Watched Porco Rosso for the first time last night, and was really surprised at how sexist and "made by a man" it was? I can't recall ever watching a studio ghibli movie and thinking that before. It wasn't even that the female characters were written poorly because for the most part they weren't. But all the men were constantly commenting on women's appearance and bodies, hitting on a 17 yr old, there are weird shots and lines, and the female characters' plots exist for Porco Rosso's

Okay. Gonna make a small complaint here. But like - one of things I really don't like in games is when they give me a choice that isn't a choice. Like, I'm used to it in Pokemon, cool, great, whatever.
But like. When you give me a choice to tell Kirigiri about Sakura or not. I expect to be allowed to tell her when I want to tell her. Instead of being given the exact same dialogue Makoto gave me before I clicked Tell her. Like - even Pokemon usually gives me different flavor text when I pick the answer it doesn't want me to pick.
C'mon, Danganronpa.
If it isn't a choice and there's not any additional info for picking the wrong choice in this situation, then don't give me the choice. It's frustrating either way.

I've seen Avatar 2, The way of water so you don't have to (maybe a thread ?)
I've recently watched Avatar 2 with my parents as we don't have much occasions to do family stuff since my father is sick. Anyway.
Even after 13 years of waiting for the sequel to be released - because according to Google, the first one came in 2009 - , I wasn't very much appealed by it. I was afraid that it might not be as great as when I was... 9 years old ? (IS THAT SO ?! WAS I REALLY THAT YOUNG ?!) And I think it was justified. Let me tell you why.
Disclaimer : I don't really know what I was expecting but I surely wasn't expecting this.
After a few minutes of watching the movie (in French, I'm really sorry but my father couldn't have handled a VO), my first reaction was
"It's like we're having James Cameron making the fanfiction he wrote himself adapted into a movie... he made himself. Like he IS his own number 1 fan. Oh. My. God. "
Because, truth needs to be spoken, the scenario was equal to one of the fanfiction sphere easily found on AO3 or - heavy breathing - FFnet. Which doesn't mean it is bad in itself, but in my opinion, for a movie we waited for so long, I would have appreciated if some efforts had been put to level up the story. But there's worst than that.
Indeed, some scenes appear to be meaningful in the others movies so if Avatar 2 doesn't match James Cameron's expectations about the success of The Way of Water, we might never get the answers of these scenes as the sequel-sequel wouldn't be released. Money matter, u kno.
Also, I have rewatched Avatar 1 to be in the mood. But I'm not 9 anymore, the magic is gone, I feel like it's merely Pocahontas with blue characters and a ecological aspect (but I like Pocahontas more). I will forgive Avatar 1 for the sake of 2009 and the past but I will strike Avatar 2, because water IS NOT under the bridge and 2022 is challenging for the movie industry. Avatar 2 is trully beautiful, it's breathtaking, but it won't be enough to satisfy the audience. I wasn't satisfied ; if it had been for esthetic purposes only - like a video game scenery or else - it would have filled its goal PERFECTLY. But it's not. We wanted a story, and the story is frustrating. As you see :
The first third part of the movie was basically "The Return of Jake Sully apprenticeship - Extented version" as he and his family moved to a water tribe and have to learn a new way of living - the way of water baby. The second third part is basically the children having the existential crisis we all went through as teenagers - searching for our place in this world, our relationship towards others, why we're seen the way people are seeing us etc. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, the third third part of the movie was the famous LAST STAND with the Enemy-brought-back-from-the-dead, who appears to HAVE A SON - but we'll get through this later, I promise because I have many things to say about this special character - because the Grief-Revenge Arc, famously known in the Marvels movies, has the wind in the sterns. And, if I remember it correctly, it's also a part of the Third-Act-Structure writers use to structure their novel. I don't know if that same structure is used to serve other purposes. Anyway.
I have many many things to say about that movie, 3hours it's so f*cking long. Should I make a thread ? *sigh*

