African Burial Ground. Walk through lower Manhattan, on Duane Street, and you will come across a unique burial ground amongst all the high-rise buildings that surround it. The African Burial Ground is a unique memorial that is dedicated to all the African slaves who created a sacred space to bury their loved ones. It also acknowledges the role slavery played in helping build this city while recognizing their heritage and the hardship they had to endure. While the memorial is now set on a tiny piece of plot, it wasn't so then. In the 17th and 18th centuries, this site was spread across six acres of land in what was then an isolated part of Manhattan. It is to this hidden burial ground that these Africans came, in secret, to bury their dead, forge new friendships, and share stories, music, faith, and traditions. It was forgotten for more than a hundred years until its discovery in 1991 when the city was excavating the area for a new building. It is around this small corner that the remains of 419 men, women, and children were discovered. If one were to account for all of the six acres, imagine the total number of remains that lie undiscovered. _________________________________________ @nofixedaddrs #nofixedaddrs _________________________________________ All within your reach 🇺🇲 #allwithinyourreach #VisitTheUSA #UnitedStories #OutdoorsUSA #seeyourcity #AllInNYC #ItsTimeForNYC #YesNY #ISpyNY _________________________________________ ………. ……... …….. ……. …… ….. …. … .. . #nationalpark #nationalparks #urbanparks #cityparks #FindYourPark #BlackHistory #newyorkcity #manhattan #lowermanhattan #downtownmahattan #newyorkers #picturesofnewyork #instagramnyc #nycskyline #newyork_instagram #online_newyork #instragramnyc #newyorklife #NYClife #nycinstagram (at African Burial Ground National Monument) https://www.instagram.com/p/CRdR26FsTK-/?utm_medium=tumblr

KNOT combines many of the touchstones of Rashaad Newsome’s multidisciplinary practice: spinning decorative jewelry, lavish Gothic architecture, Black ballroom dancing, mathematical knot theories, and a frenetic energy that emerges from the extraordinary dancers and vocalists, as well as the artist’s surrealistic digital collaging techniques. Commissioned for the Brooklyn Museum’s 2014–15 exhibition Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe, the video heralds the legacy and longevity of Vogue Fem dance’s Black, Latinx, queer, and trans originators and innovators.
See KNOT in full as part of our Art on the Stoop: Sunset Screenings series, showing each Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday through October 11, starting at 6pm.
Orchard Farm. “All fruits are equal, but some fruits are more equal than others.” With that one sweeping statement, Choqita, leader of the bananas and plantains, seized power and took control of the lemons and other fruits to proclaim the first Banana Republic. However, some things just are not meant to be. Once Choqita had cemented control over the farm, it would not be long before the lemons and other fruits rebelled. They were led by Volks and Wagen, two partisans who had seen and survived a war that had engulfed the whole fruit world many decades ago. With the blessings of their guardian angel and the original lemon simply known as ‘The Beetle’, they set about stirring the other fruits to revolt, coining a patriotic song that has become the stuff of legend among all in the fruit world. “Fruits of the orchard, fruits of the farm, Fruits of every land and clime, Listen to my prophecy, Of a golden future time.” While the rebellion was swift, many a fruit was lost to the cause; sliced up, turned into pulp, or simply had their juices sucked out of them. But, like all things in life, there is always dessert after a meal. Years later, while Choqita continues to wield considerable power over her subjects in the Banana Republic, the lemons and other fruits have gone on to start their farm. And while there is an uneasy truce in the fruit world, it will not be long before there is another uprising. After all, it is not just Choqito, Volks, and Wagen who know and understand that leadership is never, ever, a pleasure. If you make a wrong decision, my fruits, then where should we be? _________________________________________ @nofixedaddrs #nofixedaddrs _________________________________________ All within your reach 🇺🇲 #allwithinyourreach #seeyourcity #AllInNYC _________________________________________ ………. ……... …….. ……. …… ….. …. … .. . #chelseanyc #manhattannyc #manhattan #cornersofnewyork #publicart #streetarteverywhere #urbanart #cityphotography #volkswagen #vwlife #vwtype #volkswagenbus #baywindow #vwclassic #nycinstagram #nycityworld #instanewyork #nyc #newyork #newyorkcity #NYClife #discovernyc #downtown #bananarepublic #animalfarm #georgeorwell (at Chelsea, Manhattan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPNGVS1s_Ox/?utm_medium=tumblr
