doesn't happen to everyone (Captain 3 doesnt have greyscaled tentacles despite being older now than the Squid Sisters were in S1.) If it's true then that would mean the greyscaling happens around at least 17 years, which explains why S2 Saki has regular colours because he'd be 15-16 at the time (S2 protagonists are two years older than S1 protagonists are.) (I just realised my logic on that one is way off base and they'd actually be around eighteen by S2 but roll with me here. It still works, he'd just be a late bloomer.)

Anyhoo ive been high on this theory for like an entire day now but suffice to say. (1) Saki should've been the protagonist of S2 (2) in my head it's canon that the Squid Sisters, Saki and Toni Kensa are cousins (3) wait that kinda fits because the gaudy pair of black bracelets on Saki's shirt feel very Kensa (4) I'm going insane help.

Having said that, if it is canon that raises the question why didn't Marie directly ask Saki for help with Callie- but she could very well have not wanted to worry him or put him in danger, especially since S2 was kinda his time in the spotlight as a turf war player, especially since that's the one point in the timeline where neither the Squid Sisters nor Toni Kensa were getting attention. Now that I think about it, there's no real confirmation that Cuttlefish's family stopped with Callie and Marie's parents, and them two respectively. For all we know, Saki is Marie's little brother or something like that. For all we know there could even be four cousins to the Kensaki clan instead of the two Squid Sisters.

I'm gonna write a fic based on this actually. Do y'all wanna hear more of my crack theories about the promo kids because I also have one highlighting the fact that (a.) Tof-U and Kensaki seem to be opposing each other a lot (second in command to their leaders and/or killing each other midmatch) and also the fact that Half-Rim and N-Pacer are literally what happens if you give them fanchildren

Q: Where can we find you and your stories?

A: @arianatwycross, AO3

Q: How would you describe your writing style?

A: I really couldn’t tell you! It really depends on how I’m feeling. I suppose you could say I love dialogue and you can definitely find a lot of sexual tension or flirting in my fics.

Q: How do you come up with ideas for your writing?

A: A lot of the time it's through songs e.g. Teenage Kicks, but I also read quite a lot, so I get inspiration from books. For example, sometimes when I’m reading, I find a certain line I love and then that prompts an entire storyline in my head. Sometimes it’s just a feeling or a moment. With you are the sun, I was pining for hot summer Australian days (it was depressingly winter) and I had just finished reading Conversations with Friends. There’s this one scene where he uses a beer bottle to cool her down and I couldn’t help but write that scene with Jily. The prompt then rolled into a three-part story with a lot of sweaty, humid, hot synonyms.

Q: When and why did you begin writing fanfiction?

A: I think I started in 2021 during COVID. COVID got me back to a lot of my hobbies that I dropped for a while. I started listening to music again, reading a lot more, and going for a lot of walks (in which I ended up just making up stories in my head). My friend sent me some fanfic to read (I think it was a Fred Wesley fic haha) and then I got back onto Tumblr and stumbled onto the love of our lives, Jily ❤️‍

Q: What’s one thing you’d tell someone who is considering reading one of your fics?

A: Prepare for a lot of flirty fluff and smut ;)

Q: What are some of your favorite Jily tropes?

A: Friends to lovers, secret relationships, idiots in love - anything that makes them look like idiots that love each other to be honest!

Q: What do you like most about the Jily fandom?

A: How diverse it is! You can literally have a thirst for any type of trope and find it, and the quality of writing is chef’s kiss! Most importantly, everyone I’ve talked to has also been really sweet and supportive, which is the backbone of this fandom.

Q: Pick a favourite Marauders era character.

A: Apart from James and Lily, I love Sirius Black - he’s such a complex character. I suppose as a fandom, he’s one of the only Marauders that we know enough about to establish his personality but I still feel like there’s so many complexities behind how he treated Harry and his time in azkaban. I would LOVE to really know his relationship with Lily as well.

Q: Self-promo time! List the fics that you are most proud of writing.

Teenage Kicks – It all starts with Lily being hired to be the bands tour photographer, then she actually meets the band and she quickly becomes absorbed by their fast lifestyle, their pranks and the hot lead singer. But its not exactly simple to be crushing on a famous Rockstar, is it?

Strawberry Lipstick – After spending her 6th year in a state of depression after her mothers death and her sister’s rejection, Lily finds herself changing into the person she thought she wanted to be over the summer before her last year at Hogwarts. Coming back to Hogwarts as Head girl, Lily shocks James as she walks onto the train with a sense of confidence she hadn't had in years. Her head held high, and a devilish smirk that makes James shiver. (Probably needs a desperate edit as this was my first foray into writing my own fanfiction but it’s my first so there’s a deep love for it!)

you are the sun – She feels someone brush a piece of her hair behind her ear, a flyaway from her messy ponytail. She turns to her side to find Daniel smiling sweetly at her, he leans over to grab his beer from the table before lounging back in his chair. She stares dumbly for a few seconds, before her eyes hesitantly reach the man opposite her. James is staring openly at her, one eyebrow raised in question. She tries her best to stop a smile gracing her lips but she loses miserably.

