A Highland Song is great because it has both authenticity (hired Scottish voice actors, worked with Scottish folk musicians for the soundtrack, the level of research & love & care shows through in every element, especially the folkloric stuff, etc) and authenticity (the Scottish teenager yells "YES! GET IN!" when she succeeds at a task and packed mostly curly wurlys when she ran away from home)

The thing about Inkle is that within like a week of a new release they're probably going to make a change to gameplay/add an amazing QOL feature or something that addresses the most common complaints all the players/reviewers have
This is why even though I bought it straight away I haven't played A Highland Song yet

Sometimes I really want to read a short summary of what to expect from a game with a very particular description that CATER to my OWN SPECIFIC interests, so here we go.
what to expect from A HIGHLAND SONG
You play as a girl called Moira and you are running away from your house, crossing hills and mountains to get to your uncle
your uncle asked you to visit by Beltane as he needs to show you something
the game is mainly exploratory, you will need to find passages between peaks, hills and mountains
you find objects and maps through the journey and can get to the highest peaks to recognize/name passages/places
multiple playthrough unlocks more and more story, it is likely that you will need at least a couple or more to fully understand the background of the characters, and to get to your uncle by Beltane
there is no way to "fail", if you get after Beltane you will still retain your knowledge for the next game
there is a "health" bar in the game which gets restored by sleeping at night
at every sleep you will get more information of what your uncle used to tell you through his letters
there are long hills where you can sprint and in those cases you will have to jump (two different types of jumps) following the notes of songs
the game is peppered with small dialogues here and there, regarding your uncle's letters, and some misteryous voices
there are only a few characters
this is an inkle game, so expect full magical realism, unexplained misteries and a dash of bittersweet story
the game is set in Scotland and will also tell you historical events/information regarding the hills
every time Moira's health bar gets to zero, she dies, and that is when you get a little more of her story; plus at every playthrough you will unlock more thoughts and self reflection on her to discover even more
death = the game is not over, it is all part of the story
you can easily complete it in 5 hours (i did two playthroughs and a half in 6)
plot? Moira's uncle asks her to visit by Beltane as he has to show her something. You play as Moira and you will start the game running from home.
gameplay? exploration and 2D platformer
characters? Moira and her uncle are the only real characters, but I have to say, the hills are too.
sadness level? low

A Highland Song
the story of 15-year-old Moira, a runaway teen traversing the Scottish Highlands in order to find the sea.
It is, in part, a rhythm game - the songs being traditional Scottish folk. I haven't finished it yet (got stuck) but its so nice omg,,,,
