"Love me, but don't worship me. I'm not a god."
— Elvis Presley
Tumblr media
[1957, Graceland, Memphis, Tennessee] He studies me for another long minute. He seemed to be trying to decide how to say something. How to say it right. The sound of music from a radio station played softly. Elvis would never turn off the music in his bedroom. He sighed. "Arlene, there is something I have to get straight with you." "When we were all out on the patio tonight, every time I'd say any kind of rough word at all, I'd look up and you'd have this shocked look on your face. "Honey, what you've got to realize is that I'm a human being just like everybody else. I want you to treat me like you would anyone else. "And the way you looked at my cigar. Now, I don't drink but I do smoke a cigar once in a while. I even say a cuss word at times but they're mostly said in fun. I don't say them at anybody. "I'm human. I want you to realize that." He reached me out and took my hands. "Love me," he said, "but don't worship me. I'm not a god." After a minute, he said, "If I didn't care about you in a special way I would not waste my time talking to you like this. But I care. I like you. I want you to be one of my gang." (...) "And if you have any kind of problem, feel free to come to me with it. Don't listen to the guys if they say not to bother me with something. Just come and talk to me." "If you just feel like coming up here and sitting alone for a while, come ahead. No room in my house is off limits to anybody in my gang. That's the way I want you to think about it now."
Elvis: This One's for You" by Arlene Cogan. Chapter 2 - "Goodnight, Honey."

“At first, I was afraid, to open my eyes and look to see who it was. When I got my eyes open, Elvis was standing there looking at me. He stood in the doorway only a moment. Then he backed out and quietly shut the door. I told Vernon about it the next day while Elvis was at the base. ‘Elvis does that sometimes,’ Vernon said, ‘He’ll go around checking to make sure everybody is all right. He’ll wake up in the night and start to worry about everybody’”
this made me melt, he was the sweetest 😭

I just finished reading Arlene Cogan's book, Elvis: This One's For You, and I'm a mess!
First off, thank you so much @doll-elvis for taking the time to scan Arlene's book and sharing the digital file with all of us!
I thought Arlene wrote about her friendship with Elvis so beautifully and filled with nothing but respect and love for him. The one thing that really stood out to me was how in-tune he was with everyone around him. I do believe God blessed him with special gifts that He didn't give to anyone else, and Elvis was always searching for the reasons why God gave those gifts to him.
I could go on and on about what Arlene wrote, but I don't want to give the whole book away! I highly recommend reading her book! 💗

Okay, I’ve finally had the time to gather all my Elvis books I’ve read/currently reading. As promised for @kiankiwi (the ones I’ve read online were Elvis What Happened, Elvis and the Memphis Mafia, Arlene Cogan’s book, and I’ll be reading Kathy’s soon.)

Something that really angers me is all these (mostly young) TikTokers or those on Twitter (or on here) trying to claim Elvis was a "p*do" or a "groomer" or whatever else because of his relationship to Cilla and some other girls in his life like Dixie Locke (especially since that godawful Coppola movie came out). These are the facts:
While it IS true that he did "date" some teenage girls--Dixie Locke, Sandy Martindale, Arlene Cogan, Frances Forbes, and Reeca Smith to name a few, ALL of them have insisted to this day that nothing sexual happened between him and them at that age; the most they ever did was kiss. They have all maintained he was a perfect gentleman towards them, and was extremely respectful; he never made them feel uncomfortable in any way. Even Priscilla has maintained to this day that there was no sexual activity between her and him until after they married, and there was not even any heavy petting until after she moved to Graceland permanently when she was 18, and thus an adult. (He may have also slept with Wanda Jackson when she was 17 and he was 19 or 20, but even if this did happen, she was a few months away from turning 18, and whatever happened was clearly consensual, so there you go.)
Elvis grew up during the 40s-70s. Simply put, times were different then, and you were expected to grow up fast (especially in the South); it was common for older men to date teen girls and for girls to marry young. Several even dropped out of high school to get married; I knew kids whose grandparents married at 15, 16 or 17. You cannot apply 2024 morals and standards to someone who lived more than 50 years ago. It just doesn't work.
If anything, these teen girls were the outliers; all the serious girlfriends Elvis had (with the exception of Cilla) were in their twenties or older, such as Linda Thompson, Ginger Alden, Anita Wood, and Joyce Bova.
Anyway, sorry for the rant; I just needed to get this off my chest and hopefully set the record straight. It just annoys me when this misinformation and several half-truths keep getting spread around. Let's hope this gets spread around instead. Maybe it'll finally help stop the haters in their tracks.
I'm glad that you're getting it off your chest :)
It's just that a lot of people don't take the time to do research and get the information(the right information) they're just bored, they have nothing better to do.