Q: Fic rec time! Could you recommend a few of your favourite Jily fics?

Everlong by @emeralddoeadeer – The intricacies of this story really suck you in and oh my, I fell in love straight away.

The Reckless Now by @mppmaraudergirl – A love square that had me on my toes!

Choose Your Own (sexy) Adventure by @ghostofbambifanfiction – The dialogue in this is unmatched and it’s all through email/texting - unparalleled humour.

Black Doom (Written by Phantom Slaughter of WORM)

For as long as I can remember, I have always favored a slower to mid-tempo black metal. Perhaps I should say I have a strong attraction to glacial paced music in general. To me, it leaves much more room for depth with an almost larger than life atmosphere and dread. My first experience with this macabre sound would have to be with Hellhammer/Celtic Frost. My favorite First Wave BM entity. While Bathory and Venom are mainly chaotic, most of Tom G. Warrior's riffs seem to be directly influenced by early Sabbath. (Honorable mention would be Poison from Germany). I mean just listen to the opening riff of "Dawn of Megiddo"! If that ain't doom, I don't know what is. Or the lead heavy bends on "Procreated (of the Wicked)". This is why I must cite them as the starting point and birth of black doom.

As I furthered my research, I soon stopped at two albums which are a huge influence on Worm's first full-length, "Evocation of the Black Marsh". Goatlord's "Reflections of the Solstice" and Samael's "Worship Him". This had that same doom foundation but added way harsher vocals than what I had heard previously. I still get shivers down my spine when I hear "Into the Pentagram". Speaking of influences for Worm, it would be a crime to not name this next band. They started out as one of Finland's first BM bands under the name Holy Hell but soon their Procession of Black Doom became fully realized as Unholy! "The Second Ring of Power" would have to be my favorite album by these cloaked shamans. While we are in Finland, I would also like to mention some equally important releases. Barathrum's "Witchmaster/Hailstorm" as well as Dolorian's "When All the Laughter Has Gone".

We must now move onto Norway for a black doom band I feel is extremely underrated. Svartsyn with their only release "Aandens Melankoli". Anyone who is into funeral doom like Skepticism/Shape of Despair/Thergothon/Worship should feel right at home with this album. Another Norwegian connection would be Carpathian Forest's demo "Bloodlust and Perversion". The track "Return of the Freezing Winds" has those same Celtic Frost bends I dig so much. Let's not forget my favorite Darkthrone song "The Hordes of Nebulah".

Surprisingly enough, one of the richest scenes for this sub-genre would be Poland. Some speculate this due to the classic Samael tour which influenced many local bands. One of the earliest bands in this scene would be Xantotol, but I believe the true Polish standouts to be a tie between two records. Themgoroth's "Gate to the Unknown", and Taranis's "Faust". Both extremely gloomy and melancholic masterpieces.

I'd like to end this chapter of blackened sludge with some albums that are currently spinning in the Fantomlodge and quite possibly ones that are influencing the latest Worm material. This may be a controversial statement but I believe Katatonia's "Dance of December Souls" to be 100% black doom. If you think Katatonia has nothing to do with black metal, ya should go check the promo photos of "Jhva Elohim Meth". I'd like to piss off some more stuck up purists by adding Bethlehem's "Dictius te Necare", Argentum's "Ad Infinitum Funebrarum", and Salem's "Creating Our Sins/Kaddish". In a time where it seems like the modern underground scene is beginning to put a spotlight on death doom, it's very important to also show some love to its even more obscure evil twin brother BLACK DOOOM!

Anti-climactic finish, I know.

Most of the backers came from non-referral links, so I am assuming Crowdfundr's launch e-mail (-200 recipients), other backers' and peers' organic sharing, and perhaps the Tabletop Non-Stop event spotlight by Crowdfundr.

Conclusions?

Hard to tell. My product (and platform) is very niche, and my avenues of reaching people are peculiar to me.

But from what I can tell, e-mail is still king. And (all the) Twitter(s) is (are) hardly worth the effort.

Tumblr and Reddit surprised me.

Again, that is a very particular result to this kind of product, my kind of strategy (or lack thereof), my audience and so on. YMMV.

Just thought I would share because I believe the indie space thrives with transparency and shared experiences. :)

I honestly think Simon really wanted to push Liam originally but Harry and Niall had more charisma and presence, Zayn had better vocals and Louis was the behind the scenes person writing songs and managing things (tho he also had more charisma in interviews). Liam kinda ended up more in the background as the "basic" one.

You can even see the shift from the first album being so Liam focused to the second one. Niall and Louis didn't even get to really sing till Take Me Home.

