Game-rec anon here again, I’m not the biggest fan of horror game but can definitely appreciate it in moderation! I’ll definitely check out both Dredge and the Excavation of Hob’s Barrow, thanks! If you do have any recommendation in the story-driven, light-on-horror but kind of investigatory mysterious vibe (kind of like the first Life Is Strange) I’m all ears! Thank you so much for taking the time!
I'm the same way about horror ^_^ I'm not a horror aficionado, but I appreciate it in moderation.
Oooh, so many ways to go here... I mean, Night in the Woods jumps right out if you're looking for a story-driven game with a bit of mystery and investigation to it that scratches a lot of the same itches as Life is Strange. The art is lovely, the characters are fantastic and relatable, the story is engaging, the gameplay is smooth and satisfying, the dialogue is on-point, and the music is phenomenal. If you haven't played it yet, I highly recommend.
I also recommend checking out Purrgatory. It's free on Steam, and it was shockingly good. More visual novel and/or point-and-click style than LiS or NitW, but it's very much story and character driven with some investigation. More digging for backstory and helping characters find closure than solving a mystery, but it scratches a similar itch. I really loved the characters and dialogue. I like the art style, but some may find it an acquired taste. I didn't expect much from it with it being a free game, but I ended up really, really loving it.
I haven't played it myself yet, but I remember watching my partner play Gone Home a few years ago and it being really good. Story-driven and investigatory/mysterious vibe for sure. I really need to get around to playing that one for myself.
We haven't streamed it in a while, but we were really enjoying Chinatown Detective Agency. Point-and-click mystery/crime-solving game in a futuristic setting with interesting characters and stories. Not as deeply character-driven as LiS and similar games, but it's engaging and has a lovely pixel art style.
A VERY different vibe from LiS, but if you want some mystery-solving fun my partner and I have been enjoying Murder By Numbers. It's more of a visual novel style where you solve nonograms to find evidence to solve mysteries. Again, very different energy from LiS, but it's a fun time. We played a little bit of it in our first Indie Game Speed Dating stream and decided to continue playing it off-stream because it's too much pressure to solve dozens of nonograms for an audience ^_^'
Also a very different vibe from LiS, but we really loved the Frog Detective games. Lots of mystery and definitely story-driven, but also very, very, VERY silly. All depends on what you're in the mood for!
I hope one or more of these recs speaks to you ^_^ Let me know if you end up playing any of them and what you think!

oprainfall Week in Gaming: July 3 – 9
While we here at Operation Rainfall love covering the latest in gaming news and sharing our reviews of titles new and classic, we also just enjoy playing games in our downtime. So with that, sit back, relax, and check out what the oprainfall gaming crew have been up to this week! I still haven’t gotten back to gaming as much as I usually like to. At this point, it’s possibly only part gaming…

Chinatown Detective Agency is fun, until it isn't. Interesting characters and cases, as well as intriguing puzzles. The game wants you to solve the cases by looking things up on your own phone!
Unfortunately, a lot of the puzzles seem ridiculously difficult to solve. The game is also quite buggy at points (voice lines not being heard or being heard too soon, unable to interact with things, terrible save system, etc.). Lastly, even though you get to choose who to work with the final case will always be the same (so not much replayability).