ICJ Ruling
Okay, let's get into this.
First of all, I get the frustration at the court not ordering a ceasefire. I was disappointed and frustrated at first too, since a ceasefire was the biggest and most important preliminary measure South Africa was requesting - and of course we just all want this horror to finally end for the people in Gaza. So I get the frustration and disappointment, I really do.
However, I do think this ruling is still a major win for South Africa, Palestine, and international law as a whole and here's why:
The court acknowledged that it has jurisdiction over this case and completely dismissed Israel's request to throw out the case as a whole. It will now determine at the merits stage (that will probably take years) whether Israel is actually commiting genocide.
The court acknowledged that Palestinians are a "distinct national or ethnic group and therefore deserving of protection under the genocide convention". Pull this out next time someone tells you "there's no such thing as Palestinians, they're all just Arabs".
The court acknowledged very unambiguously that "at least some" of Israel's actions being genocidal in nature is "plausible". South Africa has a case, officially. Israel is accused of genocide, in a way the ICJ deems "plausible", officially. This is huge. (And seriously, how freaking satisfying was it to hear all of those genocidal statements by Israeli politicians read out loud and used as justification for this rulling?)
The court might not have ordered a "ceasefire" in those words, but they did order Israel to "immediately end all genocidal acts" (which includes killing and injuring Palestinians) and submit proof that they actually did. How are they going to comply with this ruling without at least severly reducing or changing what they're doing in Gaza?
In fact, this wording might actually be more appropriate for a genocide (vs a war), as author and journalist Ali Abunimah notes on Twitter:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's completely right. Israel lost today, by overwhelming majority (I mean, 15 to 2? I heard people predict the rulings would be very close, like 9 judges vs 8, but instead we got 15 to 2 (and even 16 to 1 on the humanitarian aid). Holy shit.) The court disimissed almost everything Israel's side of lawyers said, while acknowledging that South Africa's accusations are "plausible".
And this is important especially because of Mr Abunimah's second tweet there^. Because the question is, where do we go from here?
This ruling means that Israel is officially /possibly/ commiting genocide and that should have huge international consequences. The rest of the world now HAS to take these accusations seriously and stop arming and supporting Israel - and if they won't do it on their own, we, the people, have to make them. This is THE moment to rise up all around the world, especially in the countries most supportive of Israel (the US, the UK, Germany): Protest, call your representatives and demand a ceasefire and an end of arms deliveries to Israel.
We now have a legal case to back our demands: If Israel is, according to the ICJ, "plausibly" commiting genocide, then all of our governments are, according to the ICJ, "plausibly" guiltly of aiding in genocide. And we need to hold that over their heads and demand better. We need to do that right now and in huge numbers. Most politicians only care about themselves and saving their skin. We have to make them realize that they could be accused of aiding in genocide.
(As a German, I'm thinking of Germany here in particular: After South Africa's hearing, our government dismissed their case as having "no basis" - how are they going to keep saying that now that the ICJ officially thinks otherwise? Over the last months, people here have been arrested at protests for calling what's happening in Gaza a genocide. How are the police supposed to legally keep doing that now that the ICJ has officially deemed this accusation "plausible"? I used to be scared to use the word "genocide" at protests or write it on my protest signs - not anymore, have fun trying to arrest me for that when the ICJ literally has my back on this one 🖕🏻.)
So yeah - don't be defeatist about this, don't let Israel's narrative that they "won" (they didn't) take over. This might not be everything we wanted, but it's still a good result. Don't let what the court didn't say ("ceasefire"), distract you from the very important things that they did say. Let this be your motivation to get loud and active, especially if you live in any country that supports Israel. Put pressure on your governments to not be complicit in genocide, you now officially have the highest international court on your side.

How to turn off AI Training of your content on Web and Mobile:
On a Web Browser:
Tumblr media
I had some trouble finding this option. My first instinct was to click the settings button on the left, but that's where it is!
First, you'll click the name of your blog on the left sidebar to bring it up on your browser.
Tumblr media
Then click "Blog settings" on the right sidebar once your blog is brought up. That's where they're hiding it.
Tumblr media
Click "Prevent Third-Party Sharing" under the Visibility section, and bam! You're done.
On Mobile:
Tumblr media
Thankfully it's much easier on mobile. Just click the Gear icon on your blog's page, to go to settings.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scroll all the way down until you see Visibility, then toggle the Prevent third-party sharing option for your blog!!
If you disable this setting on mobile, it automatically synced it to my web browser settings, too. ...But if you use both Web and Mobile, I would still highly recommend double checking that it actually turned off on both!!
Check that it's turned off on your side blogs too! And check your settings every now and then anyway to ensure that it's staying turned off, because if my memory serves right, some other websites will pull some shenanigans on things like this and opt you back in without telling you!
Leave Feedback on New Features at Tumblr Support Here!! Let Staff know however we can that having our content fed to AI at their whim is unacceptable.
And if you have the option to poison your art with Nightshade or Glaze, keep it up!!

It's been almost a year since my last post but I can't not talk about this.
F1 is trying to make a big deal about being more progressive, making a safe place for women. And how do they do that? By grossly mishandling a potential sexual assault case at the start of the season. Allowing Patrick Mahomes to buy shares of Alpine after repeatedly defending his brother's sexual battery case. Allowing James Charles into the paddock, someone with multiple allegations involving underage boys.
AND INVITING DONALD TRUMP.
edit to add: Camila Cabello is a racist and so is Jake Paul who are also at this race

one who had dreams of being a hero
This comic is based on Story 3, which speaks of his hobby of ice fishing originating from the days he'd go out with his father on the ice, 'accompanied by his father's unending tales of adventure,' and dream of being the protagonist.
Nowadays, he keeps up the hobby, though only as a method of training... and it seems he fishes alone.
I thought a lot about fairytales and stories told to children -- how they are used to impart lessons and shape a child's growing sense of morality.
I think these stories were Childe's father telling him what kind of man he hoped his son would become.
In Story 5, 'his father had no choice but to hand his beloved son over for conscription into the Fatui' in an attempt to discipline his temper, but was disappointed when Childe continued ascending the ranks, further and further from the gentle boy he was..
His father named him after the hero Ajax. Is he still disappointed in the path Childe has taken? Does he still see his son in the man he sees before him? Does Childe feel in himself the chasm between who he dreamed of becoming and who he is now?
It's interesting, that fairytales should often have a very strict good/evil morality. Childe professes he has no use for such things, and will gladly become a mindless weapon so long as he can continue honing himself for battle. And yet, has he truly given up on being human?
For a Harbinger, Childe is oddly principled, preferring straightforward battles without deceit. He retains a sort of moral code, reluctant to involve those who are defenseless in his plans.
And of course, he deeply cherishes his family. What sort of weapon has a family? Why does he cling so desperately to this identity as a defender of childhood dreams, of being his sister Tonia's knight?
Perhaps his own dream of being a hero died long ago, but a part of him still recognizes the tragedy of it and maybe... in some way, is still trying.
This is somewhat of a companion piece to my Scara comic "one who has given up on being saved". Childe, unable to live up to his childhood ideals of heroism, and Scara, whose pleas for help went unanswered.
A failed hero, and someone who never had one.
ARGHH yknow it drives me nuts. I haven't known peace since I started thinking about it.