It was Nicole who saw the potential in Niall and Harry, because she saw the charm and presence they could bring. Liam was there to do the actual singing, once the others could also sing the part Liam wasn't as center focus because he lacked the elements the other boys had.

Honestly if Zayn didn't have such bad anxiety he could probably be as successful as Harry. But I think he's happier chilling with his family and releasing music whenever he wants without promoting it or anything, he's already rich so I don't think he needs the money anyway.

Niall had a great album with Heartbreak Weather but he stopped promo once covid hit and it was sad because the songs on that album are great. What I love the most is that while all the boys in 1D were just learning how to sing Niall immediately started picking up other music skills like the guitar, it was Niall that later started teaching Harry how to play. That's I think part of what makes Niall so great he's always trying to get better and learning from other people, and he never releases anything unless he thinks is good enough.

Louis is so talented behind the scenes. He wrote most if not all of 1Ds greatest hits, he honestly had the strongest behind the scenes presence. He isn't as comfortable singing or performing but he's such a chill lad, his concerts are like hanging out with a friend that happens to know how to sing and is on a stage. He's also such a gem in telling fans to pirate his stuff if they can't afford it and lowering ticket prices to the minimum lol. Precious boyo.

And there's Liam who has struggled a lot with wanting to be the Justin Timberlake of one direction but never got there. He was in theory the perfect one to succeed with the singing and dancing... and yet. He also has a lot of personal struggles that bleed into his professional life but that's not our business. I think specially early on he felt like he was owed the success, but he just didn't have that It thing.

Harry always had the star quality, that boy was eating the stage up since he was sixteen. He was made for the stage. They can say whatever they want but all 1D fans knew Harry was going to have the best solo career. He just has the full star package.

God I've been in this fandom too long. I talk about stuff like this with my friends all the time, we kinda ended up agreeing that Liam had the basic voice of 1D and all the other boys added the flavour to it. Now that they all have solo careers the other boys developed their unique flavours but Liam just feels basic and generic. I feel cruel saying it but it's how i see it.

omg i strongly agree - we know liam was simon’s favourite. but i think nicole, being a woman, was able to see who would be more popular with teenage girls (aka their target demographic).

zayn is soo talented but yeah, i don’t think he enjoys the spotlight which is fair. i am still SO heartbroken about heartbreak weather, it’s an amazing album and deserves more :( but that’s a good observation about niall- he’s always pushed himself to learn and do better. and i loove louis, he’s so grounded and down to earth, he may not have the best voice but like you said, he does a lot of behind the scenes stuff. i honestly think liam needs a break to get himself together bc he’s been a mess for years now :// and yeah we all knew harry would do the best. liam does have the most basic voice haha and there’s nothing that sets him apart which is a shame, and one of the main reasons why he hasn’t done well

You know what I don't understand in all of this is the contradictory behaviour. Let me put it simply.

Why does Taehyung need this kind of PR to drive engagement when he is successful without this kind of buzz? Before you say why not? There is a difference between Kpop and western artists. For short term this may work wonders but the way people look at BTS is so different than how they look upto other artists. Is it worth it to lose your credibility/trust for short term engagement? Has other members not successful enough without all this?

Second, assuming he is a queer and wants to hide rumour about that. So staging a straight relationship cool. Then why does he drop so many hints about LGBTQ comm. I am not saying he has no right to share and show how he feels but I am wondering if he and company thinks his gay rumours are getting out of hand (though I didn't hear anything) then it's better to tone down then to take this kind of step.

Someone said this way he and Jungkook would be able to roam freely. I sometimes feels would it be alright to humiliate people who supported them from so many years because you believe it or not taekookers are going to get bashed more after these rumours. I mean it's okay people have choice to leave or to stay but there would come a time when taekook might need support to come out if ever. That would be a huge hurdle if this kind of nonsense prevails.

I don't know if I am able to explain my issue. I am attached to BTS not because they are great singer and stuff. Objectively, there are artists who sing better. Beyond artistry BTS has connection with their fans because they resonate with people. There is that one particular quality every member has that people connect with. In case of Taehyung, at least for me, is his doing what comes from heart and his principles. This pr trust is against everything which connects me from him. I still love his songs, i'll still hype him but I am not sure if I'll ever be able to connect with him.

It's okay when he is solo but with BTS as a group this might make him a black sheep. No being in a relationship is not the problem. Problem is how this situation is being handled. It's like if it's real relationship damn he really let people to drag his gf and if it's not well he had to resort to such activities.

This maybe for Western market but we shouldn't forget he still resides in Korea. Korean people and armys are going to be priority when it comes to consensus. This norm in west may not percolate so well in Korea.

I'm going to cut your ask in pieces a bit to respond properly.