To the anon I accidentally private answer your request without finishing 😭😭 prompt 7 & 38 with Dazai!
Warning: uses of drugs, non-con, dub-con, slight nsfw, lovesick!Dazai, this is NOT a healthy relationship.
“You’re weak. You need me.”
Tumblr media
His voice came out a mere whisper as his fingers trail your fragile body.
Dazai has a habit of saving what's best till last, be it the strawberry on the shortcake you occasionally brought him, or the quail egg in the meat bun you two share on a trip down Chinatown. Even you. He knows that patience is a virtue, but he can't help himself when it comes to you. Just the sight of you is enough to make the brunette lost his composure, he wants you to be his and only his.
To him, you look utterly gorgeous, the way you waltz in the agency, the way you greet other members with that soft, angelic voice of yours. Love is blind, and that leaves no exceptions, not even Dazai can escape it. And of course he knew that. He had seen not one, but many who gone mad for love, and his only miscalculation was that he thought he could escape Cupid's arrow.
Alas, the last straw breaks the camel's back was when he saw you talking in such a casual way with a man he never met. He knew he must not let his old mafia self to have a grasp of him, yet here he is right now, standing right in front of him, staring at the void in Dazai's heart.
"You and I both know that we will eventually lost what we never want to lose. So why not act now before it's too late? Or is it that you prefer to see her cold, dead body in your arms, or maybe you prefer to see the fair lady in someone else's arms?"
No. Dazai wants you. He wants you to be his, and his only. Tightened the grip on his palm, he decided to let the demon prodigy, the former mafia executive takes place just this once.
You wake up to a familiar ceiling. It was Dazai's to be precise. You had seen this far too many, be it the countless times when you come over and cook for the detective to make sure he eats properly, or when you brought him some sweets you claimed to had 'accidentally bought too much' just to check on Dazai and his drinking habit, or those sleepless intimate nights when you two were moaning each other's names.
Dazai's fingers never stopped even once, by now they had already trailing up your thighs to your slick cunt, ready to dip themselves in your heat once more. He knew that you're awake, and yet the idea of stopping never once crossed his mind. His eyes cast over you, the way don't shine like how they used to sent chills down your spine, and the only thing you remember before falling into the hell of pleasure was his fingers making their way in your aroused heat and his soothing words sounds like a lullaby yet the same time sounds like calls from the abyss,
“I’ll make you feel so good you won’t even be able to think about anyone else.”

In vino veritas [Dazai x gn reader]

