i was an attention-seeker. i was the textbook example of an attention-seeker. i was a troublemaker. i would self-harm. i destroyed my own relationships. i was uncontrolled, dramatic, sensitive. i took everything personally. i had "nothing" to be depressed "about," but made a big show of how sad i was nonetheless. i was really unsafe about myself in a lot of ways.

the strange thing about that is: it meant others could ignore me. the prevailing wisdom behind knowing something is "attention seeking" is to say: well, since you want it that bad, you're not getting any. it meant i was lower-on-the-list of concern. it meant an eye-roll.

the belief was that: since i was obviously doing these things on purpose, it would be bad behavioral training if i was "rewarded" for it. it would "teach me" that i simply had to make enough fuss, and i'd finally get all that missing attention and love. no, it was better to ignore that stuff.

i was suffering. and it felt like - oh, it doesn't matter how loudly i am in pain, nobody gives a shit about if i'm living or dying.

awhile ago, i went through my journals from that time. a lot of them read the same thing. in them, i am convinced i am invisible. that nobody wants to hear me, to see me. that i could die or vanish and nobody would even notice. i didn't even want attention - not really - because it was always dismissive, mocking. nothing i ever did would be good enough to get someone to actually-worry about me.

that's a terrifying thing for me to read as an adult. that is a child who fully has no problem committing. that is a child who has no concept of feeling loved. the most basic human instinct is missing from her life.

i needed help. i didn't know how to ask for it. i was a kid. i was a kid in a bad home, and whenever i thought things couldn't get worse there - they almost always did.

and the ways i showed that - the ways i tried to deal with that - they made others dismiss me. i wasn't suffering prettily. after all, if i was really in trouble, why wouldn't i just march into the first counselor's office and ask someone to help me? i had the opportunities, right? what did i think would happen, exactly? that someone would finally stand up and do something? who even wants that kind of responsibility?

i heard connection-seeking for the first time about three months ago. my therapist mentioned it when we were talking about my history. it rang some kind of horrible bell, deep inside me. i don't know what she said in the rest of her sentence. i just started... crying.

"oh no", i said to her. "i think i just realized: i have no idea how to forgive them for minimizing the ways i was hurting."

how many other kids, though. how many other kids were out there drowning, snatching around for a lifevest, some kind of rope - how many were straight-up ignored.

how many of those kids aren't gonna get old.

That post about discounting victims trauma really hit me hard. I had a therapist tell me that my parents' abuse was just "learned helplessness" and then a different therapist tell me that my parents treated me badly because my depression was hard on them (I was depressed because I'd been abused my whole life) And I genuinely believed both of those therapists for years, in part because victim blaming kids for being "difficult" is so normalized that I just never questioned it. Even when I was an adult I'd just accepted that being mentally ill meant I deserved abuse because of the way people talk about mental illness... It sucks

It truly does. I suppose abuse is normalized , especially where children are involved. There's this idea in some places that abuse just "happens to us all" and that, if you're affected by being abused, that is your fault, not the fault of whomever abused you.

It's a popular idea, I've seen, because it takes away the adults' responsibility to treat younger people like humans. It takes the shame and guilt off the parents, guardians, teachers, family, doctors backs and places it squarely on the child.

We must change this. We must, it is imperative. It is so fucking important to teach people that abuse isn't normal. It isn't a fair exchange of power. It isn't right. You aren't at fault for the abuse you faced, and, most importantly, YOU DIDN'T DESERVE IT.

Last visit before the trail

(this goes with my Sal's little angel fic, Sally face au I don't have a name for. Warning child got attacked and execution mentioned )

Sal hung his head as he was walked down the vast hallway. As of late he had visitors every day mostly reporters and people wanting to "write" his story. However since today was Saturday he could only hope that it wasn't one of the leeches come to feed.

"Here he is little lady you've got an extra two hours today" the guard said as Sal glanced up. Of course, there she was sitting there waiting for him, his little Epilene. Sal walked into the visitor's room and sat down. Studying her every figure with a concerned eye. Ash hadn't sent a update after her birthday last month so Sal was concerned to see the bruises and bandages. He waited for the guard to leave before he'd say anything though. It was a private matter clearly since Ash wasn't sitting with her.