This era is new territory isn't it. The way I see it, other members don't have a highly rumored in-band-relationship, accept for Jimin... but he was very much paired with Yoongi and J-hope. I know people hate to read this, but that too was part of promo. Not that their bonds aren't real, but it was also used for promo. I suspect by the time Tae and Jk's album release it is possible that Jimin will either have left for enlistment, or he'll be about to, and therefore he will not be there to do much promo support for Tae and Jk. Which leaves Tae and Jk, but we all know what speculations will arise from that. Having a short term solution (which I do thing is what we are looking at from now on) like Taennie, will ensure less queer speculations, but will also put Tae in the spotlight.

I know Tae is already huge and I can understand why people think he doesn't need the promo. But what if his wish is to get even bigger? What if it's his wish to be big everywhere? Is that too gready? No, he's an artist.. he wants to share his art widely. There is an apparent difference between Kpop and western artists, but isn't it possible that the gap is tightening? That Kpop (especially BTS and BlackPink) are crossing the line? Haven't they already done things that aren't traditionally Kpop? Is it a bad thing? Breaking traditions or perceived boundaries is always at first looked upon as 'weird', "unlikely', 'bad', 'untrustworthy', but without breaking those boundaries society would stand still and that is never a good thing. Tae doing something new is a credit to him wanting to break through some stuff he feels is outdated. This goes for if Taennie is true as well as if it's not true.

Why would Tae lose credibility you think? I think most, especially in SK, will believe Taennie is real. So they won't think he's lying. Those who think it's fake probably understand why things have taken this turn. Pr-stunts are meant to look believable, so even though I speak of it the way I do, that is not how media and the greater public will speak of it.

It will be short lived, because Tae will leave for enlistment next year probably. When he returns this will all have blown over.

Who is humiliating who? I don't feel humiliated. It is not Tae's intention to make us believe in Taekook. I do because I pick up on subtleties, not because they are being so obvious about it. The way I see it is Tae is making decisions for himself, and by extension Jk maybe. I trust him. I feel things will settle down soon and people will get to understand more of what's happening. This new turn is only fresh right now, so we aren't exactlly capable of seeing how things are going to be fandomwise. People who say they are leaving might be be back again next week.

Your feelings about this are your own, and you have a right to them. I can understand why Tae doing something new might make you feel disconnected. But keep in mind, that no matter what... an artist/person always has the right to do what he feels best. Even if that goes against what his fandom expect of him. It is just as much your right to leave him because you no longer feel connected.

I agree that the situation is being handled poorly. I strongly believe that if Taennie were real he wouldn't have let people drag Jennie through the mud and back. Tae speaks up about things. Imo he would've said something.

The whole issue is, that Tae possibly being queer does already not percolate well in Korea. It's a very difficult thing for anyone to be queer in Korea, let alone what it means to be a queer Idol. I think what people need to realise (aside from this being about Tae) is that when someone is queer but also closeted, that person would still have the urge to show who they are, what they like, what they are proud of. This absolutely goes for artists, who in general are prone to share themselves through their art. Bein queer in South Korea means you cannot do that. So if this Taennie situation is not only for promo, but also a cover for him being possibly queer... it will allow him some freedoms. And can we really expect someone to adhere to their closet jst because it doesn't percolate well in Korea?

It is complicated matter. And we could probably write a book about it... I think I might be half way by now even ;)

A poet I know sent me her latest verse. The subject was homelessness. I replied to her with a compliment and a link to one of my blogs on the topic. Days later, she sent me four lines that I thought were lovely. About to send her a second compliment, I paused. A distant memory flickered. The lines were familiar. Had I remarked on them before? Moments later, I recognized the words were mine. The poet had honored me with a quote from my blog. Happily, my recollection prevented me from committing the hubris of praising my work. Information is crucial if we are to make wise decisions. Recognizing that old essay of mine kept me from appearing prideful. Yet, the pitfalls of human error are everywhere. For a writer, they are as plentiful as lint. Who to trust for marketing advice is an example. The consensus among my peers is to avoid book promoters altogether. Still, a harried author is tempted to seek help. Certainly, ads from marketers make lavish promises. But can they deliver? Through word-of-mouth, I’ve garnered a few names of legitimate companies. So far, all the recommendations have come with a disclaimer. “I’ve never used the service, myself.” That being the case, how do I separate the wheat from the chaff? Baffled, I turned to someone who exposes scams of a literary nature. I was interested in an agency that glittered with promise. Her response arrived within a few days. I share them below in the hope they will benefit others. I haven’t gotten any complaints about this service. But I’m skeptical of its claims (as I am of most non-personalized marketing services). Most of its promotions are dependent on its following, and without data about that–not just numbers, but whether these are actual subscribers or emails harvested from the internet–you have no way to know what kind of audience it has and whether any of its promos might be effective. For instance, its Facebook group has 14.7K members, which sounds impressive, but if you look at the posts, it’s mostly authors promoting their own books in posts with low to zero engagement. Social media advertising is a crap shoot, even for people with large followings of their own. If you do decide to give this a try, start small with a low-cost service and see what happens. It advertises a Twitter ad service and claims over 700,000 followers, but I can’t find that it has a Twitter account. There’s a #[name deleted] hashtag, but that’s not the same thing. Given her response, I tried sleuthing on m;y own. The company was new, yet I was able to google comments from customers who’d used the service. Results were mixed. The number of thumbs up or down was equal– not enough information for me to risk parting with cash. I decided to scratch them from my list. Will I try another service? Knowing that scammers abound, I’ve decided to self-market. Currently, I’m producing a timeline for book promotion tasks. So far the work seems doable. Already, I’ve garnered a podcast interview for next September, and a spotlight date in October with an established blogger. Two glowing endorsements have arrived from people who received advanced copies of the book. One of them left kind remarks on my website, as well. That comment sparked an interest. Soon after, I received an inquiry on where to buy the book. I hated to disappoint the reader as the memoir won’t be in print until November 2023. I’d piqued her curiosity too early. Doubtlessly, that is a marketing error. Even so, it’s comforting to think my first customer is waiting in the wings.