TW: some symptoms of an anxiety attack / reader has a sensory overload at the end and some swearing
Tumblr media
It all changed one morning while I had decided to take a stroll through Yokohama Chinatown. It was quite cold that day so I was wearing a thick woolen coat and gloves. It was pretty windy too. I had a day off with no gigs to play so I thought I might just look at the town.
Who I didn’t expect to see however was a familiar face. I could recognize that choppy, white haircut even from afar. It was Atsushi, the boy that Dazai had taken under his wing. With him was a girl, I think about 14 years old. She was wearing a kimono with a sprout-like pattern and seemed rather reserved from what I could tell. She didn’t gesture as much as Atsushi did. Her hands mostly kept to her sides.
Atsushi seemed to notice me as well since he started waving enthusiastically. I decided to come over to him and say hello. At least I would have something to do then.
“Ophelia, was it?”
He seemed a bit unsure but happy to see me.
“Yes. Atsushi, right? You’re Dazai’s colleague."
He nodded.
“Oh that’s Kyouka by the way”, he pointed at the girl, “She’s also a colleague of mine. I believe you haven’t met yet.”
She gave a short “hello”. I took another look at her.
“Isn’t she a bit young to work in a detective agency?”
Atsushi laughed nervously and tried to explain himself, which he totally failed at might I add, and kept glancing at Kyouka to help him out. I ended up not asking any further. Instead I corrected myself, telling him not to worry and that it had only been a joke. I asked another question to make small talk.
“So what have you two been up to?”
“Oh just some groceries mostly but we need to go like 10 other places too? I don’t know why they always make me do all the side jobs as well.”
Kyouka looked at him with a deadpan face.
“You suck at paperwork, Atsushi.”
Yep, I was beginning to like this girl already. I had to chuckle quite a bit. Atsushi got red at that, feeling like he had been exposed.
“Kyouka, you know I can’t spell for shit. Yeah but anyways back to the topic: We actually wanted to go get crêpes,” he glanced at the crêpe booth longingly (I think I actually heard his stomach growling at that), then he made a face,“I think there won’t be any time for that though.”
I don’t know what came over me when I started talking. Maybe I had felt a bit of pity for the boy. He was young. He should enjoy himself. Also this would give me an excuse to keep myself busy.
“Is there something I could help with? I don’t have anything to do anyways.”
Atsushi looked surprised.
“You really don’t need to!”
“Don’t worry man. I seriously have nothing better to do.”
Then he glanced at Kyouka as if to check if it was alright to give me an answer.
“I mean there’s one thing.”
Kyouka continued talking for him.
“You know Dazai, right? At least that’s what I’ve gathered. We need to drop off some stuff at his place. You could bring him that. He’ll may like to see a face not related to work. He doesn’t like work.”
Atsushi nodded at that.
“Yeah, he kind of forgets to buy groceries sometimes. Or to leave his house for that matter…”
I swallowed hard. This was the chance I’ve been waiting for. But somehow this felt illegal. “All personal things you will get to know about me will be told to you by my humble self”, his voice said in the back of my head. Yep he definitely wouldn’t want me ringing his doorbell, showing up out of nowhere.
However, I thought: But who was I to follow rules made up by someone? So I will liberate myself from my self-inflicted immaturity! Sapere aude! I’ll do what seems reasonable to my humble self, not him. So for now I would ignore that rule. I decided to ignore it just like he had ignored me. Serves you right. Was I being petty? Maybe.
So I said:
“Oh I can totally go drop that off. I just don’t remember his address. We usually meet at my place.”
Atsushi then gave me the address. Adrenaline was now rushing through my whole body. I didn’t know if I was happy or scared of what’s about to come. Atsushi then asked me for another favor.
“You’re friends right? You reckon you could check if he’s doing well in there? He hasn’t left the house in a couple of days as far as I know. We don’t see him much these days.”
I made a face. Fucking hell. So I was right to worry. I knew I was scared of seeing him. But now I also knew I needed to see him. Under the pretense of a welfare check issued by Atsushi of course.
“Yeah I’ll do that. I’ve been worried too, y'know?”
The boy smiled at me after that and handed me the plastic bags.
“Thank you so much! I’ll make sure to return the favor when I’m given the chance.”
With that they took their leave. I was still shaken up. Had I really just agreed to this?
When shaken up I get overwhelmed pretty quickly. The full streets here in Chinatown didn’t help either. All the sounds and smells confused me beyond belief while I was painstakingly aware of my own heartbeat. I needed to get out of here. At least for a minute or two. I ended up disappearing into an alleyway to calm down and sat on the pavement.
“Holy shit.” I ran my fingers through my hair. Nope. I wasn’t going to do it after all. This was too much. Dazai and the world could go fuck themselves. I hated it. I hated those sounds and those smells and those-
I then heard a sound. Like something had been thrown over. I stared down the alleyway seeing something move. Adjusting I could slowly figure out what it had been. Nothing more than a mere stray puppy. It looked at me and turned its head to the side. Yeah I’d be confused too seeing a random person panting and shaking on a sidewalk. I began to talk.
“Oh hey there. You good?”
It slowly began walking towards me. Then sniffing. Then wagging its tail. “Friend”, the puppy must’ve decided. I reckoned it also wanted a break from the busy street.
“Also overwhelmed by all the smells? I feel you buddy.”
After a few tries it ended up letting me pet it. I dragged my hand over its smooth brown fur. It felt nice, calmed me in a way. This felt like a sign that I should go through with it and get my ass up to see Dazai, get myself together. I wouldn’t tell him I had just pet a stray dog though. He’d probably stand five meters away from me after hearing that. I think if it had been a cat however he would’ve been fine with it. My mind was clearer now. I ended up giving the puppy the plain rice I had left over from the lunch I had taken with me. I had already eaten most of it out of boredom and I felt like I should pay this little fellow for helping me in a way.
Because stray dogs help each other.

[Can you tell the reader is getting increasingly more stressed out? Yeah… They’re just like me fr. BECAUSE I’M FREAKING OUT AS WELL. I have some of the most important exams of my life coming up in a few weeks and never really learned how to study, which is just GREAT (please tell me you could hear the sarcasm). Anyways I still will try to upload. I may be a bit inconsistent but I still want to provide you guys with further chapters. But be prepared for what’s coming because (as you may have guessed by the tags) Dazai is an asshole and a mess.]