"here, they wrote you a letter" She said sweetly pulling an envelope out of her jacket and putting it through slot. Trying to keep her head high until the guard walked out behind Sal. She bring a letter from Larry's ghost every so often, rarely did it have much on it but this time the envelope was thick.

"What happened sweetie?" Sal asked as he took the letter and shoved it into his shirt to read later. He wasn't going to waste his little girl's time. The 9 year old could have been doing anything else but choose to visit him.

"well.. I... I got attacked" She said softly hugging her shoulders as Sal stiffened," by someone . It's nothing though"

"were they a kid or an adult?" Sal asked softly biting his lower lip as he looked at her. It was one of the few times she didn't make eye contact with him. She'd been threatened before by adults who believed she was partly to blame for his actions or wanted to hurt Sal directly. So Sal wouldn't be assuming it was directly at him in which whomever hurt his little angel was trying to inflict pain.

A bit later than usual thanks to Mr. Travis not stopping about the trail coming up and wondering if she was going to it. Epi didn't mind the question as he usually was the one to give her rides to the prison to see her Papa without Ash knowing. He'd also been receiving Epi's letters from Sal for the past year since the whole birthday card scandal with her ever so loving foster mom Ashley being discovered to be hiding replies to her letters to Papa. Epi was taking her usual method of entry to the treehouse called climbing the fence. Of course she'd have a easier time cutting through the abandon apartment building but she made a promise to not step foot in it unless she absolutely had too. As Epi landed on the other side of the fence and made her way to the backyard she heard a blood turning thud as someone crashed to the ground. She froze spying apon the dead body laying there, and she took a step back. Eyes widened in fear as she heard Larry's voice cursing from the treehouse. Oh goodness no was that Papa's therapist? The only person who could for sure get Papa out of prison laying there a broken mess on the ground. She really should have found a way to make that treehouse fool proof. Dammit, she thought running to the body, he could still be alive right maybe? Just a tiny bit?

"Dr.Eon! Dr.Eon can you hear me?!" She yelled her heart racing as she kneeled next to the doctor's and looked up at Larry through the treehouse enterance. What were they going to do now? She was late , the doctor was dead and Papa was stuck in prison! She was about to ask Larry when something grabbed her arm. She glanced back to the dead therapist in horror as gunk came out of his eyes and bones snapped back into place. Next thing the nine year old knew she had deep gashes in her arms and was trying to scramble up the tree to the safety of the treehouse. The corpse clawing at her with most likely the intention of killing her. She barely made it up with a black eye and a myriad of other injuries as the corpse settled down below. Leaving her be and walking off. Epi swallowed hard at the memory as she looked at Papa.

"it...it...was a thing... I don't what it was other than something that looked human" Epi said biting her lip. She could remember staying in the treehouse until dark and Ash climbing up the ladder to see her bloody and broken. Ash assumed she'd been jumped and reported to the police. The kids at school were all being questioned and she didn't refute Ash's theory if only so she could still visit today.

"Epilene you didn't go into the apartments did you?" Papa asked softly, the tone of his voice more understanding than her foster mom's. Then again Papa only scolded her in writing not in verbal communication.

"of course not Papa I went into the treehouse" She replied with a unintended hiss. Ash asked her the same question so often that she'd developed a bitter reaction to the question as a whole. Papa seemed to understand it though, he had more trust in her word than Ash did.

" Good that place is very dangerous I don't want you to go in there ever if possible" The man said before changing the subject quickly to something else," Ash said you wrote about me in class last month. What did you get on the paper?"

" I got a C because the substitute teacher thought I was nuts. She marked a lot of my facts as wrong" Epi said crossing her arms and leaning back in her chair," Mr. Penny said he'd evaluate my grade after I talked to the school counselor about the normal stuff."

" I'm sorry to hear that sweetie" Papa said softly, clearly glad to have changed the subject. The paper in question was about people who were wronged in life and it was in her advanced English class. "I know sweetie but I don't want you to over do yourself. I most likely won't be getting out of here" Papa said hanging his head and looking at the chains.