Hi, anon. Your english is great, don't worry about it. English is not my first language either so my blog is the one place you're not allowed to apologize about that hahaha seriously.

As for Holivia, it's kind of hard to try to predict stuff like that because we don't really have the full picture, we don't know everything they're trying to achieve with the stunt, I made this post almost a year ago with a few guesses. IMO they're using Holivia for a lot of things, not only to promote the movie. It's clear now it's also about a narrative for Harry's album, to keep him in the spotlight, etc... I have no idea what else they have got planned. If I had to guess I would say it will end this year still, because they can make this huge scandal out of the breakup, both to promote DWD and also some new single for the second semester of 2022. It works both ways really well and things change really fast with stunts, so I don't think we can really base our expectations on what is happening right now. If Holivia being all over the place tells us one thing is that they keep pushing the stunt very heavily so it's important for them to make this work promo-wise just like they planned. But again, it's just a guess.

An Interview with R. Wolf

((I will be uploading a small backlog of things over the next few days, since I forgot I used Tumblr for this actually.))

The spotlights at half strength. The distant dots of emergency signs, camera lights and half-illuminated crewmembers peering over thick tablets. The idle murrmurrings of technicians and engineers, insuring the interviewee was safe and secure. “Are you sure?” Questioned one, tapping the pleather so hard the steel frame pressed into it. “Last time was a fluke. Didn’t tell me they were gonna jump.” Confidently replied another. “Again. Are you sure?” “It’s reinforced steel with a few extra bars. The floor gives in before this will.” “That’s no better!” “Then don’t fuck with the aluminium endo next time.”

On the other end sat a balding man with an equally impressed and anxious crew. Despite the heroic efforts of the barber, his hair could not, in fact, be tamed into a suitably fashionable comb over. Unlike his victim, the questioner was talkative. His eyes did not glisten and shine, stare forward or anything. They were animated, vivid, his frown growing at every answer he got.

“So much fanfare for a damn robot!” He insisted in a voice that caused the camera crew to double check the airtime delay.

“Remember you can’t call her that on air.” Said the man holding a clipboard, before returning to repeating each question and topic. It was like a mantra, becoming second nature to the interviewer. There is no room for error in the world of professional teeth pulling, even if the subject is more talkative in this context.

His hairdresser nervously gestured at a gopher, demanding a bottle of matte paint to help remove the excessive shine of his increasingly sweaty and greasy scalp. The beaming light was a gift on any tropical isle, but in a confined studio it does nothing but force excessive dehydration.

“I’ll call whoever I want whatever I want on my show! I’m not making exceptions for a damn robot!”

“Footage is for a promo trailer, sir, remember the legal boundaries.” The snazzy, suited man looked more suited for a live funeral than being anywhere near the highlights. He kept leafing through papers. Some printed documents, others obvious notes written by hand. As with the other two, he insisted that his reminders were most important. “Their legal team isn’t as kind as the court of public discourse, sir.” Was the glue between his statements.

“Airing in t minus five, everyone, get ready.” The producer gestured at the air, unaware the majority of the staff was too fixated on perfecting the picturesque stars. Even his cries were muted by the flurry of information clouding the stars.

“Why me! Why do I have to see it again after she broke my goddamn couch! I was going to sell that season one original for millions!”

“No swearing during the key topics, sir, I’ve marked them in bold, or we’re in breach of contract.” “The engineers assured me the new chair can hold a truck, and the live demo put me at ease.” “Please sit still… nevermind. Can I get some more remover here!” “Remember, it’s Roxanne, Roxy, not Miss Wolf, or robot, or whatever else. Branding!”

“I need air!” The crowd dispersed long enough for his flailing limbs to settle down. “Why couldn’t I at least get the damn bear!”

“Get it out of your system, sir, just like that. A good hour interview like this is nothing. Show them why you are money well spent.”