Do you play video games? If so what ones? What ones are you looking forward to being released? Is there an old game you wish they'd make a sequel for?
I do! One of the degrees I did is actually interactive media/game design. Most of the games that I like are story-based puzzlers- when I was a kid I was obsessed with the Nancy Drew video games, and now I'm on a binge of Chinatown Detective Agency so things haven't changed that much. I also play a fair amount of art games. I don't really keep up with new releases that much anymore because I have such a big backlog of games I want to get through already. But my most anticipated game is one that I think will never actually be released- it's a puzzle-platformer called Miegakure that takes place in four dimensions and it's been in development since 2009. And then not so much sequel games, but I'm curious what the Kingdom Hearts "Lost Master" games will look like. A lot of the Kingdom Hearts games are firmly mid but KH1 was the first game I ever finished and so I have a soft spot for that whole franchise.

@beastlit liked this post to be forcibly given a baccano! au.
I absolutely think there is an easy way to do this. Speaking simply, he’d fit in very well with Jacuzzi’s Gang ( Atsushi and Jacuzzi might as well be the same character in different fonts to be completely honest ), but. I have made an effort with these aus in the past to avoid the most obvious decision when there IS an obvious decision, so I have something a little more unique in mind. That said, it’s only SLIGHTLY more specifically tailored rather than just chucking him into any given organization. So, I think Atsushi would work relatively well as an affiliate of the Daily Days.
The Daily Days: An unusual information brokerage in New York City’s Chinatown. Rather than doing business in alleyways, they have a front of a newspaper company with their information exchanges taking place in one location. SEE: Rachel Jones.
Aside from being the closest thing Baccano! has to a detective agency, they’re also in the business of helping people out for payment other than money---information. I have the specific thought of Atushsi needing to buy some piece or another of information, but being unable to afford it by ordinary means, he’s instead offered a deal: if he can obtain previously unknown information equal to the value of the information he wants, he can have that information for “free”. In that way, I think he could become a gopher for the Daily Days.
(A very specific and tangential sidenote, the person making this offer would probably be Henry, That Motherfucker, since Henry is notorious for exploiting others if it means he has the most information about any given scenario.)
To get specific, I think Atsushi could find plot involvement in plotlines ranging from 1932 to 1935. Though the Daily Days HAS a plot in January of 1932, I’m actually talking about 1932 Summer: Man in the Killer here. This is mostly due to Man in the Killer’s nature as a more mystery-oriented book that the Daily Days already has a hand in in the form of reporter Carl Dignis, who I think Atsushi could accompany on his quest to uncover the identity of serial killer Ice-Pick Thompson as one of his first forays into the dangerous world of information hunting. Also, almost the entire cast of Man in the Killer is absolutely fucking insane and I think putting Atsushi anywhere near them would be really funny.
I think Atsushi could also have involvement in the story of 1933 precisely because the Daily Days doesn’t have as strong of a presence in that story. Since the plot takes place at Nebula-owned skyscraper Mist Wall, I think it would be funny if Atsushi were investigating Mist Wall for a completely different reason... only to become a firsthand witness to the chaos at the top-floor Babel restaurant. Because of his self-sacrificing nature I wouldn’t be surprised if he actually became involved in the fighting for the sake of protecting civilians.
Nebula: A large corporation led by Cal Muybridge. While it handles everyday matters such as construction and city planning, it also takes care of matters related to the supernatural, up to and including the liquor of immortality. Headquartered in Chicago and with a skyscraper known as Mist Wall in New York City, Nebula’s alchemical research is headed by Renee Parmedes Branvillier. SEE: Sham.
As usual, since I love involving as many crossovers as I possibly can in the 1935 plotline, I think Atsushi would be specifically asked to join the party at Ra’s Lance to celebrate the casino’s opening. Everyone knows something big is going to happen there, so obviously the Daily Days would want someone who reports directly to them present.