“it’s a real horse tail,” he said. He lifted it up high and looked at the back of my neck. “Yeah it’s a real horse tail, all right.”
I blushed the color of a ripe tomato. Elvis saw me blush and he laughed with childish delight. “Look at Arlene blush,” he said. Bobby made some comment about it in one of his funny voices and Elvis laughed even harder.
He lifted up my pony tail again. “Please, Elvis,” i said, trying to smile but afraid i was going to start crying. I knew he could be embarrassed easily. So i decided to get even with him.
When he got up to go in to the pool room with Bobby, I called out, “Oh, Elvis.” He turned around and looked at me. “Yeah?” I smiled. “I really like those tight black pants. There’s something in the way you fill them out in the rear. Especially when you walk away from us. You’ve got the cutest butt i ever saw.”
He frowned and blushed deep. “Arlene, cut that out,” he said. “Let us see it again, Elvis,” I said. He said “that’s enough, Arlene.” He looked really uncomfortable. And his blush was even deeper. He turned and walked out of the room as straight as you please.

Hello Anon!
You don't have to apologize, Anon, I understand! Sometimes people will insist on things, even when they don't have all the facts, because why do the research when they can just hear things second/third hand/from rumors?
It's funny to me when people mention Dixie especially, because they were both teens when they started dating, so like....what?
Holding him to today's standards is simply silly--of course times change, what was acceptable 60+ years ago isn't necessarily now. It's sad and unfortunate, but it doesn't surprise me at all. These things have existed for years, things have been said, and yet his fans continue to grow and people continue to love him and discover his music, and that's what really matters 💖

It could never happen here, could it?
Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg’s announcement that he would consider having Phish play at his inauguration has raised speculation over what bands UK politicians would pick to perform at their own election victory balls.
Sources close to Whitehall (the pot-man at The Lord Moon Of The Mall, actually) have given Plunger an exclusive peek at Civil Service provisions drawn up for just such an occasion:
Theresa May - despite her attachment to ABBA, the first choice of band for the current PM is Rage Against The Machine (probably due to the inspiration she has drawn from the closing lyrics to Killing In The Name) with a place on the subs bench for the Rolling Stones, thanks to their incredible stamina and persistence, returning time after time with the same old material as before.
Jeremy Corbyn - Simply Red: with hits like Holding Back The Years, If You Don’t Know Me By Now and Sad Old Red, who else could it be. No substitutes allowed.
Vince Cable - the LibDem leader has expressed a preference for Alma Cogan, or at a pinch Edmundo Ros & His Orchestra… provided they keep it down a bit and don’t go on after 22.30.
Caroline Lucas - sources say the firm stipulation is for no band at all, since tour buses and all other forms of motor transport will be illegal following a Green victory. However if you bring your own comb, ethically-sourced organically-grown fully-edible rice paper will be provided for a mass participation rendition of What A Wonderful World.
Nicola Sturgeon - in legal statutes laid down shortly after the Act of Union in 1701, Jimmy Shand And His Band and The Proclaimers are booked in perpetuity to perform at any SNP celebration.
Heidi Allen / Chuka Umunna - for reasons that are yet to become clear, The Independent Group/ChangeUK (or whatever they’re called this week) have selected The Power Station: the ad hoc short-lived supergroup comprising washed-up stars from a glossier, shallower, more frivolous era.
Plunger understand that there are still ongoing legal wrangles over whether Arlene Foster’s DUP or Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party will have first dibs on their preferred choice of Orange Goblin.

Con·science (noun) An inner feeling or voice viewed as acting as a guide to the rightness or wrongness of one's behavior.
Sam and Dean have heard the voices in their heads and at first, they thought they were crazy. But a conscience is not just an inner feeling. It is also a human hybrid. They are powerful and they are designed to help humans when in danger. Join Sam and Dean when they meet their consciences and how they navigate through Azazel's plans to the Angel's and trying to start up The Apocalypse. It's going to be one hell of a ride. Especially when the Conscience Society does not like the Winchester's at all. So things will be quite interesting.

The story behind the pictures
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“‘Hi honey,” Elvis said. He came to meet me and the first thing he did was hug and kiss me. Affection was something he loved to show. He seemed to want to give it — and to crave it right back from you. In large amounts and often. He loved to touch and be touched. ‘Let’s don’t forget this,’ he said, slipping the camera off my arm. ‘Let’s get some shots while the sun is still up’. He slid down into one of the lawn chairs on the grass and opened his collar a little and smiled at me. It could have been a movie poster. He seemed to have a way of looking great, no matter how he stood or sat. He was so beautiful I could hardly operate my camera…I ended up with a roll of twelve pictures all shot from the exact same spot”

Sometimes I feel a little uneasy seeing the name Frances Forbes or Arlene Cogan; they were two of the girls who attended the "sleepovers" with Elvis when they were 14 (which means in the book excerpt you reblogged they'd be between 16-18). Granted, the girls all insisted to this day nothing sexual happened with E at the time of the sleepovers, so it's hard to know what to think sometimes. Anyway, sorry for the rambling.
I can understand why you would feel a little uneasy about it. I feel like it’s a bit conflicting because on one hand.. Today that would not fly, but on the other hand these girls knew what they were doing. But I think of it like this unless these women came out and said he was inappropriate (the same with Cilla), then it would be cause for alarm. But they all insist everything was innocent and he didn’t do anything inappropriate. But that’s just my opinion.
It’s honestly such a conflicting topic and I’m not trying to defend his actions, but also.. I don’t know how to feel. If I was 14 and around Elvis I’d be all over him, lol.
Don’t be sorry! ☺️