The metaphorical curtains were drawn as flashy animations cleared from the camera’s view. The dolly rolled in on a collision course, stopping only just far enough that the lens could catch his face in full view. Then it bounced off, seamlessly switching to a boom that showed off the waving machine on the other side. The producer fist pumped at the transition, and sweeped his hand in the air, allowing a start to the proceedings.

“Welcome, my eagle-eyed viewers, to Goodnight with James Holiday, your premiere celebrity news… with a smile.”

The producer’s elation became a migraine as James insisted his timing was better than what was agreed upon. His brain ached with the knowledge of commercial timings that required fine-tuned adjustments.

“Today’s guest is technically a second, but technically a first. Coming from Freddy Fazbear's Mega Pizzaplex, it’s the blaze, the craze, and certainly not just a phase, it’s Roxanne Wolf!”

The large machine engaged with a wave. Not a simple wave, no, she gave a wink, a smile, a show of the teeth, a slight sweep of her form, as if the camera itself was the hottest hunk at the beach. Luckily, the camera was operated by a consummate professional.

“Last time we had the whole gang right here, and what a fun time festival that turned out to be. Don’t worry, the couch is recovering nicely and his wife received a nice flower arrangement. Miss Wolf, let’s jump right in, as you always do. A tour is quite the surprise given your, well, particulars.”

“For god’s sake, James, don’t call her that, and don’t hint at the metal.” The producer’s teeth could grind hematite to raw iron, and his stare could turn performers to stone.

While the audience could see no such thing, there was a brief, intense stare between the two. James looked down at her eyes as if they were the pits of hell, and took all his strength to resist spitting right in them. The robot, in turn, did not respond and maintained the agreed upon emotion of hype.

“Well, yea.” The wolf was animated, and her production crew relieved the chair wasn’t noisy as it supported her animated weight. She even swept her hair to dazzle the audience. “If anything it’s a necessary thing. Can you imagine all my fans who can’t make it to me! It’s my obligation as the best to ensure everyone knows I’m the best.”

James remembered the other time. At least there was a human representative he could make eye-contact with. The round eyes just unnerved him, and her attitude felt faker than his appearance after the crew did their best.

“I can’t imagine it’s an easy operation, moving so far abroad just for a few little performances.”

“I’ve no idea what you mean. Nothing’s too big for me to overcome if it means sharing me. And the rest can be there if they want to.”

“It’s a shame it means cancelling all the shows at the Mega Pizzaplex, ain’t it?”

“As if they’d be worth anything without the gang there. Some things you just can’t copy. And that includes the magic of the band. Besides, they’re redoing the stage and its layout, so by the time we’re back it’ll be better than ever.” The wolf leaned in on the camera, her arms against the armrest. Her wink definitely killed a man on the other side of the lens. “But the stores are open for those who want merch, and autographs are free at the goodbye reception.”

“And Miss Wolf, what made you all think of a tour. Surely your current venue is more than enough to handle things.” He couldn’t help the sneer drooling into his words. Subtle stuff, but his producer knew when he needed to apply small warnings before the dam breaks.

“As I said, I’d loathe to leave a fan behind. And ol’ Fredbear’s such a sap. All the Make-A-Wish arrangements and more.”

“I’ve heard quite a few applications for that, despite your recent arrival to the stage.” James leaned back into his comfortable leather chair, as close to the cooler’s fresh breeze as he could. His face held a smile, but how genuine it was fluctuated from moment to moment.

“Chica said a few hundred. And they’re not even all for me. Understandable we’d get them, we’re incredible. And even if we weren’t, to each their own. I’m sure you’ll all get to see the footage of kids swinging off of Monty like he’s a swingset.” The robot’s motions kept her gaze and attention between camera, interviewer and audience, as if she had attention and care for every side of the performance.

“Ah yes, a shame he couldn’t be here to demonstrate how well he took my weight.”

“No worries, he’s on right now on sister channel Nine-Eighty, having a delightful interview with your extreme sports commentator.”

“Any reason you couldn’t be there with him?’ He took a gulp, feeling the words she stole from his lips, and needing to push them down, lest repetition bore the audience.

“Busy busy, dear, it’s all so busy.” Her posture shifted from merely sitting stiffly in her seat to crossing her legs and playfully leaning forward. Her tongue even grazed her teeth. A mostly hidden gesture, away from the camera side. “Chica’s doing that silly health thing again, Monty’s got that new extreme crazy and well we all know where Freddy is tonight.”

“I mean, aren’t you a better fit for sports, given your background.” There was a pause. In the world of TV, seconds are years, and the producer’s gestures grew to a frenzy as time passed.

“As a race driver. As a race driver. James, the lines.” He hissed, feeling every new gray hair breaking through his scalp. The drops of sweat drowned him as they crawled like snails over his skin.

“After all, your racing career is far more suited for extreme sports than his particular penchants.”

“His new Monty’s Megamix Master’s Gator Golf is far more extreme than my little bouts on the track, and you’ll all know what I mean after its debut at our first stop on tour.”