EU delays Activision Blizzard decision as Microsoft offers further remedies
Tumblr media
EU regulators have delayed a decision on Microsoft's proposed $69BN acquisition of Activision Blizzard after the company submitted remedies in its efforts gain approval.
The European Commission had previously announced a provisional deadline of 25th April for its decision on the controversial takeover, but, as reported by Reuters, that has now shifted to 22nd May as its reviews Microsoft's latest submissions.
Details of these remedies have not been made public, as per EU policy, but it's likely these relate to a flurry of recent deals Microsoft has signed in a bid to be seen as willing to bring Call of Duty - a particular sticking point for regulators in the EU, US, and UK - to competing services.

Former Criterion leaders set-up new AAA games studio Fuse Games
Tumblr media
The veterans who left Need for Speed developer Criterion in December last year have reunited to form a new AAA studio: Fuse Games.
The new outfit has been founded by studio general manager Matt Webster, head of content Steve Uphill, head of production Pete Lake, head of technology Andrei Shires, and head of operations Alan McDairmant.
The team is in the process of finding an office in Guildford, and will adopt a hybrid working approach. Its first game will be a AAA console and PC release, and when asked if it'll match the games Criterion is famous for – racing titles such as Burnout and Need for Speed – Webster isn't giving anything away.
"Even our recent history spans a few things," Webster reminds us. "Obviously arcade racers and open world racers are what we know very deeply. But we have played around in other genres over the years, including Battlefront, Battlefield… VR. We know what we are good at, and that spans a broad range of things now. Once we select our genre, we want to lead that genre."

Chinatown Detective Agency [Review]
Chinatown Detective Agency is a little point-and-click game, where you (duh!) play a role of private detective, starting out and solving cases -- and amongst them, there will be a case that starts simple, but sets the path for your career...
This little game is intriguing and funny, and I loved characters and the story. And under usual circumstances it would be a five stars from me, but there are a couple of things about the game itself that, sadly, made my experiences far from perfect.
Tumblr media
Firstly, this game leans into a concept of having to look up things online to know answers to questions in game. Now, that certainly was a thing a while back that was quite popular; and to me, personally, the time for this concept to work has passed.
Not only did I constantly got tons of walkthrough for the game links which made it harder to go through results and figure out what exactly I need to know... on top of that, the things to look up were... very specific and rather tough to find.
Granted, the game gives you an option to call your friend / ally for help and get hint or solution which I did appreciate, but at the same time -- it’s like skipping a puzzle in a game, really. I didn’t choose to gather help because I struggled or didn’t want to try and solve the puzzle, but because solving the puzzle was time-consuming and complex to the point of it being... unbearable to me.
Tumblr media
And, I truly hated the parts where googling things up was mixed with time limit. Now... I am going to ignore what happens when you have slow connection; however, my internet speed is decent and I still was too slow if I didn’t know anything about the topic and had to find info... It was truly annoying (especially since fail means you get yeeted back to start of the mission).
So that’s a design choice in gameplay I did not like, but I could deal with it. However, game was also just so filled with bugs to the point where simple, plain playthrough (once) through the game made me cause to even softlock it once. And little bugs that you notice but ignore were so common it really pulled me out of immersion of the game.
Those were two major issues I have. The writing certainly made it worth my time, the pixel graphics are nice and the areas are designed well -- a couple extra items to click on, but things are rather linear most of the time. The whole art design definitely was up my alley, somewhat retro-ish from my POV and made me feel nostalgic about my childhood, for sure.
Tumblr media
The game had many great parts, the story pulled me in and I just wish it was polished just a little bit more. That being said, it is a 25$ indie game (albeit published by Humble), and I am not gonna harp too much at its flaws. I think for the 25$ you get a decent little game, an entertainment for ~10h, with possibility to replay it as at some point you do make a rather big choice (it might be fun to see where other choices take you).
So, all in all, I recommend it, but you should be aware of the couple of flaws Chinatown Detective Agency has, and it may at times annoy you. Though, if you are a connoisseur of good story, you won’t be disappointed.