The audience reactions were subdued so far, and the producer’s endless charades required constant crew intervention to avoid hitting buttons. It was the usual affair, and even the legal advisor prepared himself for the debriefing and all the classic repeats it contained.

“I still would’ve preferred his enthusiasm over your siren song.”

“He would’ve smashed your second couch, who knows how you’d feel about that.” The wolf’s chuckle was buried in the sudden “oo” of the crowd, surprised she’d go there. The producer tapped his earpiece and frowned as he tried to contact the visiting rep, wanting to know what that was all about. An idea he made clear by loudly hissing it as he went along.

“Well, since we’re on the topic of smashing couches, plenty of rumors about you and Chica.” His face twitched. His tongue felt like it just lapped up a fresh spill of motor oil, just saying such a ludacris thing. Kayfabe is one thing, this charade another.

Roxy didn’t take it too well. Neither did the producer, until his legal council politely informed him this was not part of the promo cut, so the script was looser. Even the rep telling him it was allowed didn’t cool his temper.

Roxy, however, started to properly frown. An expression that wasn’t loose seduction or crowd appeal. James felt a brief worry, as one might if they were to taunt an oncoming wolf the weight of a car. He’s had worse, though, as the kayfabe of Terror the Terrible can attest.

“Geeze, ouch, meow, kitty.” She clawed playfully at the air. “I know the lights are hot, but cool down. At least I know how to keep a lady around.” The crowd was about to give another remark, but she interrupted. “After all, the band’s been together longer than your… third marriage?”

James had been shocked on camera. This time, however, the sweat that beaded on his forehead was cold and chilling, and the thick lump he had to swallow felt almost existential. “How would you know anything about that!”

“Looking up a rumor online is easy.” She remarked, leaning her head back with a wink, all calculated so her wild hair landed just right. “Surely you've prepared for interviews before.”

“Puppets like you shouldn’t act out of line.” He knew his lapel microphone picked it up, despite his whispering tone.

“Well, your puppeteer is right over there next to the camera man, so if you want to have a philosophical debate you can bring him onstage so I can talk to the real person directly.”

James composed himself as best he could, clearing his throat silently before sitting upright. “At least I’m not replaceable, like every part in your body.”

“Nah, if they want to keep you they’ll make a cute moving picture of you. At least they won’t have to spray paint your hair on when it’s all digital. Or better yet, they could make a robot out of you! Your contract probably covers that!”

“James, keep it up, the social media response is killing it.” The producer looked up at his tormented puppet and gave him a small wink. Clearly oblivious to the plight of the brave warrior’s crusade.

“Not that you’d get any of it. By the time I’m on my way out you’ll already be out of minutes of fame! So you can look up all about my graceful retirement. Don’t dogs age faster than humans anyway?” The interviewer snarked, content with its delivery.

“Perfect never tarnishes~” The performer threw a killer pose at the camera, which prompted the producer to nudge the next topic.

“Drop it, James, that’s a perfect cut. Next topic, remember, back in promo clip turf, keep it in line.”

When the segment was over, James dragged himself to the refreshment table. Roxy moved in the corner of his eye, eventually getting berated. Although, with her hand in her hip, her pose relaxed and her face neutral, it was clear it was more to get it off the humans’ chests than to have any real result.

He poured himself a cold drink, his lips parched and his tongue dry. No spotlight can match the dehydration of feeling icy cold bullets of sweat flee one’s flesh. Despite the lower pitch of Roxy’s fire, the rest of the show made him feel an existential uncertainty that ruined his appetite. Even though he was thirsty, every drink of water felt like a ball of lead, aching his chest.

The human looked over his hands, and at himself in the reflection cast by the overgrown bowl of bite size snacks. He saw the producer, now lit well enough to be more than a shadowy master of presentation.

“Amazing, James. Rough start, but we pulled through. The engineers are glad there’s no floor to fix, and they got the clips they needed. You can take that bonus and buy your wife a nice fat present for Christmas.”

James blinked. A long, methodical blink. Timed, planned. He turned to his producer and nodded. “I am the best, after all. King of the industry. Was that true, about the CGI crap?”

“Depends. This isn’t a serialized show, James, nor some movie franchise. Your charisma is what makes the stage. Your timing and humor, nothing a CGI department can copy. Anyway, your little draw means the commercial block is a pinch longer, so have a sit down for the next segment.”

“The future of entertainment.”

“It’s one hell of a tagline, and I gotta say, they fool me sometimes. But James, it’s a fad. It’s always a fad. If it wasn’t, there’d be some CGI clown in that chair, instead of you. People fawn over her for a few days, and then it’s done. Leave the big ideas to me.”

“Yea yea, just keep the lawyer off my ass. I’m sure he’d bite a big chunk off at that shewolf comment.”

“Live editing, James. We can fix your little slip of the tongues with a crisp delay and a swift hand. Otherwise I’d have five heart attacks already.”

The human looked at Roxanne, who gave a little high-five to some kids who seemed to have entered just recently. His mind twisted, but everything was perfectly the same as if the wolf was a person. Its head began to hurt.

“Disgusting people who think a robot’s anything like that.”

“I recommend you avoid the internet, James. Even the, ahum, normies, are taking a shine to her. Aesthetically, she’s quite appealing. I can’t complain. My daughter likes the representation. But like you said, it’s a fad. Toughen up, fads bring copycats, and one of them might afford a visit.”

“Thanks for the heads up.”

“Take a break, James. I need you on full blast for the audience segment.” The producer saw prey slip by. That jackass. He immediately peeled off the shoulder hug and stormed on after a grip operator. “You idiot, fisheye, we were using fisheye!”

The presenter’s gaze fell upon the robot. Another had entered. The two girls exchanged a high-five, a handshake, and a heart-felt hug. Then they turned to the small crowd of kids around them, and before too long it seemed like a whole party had started.

The puppet felt limp and cold. Its puppeteer was gone, the stage unwatched.

It is easy to envy the things you’ve never had.

Q: Where can we find you and your stories?

A: @mabeltothknows, AO3

Q: How would you describe your writing style?

A: I try to write with a light touch and get the story across, and to pepper in lots of humor where I can so it (hopefully) feels fun and fizzy and not like a slog to read. Sometimes I probably underwrite, and have to go back and make sure the things that are so clear in my head are actually coming across on the page.

I think many people would describe much of my writing as humor/crackfic, but I really enjoy developing the emotional beats as well. My favorite things are watching how people effect change in others, and exploring incremental moments of growth over time. Maybe my style is most like those chocolate chip cookie recipes where moms hide some good-for-you broccoli in with the sugar, and there was a second half of this metaphor that focused on digestion and which I immediately regretted and will spare you.

Q: How do you come up with ideas for your writing?

A: Sometimes it feels like they just drop from the sky, fully formed, but I’m sure there’s lots of subconscious input happening that leads up to the moment I need to write it down. Others are more clearly the result of watching a TV show, or a conversation. Or sometimes I want to explore a trope but try to take it in a different direction. Death Takes a Holiday started because I wanted to write a holiday fic and also see if I could make dead!Jily fun to read.

Q: When and why did you begin writing fanfiction?

A: Basically as soon as I knew it existed, I wanted in on the fun. Back in the old days of dial-up internet, when your family had a single computer to share, me and my AOL screen name went trolling for fansites about Newsies and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (there were probably thirty of them) and I was astounded that people could actually write their own stories about my obsessions. After devouring many of them, I decided my ideas were too important and original not to share with the world, because who doesn’t need to read a literal child’s interpretation of Buffy and Angel’s forbidden romance? In the form. Of a long poem. It was my Iliad. One thing you could say about me as a writer at that time was I definitely owned a thesaurus.

Q: What’s one thing you’d tell someone who is considering reading one of your fics?

A: Thanks! I know there’s an abundance of good fic out there, and probably a lot of other ways you could be spending your time.

Q: What are some of your favorite Jily tropes?

A: Enemies-to-lovers, enemies-to-friends-to-lovers. Platonic cuddling. James is Lily’s date to Petunia’s wedding. Everyone thinks they’re dating because they’re so obviously right for each other. Oblivious mutual pining. Appreciation of Lily’s emerald-green eyes and the flecks of gold in James’ hazel eyes. Lily and Sirius bond over muggle music, and James is more smitten because they’re friends. I’m sure I’ll think of more later.

Q: What do you like most about the Jily fandom?

A: I like seeing the different ways everyone interprets the same characters we’ve decided to love, and the vast array of origin stories and headcanons. I like the unexpected friendships that have grown from a kernel of a shared interest.

Q: Pick a favourite Marauders era character.

A: Lily.

Q: Self-promo time! List the fics that you are most proud of writing.

We Have Buried the Putrid Corpse of Liberty – still entirely too tickled that people like this fic, and the continued support for it and my writing has improved my life drastically.

The Summer of Dying – I love complicated sister relationships, and getting to paint Petunia as something a little more than the Wicked Stepmother archetype Harry has to live with.

Love is the Law – I just loved writing this and flexing the angst muscles.

Q: Fic rec time! Could you recommend a few of your favourite Jily fics?

A: So I am making a concerted effort NOT to plug the same stories/authors I’m always always always gushing about on tumblr.

Prelude to Destiny by AnEscapeFromReality – This is the fic I went searching for during the pandemic because I remembered loving it so much when I read it years ago, and so it’s also the one that brought me back to Jily. It stood out to me so much because it was the first fic I’d read where Lily was so unique and delightful.

good crimes by flagpoles – I first read it on tumblr. I didn’t even know texting in fics was a thing at the time. I love everything by this author.

The Next Great Adventure by @thirty2flavors – aka Make Me Cry in 1500 Words.
